>> from the bay area's local news station. we now with breaking news. >> breaking news at 6 alameda county district attorney pamela price is hosting a press supposed to happen any minute now to discuss. the recently concluded reexamination into the death of mario gonzalez. thanks so much for joining us tonight on kron. 4 news at 6. i'm vicki liviakis and i'm grant lotus. it has been almost 3 years now since gonzalez died in police custody. >> it was 4/19/2021 neighbors near a park in alameda called police reporting a person. it officers showed up and eventually took. 26 year-old mario gonzalez to the ground while trying to cuff him. he

lost his breath with officers, pinned him and later died at the hospital. the alameda county coroner's office ruled the death a homicide, an independent autopsy determined gonzales died from as 11 million dollar federal civil rights lawsuit was filed against the city of alameda in this case and the 3 officers involved in gonzales is death. the money will be awarded to gonzales is 7 year-old son. so the press conference was scheduled to start at 6 o'clock. it's obviously warning late. we'll bring it to you, though. >> live once it does begin. >> in other news, person is dead after their car went off a cliff. this is a gray whale cove state beach on tara, south pacific and north of most beach, it happened off highway one south of devil's slide today. fire crews say the car went down about 200 feet. a chp chopper lowered a rescuer on to the rocks where the car had landed. but the person inside was dead. we're looking we're working to learn

exactly what caused the crash in the first place. traffic in the area has since been cleared. >> tonight, we're learning that the 4 people, including a little baby who were killed in a fiery crash were from livermore, the crash happened over the weekend highway one, 20 >> you see the names here. authorities have identified them as bona fides co and you as well as lily on a day could adamant those a 12 year-old jorge guerrero and 4 months old. david guerrero. >> and we're going to the video now to show there were people that were rushing to help these victims chp. there they are. chp says that the driver of the minivan carrying 7 people, including the victims, just lost control, hit an overpass overturned and caught fire. chp says that 3 other children were rescued from that burning van. they were all taken to the hospital with major injuries. officers say that they were between the ages of 6.15. no word on their

conditions tonight. not clear if alcohol or drugs were factors in this crash. >> 3 people, including a 16 year-old were arrested after police say they stole more than $12,000 worth of electronics in san jose. take a look. happened around 8 o'clock monday night at valley fair mall. quite a few things there. police say the suspect still from several different stores in the mall. officers say they found the suspects with more than $1000 in stolen items on them. and another $12,000 or so in stolen merchandise in their car. take a look. 13 people were arrested after santa clara county deputies rounded up $150,000 in stolen merchandise in san jose. deputies say earlier this month they executed search warrants at 2 homes and found about $110,000 worth of stolen items from home depot at about $40,000 of stolen items from kohl's, lowe's, macy's and sunglass

hut. the suspects were also arrested at the hopes. >> in the east bay, 80 light fixtures left damage throughout a dublin neighborhood. police say that this happened and the sorento at dublin ranch community at the end of last month. officers say that not only with a light severely damaged, but the suspects also vandalized the bridge on grafton street with yellow and blue spray paint anybody with information about this is being asked to call dublin police. city of san francisco taking the city of oakland to court over the decision to change the name of oakland international airport. they threaten to do so. the port of oakland recently decided to officially changed the name san francisco bay oakland international airport as kron four's. dan kerman reports tonight a ruling. >> could revolve around whether the change clarifies or confuses travelers. what's in a name? but it comes to san francisco's airport. the city says so much that it's suing

the city of oakland to protect it. we're asking the court. >> to tell oakland to stop using its new name last week. oakland port commissioners voted to rename oakland international airport, san francisco bay, oakland international airport. this is about clarifying to travelers that oakland is an efficient instinctive. >> choice to fly into the san francisco bay. oakland's proposed name is going to create immense confusion and chaos for travelers. >> particularly those who do not speak english. san francisco season differently and is filed a federal lawsuit maintaining oakland airport's name change violates its trademark and is designed to confuse travelers and safe and business from sfo. we're very concerned about travelers are going to miss flights mishaps, experienced economic loss. we're worried that this is going to damage the reputation of the travel industry in our bay area region. >> are airports propose renaming does not infringe

upon sfo is mark and we will vigorously defend our right to claim are spot on the san francisco bay. we ask passengers arriving at oakland international about the name change and all agreed. adding san francisco to the name is confusing. >> there's also the san francisco airport. and just able just be confusing to combining it could. then you have to clarify, you have to go wait. san francisco need to be like oakland, san francisco. so i think it's a better just to keep it kind of clean gears to just stay. oakland airport, san francisco airport to complicate matters. the lawsuit also indicates at least one airline is already started using the new airport name. >> to make online flight reservations. well, the port of oakland is already approved. the name change final approval will not come until the may 9th meeting. that means until that time. this will remain oakland international airport. >> dan kerman kron, 4 news.

