final phase of the multibillion-dollar harvey milk terminal at sfo. >> from the bay station, you're watching kron. and news. >> thank you for joining us here on kron. 4 news at noon. i'm justine waltman. our top story this afternoon as that alameda county district attorney pamela price is speaking out in oakland today in response to the board of supervisors selecting a date for her recall election kron. four's to justice joins us now live from oakland with the details. thanks for joining us. >> right. just seeing da pamela price saying she is ready to fly standing by what she has done in office so far since being elected in 2023. also saying that she is ready to clear up the misinformation. it was just 2 weeks ago that the alameda county board of supervisors certify the signatures required for recall. and yesterday they voted that the recall will be part of the general election in november.

the effort to recall coming from a committee called say telling me to for everyone today, the group supporting the price called protect the win for public safety. holding meeting with price in oakland pricing. he plans on clearing up that misinformation. our supporters will continue to engage our community. we will continue to speak to our family, our friends, our neighbors. we will tell the truth and we will counteract the lies and the misinformation campaign. >> that has been amplified by certain folks in the media and certain people. there's been a whole lot of misinformation. >> and on november, 5th, alameda county voters will have their say if they want price to remain in office or not. reporting live in oakland to be just as kron. 4 news. tiffany, thank you. and in oakland, police are investigating after a.car crash left one person in the hospital just after 4.30, on

monday afternoon. >> officers responding to a car crash on international boulevard near 35th avenue. they say a person physically assaulted the victim and then was vandalizing a car that had someone inside when the person inside the car tried to drive away. the attacker was hit by the car and seriously hurt. the attacker then went to the hospital condition right now, not known. the driver did wait for police to arrive, but anyone with information should contact police. we're getting our first look at the forecast right now with a live look outside at a sunny shot here showing us. but it looks like along the embarcadero looking out towards the bay bridge. it's quite a different story. other spots in the bay area hog today. we have meteorologist kyla grogan. yeah. all those details looks other heavily behind me says, hey, i've got to the view from mount tam where you can see the marine layer is still very present in many spots. if you're along the coast, you've been dealing with the clouds kind of a mix in other places. but the closer you are to the water, the more likely see some of that cloud cover and the temperatures certainly reflect that. 54 degrees out

of half moon bay. big difference when you head to antioch where it is currently. 76 71 in san jose and we've got some nice 60's in the north bay and right around the bay itself. >> wind has been relatively calm. but notice you got a bit of a delta breeze happening in fairfield at 21 miles per hour. >> we're going to get a little bit of a stronger onshore flow today as we get into the afternoon, of course, the evening that will bring that marine layer right back in. but for now getting some of that sunshine as high pressure stays in control. and you can really see how it kind of peeled away in the last few hours from a good portion of our viewing area. with the exception of the coast, you had 2 points out. they are certainly socked in a little bit more. so highs today will be above average, particularly if you are inland a spot like antioch, looking out for 84 degrees in nice 70's up in the north bay. expecting that. 71 in napa. 76 in nevado fremont those 77 degrees. 78 down in san jose and about 60 in san francisco will struggle to get to that 60 degree mark at half. moon bay looking out for about 59 today. but the blue skies, if you haven't seen

them in, you're not at the coast should be on the way shortly. again, you can see you've got a little bit of a breeze out there, too. i'll be back in a bit. we'll talk more about our 7 day forecast. kyla. thank you. in just a few short weeks work on the new harvey milk terminal at san francisco international airport will be all done and that's where we find kron. 4 charles clifford. he got an exclusive look inside the terminal today. he joins us now live with what he saw as the house. a look >> it looks you know, the harvey milk terminal here at sfo been under construction for years. most of its already completed. but there are a few that they're still still working on. and today we got a behind the scenes peak at what will be in sight. inside the new harvey milk terminal at sfo. on wednesday, crews were putting the finishing touches on what has been a project almost 10 years in the making. once the final phase of the work is completed here, travelers will find new shops, restaurants, art displays new ticket counters. >> into new airplane gates for a total of 27 gates, both alaska and delta airlines plan

