>> when fun time from the bay area's local news station. you're watching kron. 4 news. >> now at 10, a sunday church service and with a stabbing in san francisco. we have the very latest on the victim and the suspect. good evening and thank you for joining us for kron. 4 news at 10. i'm dan thorn, san francisco's north beach neighborhood shaken up this afternoon by a stabbing outside iconic church. witnesses say the victim was

attending a service at saints. peter and paul catholic church when he was attacked by a knife wielding man kron four's. sara stinson reports. >> a scary sunday in san francisco's north beach. a person stabbed in front of the iconic saints. peter and paul catholic church during service. video from the citizen app shows emergency crews rushing to help the victim kron. 4 confirmed the man is a churchgoer. someone who works at saints. peter and paul says a homeless man was disrupting the sunday service. and when asked to leave, he got physical and the homeless man then pulled out a knife and a parishioner outside the church. i saw him. >> this guy being pinned down. and that's when we heard he got stabbed. so top of steps of the looking out and all of us and i go, oh, my the frightening scene played out on filbert street around one in the afternoon. the victim

was later taken to the hospital that we're just going just pray and see what happens. police say they arrested a man who witnesses identified as the attacker. >> the church worker says it scares them to know that the man was armed while inside the church. we didn't know we had a knife. he could have done something this happened in supervisor. aaron peskin is district reached out to me, says he's aware of the stabbing. >> and he's in contact with police. he also tells me the victim is recovering and expected to be okay. i'm sara stinson reporting in north beach. back to you. >> new video shows person attacking a waymo driverless car in san francisco. this video captured in the area of market and dolores streets last night shows a person kicking in the windshield while standing on the car's hood. the person is then seen sitting down and that smashed in windshield. it's unclear why this person did this. but we have reached out to sfpd and waymo for more information or comment and so far have not heard back. this is now the

second time the waymo has been trashed here in the city. 14 year-old is now being charged for setting this waymo on fire back in february. police say a crowd sprayed graffiti on the driverless car, broke a window and then threw a firework inside the car. and that turned into this there were no passengers inside at the time and no one was hurt. new video tonight of a street takeover in oakland ending with a motorcyclist injured. oakland police say they were taken to a hospital after colliding with a car. the motorbikes took over bellevue and grand avenues a little after one this afternoon during the investigation. several dirtbike stroll through the area causing safety hazard to everyone on the scene, 50 more bikes were also seen circling the lake, some riding on the sidewalk and even driving in the opposite direction of traffic. a shooting along

oakland's hegenberger corridor sense of person to the hospital this afternoon, police were called to the area near raising cain's and the now closed in turn out to investigate reports of that shooting just before 2 o'clock today. this is video from the citizen app. police say they found evidence of a shooting but they could not locate anyone who may have been involved a short time later, a call came in from the hospital, notifying police of a person who had been shot took themselves there. their injuries are said to be non life threatening. this is still an investor and an active investigation. police are also investigating a murder suicide after a woman and a man were found shot in hayward. police say they found the 2 and a parked car on whitney avenue last night. the 31 year-old woman was shot in the passenger seat of the car. a 36 year-old man was found with a gunshot wound in the driver's seat. he was taken to the hospital where he later died. witnesses said they heard the 2 people arguing before the gunshots went off. police believe the man shot

the woman before shooting himself. their identities have not yet been released. the investigation is ongoing tonight. campbell, police say a driver under the influence was behind the wheel of this car that smashed into a pole at a crosswalk. the city's police department shared this picture on social media, reminding people to choose the safer option if you need to travel anytime you're drunk, buzzed or high, be it. a rideshare app. a taxi public transportation designated driver or just good old fashion walking. a great whale was found dead just off the shore of alameda in the san francisco bay. you can see it right here behind me right now. we don't know how this whale died, but we do know that it is a popular time of year for the whale species to swim up the coast. kron four's jack moment reports. so normally this time of year, gray whales are seen swimming north along the california coast on their way to alaska.

now has of these last few years. it's not uncommon to see a gray whale make its way inside san francisco bay. but researchers did tell me it could take some time to determine exactly how that gray whale did die. >> it's a whale that celebrated. i think they're just like magical creatures. just could newt. he can't get enough of that. it just makes me realize like how small we are as humans >> how they're dealing with all this. but mori point in pacifica, the mood is somber sad to hear when that happened. a great whale, one of thousands that migrate up the pacific coast every year. >> won't be completing its journey. it was found dead this weekend up the coast of alameda. and then we received another call this morning, both flannery with the california academy of sciences says she saw the whale's carcass this morning. so far, no signs of a ship strike or being tangled in rope. we will open the whale up. >> we will look inside. it will look for signs of cause of death, whether resets great winds were dying around the world for years. only now. >> has the species started to

recover? she says the reason for the whales decline with climate change, reducing the whales, food source and starving them to death. basically they weren't getting enough high quality food in the arctic during their summer feeding season. we don't know yet if that's what killed this gray whale flannery hopes the whale washed up locally and they can study it makes me sad. more whale watchers like an overhaul and half moon bay. >> want to see the whale species be healthy, especially you think a full, the hard work they've done. you know, mike waking back from mexico all the way. and then they end up dying. you know, planner says for every unfortunate, well, death its an opportunity to learn. >> although it's unfortunate its an opportunity for us to learn and scientifically what's going on with them and more about their population. and another silver lining. is this gray well dying in the bay does mean there are other great whales here making their way up north. and if you want to see one yourself, you have until about early may to do so. in pacifica, jack moment. kron 4 news.

