>> from the area's local news station, you're watching the kron. 4 morning news at 6. >> so far, so 06:00am this morning. i'm daria and i'm james. let's go for a nice, smooth commute this morning. unlike that would be nice in sunshine. i take a little that to yeah, it's not that we did have the sunshine yesterday, but that smooth commute was not a thing for today we are looking at a day that is going to bring plenty of sunshine to us and even warmer temperatures than what we had yesterday. a gradual warm up these next several days where we're sitting right now in san jose. you can see that skies are clearing up anyways. we're going to see a partly cloudy start much as we did yesterday and then some clearing this afternoon yesterday was especially foggy up on the 101, corridor in the north bay. i am watching nevado right now. we have some spots of fog right around there. some patchy valley fog around the tri valley to to watch out for this morning. current temperatures are in the 40's to 50's novato in petaluma in

the mid 40's right now. alameda sitting at 52 oakland, a cool 49 degrees. so jackets on this morning later on today. you'll just have to worry about the sunscreen again with some mid to even upper 70's and tomorrow getting even warmer over to rain. all right, john, thank you for news is no major disruptions as morning. you're traveling on your bridges or your highways. as of right now, k so 30 minute ride into the city in the meter, lights are on there. san mateo bridge just short of 14. 82 one-on-one moving could richards center fell bridge about 8 still nice and light golden gate bridge. 19 minute, right? 37 of the tolls just checking on some of those highways over really busy yesterday, like 8.80, san leandro into oakland show short of 11 minutes. all right. james, back to you. thank you. reyna 601. and a hearing for convicted killer scott peterson is going to happen this morning in redwood city. yeah, this is the first of 3 hearings that have been set as his new defense team. >> tries to get a new trial

crop was michael thomas following all of it from the hall of justice in redwood city. michael. >> hey, good morning, everyone. will the purpose of these hearings and overall goal is essentially to get a new trial for scott peterson by finding discrepancies in the prosecutor's case and essentially overturning his double murder conviction for killing his wife, laci and unborn son. conner, back in 2002, then dumping their bodies into the san francisco bay. and as james mentioned, this is just one of 3 hearings that we've got video up on your screen. so i can break it all down. now, his new defense team is hoping to do this by essentially asking for new dna testing on that actual case that will lead them to a new trial. peterson was convicted of those 2 murders back in 2004, but he's maintained his innocence while serving life in prison and a facility just east of sacramento. earlier this year, the los angeles innocence project which takes on cases that they believe are wrongfully convicted, took on peterson's case and is now asking a judge to approve new dna testing and reexamined

evidence from 2 decades ago. the evidence includes things that are related to a burned out van that was found near the peterson home in modesto around that time when his wife laci disappeared. his legal team is also asking the new dna testing be done specifically on the blood that was found inside that van. they're also asking to see reports that were collected during the search at the bay area. marina, we're lacey's remains were found and to see interviews that were conducted during that time, adding that police reports on a burglary that happened across the street from the peterson home also need to be re addressed. the original attorneys who prosecuted peterson are set to be here in court today. and peterson will join in via zoom from the newell creek state prison, which again, is just east of sacramento. now has 2. if these request will be granted or if any trial as possible, only time will tell in this court hearing is set to happen at 9 o'clock this morning. back out here live. we will have a team here throughout the morning and afternoon. continuing to bring you the latest from the

courtroom. that's the very latest here in redwood city on michael thomas. story of james. we'll send it back to you live in the studio here. thank you. we'll check back with you later. all right, 603. is that on? another big story that we're following this morning. more than 50. >> pro-palestinian protesters rallied outside the fremont bart station before then moving. >> to the tesla factory in fremont and police responded. things turned confrontational with protesters ripping down a and officers firing pepper. kron four's jack moment has more. >> and those pepper bullets not only hit the protesters, but they also a journalist as well, including us here kron 4 news, not before that confrontation with police officers. the protest was relatively peaceful and what demonstrators call a nationwide economic god. it's the chance heard around the bay area monday. protesters looking to make a statement blocking traffic. >> and some of the region's biggest names will not be complicit in genocide. and we

