out of sacramento. government building is being evacuated due to a threat. the building houses the offices of the governor and other state lawmakers. >> good evening. thanks for joining us for kron for news at 6. i'm ken wayne and i'm vicki liviakis. that building is known as the swings space. it's in downtown sacramento. >> according to a memo sent out by the secretary of says the senate, a suspicious package was delivered to the 9th floor of that building. the package contained a threat that it contained anthrax. well, authorities have not yet confirmed the information, but they are asking all state and senators to leave the building. we're talking about state workers and then the senators to leave that building as quickly as possible. we're now efforting to hear from bay area senators who were in sacramento tonight. governor newsom is currently in italy. and new at 6 a failure of leadership. put those harsh words tonight address to uc berkeley is a group of pro-palestinian protesters continue to take

over an abandoned building that's owned by the school, the jewish community relations council of the bay area. a national claims to be the largest collective voice of the jewish community posted a statement today. it reads in part >> this situation echoes the lawlessness we witnessed at columbia university and further threatens jewish students and faculty at uc berkeley. we call on the uc board of regents to take swift action amid this leadership vacuum to restore order to campus and safety for jewish campus. life latest protest began yesterday afternoon. the school says the group violently broke into the and ahead complex and started spraying graffiti and setting up a camp inside the new group set up just blocks away from sproul hall where protesters there camped out for several weeks. university has since struck an agreement with those protesters promising a series of steps to examine the school's investments. but as for the new protest, school leaders say they're treating it as an active crime scene. berkeley assistant vice chancellor dan mogulof says in

part, quote, this is not nonviolent civil disobedience. the suspects are trespassing and vandalizing and unsafe boarded-up fire-damaged building next to people's park. we have confirmed that the coalition with whom we reached an understanding with yesterday did not initiate today's action, end quote. meantime, in the north bay fallout over a deal made between the university president and pro-palestinian protesters. sonoma state university's president mike lee. he's been placed on administrative leave after the chancellor of the california state university system said that the agreement. >> he made was made without appropriate approvals. kron four's rob nesbitt has reaction tonight from students and faculty. >> this is person field behind me at sonoma state university where students had set up their tent encampment. as you can see, no tense there now because of an agreement that president lee made with demonstrators in agreement that led to the president being placed on administrative

leave. a dozen tents once occupied the campus of sonoma state university. all in protest of the ongoing war in gaza. now there are none after university president mike lee reach an agreement with demonstrators that included divesting from israel students. i spoke with thursday. we're frustrated to find out that the agreement led to president lee being placed on administrative leave. >> i support the president and i 3 months because against genocide, kind of crazy. how a statement about lake ending genocide is like. crazy, crazy thing that has put someone on leave or >> the agreement laid out. a three-page letter was the clear to win by student activists groups. but it also drew backlash. what agreement was estbblishing a palestinian curriculum. but professor of anthropology, alexis bhutan says there wasn't enough input. >> the nature of the program being in southwest asia, north african studies was made without consulting with subject matter. experts in the middle east of whom i consider myself, one of them. president lee's agreement also came with backlash from outside groups

including the bay area, jewish community relations council ceo tyler gregory says the agreement was a civil rights violation. >> it's actually endorse an academic boycott of israel. that means that israeli students, professors, with vast knowledge not around jewish studies alone, but from all the science is israel's a start-up nation after being placed on administrative leave? president lee put out a statement saying that in his attempt to find agreement with one group of students in marginalized, others taking full ownership of any hard because he's done a really good job up until now as president. i think that he did not handle this. >> this situation well, but i personally would hope you'd be given another chance. no word from the university on how long president lee will be placed on leave. graduation is says that she hopes the commencement ceremony goes smoothly without any protests. >> reporting at sonoma state, i'm rob nesbitt. kron. 4 news.