to move their operations into this terminal later this year. there will also be a brand-new second-floor security checkpoint. that's above the ground floor, security checkpoint. the idea is that travelers walking over the bridge from the parking garage, an airtrain. can go directly through security without needing to go downstairs. the completion of the work will also fully link the harvey milk terminal to the rest of the airport, ollowing people to walk between terminals both before and after they go through security. the entire harvey milk terminal project cost about 2.5 billion dollars. but the airport believes in the long run it will be worth the hefty price tag. >> if we really invest heavily in the features, the amenities, the experience inside the terminal. we get that back in the form of people are spending more money in the terminal there, shopping and dining more. they're spending more time enjoying their stay in the terminal. so, yes, it's a high initial investment. 2.5 billion dollars when people love the time that they're

spending here, we recoup those costs. >> the new harvey milk terminal is set to open to the public with a ribbon cutting ceremony on june. 11th. all right, back live. now, if you've been to sfo lately and you want to try to drive around the departures gate might have knows there's a lot of road construction there. >> that's all going away after june. 11th. but the airport is going to launch a renovation of terminal 3 later this summer. but for now it at sfo, charles clifford kron. 4 news always on to something they can. charles. >> teachers in the south bay rally this morning to demand better wages as their union returns to the bargaining table with the district's kron four's. michael thomas is in los gatos with the story and has reaction. >> behind me are dozens of teachers here in los gatos high school rally for better pay telling me some of them are the lowest paid in the entire county. >> at 7.45, this morning, teachers of los gatos in saratoga. high school rallied

for better pay before heading into the classroom and the bargaining table. patricia sutton is a teacher, the district and a member of the bargaining table telling me these teachers are struggling and deserve better. it's a great place. >> but it's very hard and i hope the parents realized a majority of us. we can't afford to live here. we have to commute to be able to work here. >> and the group says most teachers are working 2 jobs just to make ends meet when it comes to new hires, the schools are being outbid by other districts which is costing the students their education. this veteran teacher tells me all the group is trying to do is. >> i'm trying to make a living so that are younger teachers, especially can live in this area keeping our slice of the pie. lastly, the group is asking for smaller class sizes when it comes to specialty classes saying it's all about student safety and teacher workload, hoping that today will be able to come to some agreement. >> on being paid fairly for all the work we do. we did reach out to the district but have not heard back as of this report, we get more updates on that bargaining meeting will

continue to keep you updated at the very latest los gatos. michael send it back to live durham. >> and the low scott of saratoga union high school district sent us a statement just a short time ago. it reads in part here, the district is currently in the middle of regular contract negotiations with both the district teachers association as well as our classified staff bargaining unit. and we look forward to continuing good faith negotiations that are mutually beneficial and fiscally responsible to our community. on the peninsula. a san mateo county man is now in jail, accused of having with a child younger than 14 years old. redwood city police say they have arrested 19 year-old dandre gomez. they did that yesterday in east palo alto. officers say the incident happened in redwood city. they're now investigating to see if there are any more victims. all right. this video is now going viral on tiktok and it shows charging cables that were cut at a tesla

charging station in valais. how the thieves are believed to have targeted the charging stations to get the copper cables from inside all of the charging stations are now back in service. kron 4, sarah since stinson spoke to the man who posted this video has more. >> all the charging josh peck clear posted this now viral tiktok showing tesla charging cables slashed in stolen from multiple charging stalls on sunday. this happening at a tesla supercharger station in vallejo. >> behind the target on admiral callaghan lane. and i noticed that only at. >> couple other remaining a tesla charging stations had not been cut. >> after looking at one of the cut cables, becker says he knew exactly what happened. the suns have a little copper poor so i catch it spent 17 years investigating these kinds of crime we would find generators in the back of big box retailers stripped of

story we've been following here, bay area universities are pushing back against student protesters the 3 week long encampment. uc berkeley. >> ended on tuesday. and for weeks cabins have been popping up on campuses across the bay with students demanding that their universities cut ties with israel. so this is what's left of the encampment now. it cow stuns camped out there for more than 3 weeks there outside of sprawl hall. but the chancellor sent out a letter on tuesday saying that school leaders had reached an agreement with the demonstrators. the university will create a committee to look at the investment. it's making israel adding they will not be able to fully divest from those investments, but they will look into weapons making and surveillance industries and student protesters at san francisco state also reached an agreement with the administration after more than 2 weeks of demonstrating, the group announced that the school's president and other leaders committed to divesting from weapons makers and also