>> marks 118 years since the 19, 0, 6 devastating earthquake and fire in san francisco. more than 3,000 people were killed and more than 200,000 people were left without hopes. fast forward to this morning. san francisco city officials remembering the event with the annual wreath laying ceremony at lot as fountain in union square. there was a moment of silence at 5.11 this morning. the same time the quake in fires began followed by fire truck sirens for about 30 seconds. it has been obviously more than a century now since then and lots of lessons have been learned when it comes to how you actually prepare for a big quake. kron rob nesbitt joins us now with more on how construction is changing rob. >> vicki, before 19, 0, 6, building codes were lax because of profits. for

instance, wood was used more often to save money. that does not happen today, but there's still concerns for safety. the skyline of san francisco has changed in the last 118 years. >> since the 19, 0, 6, earthquake leveled the city and cause massive fires. building codes have been updated. but when dave was good from the coalition for san francisco neighborhoods, research data on 180 of the city's tallest buildings. he found concerns there are 43 tall buildings. >> with the same kind of foundation that the millennium tower had before started leaning had to be the number one priority in cases like this is safety. i spoke with the president of the structural engineers association, california, and legally ammo. she says that modern building codes to a good job of saving lives in the event of an earthquake. >> but that there's more room for improvement when it comes to making sure buildings are usable after shaking 30 to 40% of our modern code confirming buildings will be unfit for occupancy following a major earthquake.

>> so what that means is it's going to take months or even years to repair it so that you can go back into that particular building. they were also lessons learned during the 6.9 magnitude earthquake that struck in 1989 when entire homes were moved off. their foundations retrofitting is now recommended to prevent that. we want to make sure there's adequate connectivity and bolting there. and there is a program collect brace and bolts that is available to homeowners to help assist them in making sure that their their home is safe in in the major seismic events. the california earthquake authority has found that many homeowners today don't have earthquake insurance and spokesperson ben dc explain why that often happens. i think it's a place where people come up when they're looking at their budget to we're dealing with the inflation way it es. i think it is a place where people think maybe i can get away with >> skimping here, he says that's not a good idea. given the fact that another large earthquake is expected along california's fault line, it's going to happen. we just don't know exactly one. dc says that when homeowners retrofit their

degrees above normal. there. it's 79 degrees today. here's where we are right now. we've obviously cooled it down a little bit. but still, you know, antioch right now sitting at 76 while san francisco has rolled back to about 57 getting a little breezy out there, too. you might feel that as you're walking around out about 20 miles per hour at sfo. so that's going to be part of our forecast tomorrow and also into saturday, a little bit of wind. now there's this. we've got some clouds rolling in tonight. you can see it half moon bay already starting to show up. we have the potential for a little coastal drizzle tonight. that will be new. we haven't had that in a bit. temperatures, however, will be mild. you can see inland valleys in those mid 40's others up to about 52 degrees as we head more towards the bay. but a pretty nice night on tap on the back in a little bit. we'll talk about what tomorrow holds going to be tiny bit cooler. back to you. our cuyler. >> also still to come, the driver who pleaded guilty to hitting and killing a little girl outside the giants. ballpark in san francisco will not face any jail time. next up, we'll hear from her

involuntary manslaughter. mister gonzalez died on april. 2021. i apologize for the day. we believe. that was april 12. what the public should know is that i'm walled-off from the case. i will not be participating and have not participated in the ultimate decision about the case. and i'm very proud that my public accountability unit, created in january of 20 23 has been able to independently assess the evidence and come to a decision about this case. the public accountability unit has a lot of work. unfortunately. and i will say this is not a great day for the city of alameda for the county of alameda. or for the family mister gonzales. nonetheless, it is important as public officials that we do have a public accountability unit that we do hold people accountable when there is harm and that we don't have a

double standard. and so we're proceeding on that. ms morris has indicated, because this case is now found and it is pending before the court. we will not have any further comment from the alameda county district attorney's office. and we look forward having the matter to the kid. thank you that to have quick. i'm open for questions. >> the former district attorney decided press charges in this case. can you tell us why? >> yeah, i can't comment on i can't comment on that. the matter is pending before the court. and so the details of how the pa you came to this decision, particularly my predecessor i don't think it will be relevant, but it be decided.

