on the kron 4 morning news. a homicide suspect shot and killed by police in oakland. plus, as protesters continue calling for an end to the war in gaza, one group is confronted with hate speech. and reports of yet another round of job cuts at google after the company laid off nearly 1000 workers earlier this year. >> from the area's local news station, you're watching the kron. 4 morning news at 7. >> we hope you're having a good thursday so far. i'm daria and i'm james and weather-wise. it's a fantastic thursday to start. we've got clear skies. sun is up. yeah, i think we're going to continue on that trend. i john, it looks like it. today is the last day of low 80's, but that's not to say the rest of the forecast will be warm.

but today is just really one of the warmest we're looking out there at the east bay hills with lots of sunshine already up above temperatures are going to warm really quickly today under all that sunshine that we're yet again seeing across the bay area, even more so than we were yesterday. temps right now, san jose, you're sitting at 56 degrees. same in brentwood. so this is about as cool as it's going to get today. some 40's in the north bay and a few spots on the bayshore like in san mateo at 48 degrees. temperatures rise quick here. we will be into the afternoon another day with low 80's inland and for some of us on the bay shore all the way up into the upper 70's. i'll break it all down for you as we go in your forecast rain. all right, john, thank you for part alert. there is a 20 minute delay on the san francisco line in the east bay direction. looks like that. a medical emergency on the line there. so they're working to clear that right now the fact of this in 20 minute delay on the s of line in the east bay direction on the bay bridge of a minor traffic collision at the toll plaza drive times fluctuated a little bit. still

staying around the lower 20 minutes traveling into the city, 70 min rhino accidents, hazards delays on the san mateo bridge. richmond center fell bridge about 12 minutes and the golden gate bridge. 37 of the tolls. 22 minute ride. are you guys back to you? thanks. reyna. let's begin with breaking news from overnight. the oakland police department now investigating a deadly shooting that involves an officer. that shooting happened just before 9.30, last night on 16th street. >> the police department says the sacramento police were in town in oakland investigating a homicide and they asked the oakland police to help them arrest a suspect then the police say that that suspect came out of a home with a gun and officers ended up shooting and killing that person. no officers were injured and the department says those officers have been placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation continues. >> will pro palestinian demonstrators were back in south san francisco after a man attacked them last week. video shows the man physically

and verbally assaulting members of a group called change. ash ash af kron four's. dan thorn has more. >> the man in that video was arrested by south san francisco police and charged with battery and hate speech. organizers for change ssf say facing that kind of vitriol was unfair and unacceptable because they're simply calling for peace and an end to the war in gaza. and they're rallies are not going to end until this war is over. >> all i people messages targeting pro-palestinian protesters last week in south san francisco races. a 57 year-old man was caught on camera bumping hurling insults and even spitting and i don't think being anti genocide. antiwar but apparently >> educated by our messaging. change ssf and see a 15 for

palestine rallied in the same spot where the incident happened wednesday evening for weeks. they've been demanding a cease-fire resolution in south city. >> out of fear of the return of any bad actors, organizers asked for children to be kept at my son does wish that he could out here with us. >> this is a very important cause along with others, even like called following last week's violence doxing. he's also been a concern for the group. >> so kron 4 was asked to not share the names of any ralliers. but the demonstrators are also not staying silent, waving palestinian flags and getting the attention of drivers along el camino. change. ssf says they will not be deterred from their mission by men like everywhere. there's always going to be bad actors, whatever whatever case you're advocating for. i think that this is a matter of human rights and >> i think if you're advocating against

preservation of human life, you take a good look at yourself. >> these demonstrations were y% not supposed to be a weekly thing, but after last week's attack, the group says they felt compelled to carry on and they're planning on having another rally next week at the civic campus here in south san francisco in south san francisco. dan thorn kron. 4 news. >> it's 704, and alameda county district attorney pamela price says that her office is working on filing charges against the protesters. >> who blocked 8.80 earlier this week on monday. in a statement kron 4, the da says her office is working with the chp. >> to process evidence and information. and she says, quote, while my office supports central right to protest is important that to do the public safety should never be compromised and exercising the first amendment right of free speech. and in san francisco district brooke jenkins is reaching out to anyone who was impacted by the pro-palestine protest on the

