can to do blend together this week. not a whole lot of changes going on out there. we're repeating a lot of factors from yesterday, including some of the great that we're seeing out overhead this morning. you're saying that as far south as san jose with some very gray skies overhead burn off occurring at a very similar amount of time as to what we saw yesterday as this blanket of mostly low clouds, but also a little bit of fog is affecting visibility on some of hillsides in the east bay, south bay and the north bay, too. fog remains pretty steady and stubborn at the coastline. winds are a little bit relaxed as compared to yesterday and i'm expecting less fog into tomorrow morning. that will allow temperatures to rise a little bit further for your wednesday tomorrow. as for today, though, it's 40's to 50's for current temperatures later on today. daytime highs will rise right back to the 70's to low 80's. much like they did yesterday right now. all right. on eve of that get busy out there on our highways and bridges already. >> they bridge right now. a 22 minute ride into the city. so things are starting to pick up

other bridges, though, are looking really light. so 13 minutes across the mateo bridge, not seen any accidents or hazards along richmond center fell 7 minute ride, golden gate bridge. 19 minutes on that. we have that fog. so slowing you down. take a look at our highways. how it for your picking up along the bay bridge, 80 for the rest of our highways are making good time. all james, back to you. thanks a lot. on our top story for people are displaced because of fire broke out last night in a buddhist temple in san jose. a lot of people scratching their heads over this kron. four's will tran live for us in san jose. now with the latest will. >> james, here's what you need to know. i know it's early on, but investigators don't believe it is a hate crime. they have to consider that every time i religious structure catches fire. but they don't believe so. you can see the damage. the fire actually started around 8 o'clock last night in the fire department didn't leave here until the overnight hours. it

just got it. at least that portion of the building right there. this is 97 fosse avenue, which is off of the alum rock avenue exit office, 6 ad about maybe a quarter mile. you can see the damage here. they had to stay in the overnight hours because of hot spots. let me show you the video it started at about 10 hours ago. 4 people were inside. happy to report to you that nobody was injured. there were the only 4 people presumably, of course, monks being a religious structure a buddhist temple. they were able to get out. the fire department got here and the fire quickly escalated. not sure if it has any smoke detectors inside, but they had to call for backup to the point where more firefighters arrived to the scene. it knocked down the flames. they dealt with the hot spots and then they put a fence right in front of it just to make sure to preserve the scene. i can tell you investigators will be back here a little bit later,

especially now now that the sun is up and they will go through there to try to find out what caused the fire as far as the 4 people displaced, they have been absorbed by other nearby buddhist temples to continue with your prayers. back to you. all right. thanks a lot. well. >> well, 603. now the time and breaking news, the national highway traffic safety administration has launched an investigation now into waymo's self-driving cars. the agency posted documents this morning detailing the probe on its website after getting 22 reports waymo cars either crashing or doing something that may have violated traffic laws. the document states, the cars hit stationary objects and in some cases the crash happened shortly after the waymo driving system behaved unexpectedly near traffic control devices. now the agency says the probe will look at the system's performance in detecting and responding to traffic control devices. waymo is headquartered in mountain view as we know released a statement saying that they will work with the agency during this probe.

>> speaking cars, a big car. this being targeted in specific by fees these days in san mateo honda. yeah, they're for their parts breaking into these hondas. >> taking the parts for crawford's michael thomas following the story for us in san mateo. good morning, michael. >> hey, good morning, everyone. that's right. and according to police, they say it all happened last week within a matter of 4 days to see more than a dozen hunters were all broken into and all of them have the driver's side window broken out. take a look. this is video of some of the vehicles that were talking about. they see that it happened last week from thursday to saturday. in total. they got a total of 17 calls during that time about car break-ins. and take a look on your screen. these are details of the type of vehicles and things that they're stealing. they see that the thieves are stealing steering wheel parts that contain driver airbags. and they're doing this using a screwdriver and these parts are costing up to $1000 or

