>> news station, this is. news 11. >> good evening, everybody. thanks for being with us tonight on kron 4 news at 11, i'm grant lotus and i'm noelle bellow. our top story tonight, pro-palestinian protesters may now be facing a number of charges. demonstrators were arrested tonight after authorities say they broke into this vacant building in berkeley. uc berkeley owns that building and kron four's. dan thorn has the story. pro-palestinian protesters facing off with a large number of police outside of the and ahead building near uc berkeley. >> officers had just cleared out another group of protesters who are occupying the abandoned space thursday night. at least a dozen of those people were taken away in handcuffs. they're now possibly facing charges of vandalism, trespassing and destruction of property. just a day earlier, police had called the takeover of the vacant building a crime scene.

beyond the police barriers, people chanted to free palestine, a recent graduate of uc berkeley says he's all for the protests but was not fully on board with this occupation. i mixed opinions about this, but i'm proposing, you know, i think they're doing a good, good work here, michael. the investments mission they have going at one point, protesters did get close with officers trying to move the perimeter back, but it did not escalate from there. well, those police barricades are now down. the officers are beginning to move out of this area after clearing out the abandoned home. the. >> hall complex here near uc just a few blocks away here from sproul hall. but there was an encampment that was set up about 3 weeks ago that it's since been broken down because there was an agreement between those protesters and the school's administration. the

school says that the people that were occupying this space are not associated with that group. but campus police and also the officers that came out here said that the occupation that was happening here was a crime scene and then it was going to come to an end in berkeley. dan thorn kron, 4 good update. thank you, dan. that'll wild situation at sonoma state university where students and faculty are sorting things out. >> after the university's president kind of went rogue and made a deal with protesters this week without checking with his bosses. first, he's now been placed on administrative leave. the chancellor of the csu system says president mike lee's agreement with the protesters was made without the appropriate approvals. the agreement included an academic boycott on israeli universities. some students at sonoma. think that the chancellor's reaction was unfair. >> i support the president and on the agreements against genocide. kind of crazy. how a statement about lake ending

genocide is like. crazy, crazy thing that has put someone on leave. >> student activists groups said the agreement laid out in a 3 page letter was a win for them. but the whole thing is clearly controversial and is seen as anti-semitic by some. >> the nature of the program being in southwest asia, north african studies was made without consulting with subject matter. experts in the middle east of whom i consider myself. one of them is a really good job up until now as president. i think he did not handle this this situation. well, but i personally would hope you'd be given another chance. >> it is unclear how long president leave will be leave graduation. there is scheduled for saturday. >> about 48,000 academic workers in the uc system now have approval to go on strike in a vote last night. the union representing those workers say they believe the university's mishandled demonstrations at uc campuses.

specifically the ones at ucla where counter protesters attacked a pro-palestinian encampment for several hours without any police intervention. the vote does not guarantee a strike. 8 of the uc campuses still have another month of instruction before summer break. melissa mattel, the associate vice president of systemwide labor relations for university of california called the idea of a strike illegal saying uaw is decision to strike over non labor issues violates the no strike clause their contracts with uc and sets a dangerous and far-reaching precedent that social political and cultural issues no matter how valid that are, not labor related can support a labor strike. >> whether time here as we get a live look at sfo on this thursday night and you can kind of see it right above the tower there where it starts to get a whitish gray. that is the fog which has been with us this week. yeah, chilly and windy, lawrence. yeah, it's

going to really roll far inland. i think overnight tonight we're going to see more fog around the bay area to start out the day. >> on our friday, maybe was more drizzle to we could even see some drizzle inside the bay out there tonight. yeah, the clouds are rolling on shore already push inside the bay bouncing up against the east bay hills. more on the way overnight tonight. temperatures sierra, you can see the effects now as that cool air is working its way all the way inland, even in the interior valleys, good place like livermore and conquered similar temperatures now. and that's because that ocean air is finally made its way well on shore. so we're going to see more of that. of course, we have plenty of clouds all along the california coastline, the bay area, no exception and more on the way. high pressure. well, it's going kind of weaken a little bit. there's a cold front that's going to drop over the top of that ridge and we're likely to see the temperatures begin to cool down just a little bit as we head in toward the weekend. not anything that's going to be cold by any means except along the coastline that patchy fog. can you cooler out toward the beaches but said 80's? start to see a lot of 70's popping up around the bay area tomorrow about 59 and cool in san francisco, fog and