golden gate bridge which shut the golden gate bridge down for hours saying anybody was trapped on the bridge that day should contact the chp in moran. >> well, google has fired 28 of its employees who protested at the company's offices across the country tuesday. one of those protests happened outside the google office in sunnyvale. we were there and here's the video. demonstrators want the company to cut ties with israel. police arrested 5 of those demonstrators, including some google employees who refused to leave. a google spokesperson says that physically impeding other employees work and preventing access to facilities is a clear violation of company policies. meantime, speaking of google, a new report shows the company is planning more layoffs. a spokesperson for the mount view, company told reuters the layoffs are part of an effort to cut costs. no word on the number of employees that are set to be let go. but we know this is the latest round of layoffs because it was earlier this year that the company let

about 1000 employees go. >> it's 706. and happening today, janitors in san jose are going to rally for better pay and better working conditions. 25,000 janitors across california are planning to authorize a strike as their contracts are set to expire at the end of the month. here's video from a previous rally at happened in june of last year. the union for the janitor says that they're fighting to and abuse of workloads that they say have caused injuries to one 3rd of the workforce of janitors in the last year. and they also want better pay the rally starts at 11 o'clock this morning in front of the adobe headquarters on park avenue in saint. it's been one month since a family of 4 was tragically killed while they were waiting at a west portal bus stop to go to the zoo. and last night the san francisco police were out holding a traffic sting operation in that area to see if they could improve conditions and make drivers aware of how dangerous it can be for pedestrians. and

look at what happened just in 90 minutes the police gave out. 22 citations and 5 warnings. the assistant police chief says that since that deadly accident, the community has been very vocal about wanting to see changes and improving traffic safety in that area. and they say the police agree and they offer some tips to for pedestrians. >> let's say for the whole city has a pedestrian walking around. you just have to be really aware of your surroundings for a lot of reasons, you know, to prevent crime, but also in terms of traffic safety really making sure you're looking both ways a few times before you cross make eye contact with drivers, putting your hands up to just be seen and be safe. >> and actually there was one driver there and she was cited and she said, yeah, i mean, this intersection could definitely stand to have some improvements so that more people could see they need to slow down, maybe better markings and that sort of thing. so they're looking at. >> starting today, the pacifica pier is going to be closed for 2 days so that crews can inspect that structure and see if it's of

of a be fully reopened. sections of that pier damaged by large waves back in december. and we know that here was partially reopened february, but then engineers determined that half that here was unsafe for visitors. so they wanted to wait for all the storms to be done with so they can get out there and do that inspection work. so next 2 days, that's what they're going to do. >> 708, is the time. and the city of san francisco held ceremonies early this morning to remember when the big earthquake struck in 19 0 c 118 years ago. this is footage from that day. >> and that ravaged the city, earthquake and the resulting fires that swept through killed 3,000 people. 200,000 were left without a home. it was devastating and people were left with no way to communicate and get help and know where they were. so everybody gathered at one central point in san francisco, which has become famous for that lot of fountain crawford's. michael thomas is live in san francisco. you're watching as the city remembers what happened this morning.

>> hey, good morning, everyone. that's right. almost 120 years later, people in san francisco are still honoring and remembering those who lost their lives in the 19. 0, 6, earthquake in fires. and we were a lot of earlier this morning. but now we're here at the golden fire hydrant. you can see people already spray painted it this morning. and you see that wreath laying there marking that ceremony of 118 years. so people began honoring the anniversary. we've got video you can see at around 4.45 this morning at lot of stuff out near market street in downtown. it started with the lead during fleet wreath laying ceremony. excuse me and a moment of silence at around 5.11. that's when the quake struck then followed by fire truck sirens. and while mayor london breed is currently overseas in china, other officials did attend this morning and that included former mayor willie brown fire chief jeanine nicholson and police chief william scott and along with the master of ceremonies, bob scarlet. now this year's wreath-laying was