chief michel last worked as a chief in lubbock, texas. he says that one of his top goals in oakland is going to be building trust. >> looking forward to working with you and with members of the community to can say someone to spend the rest of this week attending different meetings to get brought up to speed on several different things going on within the local police department and within this community. >> and the chief also met with the command staff and went over the latest crime figures. burglaries are down by 51% since last year. residential burglaries, however, are up by 110%. man has been convicted of killing a woman whose remains were found in alameda last summer. the alameda county da just announced yesterday. >> joseph roberts was found guilty of second-degree murder in the death of rockhill bachner raquel buckner was from pleasanton and her body was found dismembered along

the shoreline of bay farm island last summer. buckner and roberts live together at the time of her death. we don't know when he will be sentenced >> in the north bay salon, a county police now looking for an inmate who walked away from a conservation camp. they say that james zhang was serving a seven-year sentence for robbery and other charges. he was last seen on the campgrounds wearing a gray sweatshirt and pants. police are asking people with information to contact them immediately. they want to take him back into custody. 5 people, including 4 children, tried to run off with the cash register in valais all over the weekend. the police say that register they stole had a tracker inside and that allowed officers to find them fairly quickly. police say the theft happened saturday at a business on tennessee and amador streets. officers say one of the suspects to cashier with a handgun before taking off with that register police found and arrested all 5 suspects. police also found the gun and the stolen money. time now is 608. and as

temperatures warm up across the bay area as we head into summer, it's important to be vigilant. >> when you're around the water last weekend, there were multiple drownings, including a 5 year-old boy who drowned off of bethel island in contra costa county. and there was a mother who died in stands last county. she was trying to save her 11 year-old daughter who had fallen into the san joaquin river. several organizations are using this to highlight water safety importance and rivers are moving dangerously fast and it's cold temperatures as the snow melts. the water is cold. have a flotation on your body when you're in or near that cold water. >> staying out of the current really aware of where you are in relation to fast-moving current. >> fire rescue officials say that if you're ever near somebody who you see is going under and you're afraid

they're drowning to immediately call 9-1-1. and then >> try to reach him with a rope or a pole or throw if you have a flotation device. >> towards them. but don't go into the water yourself because there are multiple times at that results in more than one person dying as they try to rescue someone else. in the case of the mother over the weekend, she went in to try to save her daughter. the daughter is okay. but the mother didn't make it. dozens of parents and students in the east bay have been scrambling now to find a new school because their campus suddenly close the elementary and middle school new horizons had its last day on friday. the principal says the low enrollment limited staff and financial troubles or what led them to file for bankruptcy. he says the school could not even afford to keep the utilities going and they still owe about 16 staff members there pay at least 8 families who were unaware of the closure. paid next year's

tuition of $14,000 apiece for the family. the paid early. they have to wait 90 days now before they they can make a request to get reimbursed to get their money back since the school is gone. belly up. >> all rights extend the time. san jose was the first city in the country to have a museum dedicated to fabrics. but now raiders at the san jose museum of quilts and textile say they may have to close by the end of this year. workers at the museum say traffic to the museum has slowed down drastically since the pandemic. the museum says it needs to raise $300,000 by next month. if they want to stay afloat, it says it's raised about half of that so far but needs more support from the community. visitors to the museum say art in general needs to be supported. >> important as our consumers and our insurers to help continue supporting institutions like this because if you don't want to exist, i mean, especially in the bay area, if most people are aware so many have gone away that have existed in the past.

after this crash that happened in fairfield. you see the car flipped over and they addressed it did a driver on suspicion of hit and run as well as dui. am found guns in the car. the san francisco bay ferry has broken a ridership record after the pandemic their morning commute. now had more than 2300 riders a day last week. that's a big jump on the oakland especially home care. workers in sonoma county are going to rally for better pay today. the union says that workers are being paid less than the living wage in the county. the rally starts at 8.30 this morning at the board of supervisors meeting in santa rosa and thursday bike to wherever day in san francisco, in honor of national bike month, the san francisco bicycle coalition will have citywide rides and a rally at city hall, including of the golden gate bridge and the embarcadero. so i you know, like bike to school. but i like to wherever i go. where

