in brentwood, vacaville calif still getting kelsey bill. a lot of us along the bay shore all the way up into the north bay are still hanging out in this 50's, though. so still cool, but warming for sure. and today is going to feel a lot like yesterday with some 70's for the most part for most of us. >> back to you. thank you, john. 10. 0, one right now. and our top story is the aftermath of a fire that broke out last night at a buddhist temple in san jose. and we have kron four's will tran. he's in san jose with more on what happened. >> an update to the story. the fire department just got back to me and they definitely believe this was not a hate crime. they have to consider that every time a religious building catches on fire. the possibility might be somebody came out here and set it on fire. but the update is they believe that people were outside of the area outside of the building cooking and then the fire spread to this building here and you can see the damage. it did. the fire department rushed out here,

but not before the fire ripped through this swing of the buddhist temple. there's literally a hole in the ceiling right now. 4 people were inside presumably months. they were able to get outside. nobody was hurt and they are staying at nearby buddhist temples in san jose. let me show you a picture of the fire. it actually started at around 8 o'clock last night. the fire department got here and they realize that the flames are very intense that they actually called for backup. they stayed here late last night to put out the hot spots. then they were able to leave this scene. yes, investigators will be back out here to look at exactly where the fire started, but they believe it was on the outside area and that they are calling this early on and accidental fire. >> 10, 0, 3 and new this morning, the national highway traffic safety administration has launched an investigation.

>> into waymo. yeah. they're self driving cars. reyna harvey here in the studio to talk more about that rain. >> darya james. so the agency they actually posted documents detailing the probe on their website after getting 22 reports and waymo cars either crashing or doing something that might have violated traffic laws. the documents state, the cars hit stationary objects. so in some cases the crash happened shortly after the waymo driving system. the hate unexpectedly near traffic control devices. agency says the poll was going to look at the system's performance in detecting responding to traffic control devices label says it makes over 50,000 weekly trips with riders in challenging environments waymo which is based in mountain view. they've been operating robo taxis without human safety drivers in arizona. and here in california, waymo released a statement saying they will work with the agency during the probe. don't send it back to both of the all right. thank you. reyna 10. 0, 4, right now. and why hondas?

that's the big story that we're following. these breaking into a honda specifically for their parts in san mateo county to their san mateo anyway. they've seen a spike. >> michael thomas is there with the story. good morning, michael. >> hey, good morning, everyone. that's right, daria. it's honda's. that's what they're after last week. within a matter of 4 days, they broke into more than a dozen does not only taking parts from the inside, but also breaking that driver. when don't. immediate. police department says last week it received 17 calls about car break-ins and all were hondas. >> the model's most targeted civics accord and cr-v knees and all were 2015 or newer. and officer jeremy threats as these thieves are after specific part, pacific lee for their air bags on driver's side or their driver's steering wheel. >> and that's something that we really seen in the past. >> he goes on to say these thieves use a screwdriver to pop up and the steering wheel. and once they've got the goods, they may be reselling them online as these parts can resell for up to 1000 bucks.

>> you know, over the last couple years, we've had the catalytic converter thefts were criminals with still the catalytic converters off the car and then somehow we sell to get money. we assume that this is same type of thing. >> the break-ins are all happening within a specific area of san mateo. and now the department says these may try to move on to other areas, which is why they want people to be aware. >> as of right now, they've been south of the 92. so so a lot of our vehicle break-ins are residential neighborhoods that are close to close to freeways. >> as of now, drivers are advised to park in well-lit areas double check their car alarms and invest in security cameras if possible. lastly purchasing a security club that lies across the steering wheel. could be your best bet. as it protects a specific area. these thieves are going for. >> suspects have been arrested as of yet. however, here in san mateo, the police department is working with neighboring departments to try and finalize a few suspects. as we get more details, we'll

continue to keep you updated. diane james, we'll send it back to you. but just keep in mind, if you've got a honda and you're in this area, the alert, be aware and make sure you're locking things up. >> all right. good advice. thank you very much, michael. 10. 0, 6, and in the east bay, oakland's new police chief is on the job second day. this was his first day yesterday at the helm of floyd mitchell started monday meeting members of the department, including here, the new recruits. he last worked as chief in lubbock, texas. and now that is the top cop in oakland. he's got a lot of priorities to get to. and one of them is building public trust. >> i'm looking forward to working with you and with members of the community to can say someone spend the rest of this week attending different meetings to get brought up to speed on several different things going on within the local police department and within this community. >> the chief also met with the command staff and they went over the latest crime figures. and here's one for burglaries overall are down by 51% over

last year. but residential burglaries are up by 110%. so the chief has his work cut out for him in the east bay. a man was convicted of killing a woman used to live with her body was found in alameda last summer. the alameda county da has just announced that joseph roberts was found guilty of second-degree murder for killing rachel buckner. she was from pleasanton and her body was found dismembered along the shoreline of bay farm island last summer. buckner and roberts live together at the time of her death. we don't know when you will be sentenced. >> in the north bay solano county police now looking for an inmate who walked away from a conservation camp. they say that james young was serving a seven-year sentence for robbery and other charges when he skipped out. now he was last seen on the campgrounds wearing a gray sweatshirt and pants. take a good look. police are asking that if you recognize him, if you know where he is, give them a call. 5 people, including 4 children, tried to run off with the cash register and