>> you say you are walled off from the with decision you may was the importance of that. >> it was a decision that i made. it's technical matter and i'm not able to speak and on at this time. >> all of district attorney's usually have. make decisions like this regularly. so a lot why you decided to off from district attorneys. >> some decisions fortunate play. we don't make all the decisions in cases. and so there are cases in times many cases, most cases in this county. i don't make decisions about. so it's a matter of charging and what the team, how the team chooses to proceed. and i respect their process. so that's what happened. that's what i can that there was nothing too. i'm all it.

cases. you know, that is what people want. that does. it is has different interpretations. but if people do believe that police officers or law enforcement can be held accountable, then witnesses won't cooperate. we can't do our job without witnesses. we won't be able to administer justice if the community doesn't trust that the system is going to work for everyone on an equal basis. so that's why it's really important. trying to rebuild trust in a system that has not always been fair to folks, particularly in alameda county. that's part of our mandate. officers duty. not that i'm aware of. no. take when you clarify just mentioned, that the 19. that i

believe that. well. there's a typo in here. okay. we have been listening to a press conference that's being held by alameda county district attorney. >> pamela the bottom line here is that 3 officers from the city of alameda have been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death mario gonzalez. >> yeah, a 26 was a handcuffed and officers were trying to take him down as the alameda county coroner's office ruled the death a homicide at the time, an independent autopsy determined he died from as and again, now 3 officers have been charged. so we'll keep you posted on developments there. monitor this press conference. anything of consequence comes out of it, we'll let you know. other news this evening of the 3 accused killers of kevin nishita paired in court today issued his wife, virginia. >> tells kron 4 that the plea hearing has been continued

until may 25th at the request of the attorney for mitchell said mitchell that along with the law. ron gilbert and hershel hale are accused of shooting and killing the cheetah in november of 2021. well, he was protecting a kron. 4 news crew in oakland, all 3 men face murder charges as well as charges of attempted robbery and assault with a deadly weapon. >> tuesday night's walnut creek city council meeting was interrupted by antisemitic hate once again, according to council member kevin wilk, the man you see here at the podium drove from sacramento to make his hateful comments against the jewish community. according to the jewish community relations council. this is the 3rd time this man has shown up in this public forum. but as wilkes said in a post on social media today, the community was prepared to denounce the hate. you can see people with, you know, pride

>> state lawmakers are trying to block a new fee that we might be seeing on our electric bills next year. customers of the state's biggest utility companies like pg and e are going to see a $24 charge every month in

return for the fee increase. regulators want to reduce electricity rates by 5 to $0.7 per kilowatt hour. the california public utilities commission is expected to approve that fee next month. and if they green-lighted it would take effect that late next year after california's fast food minimum wage was bumped up to 20 bucks an hour, not even a month ago. well, prices where already going up. that is according to a study done calla now, ski equity the biggest increase between april first and now is from wendy's. prices are up 8% at wendy's. chipotle up 7 and a half percent. starbucks up 7% taco bell that went up 3%. and burger king up 2%. mcdonald's they didn't exactly move at least not in this study. the wage increase from 16 to $20 per hour for fast food workers will reportedly cost each mcdonald's around $250,000.

only shocked many but really lead to some substantial changes on san francisco streets. a driver hit and killed little 4 year-old girl who was crossing the street with their parents. this is right outside the giants ballpark where the driver pleaded guilty. but she got a deal that won't include any jail time. >> kron four's theresa has the story. >> the crash scene, horrific first responders trying to say the 4 year-old girl's life, but sadly not possible. her father critically injured was rushed to the hospital and lived the driver of the mercedes was charged with vehicular manslaughter for killing the 4 year-old. now, months later, a plea deal. the driver, karen carr, tanya, in court this week write a letter expressing remorse in the letter shared with kron 4 news car, tanya said, quote, i've asked myself over and over. why couldn't it have been me not this young life and this young family. i know there is no way for me to change what has happened. bu