fund that impact your life. everything from public safety to education. but now some members of his own party say it's not about what is funded, but what is not that has them outrage. these are difficult decisions. that was governor gavin newsom friday making it clear he's 288 billion dollar proposed budget. >> comes with some painful recommendations. he's proposing cuts to more than 250 programs across state government. all in his words to help close a projected 27.6 billion dollars projected shortfall. none of this is. >> i'm kind working. enjoy but you've got to do we have to be responsible. we have to be accountable specifically. he's calling for more than 18 billion dollars in cuts on a variety of fronts, including a slash to some 10,000 vacant state jobs and reductions for programs related to broadband access water, storage and local and state public health departments what i want to know. >> but the alternative, you know, we can we can eliminate our expansion of health care. we can eliminate.

>> wages we can limit. we do furloughs into layoffs. we can do a lot of things i want to do those things. but for those who local public health departments. >> they say the proposed cuts will impact services across the board. health professionals worry cuts could ultimately hurt efforts to prepare for a future. public health emergency detrimental. again, we're moving backwards. the bottom line is that if we lose this funding, people will lose their jobs and work will not get done. in a statement, democratic senator caroline manzo part of the san fernando valley blasted newsom's budget writing do not be deceived. these are not just cuts to administrative costs. these draconian cuts have real life and death consequences and will push our most vulnerable children. families, an aging californians into homelessness and starvation. but her fellow democrats, including assembly speaker robert reverse, an assembly budget committee chair jesse gabriel. we're more optimistic, noting. well, newsome is taking 12 billion dollars from the state's reserves. they make clear the state will still have at least half of its rainy-day fund

left for future years. keeping core services and tact. that's newsom's key message on what he considers some of the positives of this budget proposal. noting it invest in services for public safety, education and housing and homelessness. people want they want to see results. the republicans argue newsom could have avoided this entire situation committed to spending less and saving more in previous years. look, it's his own fault because they made all these promises to people all these things. they said they're going to do and ntw they're going to have to break those promises. and lawmakers have until june 15 to review the governor's proposal and pass a fully balanced budget if they fail to do so. >> they will not be paid reporting at the state capitol. wallace kron. 4 news. >> alright 6.21. is the time and indeed is apparently laying off about 1000 employees. the company ceo says this round of layoffs is so that the company can simplify organization in order to make it easier for them to make decisions and help more effectively grow revenue and

infected. prison officials decided to transfer 122 inmates to san quentin, which had no known covid cases within 3 weeks. the virus spread to 500 inmates and staff at san quentin. california is now facing 4 lawsuits from families of those who died. the supreme court denied the state's appeal for immunity with no comment, no dissent and all lawsuits may now proceed. >> well, convicted killer scott peterson's defense team is trying to get him a new trial by gathering new evidence. but the stanislaus county d strict attorney's office is opposing that motion. so the loss angeles innocence project is representing peterson now and they want to do dna testing on rope and a stolen van that was burned near the peterson home around the time that his wife, laci went missing. the da's office is asking the judge to deny that motion because of all the evidence that was previously used to convict peterson. peters was convicted back in 2004 of the murder of his wife, laci and their unborn child. connor peterson

has maintained his innocence. he is currently serving a life sentence in prison in the east bay. a man was sentenced to house arrest for shutting down the computer network of the discovery bay water treatment facility back in 2021. so prosecutors from the department of justice say that rambler gallo purposefully and installed a system on that computer network, a system that runs the automated monitoring system that protects the entire water treatment process. they say he admitted to remotely accessing the system from his personal computer after resigning from a company that was contracted with discovery bay gallo was sentenced to 6 months of house arrest. he had to forfeit his computer and must pay more than $44,000. now in restitution. >> it's 6.27 coming up on the kron. 4 morning news next. a tribute to vietnamese heritage in san jose. the re imagined garden where they just broke ground.