dedicated in the memory of senator dianne feinstein, san francisco flores and lot of fountain reef maker larry, who dissent. >> and just feet away from there. we should have video there as well. you can see there's a new plaque that talks about all the history of the big quake just right there near the fountain. and we actually spoke this morning with the san francisco emergency management director. >> mary ellen, who says it's really not a matter of if we'll see another quake, but it's a matter of when. >> i think what people need to know is that the things that we depend on a will not be available to us. plan for that to just think through that scenario and think about how you're going to prepare your family. >> the event ended this morning near dolores park. and with that fire hydrants spray painting and people who are san franciscans who either have loved ones that were here during those earthquakes or who passed away. they came and

>> 7.14, right now. and i do notice that the sun sets have been gorgeous. getting like pinky and stuff. plus good tool, hugh. we have maybe its pollution. i i was getting a little bit of haze out there yesterday, which kind of made for cool sunrise and sunset that what is haze pollution. nice way since september right into it. i'm just looking at that beautiful that's why cafferty haha. but yeah, you could see a little bit of the haze out there again today. that's the unfortunate side effect. >> those high-pressure ridges

creates the cap over the bay area. and that's where you get that layer of smog, that layer of haze that we do see, you got a little bit of the fog at the golden gate bridge, but not a ton of it this morning. overall, just a pretty bright start. there's the high pressure ridge creating that some hazy sunshine again today skies will be clear over that. he's and they were yesterday, though, low pressure actually dives into next week. this is going to clean air up a little bit and also going to keep us from getting in the warmer than we are today. so today is actually the warmest day of the remainder of the forecast. after today. we kind of back up the heat just a little bit. still very comfortable. just not as that warm as the 80's tomorrow. we will see a few clouds during the morning clearing skies during the afternoon and saturday, much the same. a little bit of fog here and there, especially at the coastline. and that's going to keep temperatures at the coast down into the 60's. where is the rest of us today will be in the 70's to low 80's burlingame at 73 degrees. temperatures further south in the bay area. solid mid to

upper 70's. well, the south bay looking at some low 80's yet again. san jose. you are going to be our warmest spot on the map at 82 70's for the east bay. until you get up to danville, the concord, where you actually get up to 80 degrees yet again. oakland up to richmond at 74, some 80's as well for solano county this afternoon. today. the last one we're seeing the 80's in the forecast after today. we see temperatures gradually backing off that heat. mid 70's for much of the weekend and by the middle of next week, only the upper 60's, right? all right, john, thank you for in mind. if you're taken bar, we have a barn alert. >> 20 minute delay on the san francisco line. looks like it's in all directions. now because of an earlier medical emergency they had. so they're trying to clear that off of the track right now in all directions. san francisco line add an extra 20 minutes on to your commute depending on where you're going on the bay bridge. you do have a minor traffic collision. that's right. my the toll plaza drive times have still been around 20 to 23 minutes and we're going to get that off of the

launched their new pet smart new treats rewards loyalty program live from the nasdaq market site. i'm jane king back to area. okay, i don't have a tattoo, but it sounds like the pen is the way to go. >> to say, okay. thank you, james. and oakland family wants to raise awareness about the signs of faulty batteries. yeah, this comes after a lithium battery. they had caught fire. now they're left without a home with proper. sara stinson to explain what happened. >> suzy fetter and clark boyd described the traumatic moment when a fire started at their oakland home sunday afternoon. you're screaming for your partner about all there inside fire is says you wouldn't believe that would knew. the couple says loud pops and smoke started coming from their garage. so boyd went to check it out. >> that's when like the rest of black smoke came. and boyd says he quickly saw it was his lithium battery that caught fire setter quickly called 9-1-1. but she says she was put on hold over 6 minutes.