>> all right. let's get you a check of your 4 zone forecast tonight. taking a live look from our mount tam cam. a warm one out there today may be a little warm still this evening, gayle ong joining us with a look at the forecast >> and another warm and monday to so we will be a very will have a very similar forecast tomorrow. and we are quite mild. and these are the highs today. we saw more 80's inland and upper 70's along the east bay shoreline. a little cooler by the coast here at half moon bay, 59 degrees. was that forecast high and you can see if that was the high today, too. so of current conditions right now, 57 degrees in san francisco. pretty mild night out there. >> a nice, refreshing breeze to a 68 still in livermore and upper 60's in concord as well. so here are the current wind speeds. we're all pretty light right now and evening watch out for a few passing clouds and also some coastal fog in the morning. but overnight lows are still going to be mild in the upper 50's and mid

them, referring to the israeli hostages still being held by coming up a little bit later on in the show. we're going to have the latest. >> as israel launches another attack on the city of rafah happening tomorrow. there says it's san francisco's kaiser permanente. medical center are joining a statewide strike there protesting what they say is unregulated, artificial intelligence in hospital practices. nurses say they want to highlight patients safety concerns amid the industry's rush to implement untested technology. monday's protest will include and members of the california nurses association. the strike begins at noon. >> the buckeye a return to san jose today featuring food and music and lots of family fun. there are slides. anna petting zoo for the kids in the event closes 6 miles of city streets to cars that allows people to walk and ride bikes and

>> golden gate ferry service between sausalito and san francisco is still suspended tomorrow. damage was discovered at the sausalito up here on friday. shutting down the ferry. and until it's running again, buses will be provided to get people across the golden gate. the ferry service says that they apologize for this inconvenience and it's still unclear when the ferrr service will resume. in the north bay part of highway. 37 closed off for the weekend is set to open back up tomorrow morning. caltrans says it's a repaving, the westbound lanes this weekend and next weekend and then crews are going to begin work on the eastbound lanes for the first 2 weekends of may. they're encouraging travelers to use detours the westbound lanes again are going to reopen tomorrow morning at for. san francisco's infamous public toilet gets a celebration full of party puns and fun. inouye valley, the restroom making headlines after its initial million dollar price tag. but its reptacement was

san francisco, 05:00am looks like there will be 0 visibility. and then it turns out half moon bay that will impact you later on in the afternoon. and oakland 3 miles out there. so just keep that in mind. low clouds will be hanging out by the coast tomorrow, but most of us are mostly sunny. so here are those warm temperatures once again tomorrow. we'll start to see more 80's inland. 81 in concord, 82 in livermore and san jose, 80 expected in santa rosa for you cooler by the coast as 60's by the beaches, upper 60's in san francisco. so we are quiet right now on our storm tracker. but we are tracking some rain here. we have a this area of low pressure expected to make its way towards the middle of the week. so you can see we're clear now come looks like you can notice those clouds around the coast, passing clouds in the north bay as well. but most of us are sunny inland. and then tuesday, wednesday, those clouds roll in starting thursday, late thursday, friday, a chance of some rain.

fremont. firefighters responding quickly to the hill. the home located on truman place. they were able to put it out about 20 minutes. thankfully no one was inside. no one was hurt. no other buildings were damaged. take a look at this. san francisco police posting these pictures up coffee with a cop. they said on social media that the captain and the officers from the terrible station had another great time meeting and greeting with the public. this was at lucky supermarket at lake shore plaza coffee with a cop is an event that helps many stations use a way to create relationships between police officers and the public. sad news for garlic lovers, the popular gilroy garlic festival being canceled indefinitely event has been around since the 1970's and has attracted tens of thousands of people to gilroy. the festival association says the cancellation is because of lingering uncertainties from the pandemic, along with the insurance requirements and to make things prohibitive by the

to block a new fee that's expected to be on our electrical bills next year. customers of our state's biggest utilities, including >> southern california, edison and pg and e will see a $24 charge every month and because of the fee increase, regulators are looking to reduce electricity rates. in the meantime, community groups say it will hurt low-income residents. the california public utilities commission is expected to approve the fee next month. environmental protection agency. is approving a higher blend of ethanol to be sold across the nation for the 3rd time in a row, the 3rd summer in a row, the agency announced emergency waiver friday that would exempt gas blended with 15% ethanol from summertime ban. the higher. bland has not been