>> 6.29. right now we're checking out the weather. it was so windy. yes, know. did you go out? >> i did go out and i had to come in and about a half hour because the wind and my allergies and fire you kind of feel beat not you know it, but only if the eye like a flag. and when, you know, i are the winds. what's the story with the winds this week, john, is it going to come down at all? yes, we do see a relax seabreeze today and tomorrow and thursday will actually be even calmer yet, which is going allow temperatures to climb a little bit further. >> got to think those winds because they're helping to moderate our temperatures. keeping us from getting to terribly hot. we're we're sitting this morning. it a product of those wind, some of that cool ocean air and the

marine layer that is making us kind of gray this morning and scooted well in through the day on to the carquinez, even into the delta in the central valley. we do have some low visibility in spots of the north bay as well as the east bay hills. so do watch for a few areas where you may encounter some of that. there's those winds pushing in from the coast. this is all in on shore breeze. so that cooling effect that it's having on us. it's quite noticeable and will again today. keep us comfortable enough 40's to 50's for current temperatures, oakland and alameda at 53 hayward, one of our more mild spots at 57 degrees right now. later on today, daytime highs will reach the 70's to low 80's just as they did yesterday, right? all right, john, thank you. the roads today, we're starting off pretty busy traveling into the city right now about 18 minutes. no accidents on your morning commute on these bridges. but just a lot of people hitting the road. 15 minutes on the san mateo bridge, was ever feel bridge around 12 minutes. checking on the golden gate bridge doesn't talk about the

fox. thankfully it's not slowing you down a 19 minute ride and those highways that are slow down get busy highway for traveling to india. 8.80 as you're hitting the roadways, traveled to hayward the bay bridge. you see that right there. things are a little busy, jim barton bridge to 1. you're still making great time. darya. james, back to you. thanks a lot. 6.31. and over the weekend. customers at a san francisco cafe. >> stopped a man from taking off with the woman's laptop. a kron four's. sara stinson spoke with one of the people who help prevent the theft. >> police say a man ran into this cafe, grabbed a laptop and ran right outside was a man named henry flynn who tackled the alleged thief to the ground and held him there until police arrived. security cameras thankfully cut the whole thing on video. unfortunately, we did not get permission to use it. it literally felt like everyone inside the cafe was screaming. henry flynn was enjoying a cup of coffee outside sanaa cafe saturday evening when he says he saw a man running out with

a laptop. flynn works as a security guard. so he says it fell natural to take matters into his own hands. i saw someone running out with a hood. >> with a lot of talk in the right hand, almost like a football player would run with the football. i think the momentum of him running in the opposite direction of my arm, pushing him in another direction, made him stumble over towards one of the cars. that was part. and then i had the ability jump on top of this video from frisco live 4, 1, 5, shows san francisco police arresting a 19 year-old man and flynn talking with officers afterwards about what happened. flynn learned from police that the man had snatched a laptop from a woman sitting inside who thinks to flynn and others got it back. >> did you speak to the woman who is left of? it was afterwards. i did. they're really cool. husband or boyfriend. yeah, actually, i my phone that what i was running after the guys. so they like the minimum. can we venmo you a little bit of money? just so you can get your phone fixed and i would because not really too worried

about that. this video has circulated on social media. people are now calling flynn a hero, but he humbly disagrees. most people want to do the right thing. it just takes one person to really. >> i get ahead of it and everyone else will follow. flynn is a fourth-generation san franciscan who is fundraising to run for mayor this november. see myself as representing the silent majority, the city, which is the working class in bread and butter the city. i think what we need right now is the same way what happened at that cafe where everyone came together. >> we need that citywide. we need everyone coming together who's invested in the heart and soul of the root system of the city like myself, the man accused of the laptop theft was booked into jail and charged with grand theft and second-degree burglary. >> i'm sara stinson reporting back to you. >> 6.34 right now and a man has been arrested and called my accused of stealing this motor home. police noticed that the motor home was parked a shopping center on coleman boulevard and they ran the plates. they found it had been reported stolen out of concord

officers later found the driver of the motor home have 3 warrants. he was arrested and booked into the san mateo county jail and the motor home was towed and returned to its rightful owner. take a look at what happened in fairfield. a car flipped on its side and chp arrested the driver for hit and run and dui and they found look, these guns in the car. the driver, they say, tried to run from the police after the crash, but the officers caught up with them. >> in pacifica, the man now is under arrest after driving away from a crash and then hitting a parked car. police say a 2 year-old child was in the car with him. this all happened saturday. officers say that duval do aguilar ran a red light and 2 stop signs before crashing into that parked car on and and away. police say they recognized his car from previous hit and run crashes on highway one. no major injuries were reported. thankfully, the child is fine.