>> in southern california in orange county, police cleared a pro-palestine encampment on uc irvine's campus after protests escalated yesterday. university says several 100 protesters arrived on the campus and surrounded the physical sciences lecture hall. the encampment was cleared out by late last night. today classes were held online. meantime, a union representing about 48,000 academic workers in the uc system voted to give the union's executive board the ability to strike at any time. union members say they believe that university of california mishandled a pro-palestinian demonstrations at uc campuses. specifically at ucla where counter protesters attacked a pro-palestinian encampment for several hours without police intervention. the vote does not guarantee a strike 8 uc campuses still have a month of instruction before the summer break. >> stay with kron. 4 on air and online for all the latest

to bring 2 giant pandas from china san francisco zoo is still on track. but government bureaucracy. it's slowing things down a bit. step one is allowing the mayor and a number of city departments to start raising funds for the panda project. but as kron four's dan kerman tells us tonight, that resolution failed to make it out of the supervisors subcommittee. it's by the summer of 2025. that san francisco hopes to take delivery of 2 giant pandas from china. >> to help make that happen on thursday, the mayor's office says the government audit and oversight committee to authorize a waiver allowing the mayor as well as 5 city departments to start raising 25 million dollars in donations. we want to make sure that not a single dollar. general fun going to this proposal. >> and that's why we've come to you to ensure that only philanthropy will go to support. the panda exhibit at all. the costs associated with it. there's a lot at this.

>> but was san francisco's department of children, youth and their families facing a 25 million dollar budget cut supervisor and mayoral candidate cautious. a funny question whether this should be at the top of the mayor's to do list. this is about prioritizing our future. this is about prioritizing our children over pandas. and if we can rally to fund a home for pandas, we certainly can rally to raise money for essential programs that impact every single corner of this city. the mayor's office said they would support waivers for both endeavors. committee members supervisor catherine stefani agreed insisting putting one project against another is not productive. >> i don't think it's impossible to seek private philanthropic dollars for pandas as well as programs supported by dc wyeth and our children. and i just think that if we're going to get into these mutually exclusive wars about we can't we can only do this and not do this. i just don't believe that we should limit ourselves like

that. stephanie, in the mayor's office favorite moving the resolution on to the full board of supervisors. >> for a vote at its june 4th meeting. we need to start raising money right away. i don't think it's ready to be forwarded to the to the full board. but fellow committee members supervisors, dean preston and connie chan voted instead to bring the resolution back to their committee with changes among other things they want to list of potential donors and interested parties. they want to consider narrowing the number of city departments to can raise funds and they want to explore whether the money raised can also go towards deferred maintenance at the zoo. well, some might see this as an unnecessary bamboo barrier. others see it as a committee doing its due diligence. however, you see it. it means panda fundraising efforts won't begin at least until mid-june, if not later. dan kerman kron, 4 news city of oakland says its tourism numbers are reaching pre-pandemic levels visit. oakland says more than 3 million people visited the town marking a

homeless outreach program last year. the city launched its heart program that stands for homeless engagement. outreach response. >> the program meant to engage with those experiencing homelessness as an alternative to a law enforcement response. the teams are only dispatched to engage with community when there is no indication of crime, violence, threats, mental health or medical need. the says that it helps about 300 people every week in its first year. heart has addressed more than 13,000 calls to service and completed all of those requests, including block sidewalks and small encampment. hart also placed 144 people into an emergency shelter or waitlist and completed 168 applications for calfresh and medical hart workers are trained on the new lock zone. naloxone, rather use de-escalation and even cultural and gender awareness to best serve the community.

but boy, it is a chilly day along the coastline. look at half moon bay. i don't see many people out there enjoying the day along the coastline. as we've got that fog kind of locked in there. you've got that breeze. do. they're calling not bad all the way of one of the centers in the oakland area that is tipped over little bit moderate amounts up showing up there or elsewhere. you got that nice seabreeze and that's clear dollars skies and that looks good for tomorrow into air quality. going to be great all around plan on that sea breeze. and yeah, on the green by tomorrow afternoon with plenty of good air to breathe and that that breeze kicking in already right now, some of those winds gusting over 20 miles per hour out along the coastline. now, even inside the bay, we're seeing some breezy conditions to more of that tonight. has that goal fog is going to be swinging back on shore. you see a couple of fingers fog, one extending in the north bay right now, right rolling right through the golden gate bridge now bouncing up against part of the east bay hills, too. we'll see that filling in overnight tonight. and that means, well, seeing plenty of fog early tomorrow morning by the afternoon. we will sneak in some sunshine and then temperatures going to be mild