sun sunny and breezy in oakland, 72 75 in san jose. thanks. alerts the chp and hayward is looking for the driver who hit and killed a man officers found a man's body last night. >> near 80 on the welling boulevard west of embers way anyone with info here is being asked to call police. >> new at 11 if you have hired these 3 men for roofing work over the last year, you've likely been scammed. san mateo police are looking for possible victims of this trio. they say the group posed as contract workers and overcharged elderly residents for unfinished and likely unnecessary work. the suspects used at least 2 different names for their company, statewide roofing and siding and roofing and masonry. the first reported scam happened in november of last year. the most recent case happened on may 8th. all 3 men have been booked into san mateo county jail. >> the man convicted of attacking paul pelosi will be sentenced tomorrow in san

francisco. he could face up to 40 years in prison david de pap was convicted last year for the attempted kidnapping and the assault of a federal officer that was in october of 2022. during the trial, the pap admitted he broke into the pelosi home and intended to hold nancy pelosi hostage. >> and all clear was given tonight after a government building in sacramento was evacuated due to a threat. the swing space building is home to the offices of the governor, state assembly and senate in downtown sacramento. according to our eytan wallace, who was among those evacuated out of that building, the california highway patrol asked everyone inside the 10 story building to leave just before 5 o'clock due to a suspicious package. the threat claimed the package included anthrax and hour after the evacuation. a spokesperson for governor newsome said a specialist team swiftly tested the substance confirmed it was not anthrax or dangerous. governor newsom

was not in the building at the time. he is on an official trip out of the country and italy and investigation is underway now to determine who sent that package. the governor is taking part in a climate summit with world leaders and the pope early this morning. >> governor newsom addressed the delegation of about 100 people at the vatican, including the mayor of paris and the governor of new york. during his remarks, he called the climate crisis a clear and present danger pointing to severe droughts, intense storms and historic wildfires that have become all too common in california. he also did not hold back in calling out the fossil fuel industry. >> we have the tools. we have the technology. we have the capacity to address this issue at a global level of skill level and they've been fighting every single advancement. >> oil companies have long pushed back against newsom's allegations arguing his administration has unfairly targeted that. >> a new warning tonight from

police in los altos. they say thieves are breaking into empty homes and an advisory posted on facebook. los altos police as empty homes under construction or listed for sale have become the target of burglars recently. the thieves are stealing staged items like furniture and appliances. police are urging people to report any suspicious activity in their neighborhood. and of course, keep your doors and locked the windows locked when you're not home. >> walgreens says its generic brand of narcan will be available over the counter by the end of the month. the product will be in the pain relief aisle. it is a lifesaving medicine used to reverse opioid overdoses. the walgreens generic brand will be about 35 bucks, which is $10 cheaper than the name brand narcan. >> folks across the bay area ditch their cars for a more eco-friendly commute today. it was bike to wherever day. and we caught some residents from the south bay to the east bay participating in san jose.

energizer stations were set up across the city to give riders supplies and some swag as they biked through vta had a station along the guadalupe river trail and river oaks bridge in berkeley. 16 stations across the city handed out free food and some biking swag city officials there said it was a great day to show off the new bike lanes recently placed around the city. today marked the 30th annual bike to wherever day, i believe grant said he participated bike to school like kids to school. all right. a big bay area tradition is happening this weekend. >> not on 2 wheels, but on 2 feet. runners will be taking their mark ready set go bay to breakers says on sunday people are invited to run, jog, dance. you name it to get to the finish line. many will be wearing interesting outfits, including runner pete shaw. he's been doing this thing since 1975 and says he has no plans of slowing down for his 50th race this year.