>> and i ended having to hang it so i could. >> call other people and other neighbors were around and there are hold with 9, 1, as well that are then grabbed their 18 month-old baby and dog. her husband stayed behind to fight the fire. and got the garden hose from the backyard trying put the fire out. eventually firefighters arrived and put out the flames, a car inside the garage and the building. >> got heavily damaged. thankfully, no one got hurt, but the family and their 2 neighbors now without a home. it's just woman and it's even hard process we need to do at this time. boyd says he had a lot of flammable things in the garage. so this could have been a lot worse. we're all counting their blessings of this reflecting on the chaos of sunday. boyd wants to warn others about faulty lithium batteries. you have gotten don't use that at all. you know, returning returning if

they have a problem that, you know best to get your money back, if you do. >> take that loss taking a loss on the little battered $100 battery. save you a going something possibly even somebody getting hurt? >> and the family says they they bought the battery from a company called and before it caught fire, they did notice some issues with the battery and they tried contacting the company about it. they say that customer service was not helpful, but that's another clue. maybe if your battery is having some issues with it, you might want to be careful. >> 7.22 is the time in the south bay over the last 20 years, health officials say that sexually transmitted infections have been on the rise, especially among teenagers in santa clara county. they're hoping to reverse that trend by raising awareness through viral videos created by teens themselves. >> guy on average home.

>> total of 104 students submitted entries to the santa clara county health department for its annual sti viral video contest. the goal is to raise awareness about st eyes and their treatments. >> we saw a lot of the psa is from like previous years and a lot of them are kind of are serious. and we thought that if we did something with light hearted that it would be more impactful. >> having teen speak to other teens through videos is nothing new. the santa clara county health departments actually been sponsoring this sgi viral video contest since 2014 and with st eyes on the rise for the past 20 years, it's more important than ever to get the message out. >> it's 7.22. and coming up on the kron 4 morning news, an audit of the san jose police department finds a number of complaints against officers will take a closer look at what people had to say.

>> we're back 7.25. is the time and someone vandalized. the historic street lamps lining lake merritt oakland. you can see here city officials say about 40 kerr boxes were broken into and the light poles are down from a combination of fallen trees and vandalism. city workers are having to replace some of the stolen wires and install temporary light poles while permanent replacements are fabricated. we talked to some of the residents in the area and they say it's makes them think twice about coming out at night. >> with all the life is like safe like going to feel safe. got this makes like.

>> 6.29 right now. and you don't need a jacket today. no, yeah. looks a little hazy here in this shot. but the the sun is out there. promise. good morning, a little hazy for sure. but the sunshine is going to win out today. more and more. and you're already seeing that happening at the earlier. check with show in half moon bay under the clouds. it's getting brighter. now, though, as that fog burns off at the coast, we'll still see haze into the afternoon. but over that is a lot of sunshine that's going to warm us up really quickly. we're already in the mid 50's for a lot of the bay like in hayward, redwood city, san jose in brentwood, a few 40's up north in the bay area later on today, temps will rise quick and we're right back to

16th street with the department saying that the sacramento police were actually in oakland investigating a homicide when they asked opd to help them out in arresting the suspect. opd says that suspect came from. came out from the home with a gun, an officer shot and killed that person. none of the police were hurt. but the department says the officers involved have now been placed on paid administrative leave as that investigation is ongoing. >> there's a warning about a game that's trending on social media and it could be very dangerous here in the bay area. we it's. >> recently been on the rise, police concerned. in fact, a citizen called police say they saw this teenager running through a neighborhood. >> with a gun, but it wasn't a real gun. still, proffers theresa stasi reports about how dangerous this can be. yeah, just call that the assassin challenge. >> kron 4 news obtained the snapshots from a deputy's body worn camera of a replica gun recovered by marin county sheriffs on tuesday. a

spokesperson says the deputies pulled over the team with friends after an uber driver have reported seeing what he thought was a teen running through a neighborhood holding a real weapon, according to their was something that they knew could be riskier. people could be concerned about. >> so they're trying to be smart about but running through residential neighborhoods and hiding behind is not really smart way to go about doing that. >> that's marin county deputy adam schumer horn. he says the high school student told deputies recently purchased the fagan online to participate in the senior has since game. we're seniors teams and eliminate each other by tagging competitors with water, guns. >> although kids want to have fun that they want to do silly do things like that that many of us have that senior of her own this is something that definitely has some serious ramifications. >> last month after a teen was cited on a marine bike path with another fagan principles

