golden gate bridge. 37 of the tolls looking at 20 minutes here on a friday is back to you. thank you. in the east bay charges have been filed against 3 alameda police officers involved in the death of mario gonzalez. may remember he died back in 2021 while being restrained by police kron four's. sara stinson walks us through the latest in the story. >> officers eric mckinley, james fisher and cameron leahy, leahy have each been charged with one count of involuntary manslaughter. alameda county district attorney pamela price announcing charges against 3 officers involved in the death of mario gonzales. >> on the eve of what would mark 3 years since the deadly encounter on april. 21st 2021. alameda police responded to a call for a report of a man at a park talking to himself and scaring the colors wife. when police arrived, they attempted to take him into custody, but a struggle ensued. police body cam video shows 3 officers

pinning gonzales down for several minutes. the coroner ruled his death a homicide saying officer restraint played a role along with other contributing factors under the former district attorney nancy o'malley. prosecutors concluded there was not enough evidence to warrant criminal charges against the officers. price reopen the case along with 7 other cases involving custody deaths. the da's public accountability unit reexamined the evidence and filed charges against the officers thursday. price says she is not directly involved with this case that i'm walled-off from the case. i will not be participating and have not participated in. >> the ultimate decision about the case, the attorney of then alameda police officer james fisher tells me he doesn't believe price. topping honest with the public. >> about role in reopening the case to begin with. and frankly, i'm sure a role in making the decision to charge

on. but really the last day that you could charge case. michael rains says his law firm just started to represent fisher. so he still looking into the case. >> but he says he's confident his client followed police protocol. the family of gonzales settled a wrongful death lawsuit against the city of alameda and the officers involved for 11 million dollars back in december. the attorney representing gonzales, his 8 year-old son michael haddad, spoke with us on the phone saying in part, the charges are obviously appropriate. it's been obvious for a long time. in addition to costing the city 11 million dollars. these officers should also face a jury who can decide if they should be held criminally responsible to at the press conference. price said the officers charged face 15 years to life but then emailed us a correction saying they actually face up to 4 years behind bars. thursday was the last day to file any charges against the officers due to statute of limitations.

>> in the newsroom, sara stinson back to. >> 603, right now. and the 3 men accused of killing a kron 4 security guard while protecting our news crew in oakland appeared in court yesterday. the 3 face murder, attempted robbery and assault with deadly weapon charges for the killing of kevin nishita in november of 2021. she is wife tells kron 4 that the plea hearing was continued until next month. oakland police officers made several arrests for a series of tobacco-related robberies throughout the bay. the most recent and included one that happened tuesday morning on mountain boulevard and shown avenue a truck driver was delivering tobacco products when 2 vehicles pulled up, people came out armed with guns. they stole the tobacco products and took off oakland police along with several law enforcement agencies arrested 8 people in connection with those robberies in oakland, stolen tobacco and firearms were recovered. on the

peninsula. one person is dead after their car went off a cliff that gray whale cove state beach in montero. that's just south of north of moss beach. >> crash happened about 1 o'clock thursday afternoon. this is video of that recovery attempt. firefighters say the vehicle fell about 200 feet down the cliff. the chp helicopter lowered a rescuer on to the rocks where that vehicle came to rest. but unfortunately, the person inside had already died. we're still working to learn the cause car went off the cliff in the first place. cal osha has cited the san francisco construction company in connection with a trench collapse that killed utility worker. the tragedy happened back in september and the city's lower haight neighborhood. police say the 24 year-old employee was replacing sewer parts inside that 8 foot deep trench when the excavation collapsed. cal osha has determined the worker's employer, darcy and hardy construction, inc

knowingly committed safety violations by not providing a protective system for employees working in the trench, nor means of escape. for a ladder. let's say in the case of a collapse, the company has been cited more than $370,000 for that incident. time now 605 council meeting was once again interrupted. >> by a man spreading hate. here's video from what happened during wednesday night's meeting the city council member. it recounts what happened. the man at the podium came in from sacramento and he made hateful comments against the jewish community. and there's the file video from the last time this happened in march. he showed up to spew hate then as well during wednesday's meeting, the community was prepared, though, to denounce it. as you can see, people are holding large pride flags with religious symbols as well. standing behind him during his rant.

