so things are delay. but other than that, he's smooth sailing. all right. james, back to you. thanks. a lot rain, a 601. and today the man convicted of attacking paul pelosi in his home in san francisco. >> is going to be sentenced. david de pap is his name facing upwards of 50 years in prison. crawford's will trend live at the federal courthouse in san francisco with the latest. will. >> james, it will happen right behind mesin 4 hours from now. he was actually convicted last year. but today he will find out his fate. let's get right to the video on how we got here. it actually started back on october 28th of 2022. when david de pap went to the pelosi is home in san francisco. he was looking for then speaker of the house, nancy pelosi saying that he wanted to talk to her and if she lied, he would have broken her kneecaps. but instead, paul pelosi was the only one home. he ended up calling the police department when

officers arrived. body cam footage shows that david de pap actually hit paul pelosi 3 times on the head with a hammer. he suffered a fractured skull, actually woke up in a pool of his own blood. the pap was a rested. now, prosecutors say during this whole trial, but he never showed remorse that he was actually bragging about the attack. he was convicted of assaulting an immediate family member of a federal official as well as attempted kidnapping of a federal official. he faces up, as you mention to 50 years in prison. prosecutors are looking for 40 years, which means by the time he gets out of prison, he will be 83 years old. this is just one front of his problems because state prosecutors also want to get him on charges. and that's the trial after this. and after that ice also wants him as well because he is actually canadian resident who came into the u.s. back in

2008 on a six-month visa. he should have left the united states, but instead, obviously he has been here ever since to the point where he attacked paul pelosi. we will be in court and will let you know during the 10 o'clock newscast. how much time he will spend behind bars. back to you. all right. we'll check back with you throughout the morning. thank you. 603, on the clock. let's go to the east bay now where a multi-vehicle crash killed at least one person this morning is all according to the >> chp to say this crash happened on 5.80, eastbound right near grand avenue. the off-ramp there at about 12, 20 this morning. one of the cars overturned right near the center divider. police have not released any details now about the person who died but all lanes of the highway eastbound exit to grand avenue were closed due to that crash. >> time now 604 and the chp and hayward is looking for the driver who struck and killed a man wednesday night. it was near 80 on lewelling boulevard west of embers way. the driver

took off and police have been looking ever since. we do not have a description of the vehicle yet. turning to another big story this morning, pro-palestinian protesters may now be facing a number of new charges. had demonstrators were arrested last night after authorities broke or broke it up because they went into a vacant building. >> at uc berkeley and these protesters occupied a kron four's. dan thorn has the story. pro-palestinian protesters facing off with a large number of police outside of the and ahead building near uc berkeley. >> officers had just cleared out another group of protesters who are occupying the abandoned space thursday night. at least a dozen of those people were taken away in handcuffs. they're now possibly facing charges of vandalism, trespassing and destruction of property. just a day earlier, police had called the takeover of the vacant building a crime scene. beyond the police barriers,

people chanted to free palestine, a recent graduate of uc berkeley says he's all for the protests but was not fully on board with this occupation. i mixed opinions about this, but i'm proposing, you know, i think they're doing a good, good work here, michael. the investments mission they have going at one point, protesters did get close with officers trying to move the perimeter back, but it did not escalate from there. that was dan thorn reporting several blocks from sproul hall on the cal campus is where these protesters >> have set up encampments that they did 3 weeks ago and those were cleared out. uc berkeley now says the 2 groups are not associated. so they're dealing with this second group. now. >> in the north bay at sonoma state, students and faculty are sorting things out now after the university's president went rogue and made a deal with protesters without checking with his higher-ups first, he's been placed on administrative leave. the chancellor of the csu system says president mike lee's

agreement was made without the appropriate approvals. the agreement included an academic boycott on israeli universities. some students in sonoma think the chancellor's reaction isn't fair. >> i support the president and on the green months against genocide. kind of crazy. how a statement about lake ending genocide is like. crazy, crazy thing that has put someone on leave. >> well, student activist groups said the agreement played out in a three-page letter was a win for them. but it's clearly controversial and it is seen by some as anti-semitic. >> the nature of the program being in southwest asia, north african studies was made without consulting with subject matter. experts in the middle east of whom i consider myself. one of them is done a really good job up until now as president. i think that he did not handle this this situation. well, but i personally would hope you'd be given another chance. >> it's unclear how long president lee will be on leave. graduation is scheduled for tomorrow.

>> it's 607. and the university of california is responding to workers who just vote voted to authorize a strike. the union for the workers approved the strike. they say they believe the university's mishandled the demonstrations that have been happening on the campuses. specifically this one at ucla where protesters attacked a pro-palestinian encampment for several hours without police intervention. melissa mattel, the associate vice president of systemwide labor relations for the university of california said that strike was illegal. uaw is here. she says uaw decision to strike over non labor issues violates the no strike clause of their contracts with you see and sets a dangerous and far-reaching precedent that social political and cultural issues no matter how valid that are not labor related can support a labor strike and quote. it's 608, and oakland's