delay over the weekend. but they didn't get very far. the trick cash register had a tracker in it. so police were ipable to find them pretty quickly. let's show you a map. police say this theft happened saturday at a business on tennessee in ador streets and zoom in. 'lsee where that was. officers say one of the suspects actually hit the cashier with a handgun before taking off with that register. but policeound and arrested all 5 they also found the gun that was used and the stolen money too. >> it's 10, 0, 8, and a private elementary and middle school in newark has its last day of school ever. they suddenly closed down on friday a permanently. the owner says he feels terrible that the sudden closure caught the community off guard kron four's. philippe gaulle explains what happened. >> back in december, marshall and company property management filed a property commercial eviction lawsuit against new horizon school in newark, which is still pending in alameda county superior court assigned the private elementary and middle school that opened in 1988. was on the brink of collapse, though

many parents and staff members were unaware of how dire the situation was principal and owner victor dawson says he could not even afford to pay utilities leading to his swift decision to notify the community last week. all operations and instruction would permanently shut down in days. we have stop faucet from your big you know, we were again in a in a pretty. >> that situation over the past few months, several teachers left when they were notified by dawson that they would not immediately get paid. and through the school's final day last friday, dawson confirms many of the remaining 16 or 17 staff members were still unpaid. >> the complaint has been filed against the school with state labor regulators, which dawson acknowledged over the phone monday with kron 4, adding that he hopes to pay those owed money, working with the labor department on >> and we're we're in the process starts since as persistently lower enrollment

golden gate right now. and especially once you go up in the north bay, we're seeing pockets of it up there. but for the most part, we cleared out a little quicker than we did yesterday. futurecast shows the return of fog through the golden gate on into the bay 2 tomorrow morning. so another gray start tomorrow. but skies will clear even quicker tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow and thursday will be the warmest days in the forecast by only a couple of degrees is forecast is not changing all that much. low exits. the region high pressure stays put will contribute to what will be our warmest of the forecast the next couple of days before we gradually cool down into the weekend after that. now today, looking at a lot of similarities between yesterday and today, upper 50's to 60's at the coastline. well, 60's to 70's for most of the bay shore. burlingame in i-70 degrees comfortable in redwood city for some capello's at 76 and south bay. temperatures in the upper 70's to low 80's for same for much of the east bay livermore. you'll be 81 degrees. hayward's castro valley in the mid 70's. well,

waters of the san joaquin river in stanislaw county claimed the life of a 30 year-old woman. >> after she jumped in the water to save her 11 year-old daughter. we've had, you know, multiple. >> fatality incidents just in the last week contra costa county, a 5 year-old boy drowned over the weekend on bethel island. larry collins with cal oes fire and rescue says each fatalities serves as a sad reminder of the importance of water safety. exactly what we've been warning against. have a flotation on your body when you're in or near that cold water. >> staying out of the current really aware of where you are in relation to fast-moving current may is recognized nationally as water safety month and the organization courtney's cause works to prevent drownings, especially among kids. >> director of operations catherine rich says anyone living near water needs fiscal ways of stopping their kids family. but for doc. >> with the river like pretty ups to their house, having

>> well, 10, 20 is the time and convicted killer scott peterson's defense team is trying to get him a new trial by gathering new evidence. but the stanislaw county district attorney's office right now is opposing that move. it's the la innocence project that's now representing peterson and they want to test a rope and a stolen van for dna. that van burn near the peterson home about the time that his wife laci went missing the da's office, though, is asking the judge to deny that motion. they say because there's already enough evidence that was already introduced into trial that was used to convict peterson. peterson was convicted back in 2004 of the murder of his wife, laci and their unborn child. he's maintained his innocence. he's now serving a life sentence. well, the company, indeed, is laying off about 1000 employees. the company ceo says this round of layoffs, so the company can simplify their organization and make it easier to make decisions going forward and to be more effective in growing revenue. a letter shared with its workforce said that the layoffs affect many groups and

regions, but they're not going to be across the board. fact, the ceo said the impact jobs are mostly going to be here in the u.s. around this time last year, indeed, laid off 15% of its staff because of the decrease in job openings following the post-covid boom indeed has an office in san francisco located on mission street. it's unclear though, how many of those employees will be affected. >> red lobster or lapsed, as we say in boston is shutting down. 48 of the locations nationwide and one we know of in the bay area that is close rohnert park red lobster is closed in addition to the closures, they're going to do supply liquidation sale, auctioning off the kitchen equipment from the locations this week. red lobster has been facing some recent challenges filing for bankruptcy last month and posting an operating loss of about 11 million dollars. red lobster. really just 700 locations. plus all around the world. a new warning from the fbi and the department of