>> it's 606. and it soon could be illegal for your boss to call you when you're off the clock. a bill just introduced by san francisco assemblymember matt haney would give employees a right to disconnect. disconnect from emails, texts calls or anything after you leave the office and your hours are done. the bill does, however, make exceptions and that's for emergencies or to discuss scheduling certain companies like those with unusual hours or on call employees might also be exempt under this bill, which now heads to the assembly appropriations committee after passing the assembly labor committee. >> state lawmakers are also trying to block a new fee that we might see on our electricity bills next year pg e customers will start to see a $24 charge every month in return for that increase. regulators want to reduce electricity rates by 5 to $0.7 per kilowatt hour. the california public utilities commission is expected to approve this fee next month. and if it is approved, it would take effect late next

year. >> time now 607, and pandas are coming to san francisco and i don't mean panda. the giants player known not a public sandoval were talking the real breed making that announcement last night while she's on this week, long trip to china. kron four's michael thomas is live at the san francisco zoo which will be their new home. hi, michael. >> hey, good morning, everyone. an exciting day for san francisco. in fact, california, because there's no pandas in california right now. and the last time that san francisco actually housed pandas was back in the 80's. and it was really only for a few take a look. we've got video up on your screen so i can break it all down this conversation started back in november during the apec summit. that's when san francisco mayor london breed asked the chinese president xi jingping if the zoo could get some pandas. and at that time it was still up in the air. but during this tour of china that she's on right now, she did sign memorandum with the china wildlife conservation association. officials in

beijing making that dream a reality for san francisco. take a listen. >> we have been working closely with our local. >> chinese and asian community in san francisco to advocate for pandas for nearly a year. and it's an honor that our city has been chosen for the first time to be a long-term host, 2 giant pandas. >> and exciting data. as of right now, no official timeline has been given, but the san francisco standard reports that the san francisco zoo ceo says they're already working to renovate an existing space for the pandas to get here. and they're thinking some time by 2025. now the renovations could cost up to 4 million dollars. according to that report and 20 million for a new exhibit which they do plan to fund raise for. and as i mentioned earlier, the last time san francisco house pandas was back in 1984. 85, which was only for a few months. and it was during a global tour. so

this or 400 hours of community service and has to complete a driving course a family of 4 from livermore, including a baby and a 12 year-old were killed in a fiery crash in men teco. 3 other children in the minivan were saved, but they had major injuries. you can see people here rushing over, trying to help those victims. no word yet alcohol or drugs were a factor in that crash continue following the story. governor gavin newsom is giving 200 million dollars to help clear encampments and proride resources to californians experiencing homelessness. the city of oakland county and san mateo county are getting some of that money. a new 24 acre high school campus is set to welcome its first class of students in august. the current freshman of the new emerald high class is housed on the dublin high campus. they will transfer to the new campus next school year. >> time now 6.14. and we want to check out the weather. we finally made it to friday and the weekend looks like it's going to be a good it does.

yeah. >> solid, dry and sunny all weekend long. john, good morning. yeah, it's nice to have a dry weekend. unlike the past few weekends which were just like clockwork. kind of getting cooler and wetter this time around. we do have a little bit of a cool down, though. temperatures fall into the 70's today at the warmest looking outside at the embarcadero. can't see much but it is foggy year this morning. so as you do see the sunrise, you're going to see some pretty gray skies here in a little bit. our long range forecast is showing a generally cooler pattern over the next 7 days. you can see some of that cloud cover spitting up to the west. a sign of relatively unsettled weather across the region. that's going to keep temperatures generally just down into the 70's and 60's a lot more by the tail end of the weekend. we'll have a big heat pump and then it's down into the 60's into next week. so you get this idea here. it's not going to be just a warmer forecast ahead from here on out 50's to 60's for your highs in san francisco and along the coastline and then 60's to 70's elsewhere. nobody's getting up to 7 or to

bay still under 30. 85 to apart. checking on 6, 80 look at that. received the slowing off the pleasanton. take about 23 minutes to make it from dublin. now to fremont. arias is back to you. thanks a lot. reyna. it is 6.16, and san francisco is sticking to its word and suing. >> the city of oakland for allowing the port to try to change the name to the airport, to change the name of the oakland airport. but san francisco in there somewhere last week, leaders voted unanimously to move forward with the renaming of the oakland airport. they want to call it san francisco bay, oakland international airport. the board said all the final vote on this naming decision next month. san francisco officials say that this proposed name change would be a false designation of origin. city attorney david chiu says filing the lawsuit is in the public's best interest. we hope to have. >> a reasonable collaborative conversation on alternative names that would work for both