aguilar, though, now is facing multiple charges, including felony child endangerment. also happening today, protesters will rally outside of google in mountain view this morning to call on the company to divest from israel. the rally is set to happen during the company's i o conference where the company plans to announce new productions and their new products and innovations. the protesters say they want google to end its work for the israeli government and military. the rally is set to start at 9 o'clock this morning. it will be at the shoreline amphitheater. >> and 6.35, and today in the north bay, home care workers in sonoma countering are going to rally at the board of supervisors meeting. they want better pay the union for the workers says their workers are paid less than the living wage in the county and they say low wages are contributing to a shortage of caregivers. that rally starts at 8.30 this morning at the meeting in santa rosa. in san francisco, nurses with the department of public health are set to vote

today on whether they're going authorize a strike over staffing levels. the union for the nurses says that they want the department to implement safe staffing practices, agree to competitive wages and contract enforcement. they say the department rejected all of their proposals and the department is refusing to negotiate a fair contract. and in the members are going to take that all vote authorizing a strike today. we reached out to the health department for comment, but we haven't heard back. >> in the south bay group of silicon valley nonprofits plan to rally outside of san jose city hall to ask the city for more money to be put towards affordable housing. so the real coalition is the name of this group and they're asking city officials to do more to preserve money that would fund permanent housing solutions in response to a proposal. they say matt mayer hand met. mayor matt mahan is pushing. so the proposal would divert money away from measure e which originally set aside money for affordable housing city officials are considering using that money to clear

homeless encampments along waterways and police residents in temporary shelters. the rally is set for 12, 30 this afternoon. we'll tell you what happens. >> 6.37 and a major setback in the effort to try to stop public money from going towards the stadium in las vegas. so the proposed ballot measure written by the nevada teachers union apparently will not be appearing in the next election. kron four's dan kerman explains why. when the battle lawmakers approved spending 380 million dollars in public money to help fund a stadium in las vegas last june. the nevada teachers union took steps to reverse that decision by putting the issue to a public vote. this november. now that won't happen. the nevada supreme court upheld a lower court ruling that the proposed ballot measure was not written correctly and petition signatures cannot be gathered until it's read and to comply with state law fighting billionaires is never easy. this is just minor setback. alexander marks with the teachers union schools over stadium says the ruling means

the measure won't appear on this november's ballot because now there are only 44 days left to rewrite the petition and then collect the 102,000 signatures with no state elections in 2025. that means the next chance for a public vote is november of 2026. but schools over stadiums remains undeterred. this still remains incredibly unpopular locally. it's still under water. 20%. >> you know, preventing the teachers from going out there ensure every student has a high-quality public education is probably not going help with their polling either. but, you know, we we remain committed to try and help fix the misguided priorities of the state. so not much has really changed. in a statement, the attorney who represents the coalition opposing the ballot measure, which includes the a's, was pleased with the ruling saying all nevadans have a right to participate in direct democracy, but they need to observe the laws that require properly informing the voters of a proposal. this measure failed to do that. all they

alameda county jury has convicted a boyfriend, a rachel buckner in her brutal murder last summer, joseph roberts was found guilty of second-degree murder. body was found dismembered along the alameda shoreline. no word yet on when roberts will be sentenced. convicted killer scott peterson's defense team is trying to get a new trial by gathering new evidence they want to dna test a rope and a stolen van that was burned near the peterson's modesto home around the time that his wife, laci went missing. the da's office, though, is asking a judge to deny the motion because of all the evidence that's already been previously used to convict peterson. solano county police are looking for this inmate. james zhang, who walked away from a conservation camp. he was last seen on the campgrounds wearing a gray sweatshirt and pants. and a museum dedicated fabrics in san jose may close its doors by the end of the year. workers at the museum say foot traffic has gone way down since the pandemic. the museum says it needs to raise $300,000 by next month to stay afloat. it's raised about half