not allow economy to proceed like normal. khalil gibran organized for the protest says they want to target tesla as the benefits from u.s. tax dollars which also go to fund the country's allies like israel. >> even if no one in charge here is the message. broad says they are but we will come out in the numbers to make sure that we are her. what matters to them is their capitalism is one of the pressing people here in the states and globally. the protest started at the warm springs bart station in fremont at this protesters who didn't give us their name. >> says they were prepared to be there all evening. >> but quickly, the group took to their cars, arrived at the entrance of the tesla factory. employees tried to block off the crowd with fences, but the increasing number of protesters took it down. they marched all the way to the main entrance of tesla's factory where they met with police. it was peaceful at first, but fired at protesters and some the more we protest, the more we show up and we're

going to get. and i just hope that people are ready to come together and stand up the protests died down after that. but for people like that, they're corey, who is palestinian american and it's been affecting us our whole my whole life. he says he's standing up for his family who lives in the war zone. are you worried for >> absolutely. yeah. sometimes they don't respond because they're just like i said. >> they're tired of responding everybody, but it scares you because you don't know if something happened to them or they're just like tired responded, you know, now, these are the pepper that fremont police used against protesters. and of course, that ended up hitting journalist as well for you watching at home. these the definitely not feel good. now we reached out to from a police to find out how many people were arrested from today's protest as well as tesla for comment. but we did not hear back reporting in fremont jacmel kron. 4 news. >> well, the effort to recall alum in his district attorney pamela price is moving forward. the alameda county registrar of voters has confirmed that there are enough valid signatures to now

issue a recall election. the group behind the effort called safe says that recalling price would bring positive change in alameda county. the next step is for the petition to be examined by alameda county board of supervisors who are set to meet about this next on april. 30th. it's 606. and happening today, the san francisco sheriff's office is going to talk about recent lockdowns happening at 2 jails. >> they say the jails are on lockdown after a number of inmate attacks on deputies and staff. the lockdowns had happened at county jails 2, 3, where the sheriffs says that inmates hurt 7 staff members since march. 29th. the union representing the deputies is demanding the california national guard be called in to help. that press conference is set for 2 this afternoon. federal officials are planning to close the women's prison in dublin. this after the fbi searched the prison last month in the last 3 years, at least 8 employees at the dublin

prison have been charged with sexually abusing inmates and 5 have already pleaded guilty. no word yet on when a date for the closing is. >> well, we are learning the ages. now those 2 teenage girls who were shot and killed in napa over the weekend. police say that one was 17 years old. the other was 19 officers arrived at the scene saturday and found the 2 girls suffering from gunshot wounds. they say one of those girls sadly died at the scene and the other died at the hospital saturday night. neighbors we spoke with were shocked to hear what happened. >> you know, it's it's out of the norm. not just for the neighborhood, but for the the community of napa large. we just don't, you know, have homicides, you know, much less of a double so it's it's rattled us all. >> neighbors also tell us that this doesn't happen in this neighborhood. it's generally a safe place. so far no arrests

have been made at this point. but police say more information about the shooting will be released soon. so we'll keep you updated. meanwhile, one person is hurt after their car was hit by a caltrain near san martine station. damage firefighters say the car was on the tracks around 6.30, yesterday evening as the southbound train was approaching. there are we're about 25 passengers on board the train at the time of the crash. but nobody on board was hurt. >> time now 608. and mayor london breed is in china this week to strengthen economic ties. she met with the representatives of shins and airlines yesterday to talk about adding direct flights to sfo. she said in 2023, visitors from china spent more than 630 million dollars in san francisco. mayor reed says that boosting tourism lifts the entire economy. it creates jobs and supports local businesses. >> also today, governor newsom is going to be in the bay area will be here this afternoon

announcing a new climate partnership. >> with norway, that event is set to happen at noon today. >> with 2 dogs are reunited after one was trapped in a well for 6 hours. all right. look at this photo. this is merida. she was covered in cuts from trying to get free from that. well, she was rescued because of the other dog wellington. he never left her side and a security guard saw the dogs ended up calling oakland animal services to come out and try and help. and in the end, those dogs were or the one was rescued. they were both reunited. both are doing much better this morning. it is 609. still ahead on the kron 4 morning news. dozens arrested and charged in monday's protests across the bay area. we're going to break down the specifics of those charges and why one legal expert says they could be hard to prove in court. plus, scammers are targeting pg e customers will tell you what you need to be on the lookout for. and after the break. no relief in sight for bay area.