airports but their refusal to engage has left us with no choice. litigation is always a last resort. but unfortunately, at this point we have to bring this lawsuit. oakland's proposed name is going to create immense confusion and chaos for travelers, particularly those who do not speak english. we're very concerned about travelers are going to miss flights have mishaps, experienced economic loss. we're worried that this is going to damage the reputation of the travel industry in our bay area region. >> and i know we went out to the airport. people are like that would be confusing. well, here's what oakland has to say about it that they trust. travelers will understand a major metropolitan area can have more than one airport with the same name. the port's proposed. is what they say. renaming does not infringe upon sfo is mark sfo cannot lay claim to the geography in v they can't. you know san francisco, they're saying you can't have that. let alone

have exclusive rights to the san francisco bay. they're battling over all right. well, a lawsuit against bart by disability rights advocates is now being settled. >> the suit was filed back in 2017 and it alleged that bart systematically failed to ensure full and equal access to its stations and services, thereby violating the americans with disabilities act or the ada. now, as part of the settlement, bart has agreed now to renovate its elevators and escalators and must dispatch a repair person. within one hour after either of those 2 things break down at the station. well, it 18 lane lap pool. a family pool with the beach entry and children splash area. those are just some of the changes coming to walnut creek community and swim center at heather farm park. the city council approved the 77 million dollar revamp of this week. the new facility will combine and aquatic park and community center. that will also function as an emergency space for the city

design. work will likely begin in september of next year. and it's expected to take about 2 years to build the existing swim center will stay open throughout that entire construction process. >> it's 6.19, and tonight, eastbound highway 12 in santa rosa is going to have full and partial closures that you probably need to know about, especially if you're traveling in that area. caltrans is going to be doing some repaving work that starts tonight at 8 and it will end monday morning at 05:00am. so we've made a map to show you the area that you're going want to avoid and the alternate partial and full closures that are going to be happening between avenue and south e street exits. the closures will be divided into day and night shifts, hoping to make the world go faster. at night. the eastbound freeway between dot and south e street will be fully closed. and during the day one eastbound lane is going to be open and one lane will be closed. they're advising drivers to take alternate routes and expect traffic delays happening tomorrow. the

city of san francisco did cancel the annual for 20 event and hippie hill. but that doesn't mean people are going show up anyway and inhale thousands usually had to robin williams meadow and near hippie hill and celebrate all things pot on the unofficial pot holiday of 4.20, april 20 s so they might show up tomorrow. anyway, we'll have to see the church of ambrosia along with the haight ashbury merchants association plans to bring in supplies to help keep the paths around. hippie hill clear the church is still asking people find a different way to celebrate because they're afraid of too many people show up. it could really strain resources. >> everybody's really concerned that this could get out of control. so we just want keep it as mild as possible. people are going to come. it's going to be a beautiful day. it will be a great day to be out there. but the less people, the less problem, i worry about safety for the people who are attending. but ice on them

6.24, take a look at this video. 13 people were arrested after santa clara county. deputies say they rounded up $150,000 in stolen merchandise. >> in san jose, deputies say earlier this month they executed search warrants at 2 homes and found stolen items. from home depot target kohl's lows may see sunglass hut and a whole host of them. the recovered merchandise will return be returned to the businesses where they were taken. well in the south bay, san jose police have arrested 2 men and a woman connected to the kidnapping and torture of

a man was back in february that police say a man was held against his will and assaulted multiple times at a house on million court. it's not far from the reid-hillview county airport. they say the man was released after about a day later or so and checked himself into a hospital. officers say that's how they learned that 3 people responsible for that assault during the arrest. police say they found illegal gambling machines and marijuana for sale at the suspect's home. >> time now is 6.25. and supporters of a push to amend prop. 47 submitted more than 900,000 signatures to get it on the ballot in november. in 2017 voters passed prop 47 to reclassify some nonviolent crimes like theft as misdemeanors after punishment for those crimes was reduced. california saw a spike in retail theft, the california for safer communities. coalition has brought forward the homeless drug addiction and theft reach reduction act. it's designated to create a

deterrent for repeat offenders and it redirects attics towards services to help them. it's 6.26, and we've seen gas prices jumped $0.50 in one month. slight relief is in sight for bay area drivers. so let's take a peek at what that means. penny by penny, i guess gas prices across the bay of gone down five-hole pennies in most areas this week. so from top to bottom, top price right now is on average napa averaging 5.77. that is way too close to 6 bucks. wow. san mateo county averaging 5.71, same with san francisco. and then you can go down. nicolette. i'm pretty much sure a penny or 2 until you get to santa clara county, which is looking at 5.56. that's the best we can do right now. my gosh, 6.27, and coming up on the kron 4 morning news, san francisco city officials are thinking about new safety precautions in the west portal area to protect pedestri

