sheriff's detectives say someone found 27 year-old amory may sweeney's body in an orchard. authorities say sweeney was hit and killed by a car. last week. police arrested ricky lasher and connection to sweeney's death and have charged him with murder. lasher made his first court appearance monday. he's being held in jail on a 1 million dollars bail. investigators have not released a motive behind the killing. >> the city of san jose has a new police watchdog. 80 aubrey is the city's new independent police auditor. the city council made the decision after a report showed complaints against police hadn't decreased in 4 years. aubrey was the head of office of professional accountability for the richmond police department before heading down to san jose. he is now san jose's 7th auditor and takes over may 6th. the announcement comes as the san jose police department receives its yearly audit. this annual report shows room for improvement.

some 367 complaints were made against officers nearly 250 of those involved police misconduct. 36 were complaints about officers using force in one complaint an officer was accused of using excessive force during an arrest when asked by the suspect why he was being detained. the officer replied, quote, we just decided to stop a black man for no reason. okay. end quote. a review of that incident found. excuse me the officers use of force was within police department policy. but that additional training was needed to avoid biased. in 2 other cases, citizens complained that during a traffic stop an officer asked, quote, are there any dead babies in the car? upon further investigation? there? and officers said this was an example of, quote, shock talk net to catch someone off guard

and thereby cause a greater likelihood of that person speaking the truth. the audit recommends the department should strongly discourage such tactics? >> chp continues to fight retail crime across california and new numbers show this year alone there retail crime task force recovered a record number of stolen goods and arrested hundreds of suspects. take a look here since the beginning of 2024. officials have made 474 arrests and recovered more than 160,000 stolen goods at a total value of more than 4 million dollars. and a total of 185 investigations. the organized retail crime task force began back in 2019 since then, chp has arrested more than 2500 suspects. we're covering more than 42 million dollars worth of stolen goods. chp has also ramped up efforts right here in the bay area and february. governor newsom deployed units

to oakland and greater alameda county to help fight violent crime and retail crime. most recently, chp recovered 400 stolen cars and oakland and arrested 200 people last week. members of the public and retailers can also report retail crime tips directly through the chp is website. >> a former hgtv actor in los gatos resident is facing 4 years in prison and he's been ordered to pay back 10 million dollars after he was caught laundering money on real estate here in the bay area. santa clara county. prosecutors say charles todd hill, who starred in the show flip it to win it created a ponzi scheme by taking people's money to buy homes and then using it to live lavishly. he'll show concept was that he would fix-up rundown houses and then sell them for profit give people invested money back and more. according to prosecutors, though, he instead spent millions of dollars on remodels and pocketed

millions. 11 people fell victim to fraud because of the scam. the victim say they are still suffering financial damage. >> the san francisco sheriff's office says the lockdown at one of its jails ends today. it comes as 2 jails were locked down after number of inmate attacks on deputies and staff. they say the other jail in san bruno will reopen later this week after 9 members of that jail staff were assaulted by the inmates. san francisco mayor london breed is continuing her trip through china. she posted this picture to her social media from beijing today. she met with the u.s. ambassador to china, nicholas burns in her post. she says they discussed economic development and cultural exchange between san francisco and various cities throughout china. today is day 4 of her 8 day trip. all right. back here in the base. >> the mayor's missing out on some better weather chamber of commerce type stuff. as we look live here outside our

now as a ridge continues to dominate our weather variously as we head through the night tonight to see some of the high clouds continuing overhead. couple of patches of fog again by the coastline by tomorrow morning. i think the afternoon again, going to be a beautiful day around the bay area, just some passing high clouds and again, some warm temperatures, 70's 80's going to be common away from the coastline. and then as we get into friday, things change. you see fog begin develop along the coastline. maybe even some drizzle beginning to show up along the beaches as we head toward friday morning as well in the afternoon. more clouds gathering, then too. so tomorrow, another nice day, though, planning about 82 warm sunshine into san jose. 73. a beautiful day in oakland about 66 degrees in san francisco. thanks. alerts the santa clara county board of supervisors has voted in favor of supporting the effort to keep the regional medical center open. >> supervisor cindy chavez says closing the trauma center would be people would have to travel a lot further to get the help they need. supervisors are now calling on the state department of health services to they believe if