mayor is talking with kron for news about how her city is continue to make progress on fighting crime. yeah. she also gave us an update on the struggle of dealing with homelessness. kron four's. catherine heenan has the story. >> more people are constructing housing. the mayor talked about the fact that in the latest count, homelessness grew by 9% in oakland. those numbers released just this week, but at least the rate is slowing down. 9% does not sound as drastic. when you consider the city's homeless population grew. 47% from 2017 to 2019. and 24% between 2019 and and so this 9% increase is actually a significant success shows that we are, you know, closing some of these >> homelessness issues. of course, there's still so much to be done. i we can walk out the street still see encampments. and so that's our job is never done until

everyone is brought inside in our streets. a and clear of encampments. >> she says oakland is working on making modular housing permanent and that federal housing help is coming in forms that are easier to when i advocate at the federal level for a voucher ys, we're advocating for playspace voucher so that it's easier for people to redo bc the section 8 vouchers that they don't have to go and find it. >> a land where that would take it that it's attached to housing units. as for the improved crime numbers recently released one number not being celebrated is the fact that residential robbery is up 110%. >> that translates to 42 home robberies so far this year compared to 20 in the same period last year. >> you know, i know that it's like it's it sounds scary. when you say 110% increase. but mind you, you know, you come from already a very small amount of numbers for you today. and and, you know, and the you know, tick in certain

senate members as well. its in downtown sacramento, according to kron four's eytan wallace, who was among those evacuated the chp asked everybody inside that 10 story building to leave just before 5 o'clock yesterday because of a suspicious package that was found, the threat claim that package included anthrax and hour later after the evacuation. a spokesperson for governor newsome said, quote, a specialist team swiftly tested the substance and confirm that it was not anthrax and it was not dangerous. whatever it was. governor newsom was not in the building at the time. he is on an official trip out of the country right now to italy. in fact, yesterday we told you about his meeting with the pope at the vatican investigation now underway to determine who sent that package. >> time now 6.18, and saint andrew missionary baptist church is asking for the community's help. it's a designated landmark in oakland and it's been helping the community ever since 19. 0, 6, in the earthquake that happened. then the church is in west oakland and they are asking for donations because a fire you can see here damaged

if you hired these 3 men for roofing work over the last year, you've likely been scammed. >> that's what san mateo police are saying. they're looking for possible victims of this trio. they say the group posed as contract workers and overcharge elderly residents for unfinished and likely and necessary work. police say the suspect used at least 2 different names for their company statewide roofing and siding and then roofing and masonry. the first reported scam happened in november of last year in the most recent one happened in may of this year. all 3 men now been booked into the san mateo county jail. pickleball

and a north bay community is shaken after police found a woman's body while they were doing a welfare check at a home in rio vista. investigators believe the woman's son. >> is the person behind her death. we have really shots with the story. >> there was tension between the mom and the son. he was living here for 2 months. he was emotionally. >> stable, worried neighbors on birch ridge drive in the trilogy. retirement community called rio vista. police said senior in a while after their 78 year-old neighbor haven't been seen for several days. there was a conflict. something was boiling there and when you know a boiled over cops got the call requesting to check on the elderly woman yesterday evening. they were met at the door by the woman's 57 year-old son when additional officers arrived. he tried to stop them from.

the scene. no word on the condition of the other victims just yet. but police are now looking for suspects. we'll keep you updated meanwhile, a man who was hit and killed by suspected drunk driver in fremont earlier this month has been identified. it's been identified as 26 year-old tony la of oakland. he was hit and killed on may 3rd on fremont boulevard. the driver who hit him was from sunnyvale. they crashed into a traffic pole and was arrested for suspected dui. now the victim's family has put together a gofundme page to cover funeral costs. he leaves behind his pregnant wife and 3 children. this is the first traffic fatality in fremont this year. >> time now is 6.34 and now we know the identity of the man who was killed riding an e-bike in hayward. 22 year-old say rahm, a gala poly was riding an e-bike on may 8th near mission boulevard when he was struck by a vehicle and taken to the hospital. he

ended up passing away 2 days after that, he was a graduate student from india pursuing his master's degree in computer science at cal state east bay. and this is the 4th fatal collision in hayward this year. >> former workers of oakland hotel are going to rally today demanding wage compensation from their former employer. >> last october, radisson hotel committed. they say wage theft against 120 workers and they withheld 400 $1000. this is according to the oakland, department of workplace and employment standards. they ordered the hotel to compensate the employees, but the employees say they haven't seen a dime. the rally is going to be at the radisson hotel oakland airport on avenue. and 1 o'clock this afternoon. >> at least one san francisco city supervisor now pushing back against plans to bring giant pandas to the city this

week supervisors discussed paying for the care and transportation of the animals, marilyn debris previously asked the group to pass a resolution that would allow various city departments to raise money from private entities, but supervisor and candidate for mayor joseph. it argues that that money would go would be better spent going towards other programs like those that would help youth in the unhoused. so this is about prioritizing our future. this is about prioritizing our children. >> over pandas. and if we can rally to fund a home for pandas, we certainly can rally to raise money for essential programs that impact every single corner of the city. and fundraising efforts would not begin until at least mid-june. if not later, there's still no timeline on when those pandas would arrive. >> in san francisco from china. >> time now is 6.37, and state lawmakers are now deciding which pieces of legislation are going to move on and which are going to die. yeah. so capitol correspondent eytan