>> fired a gun. and that, of course, made him rethink. what he was doing is why police say it's never worth it. kron four's dan thorn has the story from hayward. >> barefoot and running mad francis jones goes face-to-face with 2 men trying to steal his pick jones as it to 30 in the morning last week he was barely awake when his instincts kicked in. >> you can stand inside your house and be a victim and i wasn't going to let that happen. jones's home security camera alerted him and his wife of the crime in progress. jones as he caught one of the would-be thieves taking around after breaking into his dodge pickup. i reached around his neck right here, grabbed him. and since coming to a head lock in and yank him out of the >> i'm in the video. you can see the struggle. is jones yells out to call police. then

>> a gunshot inspired when the guy shot at me. i kind of got we woke about what really was going on and i let the guy go and i jumped for cover after >> troublemakers then took off in a white sedan. jones says for more than 20 years, his neighborhood along carol avenue has been pretty quiet and he hopes it could stay that way. police discourage people from confronting criminals because of safety. but jones says he had enough. i didn't get shot. i didn't get hurt. they didn't steal my truck. >> so hopefully it sends a message that, you know, don't go so to another street and not come around here again. >> heyward police say they found that getaway car abandoned and it was stolen and their investigation into this attempted auto theft is ongoing in hayward, dan thorn kron, 4 news. >> well, the driver who hit and killed a 4 year-old girl in san francisco last august will not be spending any time behind bars. officials say the crash happened as the girl was walking with her family near oracle park. the driver, a 71

year-old woman, was charged with vehicular manslaughter for hitting them in that crosswalk. on 4th street. her father survived after being critically injured. but the child did not. and now months later, that driver took a plea deal and is now going to be serving 400 hours of community service and has to complete a driving course. san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins released this statement in the wake of that announcement. and it reads, quote, in line with the family's wishes and with their support, we did reach a negotiated disposition rather than going to trial, although nothing that we can we do can bring their beloved daughter and granddaughter back. i hope that this settlement brings them some solace as they work to heal and rebuild their lives in the wake of the terrible tragedy last summer. >> time now sfmta is proposing new safety improvements to west portal avenue. this a month after the tragic car crash that killed a family of 4 waiting at a bus stop there.

the project is going to include more dedicated and protected space for pedestrians. there are also plans to remove car traffic from the train tracks. the sfmta director says the goal is to simplify the high traffic lanes along you alloa street by restricting cars from driving through the intersection. >> prioritizes people. i'm going to shop in the west portal commercial district and support significant pedestrian by eliminating all of the left. for about 40% are traffic a result of drivers making left turns and not be a ratings. >> the agency is going to collect feedback on the improvements before they make the changes this summer. >> it's 6.35 and we're learning the 4 people killed. >> in a crash in san king county are from the east bay

and the victims from livermore included man, a woman, a 12 year-old boy and a 4 year-old baby. chp says the driver of the van carrying 7 people, including the victims, lost control, hit an overpass overturned and then as you can see on the right-hand side of your screen, it was fully engulfed in flames by the time people gathered there frantically trying to a rescue. the family, 3 other children were rescued from that van and they went to the hospital with major injuries. look at all the people involved to trying to help the people in his van, which is on its side. you can see everybody running to help section tragedy that 4 people ended up dying in that fiery crash. >> we just knew we had to do something and to help. it was a reaction. it was an almost think to think what i was . going to do, i just reacted. >> joseph in jena roseman were driving by when they saw the accident and also sprung into

action. everybody was trying to push the car back onto its wheels. team. >> u.s. and i don't know a big group may be about 2015 of us. we all helped push the car back up and then. we just did what we what we we could do. trapped inside were 3 adults and 4 children. i looked down and i have to be the closest one to the to what i could see was a baby's arm. >> so i just i got down on my on my knees there and and and was trying to be like. >> trying to be gentle cause. you know it to great if you come right out and grabbed the baby and kind of move to moved away from accident scene and started cpr. >> his wife, gina, then stepped in as joseph ran back to help. some more just grabbed the baby from that point and ran further away closer to the truck. but further away from the fire >> leave the baby down and went ahead started chest compressions there. meanwhile, christian and monica work to get the other kids out from the minivan. >> monica recalls one of the girls after she was pulled