they can demonstrate the closing the trauma center would be a major public safety danger. then the state would be obligated to keep it open. >> the sfmta board of directors has voted to finalize the plans of installing speed cameras across the city. back in 2023, a state bill was passed allowing san francisco along with 5 other cities to implement a 5 year safety camera pilot. it enables the sfmta to install 33 speed cameras on streets with the history of speeding and severe or fatal crashes. now it's been exactly one week since oj simpson died. one of the big questions now being asked, does his death make it any more likely? >> that the families of ron goldman and nicole simpson will finally collect the millions of dollars owed to them. >> kron four's catherine heenan talk to a bay area civil trial attorney. she joins us live in the newsroom with more. catherine? yeah, well, there's been a nearly three-decade long fight to

collect the. >> roughly 33 million dollars awarded by a civil court jury in 1997. that jury found oj simpson liable for the deaths of his ex-wife nicole simpson and her friend ron goldman. if it doesn't fit. you must acquit. >> about a year after o j. simpson's 1995. acquittal on murder charges. he was back in court facing civil charges. only a small fraction of the 33 and a half million dollars. he was eventually ordered to pay out after that trial was reportedly ever delivered and attorney for the family of ron goldman says with interest, the amount is now 114 million. so to the families have a better chance now of collecting a bay area. civil trial attorney says it depends on how much of simpson's assets are successfully found or marshaled always what's actually going to be marshall.

sunshine tomorrow and high clouds again should be a beautiful, warm afternoon this weekend. yeah, it's going to be a little bit cooler but should remain mostly dry outside out the door. right now. it is 80 degrees in san jose. big contrast. 59 cool in half moon bay. 62 pacifica. 67 in san francisco. 75 though, in timber on. and 75 in napa right now. so really nice weather away from the immediate coastline. you get those warmer temperatures, but that sea breeze has been low right at the water's edge. overall, though, high pressure taking care of us. you kind of see that northerly component to the wind. and that has kept most of the fog away all the way down south of point conception toward los angeles. we did have a couple of patches of fog along the coastline early on today. but most that long gone now, but likely reform overnight tonight and tomorrow morning, lower forecast for you. well, here we go. a high pressure overhead to passing high clouds. we get to friday. we got a weak system that's going to come through over the weekend and then it looks like that help to cool us down a little bit more. but next week, how about this? a big change in the pattern late next week. there you go. chance of rain possibly rolling in by next thursday could see some showers lingering into friday, too.

temperatures around the bay or tomorrow should be nice again. how about 70 in the mission? 66 downtown san francisco. little cooler coast side with a couple of patches of fog. but even that will give way to some sunshine as we head toward the middle of the day, 70 degrees in san bruno tomorrow should be a beautiful 74 redwood city. 77 in mountain view. lots of 80's in the south bay tomorrow afternoon, sunday, all day long there, east bay temperatures also warming up very nicely. you're looking to 80 degrees in pleasanton 79 union city, 77 and they were just gorgeous out there all around. it is going to stay that way, least for one more day. now we're going to plea down just a little bit as we head into our friday and the weekend to next couple days. here it is. beautiful weather. gorgeous throughout thursday and then cooling down a little bit on friday as we get toward the weekend. here's the good news is not going to rain over the weekend, but we could see some patchy drizzle along the coastline. yeah. yeah. right along the coast. just right on the water's that maybe a little drizzle there. but overall, the weekend's going to be dry. something we haven't been able to say very often this year. so far we've had a run of the wet ones. it is. yeah, all right. guys.