to create a workforce to develop new screenings for investments. the student protesters scheduled a conference for this afternoon so they could discuss the matter with the public and in the south bay at san jose state school leaders k protesters until 6 o'clock last night to clear out their encampment. but as kron 4 jack molmud report, students say they have no plans to leave. >> what started as daytime sitting senator state's campus is now a 24 7 encampment. >> because i understand that our campus is very silent and complicit with not only genocide, but also as 9 isn't. >> around 70 protesters asking the university to abide by their demands. professor of justice studies saying kill is the advise it for some of the students here. the students in solidarity each other decided to launch a popular university for gaza. and another point of contention is tommy smith, the

1960, at olympia who famously raised his fist and the support of human rights posted an instagram. his support for the protesters said as a state on the other hand, says they for the opposite from smith and the other olympians there, john. carlos, i do think that makes the administration a little bit nervous about this encampment, even existing so close to graduation. meantime, back on campus, the deadline to move out has passed. no police and no forcing out saying kill says she wants to keep advocating for her students. so that's why i risk my own skin in order to protect their right to free speech and academic freedom to speak out against this genocide. now officials with san jose state tell me that many of the students and of violating the student code of conduct what that punishment may look like remains to be seen with the administration telling me we're just so close to graduation. >> reporting in san jose, jackie moment kron 4 news. >> in san francisco, students usf are also given given a deadline on tuesday by school

leaders to leave their encampments or face consequences. and just like at san jose state, they instead held a rally. the school's graduation is on saturday and students say they're prepared to stay at that encampment beyond graduation. if their demands are not met. >> says the suspension or explosion. so you are at risk of being suspended or expelled. and we just think that's a scare tactic. we think that we understand that we have so much power as a collective of what we did >> either encampment has been really unifying for all of us. >> the university has been in talks with protesters and says they have been working to keep an open dialogue. in a statement, the university says there are no plans to clear the encampment or involve law enforcement as law goes as this encampment, it's peaceful and non violence and hundreds of jewish community leaders from across the state, including the bay area are in sacramento today for the annual j pack capital summit. it's the largest advocacy

conference of its kind 500 people from some of the states leading jewish community organizations and a coalition of diverse non jewish groups are taking part in this two-day conference organized by the jewish public affairs committee of california, which is also known as j pack attendees are set to meet with lawmakers from both sides of the aisle to advocate for the greater california jewish community and fight the rise in anti-semitism. >> well, this has been a hard year for the jewish what fills me with hope is that people have decided to turn pain into action. just a packed event today is meaningful because we're under threat to be together in community >> to support each other and to come together, recognize how we can work together. is really important thing as we're seeing rising tide of anti semitism dominate the news cycle. it is so powerful to come up here to sacramento. >> with the largest delegation today 500 people from across

state. >> and speaking a united voice. >> assembly speaker robert reverse, the lieutenant governor eleni kounalakis and superintendent tony thurmond all spoke to the delegation in person. governor gavin newsom provided a virtual pre-recorded remark. i will talk about our weather now with a live look outside here at the golden gate bridge where it is foggy today. we have meteorologist kyla greg with details on. you think that's going to stick around? we should be getting some more sunshine in there unless you're directly at the coast in which case that marine layer is likely to hang on right through the afternoon. but >> you can see here the golden gate bridge. you kind of look in the distance, you see a few little breaks there. however, temperatures reflecting that. we are much cooler in the areas where we have the clouds, right? so san francisco in the 50's oakland at 62, are they getting a little more sunshine? some 70's in san jose livermore concord 60's in santa rosa where they come down to those clouds a little bit there in half moon bay. we're pretty much socked in just 55 degrees right now. now, the nice thing about marine layer kind of coming in and going out

