10:00 am
life and legacy of reverend cecil williams. >> from the bay local news station, you're watching you on morning team. >> good morning and thanks for joining us on a monday. i'm darya james want to start off this hour with a check of the weather. as you may have noticed, a few blast outside. it's a little gray today. yeah, i didn't think stick around for quite awhile morning, john. yeah, it's going to be a slow burn off. as far as the fog goes today, we're still seeing it pretty dense out there for most areas and not just closer to the coast at the golden gate, either. this guy right here shows you downtown san francisco and or the gray, but we're seeing it all the way up to santa rosa and all the way down to san jose or for inland spots to the east are where we are actually getting quite a lot of sunshine. it does burn off. but with that continued seabreeze, a moderation in temperatures can be expected. nothing too terribly hot today. so we'll get to the sunshine and temps will be feeling pretty good. so patience is key today. 50's
10:01 am
for current temps, although brent, what you are for spot along with kelsey bill up to 70 degrees right behind you vacaville, you can see that sunshine already having its impact for those very far inland spots. little peek of sunshine at sfo right now. daytime highs later today do reach the 70's for the bayshore and a few 80's for inland spots. back to you. thanks a lot to it is 10 o'clock. and in about 15 minutes, a new chapter begins for oakland. they have a new police chief takes over floyd mitchell. we've been following the developments of this for more than a year now. as oakland. >> finally has a new police chief will tran following the story for us live. good morning. well, >> it's basically the first day at your new job or new school. i feel bad for eons high. many names this he have to memorize and that's what he wants to do for the first 100 days is to get to know his staff. it will happen in oakland in 15 minutes are now as far as his first opening remarks. of course, you don't
10:02 am
remark just to the media. you are sending remarks to your staff as well. so i'm sure the oakland police department, the officers will be watching florida mitchell comes to oakland from lubbock, texas. they search for more than a year all over the country. and at one point, the former police chief, he wanted his job back. but mayor sheng thao said no, we will continue looking and they ultimately found floyd mitchell back in march. that's when they made the announcement and today will be his first monday on the job. lots going on for him. a lot of people will be watching to see how he tackles crime. there is public perception out there that oakland, the crime is simply out of control in that particular city. despite the crime rates showing that it is actually down this year from the same time last year. but public public perception is public perception and they will have to tackle that. mayor sheng thao abruptly fired lebron armstrong more
10:03 am
than a year ago. the ron armstrong, he is suing the city of oakland for wrongful termination. and at one point, as i mentioned, during the search for a new police chief, many people in oakland, including armstrong, wanted his job back. that was not the case. floyd mitchell, he's been a police chief twice. this is his 3rd job as top cop before 11, texas. he was also the chief in tyler, texas. he comes to oakland and he will be meeting the community and the officers. we will try to bring his opening statements before the end of the 10 o'clock newscast. and it is not just oakland, by the way, that is dealing with problems. the city of oakland has problems. you might recall last june they could have had millions of free dollars from the state to try to fight organized retail theft. instead, oakland, the mayor's office miss the deadline. >> i was a good. alright, thanks a lot. well at 10, 0,