have been charged after a man was killed while they were reportedly trying to get away from police. patrick sheckells from oakland facing 6 felony charges now including murder. they also charged andrea huberty of stockton with burglary of a tobacco store later killing leave whiner when the suspects were running away from police. california attorney general rob bonta and secretary of state shirley weber are suing the city of huntington beach over new voter id requirements approved by voters the march primary. this will allow the city to require voters to show an id starting in 2026. to vote bonta and weber argue the measure violates state law and we make it harder for some legal voters to cast their ballot. a distressed bride to needs the public's help. a porch pirate in redwood city took off with her wedding dress. redwood city police now asking the public if they seen this man, anyone who recognizes this person is asked to call police. the

was a much different look at yesterday. now it's just a little fog. you're contending with. we will take that any day. you can see out there some spots of fog up in marin county to watch around of either 1, 1, 0, one, some fog forming out there this morning. your travel up and down. the north bay could be impeded by some low visibility again, skies otherwise are crystal clear. got a gorgeous day ahead of us. is this high-pressure ridge builds in more and more contributing to this slow and steady warm-up that we've been seeing. as i mentioned, a little fog closer to the coastline, mostly couple spots of it forming out towards livermore, though, as for the rest of the day skies clear pretty nicely. we'll see to be even warmer than today. these are about to be as for where we're sitting today, it 60's in the city as well as at the coast and then for the rest of us, a lot of 70's out there early game south through mountain view into the south

bay, solidly in the 70's today. in some cases, anywhere from 5 to 7 degrees warmer than it was yesterday. so this is a noticeable warm-up. you will get outside today and think, alright, maybe shorts and t-shirts. weather again tomorrow. you will certainly be thinking that as we do achieve some low 80's inland, same into thursday, the weekend ahead looks absolutely gorgeous. lots of sunshine, dry skies this time around for the weekend right now. all right, john, thank you for that. we're much better start today than yesterday. >> checking on 8, 85, 80 this morning where yet the protests there, you can see this morning. things are clear and 11 that iran leandro up to oakland also traveling southbound. we're still in the green there. bridge right now, 14 minute ride may so that free, much gx and no access or hazards. there. san mateo bridge looking good at 18 minute ride. richmond fell bridge in golden gate bridge, both clear as well. 30 minute ride. 85 to menlo park along 101 to 82. 37. we're at the limit. still selanne shut down

to 37. these are starting to feel just a little bit to hayward. you're still under 30 minutes making that commute area days. back to you. thanks. a lot rain is 6.17, in the north bay, a man who was hit by a car earlier this month. the santa rosa has died of his injuries. the car hit the man. >> here at around 9 o'clock at night, you can see the area he was walking in a corporate center parkway. it's a basketball road. he was taken to the hospital and died on sunday. he was not in a marked crk ort a controlled intersection when he was hit by that car. and police say the driver did cooperate with investigators. they say that drugs or alcohol was not a factor in that accident. today, sonoma county, home care providers plan to rally at the board of supervisors meeting. they want what they call a livable wage. the union for the workers says that home care providers and nursing workers are making less in that county than what it costs to live in sonoma county. they

say the low wages contribute to a caregiver shortage. the rally is at 10 o'clock this morning. >> well, state senator dave court, ashley now set to present a senate bill that aims to expand data centers in siliton valley. that bill will be presented to the state energy utilities and communications comlittee today. a court se says the bill will help sustain the growth of silicon valley's technology sector by expanding data centers across the state. he says the lack of data center's is underscoring the need right now to meet the demand of the industry and that streamlining the approval process for the center's will ensure that tech industry continues to grow and stay competitive. gas prices are now almost $0.10 higher than they were last week. all according to the latest data from triple-a nowhere in the bay area, we find gas under $5. the good news is gas prices are about one to $0.2 lower than they were yesterday. still pretty high. take a look from the north bay down to the peninsula. you're paying about 5.70, to 5.75.