that marin county high school sent out emails to parents warning them about the game. and consequences of getting caught. redwood high school doctor payne sent this out, quote, school consequences for participation in this game may include loss of privileges such as prom graduation ceremonies, athletics and other activities, end quote, martin county sheriff's office put on their social media site. the circumstances surrounding the teen and the realistic looking gun has a message for all. >> my hope is that parents will see this and have conversations with their be cognizant about the types items that they're leaving the house with for the purchasing in marin county, theresa kron. 4 news. >> well, several east bay school district are on high alert wednesday after receiving a bomb threat. that was about 6 o'clock yesterday morning that the threat was emailed to the antioch unified school district along with brentwood union liberty union, mount diablo unified and pittsburg, unified school districts. it claimed that a

bomb would go off unless russian prisoners were released from us jails. ultimately the threat was deemed not credible, but antioch unified did have increased security on campus throughout the day just as a precaution. we did speak to parents who decided to pick their kids up early about how they were feeling. >> he didn't like it actually real, not. >> were used gear. him. i want. a little scared. >> you know, the assistant superintendent with the liberty union high school district says that this threat was actually sent to schools all across california, but no specific school was identified. >> meantime, alameda police are investigating a swatting incident and to end civil junior and senior high. it happened around one of the afternoon yesterday. the policdepartment got a call and somebody said there was a hostage situation at the school. there was not. but police, of course, had to respond, which they did. they went to the campus. they didn't find anything

suspicious. the day. you know, caution you against doing that creates a lot of trouble and some trouble was created here in the north petaluma police investigating graffiti at kenilworth junior high. the graffiti threatened a school shooting saying what happened today? the department has investigated there's no known credible threat to the school or the staff and now they're working to try to solve and get to the bottom of that graffiti. >> will 3 people now facing charges in connection with the shooting deaths of 2 teenagers up in napa. 22 year-old john nicholson, junior and 2 teenage girls have been arrested for that shooting saturday night. investigators say nicholson has pleaded not guilty to several charges, including murder. they say the 2 girls arrested for from santa rosa were in the car with him during the shooting and they could face charges as accomplices. in the south bay. 4 people now charged with murder after an 18 month-old baby overdosed in san jose. and among those 4 people, the baby's parents, derrick rail

and kelly richardson. they're actually the first in santa clara county's history to be charged with murdering their own child with drugs. this is video of their appearance back in november. investigators say the parents waited more than 12 hours before they called 9-1-1. to report that their daughter had died. they say the 2 additional people being charged provided a steady supply of opioids. and there's evidence they say that shows all 4 defendants were using drugs in the same room as the baby. >> it's 7, 36 and in the south bay, there's a new audit of the san jose police department just out and shows more than 360 complaints against officers in 2023. about 250 of those complaints involved police misconduct. one complaint said that an officer used excessive force during an arrest. and when asked by the suspect why he was being detained, the officer replied, quote, we just decided to stop a black man for no reason. okay. a review of that incident found that the

officers use of force was within police policy. but that additional training was needed to avoid bias based policing. and there were 2 other cases where citizens complained during a traffic stop that an officer asked this question out of the blue. are there any dead babies in the car? upon investigation? one officer said that that's an example of what they call shock. talk, which is meant to catch a listener off guard, causing a greater likelihood that that listener is going to speak. the truth? well, the audit recommends the department should strongly discourage tactics like that. >> in the east bay, a man now charged with vehicular manslaughter in connection with a hit and run crash that killed a pedestrian in oakland back in 2022. so the alameda county district attorney's office says that amelia martinez, roe was walking on international boulevard when she was struck by a car. prosecutors say they believe that jose perez was behind the wheel of that stolen car when he struck the woman didn't call for help. perez now said