regularly is it does help us a little bit with allergies. i looked right through the weekend. we're going to stay in that medium category. instead of getting into that high category. so that's a bonus tonight. also may be a bonus as well, is that we're going to start off with mostly sunny skies for the game in the giants. take on the dodgers. throwing out the first pitch about 6.45. but take that jacket because by the 7th inning, temperatures going down and that really marine layer will be rolling in it. just to show you this on fog cast, you can kind of stays along the coast. this is right when the game starts ray and then watch as the game goes on, that marine layer starts pushing and we could even see a little drizzle along the coast is get into the evening and overnight hours and this is the way we wake up tomorrow morning. so obviously a big difference far as how the game starts and how he gave that to take that jacket with you. you can see a little bit of that cloud cover as well as we look live from the east bay. and if you look at livermore is an example, one of our east bay spots, you can see the average high. 75 are expecting low 80's today. kind of steady as she goes over the next few days. but we do drop down a little bit

this afternoon. a new set of coronavirus variants known as flirt, sparking some concerns about a potential uptick in covid cases this summer. >> officials say for 2 weeks in april, the very made up about 30% of new cases in the united states. ucsf infectious disease expert doctor peter chin. hong tells me many of the symptoms are similar. 2 previous variants of covid. >> yes, probably going to be very similar doesn't mean that everybody is going out of a mild you know, we're still seeing covid in the hospital, believe it or not, just not that just the lowest point in the pandemic. but common theme of everyone that i've seen last with serious diseases that they didn't get a single vaccine in the last year. >> doctor chin-hong is encouraging everyone to get an updated vaccine, particularly

older people. and those who are immune compromised and the sec timmy's among younger men are on the rise after roe versus wade was overturned. university of utah researchers found the percentage of the sect me patients under 30 rose from around 6 to about 10%. and those rates are consistently higher in states considered hostile towards abortion. here in california where state leaders have promised to protect abortion rights. the sect news rose from 7 to 13% of patients per 100,000. among all ages. for your money. this afternoon, federal student loan rates are reaching their highest in a decade. the department of education reports loan rates for undergrads next year will rise more than 6 and a half percent. that's the highest interest rate in the last 12 years. graduate students will also seeing loan rates at almost 9%. the biden administration has yet to announce any plans to potentially reduce a freeze. the current interest rate percentage. still ahead here

madera the other inyo counties following some testing earlier thisrmonth. and the cdc has warned that people should not eat any meat that infected with cwd. so we want to learn a little bit more about this. so c d. w f veterinarian branded musk is joining us here now live to talk more about this issue and explain it all. thank you so much for joining us. brandon. i thank you very much for having so we'll start with the basic easy softball question here. what is chronic waste disease? free on disease in a pre-dawn just refers to infections, protein. so it's kind own class of diseases with a couple animal diseases. in a few human diseases that seem to be caused by a protein infections protein. >> and it's impacting make the deer's muscles are its nervous system. what is it? that's and it is infecting. >> it's a really slow

progression. and it's a slow degenerative disease that deer so does affect the brain. >> and what does it do to the deer? >> kind of highlighted in that in name chronic wasting disease. they lose condition over time get skinny. they waste away. they may become in coordinated and excessive drooling, some a taxi or or imbalance and some diary and some. pneumonia seemed to be pretty common as well. >> and this is the first time in california's history. we've seen this disease spread in the deer population of wondering first, how did you even know to do some testing for it? were we seeing sick deer? are people telling you about it and what does it mean that it's happening in these 2 counties that are i mean, i do the map in front of but to deer in 2 different counties like how to get from one to the other >> that's a great question. don't know. we don't know how it came to california. we may never know how it came to california. the fact that it was detected 2 counties that

are separated by this year. crest suggest that it's probably been here for a while and we've been looking for cwd in california since 1999. at an active surveillance program. for most of that, meaning we've been actively seeking samples to test for this disease. it wasn't until this year that we finally detected. so you had been looking for it. and sort surprised that you actually found at this time around. i'm not surprised that we found it. i was hoping that we had a little bit more as always, it was expected to be here was that was not a question of it was a question of when. >> andewhat do you do with the deer once that you have found them? it's a. >> it's a test that we can only do reliably here that that have already died. so and the mortality, the animals that have died. we if we have samples and tissues and stuff