>> a big milestone for the city of oakland. so glenn unified has become the first school district in the country to have 100% electric fleet of buses. yesterday was the first day the buses were officially put into use manufactures, say

all 74 buses will also be providing energy to the city when not in use. >> we talk a lot about equity in oakland. equities is the center of what we do in the school district. the families of oakland are disproportionately disadvantaged in affected by high rates of asthma and exposure to air pollution from diesel fuels. so by electrifying and having this vision. we're not worrying about students being sick. we're not worrying about emissions. >> so is the company that made the buses and leaders there say plans to tackle the san francisco and los angeles school districts are coming up next. >> general motors robo taxi company. cruz has paid a settlement to a san francisco woman who was dragged by one of their self-driving cars last october. the woman was dragged 20 feet by the cruise car after being hit by another vehicle. fortune magazine reports the settlement was between 8 12 million dollars.

the woman had life threatening injuries after the crash. general motors replaced almost the entire management team at cruz and the dmv later suspended. the driverless taxi permits to operate in san francisco. has more. electric vehicles reached the roads, gas tax revenue, which funds road repairs. >> is declining. so california is going to test a road charge program to help fill that void. the state is recruiting about 800 drivers to participate in the 6 month study that starts next year. drivers will be required to pay road charges each month based on the number of miles driven for their participation. california will pay each person about 400 bucks in gift cards. also get a gas tax refund at the end of the pilot program. you can sign up if you're into this at sea. a road charge dot com. >> at least one city supervisor is pushing back on the plans to bring giant pandas to san francisco this

week. supervisors discussed paying for the care and transportation for the animals. mayor london breed has previously asked the group to pass a resolution to allow various city departments to raise money from private entities, supervisor and candidate for shuts off. it argues money going towards animals is less useful than funding programs for the youth and the unhoused. >> so this is about prioritizing our future. this is about prioritizing our children over pandas. and if we can rally to fund a home for pandas, we certainly can rally to raise money for essential programs that impact every single corner of this city. >> panda fundraising efforts wouldn't begin until least mid-june. if not later, there is still no timeline on when the pandas would arrive in san francisco from china. >> our weather time here as we get a live look there at the bay bridge toll plaza with an eye towards friday the weekend, not too many cars. there.

>> on the bay bridge are approaching the bay bridge. lawrence. people are probably underneath blankets and they've got their heaters on in some parts. yeah. all covered up the i mean, you can get cold that fog outside. we'll see plenty of that on the way overnight. tonight. >> fact, starting out very gray around the bay area. tomorrow's river really see a strong onshore flow. that means plenty of clouds going to fill all the way. the interior valleys overnight and beyond maybe all the way in the central valley. they're now you can see a dry conditions. but boy, likely see some drizzle along the coastline. you see the model's overnight tonight as low clouds and fog search well onshore in the central valley by tomorrow morning. that right out the east bay, you name it is going to be a cloudy start your day as you head out. maybe a little slick along the coastline and just inside the bay by noon. yes, still a little fog lingering inside the bay. but as we head toward the afternoon, the breaks up a little bit before surging back on shore by tomorrow evening. so it's going to do its work on the temperatures tomorrow. 50's some low 60's in the san francisco on the coastline. lots of clouds lingering all day long there inside the bay

will be a little bit warmer as the clouds break up a bit. 64 millbrae but breezy 67 in foster city about 69 redwood city, south bay. you see a lot of sunshine tomorrow. some really comfortable temperatures tomorrow afternoon. a lot of 70's out there late in the day. 79 in lemore 78 in pleasant. 71 in union city. 73 in oregon. about 75 degrees in concord. where these numbers looking good tomorrow afternoon. very comfortable right around the average for this time of year. but out toward the beaches is noel was talking about where that cool fog is setting in. that means those temperatures. yeah. you want a jacket out there toward the beaches next couple days. those numbers coming down for the weekend but should be a nice weekend starting out some night morning. low clouds and fog giving way to sunshine. a little breezy over the weekend to them. we warm up on monday and tuesday, classic bay area summer. it's settling in early this year rained for a long time. know. and then there wasn't really much of a spring know. >> had like got maker hot weather. yeah. and that was it. a3d back. judy blume starting early. that's what chicago does. yeah, super