for a gallon of regular gas in the east bay. a little relief for drivers gas there about 5.67 in alameda county and 5.62. there, as you can see in contra costa county in the south bay. and so on a county, that's where you'll get the best bang for your buck with 5.61 in santa clara and 5.61. as well across solano county, 6.19, and a top psychological group says that social media features. >> where the scrolling, you know, you're scrolling and time-consuming that they say is that's particularly risky. >> 2 young people's mental health. the report is from the american psychological association and it finds that endless scrolling. do they call that doom? scrolling or something? yeah, because is a distraction. 2 young people's developing brains and now they are urging tech companies to change their policies and take more measures to protect adolescents, mental health. the argument is that the age restrictions right now, the

apps don't fully address these dangers. kids can work their way around that. we know the report did not offer any specific changes, but they say that parents can also play a role in limiting social media use and being aware. google says that they are reducing california news websites from their search results. the company is pushing back against a pending state bill that would require big tech companies too pay publishing. publishers to show their content. google claims that that bill would change their business model. some lawmakers are condemning google's actions calling them and abuse of power. >> in the east bay else, rita police have arrested a man suspected of shooting at a passing car last summer. they say walter martinez fired several shots at a car passing by and then ran off. martinez is being held right now on $350,000 bond in contra costa county jail. we're going take a break. it is 6.21. but coming up on the kron 4

scammers they say are convincing they often target those most vulnerable. a small business owners have been targeted during busy customer service hours pg and e says the common trend they're seeing includes scammers asking for payment in an can. good dish a conventional way like a prepaid debit card like you can pay with a gift card, a debit card. >> third-party mobile payment applications. they don't accept payments like that. so that's your first clue. it's a scam. and then also the scammers threaten to disconnect power because of past due bills. if you don't pay immediately and pg won't do that. also they ask for personal information. so there are some clues they should look at. in developing news, tesla is laying off more than 10% of their global workforce. ae least 14,000 workers are going to be impacted, swept up in this round layoffs. we don't know which teams are going to be cut at this point

or experience cuts. it seems layoffs are going to go, though, all the way up to top management staff in california and texas have been notified about the layoffs they were told on monday. so we know that were affected here. this comes as tesla is grappling with falling sales and more competition in the electric car market. >> in the east bay, a decision to annex this area between the city of concord and pittsburgh to build housing is being postponed. this is the last madonna's ridgeline, the city of pittsburgh and the developer. discovery builders wants to annex about 600 acres so they can build upwards of 1500 units, housing units, but organizations like save mount diablo, say not so fast without another environmental review. attorneys for discovery builder says they already sent biological consultants to the area who found at that site would or wouldn't affect plant species because the ridgecrest already has limited environmental conditions. officials will now

decide whether to move forward with the protections and that will be on june. 12th will see what they decide. well, a second chick-fil-a location is opening in the city of pleasanton this week. the new location at the crossroads shopping center will honor 100 pleasanton heroes with free chick-fil-a entrees for a year. the owner will also donate $25,000 to feeding america to aid in the fight against hunger in the local pleasanton community. >> 6.26, and coming up next on the kron 4 morning news, california business owners are in the nation's capital this week working to secure federal dollars for the region. we're going some of what's top of mind for that.

>> 6.29 right now and things are looking up already on this tuesday morning. they are. bright sunshine for the week ahead. really no rain in sight. far as i if i remember the forecast, right? john yes, you are remind us. every 10 minutes i you get a lot yesterday was a busy at all the other worlds. but hey, you know what? we are looking at a day today. that is going to be a little bit warmer than yesterday and hopefully a lot calmer, too. looking outside. we've got a little taste of that sunshine above the fog that is streaming in through the golden gate this morning. you can see the presence of fog up into the north bay, too. and i'm watching a little bit of a long 101, not as bad as it was on the 101 yesterday, but still watch for some low visibility spots. also a little fog formation in the tri valley and out into the delta as well. current temperatures in the 40's to 50's conquered and san francisco at 50 degrees.