we can to keep no cars and pretty on out of the human food chain and and cdc is some recommending the same. we recommend that hunters get their harvests tested and if it tests positive to not consume and you need from that animal. we have some work to do ahead of us and that we have to find out how much we have and where exactly it is. this is the first time we've detected in california. we're going ramp up our surveillance those areas. one of was detected in an area where there probably isn't much hunting, but there's probably fair amount of non migratory resident deer and around homes. so that might be a difficult area to get a better handle on we have. but let's all things that we're working towards now. >> so here in the bay area, when people see like deer out in there gardens, you know, eating all the tomatoes that they just spent all that time planting and eating their flowers are just wandering around out there. signs you

want people to be looking out for with the deer. and then if they see that they should probably notify you when you would take what steps that. >> yeah. so as i said, you know, chronic wasting disease are first to slow decline and a nutritional conditions. so they waste away. that is not a. that symptom that specific to chronic wasting disease. we've been testing animals that look like that again since 1999. is the first detect. it said currently. it's likely to be rare in an animal that looks like there's there's more likely causes foe a 50 year and in california to look like that. that being said, if you do see an animal that is. skinny and they see particularly like that as a wife, a stance which would suggest that it's that it's all in coordinated head hanging low years, drooping excessive drooling. those are additional clues that that it could be chronic wasting

dealing with addicts. they argue against what they call car several measures and other words, jail or prison time in 2023. >> we saw a crackdown on drug users. the sheriffs were activated to arrest. people use drugs in the heart of our city. 60% of those arrests involved. people of >> we see the ways that disrupts people's lives and actually contributes to overdose deaths. >> district attorney brooke jenkins sees the problem in a very different light. i think the fact that we have enabled drug use that we have condoned it and we've allowed it is what has caused this problem to everyone that i talked to who is in recovery right now, it has been successful, said that it was the criminal justice system that really propelled to decide that treatment was what they needed for themselves. they had to be forced in a way to make that choice for what was best for them. and so that's all that

we're trying to do is to make sure that we protect the most vulnerable from drug dealers, but also use this system to try to to to influence people to choose a better life for themselves. coalition members argue that crackdown measures only lead to more overdoses. >> they say san francisco needs to spend more money on prevention, treatment and community care facilities and say treatment should be available on demand. no waiting. >> we put so many barriers in people's way from meeting to have id from meeting to show up at a certain place at a certain time of wait, lance. but among those agreeing that tougher measures are critical. >> supervisor matt dorsey, who has overcome his own drug problems, he says with progress being made to reduce street level drug scenes advocating to turn san francisco streets into arrest free for all of public drug use is a lunatic fringe and are key, not sound public

health strategy. we have an obligation. >> as a body of government to intervene and help people again choose to a life worth living. catherine heenan. >> kron. 4 news. >> a controversial plan from san francisco city leaders to give free alcohol to homeless people suffering from alcoholism is getting some pushback. the city one initiative called the managed alcohol program. our map, it's been around for about 4 years. it has cost the city about 20 million dollars. supporters say the goal is not to eliminate alcohol use, but rather to keep individuals at a quote, safe level of intoxication, aiming to increase their safety and overall quality of life. but critics say this is only making the problems worse and the city should be focusing on helping these people beat their addiction. >> where's the medical supervision for when someone does hit that tipping point? if we were treating politics

i'm here in the bay area. of course, we're kind of splitting the difference there. cool out at the coast in spots like half moon bay, 70's and a spot like san jose. and then if we head inland, you can see some spots that are starting to pick up dublin out 70 to 71 in fairfield and check out kelsey bill affair at 87 degrees. that's where the warmth is really getting in but we are going to see some pretty nice temperatures today. a little bit above average. if you are inland, the wind not too bad, although fairfield getting a little bit gusty there. 21 miles per hour and we will start to see that return of that northwesterly flow as we go throughout the day today. so a little breezy in spots. the other thing we'll see the return of every layer. it will be a bit of an enhanced marine layer tonight yet again is expands kind of rolls and and once that happens, we start to see all of those clouds, the fog and even a little bit of coastal drizzle possible in the overnight tonight. so just be ready for that. the clouds will move in. it will be a little bit later in the evening. of course, we have a nice afternoons to get through first, but they will be pervasive that marine layer as we get into our morning