welcome back to kron. 4 news at 10, a far-reaching case on homelessness is scheduled to go before. >> the u.s. supreme court tomorrow justices will consider arguments on whether it's legal for local governments to punish people for sleeping outside when

there's no shelter space available. the case comes as cities and several western states struggled to deal with the rise in homelessness. this is the first time the supreme court will be hearing a case on homelessness and over 40 years, senate could have serious implications for both the rising homeless population across the country and city officials working to deal with their negative side effects. so let's break down the case. grants past the johnsons johnson. the justices will have to decide if it's considered cruel and unusual punishment to essentially kick some of the public private. to kick someone out of public property if they are caught sleeping outside grants, pass a small rural run city in oregon whose policies are at the center of the case. if the supreme court rules in favor of the city would make it easier for them to remove so-called 10 cities of unhoused individuals. they could continue to find ticket or even jail people for sleeping on the streets. but if they side with the homeless and overturn the lower court's decision, it would set a

precedent that cities would have to offer anyone camping out in public places. alternative housing or access to shelters, volunteers who help the homeless in grants they're eager to know how the highest court in the land is going to rule. >> i would say i'm in this situation is only escalating and we're seeing more and more people on house. and at the same time we're seeing more and more friction and frustration from community members on both sides because we've been paralyzed last 5 years waiting for the court case to be over a gas. and while we see the problem continually growing, we're not seeing resources being added to it tops apart, making it stop. >> right now, according to the most recent data in the united states, there are an estimated 650,000 people experiencing homelessness between 2022 2023. there was a 12% increase. and in 2023, the number of unhoused families rose 16%. oral arguments are

set to begin tomorrow. their decision is expected to drop by the end of june, laying out guidelines for cities to manage homeless populations here in california, the governor announced nearly 200 million dollars in funding that he says will help local communities clear encampments and provide much-needed resources to californians experiencing homelessness. but some here expressing skepticism over the state's ability to properly track results. this after a california audit report from earlier this month concluded that the state invested 24 billion dollars over the last 5 years to tackle homelessness. but every track those investments worked or lead to positive outcomes. the audit did show that statewide homelessness increased by 50% between 2013 2023. now to some other news tomorrow is earth day and in celebration of that, governor newsom is announcing. >> california's newest state park, the governor and the first partner will be in stanislaus county for the big

some 60's in the forecast. a very pleasant day for a lot of us really and look out for some passing clouds, possibly by the coast as well. if you're going to spend time outdoors, mount temple, pius, for example, it looks like you will be in the 50's a 07:00am. 53 degrees. 10:00am upper 50's warming up to the low 60's by the 01:00pm hour with the light breeze there, some clouds and mostly cloudy as you make your way towards the afternoon. so we're quiet right now on our satellite and radar. but stay tuned because we are tracking changes in the weather once again. that won't be until later this week. here is livermore, for example, starting off in the 80's this week and then take a look down to the 60's around wednesday, thursday. and it looks like will be rebounding back to the 70's by next weekend. but we have an area of low pressure that will be taking over. so we're clear now monday morning, it looks like the coast will see some clouds, but mostly clear for us inland as well. and then tuesday,

away and we'll be back to some nice, comfortable temperatures in the low 70's and upper 60's. back to you. all right, thanks a lot. in the south bay, a man was robbed and attacked in north fair oaks earlier today. >> police say the victim was getting out of his car when someone punched him in the face and then stole some of his personal belongings before running away. officers say the thief was last seen running on 8th avenue. the victim had to be taken to the hospital. no arrests have been made. the cupertino city council approving millions in service cost production resulting in some of the largest cuts to city services as officials work to balance a multimillion dollar budget deficit. city officials approved a 9 million dollar reduction last week in an effort to balance a budget shortfall. a 15 million dollars other constand clued reducing public works contracts in cutting vacant positions. they say this will save nearly 2 million dollars. the deficit comes from a loss and apple sales taxes after an

audit last year. today, the san francisco cherry blossom festival's grand parade was interrupted by a group of palestine protesters. this is video from the citizen app in the background. you can hear one person say release the hostages, referring to the israeli hostages still being held by hamas. this all comes as israeli airstrikes on rafah killed at least 22 people last night, according to gaza's health ministry, 18 of those people were children. israel's continuing near daily air strikes in rafah amid international calls for restraint. the foreign aid package passed by the u.s. last night will give israel 26 billion dollars. it also includes 9 billion dollars in humanitarian aid for gaza. and the house's bill is making its way to the senate tuesday where another vote is likely to take place. the 95 billion dollar aid package passed this weekend includes billions in funding to israel. but these latest developments in the middle east could affect the