>> and we're back. time now is 10. 25 in pacifica, a man now is under arrest after driving away from a crash and then hitting a parked car. police say a 2 year-old child was in the car with him at the time. this was saturday. officers say that aguilar ran a red light and 2 stop signs before crashing into this parked car on and the way police say they recognize his car from the previous hit and run crash along highway one. you see them both on the map. no major injuries reported. thankfully the child was fine, but is now facing multiple charges, including felony child endangerment. a new study shows that pork prices are surging here in california. and this all comes as a result of the implementation of prop 12. that's the measure that prohibits california and out of state farmers from selling

aig's pork or veal. that comes from from animals in non compliant housing. they need to have space to move around prop 12 passed in 2018 and raised pork prices in our state by about 20% since july of last year. as a result, california's fresh pork consumption has gone down falling from what was 10% to now less than 8% as of this year. and you see the pics to think they yeah. >> all right, 10 26 right now. there's a new study from uc irvine is but your dreams. they found that your dreams after you have an emotional experience, they might help you feel better in the morning if you have a dream about it, they studied 125 women. they have the women look at images that were negative or neutral experience is like, for example, an image of a car crash, an image of a field of grass, right? so that create a motion in the woman. then they go to bed. and then the next day they talked about well, did how they feel after seeing

the museum. it's to help pay our mortgage. yeah. and this my first time here in julian swanson came down from san francisco. happy to be able to be here. can a little donation to them helping keep supporting local art. he says keeping arts alive in the bay has been a struggle. feel like it's difficult. you know what the downtowns, less traffic i can imagine has been a big hit for them. the hope is that the museum can collect enough funds from the community. it can create an endowment and stay open for years to come. in san jose moment kron 4 news. >> group of silicon valley nonprofits is going rally outside san jose city hall asking the mayor for more affordable housing. the real coalition is asking city officials to do more to preserve money that would fund permanent housing solutions in response to a plan that they say mayor matt mahan is pushing that plan would divert money away from measure e

which was originally set setting aside money for affordable housing city. officials are considering using that money to clear out homeless encampments along waterways and put people in temporary shelters. the rally is set for 12, 30 today. meantime, in san francisco, what's going on is nurses with the department of public health. they're voting today on whether authorize a strike because of pay and staffing. the union representing the nurses says they want the department to him implement safe staffing practices, agreed to competitive wages and contract enforcement and they say the department has rejected all their proposals and is refusing to negotiate a fair contract in response. they are taking that strike vote today. we reached out to the health department but haven't heard back. >> happening right now, protesters are rallying outside of google in mountain view this morning as they're calling on the company to divest from israel. that rally is set to happen. all right. now during the company's i o conference, that's where the company unveils new practices and innovations for

developers. the protesters say they want google to end its work with the israeli government and military. the rally is happening at the shoreline amphitheater. all right. take a look. a car flipped onto its side in fairfield. look at that. chp says they arrested the driver for suspicion of hit-and-run and dui an inside look, they found all these guns as well. they say the driver tried to run away after the crash, but officers caught up with him. >> time now is 10. 36 what happened at a cafe in san francisco is making news this morning because we're learning about how a thief tried to steal a woman's laptop, right? but a guy just having a cup of coffee save the day. yeah. turns out it was a security guard kron. 4 sarah stinson spoke with him. >> police say a man ran into this cafe, grabbed a laptop and ran right outside was a man named henry flynn who tackled the alleged thief to the ground and held him there until police arrived. security

cameras, thankfully couple whole thing on video. unfortunately, we did not get permission to use it. it literally felt like everyone inside the cafe was screaming. henry flynn was enjoying a cup of coffee outside sanaa cafe saturday evening when he says he saw a man running out with a laptop. flynn works as a security guard. so he says it fell natural to take matters into his own hands. i saw someone running out with the head. >> with a lot of talk in the right hand, almost like a football player would run with the football. i think the momentum of him running in the opposite direction of my arm, pushing him in another direction, made him stu1ble over towards one of the cars. that was part. and then i had the ability to jump on top of him. this video from frisco live 4, 1, 5, shows san francisco police arresting a 19 year-old man and flynn talking with officers afterwards about what happened. flynn learned from police that the man had snatched a laptop from a woman sitting inside who thinks to flynn and others got it back. >> did you speak to the woman who is left of? it was afterwards. i did. they're

election, less than 6 months away, the department of justice says it is going to crack down on anyone who threatens election workers as kron catherine heenan reports officials are promising that their prosecution will be relentless. >> if you threaten to harm or kill an election worker, volunteer or official, the justice department will find you. >> part of the reason this is making news again, the new survey showing that more than half the election workers in the country are worried about their safety. and with the november election just months away, there is concern that angry sometimes dangerous political partisanship will only escalate 3 years ago. the justice department created what it calls the election threats. task force among the 17 prosecutions and 13 convictions. since then, election threats. task force has secured the guilty plea of a man who threatened an election worker in michigan.