brought it all to live here on the kron. 4 morning news all started on 8.81. protesters chain themselves to 6 concrete filled drums. traffic was at a standstill in both directions on 88 ian's particular northbound 4 hours. and then the protesters blocked the southbound lanes of the golden gate bridge and chained themselves together. there they did. after hours, traffic was snarled, shut down in both directions. so what's going to happen to the dozens of people who were arrested? kron 4 sarah stinson takes a look. >> i implore people, please. protest were here to protect your rights to protest, but you cannot block roadways. you cannot keep emergency personnel, whether it's ambulance or law enforcement. fire department from getting out to assist other people. >> stern words from california highway patrol after arresting 38 protesters monday. they were among hundreds of people who disrupted traffic for hours at 3 different locations in the bay area. all calling

for an immediate cease-fire in gaza. 26 people got arrested after blocking all lanes on the golden gate bridge. 7 people got arrested on i-80 in oakland after a group locked their arms 280 pound concrete barrels in the middle of traffic lanes. and at the 7th street exit of i-80, 8000's of protesters walked onto the freeway. 5 people got arrested there. chp says the protesters now face a slew of charges. the most serious being conspiracy to commit a crime and false imprisonment, which surprise legal expert stephen clark. >> the chp is obviously taking this very seriously with these arrests suggesting conspiracy that could elevate these charges to a felony. the protesters on the golden gate bridge will be prosecuted by the san francisco district attorney and the protesters in the east bay will be prosecuted by the alameda county district attorney.

>> clark says it might be hard to prove the false imprisonment charges. certainly you can argue that the protesters by shutting down access on the bridge you are presenting those drivers. >> at the same time, the drivers could have got out of their car and left. so i don't know that that it's false imprisonment charge would hold up in trial. >> clark says as a former prosecutor, this will be overall a challenge in court when the defense argues for first amendment rights. i think it will be a difficult call for the da just how to handle these cases. >> because this is a very progressive community. we do respect the right free speech. but at the same time, we don't want to see public safety jeopardized. >> i'm sara stinson reporting kron. 4 news. >> 6 34 2 men are charged killing. a man was killed, trying to get away from the police. the contra costa county's da office says the patrick sheckells from oakland faces 6 felony charges

including murder. and they've also charge andrea albert ii of stockton with burglary last month. they say there was a break-in at elstree. do tobacco store products were stolen and when the police got there, they ended up chasing the suspect who eventually got on 5.80, near the bay bridge toll plaza. and moments later, car crashed into 2 other vehicles. weiner was driving one of those vehicles that was struck and he killed and that action just to innocent bystander struck by this car's getaway car. a distressed bride to be needs the public's help in redwood city, a porch pirate took off. >> with her wedding dress. take a look at what happened. here's the video you out. just walking up, grabbing the package like is, you know, happens well inside. >> that was her $2000 wedding dress. swipe right off the porch. their this happened last thursday around 8.30, in

annual capital to capital advocacy conference also known as kept a cat. organized by the sacramento metropolitan chamber of commerce. the four-day event includes more than 170 meetings with influential government leaders all with the end goal, the secure billions of dollars in federal funding for back home. this is the place to be. let's invent the future. adressing the delegation. sacramento congress'ember ami bera spoke about the need for economic development during a one-on-one interview. he said that must enclude a push to ensure money from the 1.2 trillion dollar bipartisan infrastructure law of 2021. continues to fund local projects for bridges, roadways and green technology. those federal dollars. we want to make sure we bring that back to california. bringing back to sacramento to la to san diego and those they think of those cities kept to cap. attorneys are asking for more federal resources to help with an issue in communities and on sidewalks like this one across the state. >> the issue of homelessness

were in an urgent all need to address this issue. lisa bates is the ceo of sacramento steps forward. a nonprofit organization working to get resources to people experiencing homelessness. she's pushing members of congress to extend tax credits for low income at-risk families. >> and for tax credits to incentivize the creation of more affordable housing housing with services are instrumental able to to move people out permanently out of homelessness. in total, the conference includes 13 policy groups. each focused on a different issue from flood protection to education to food and agriculture also included the issue of public safety and specifically a plea for help to address retail theft. >> devastating, i mean, this could literally bankrupt the business. wire businesses leaving open in san francisco while leaving san diego. why are they leaving california? because other retail theft crisis, needs to be addressed. and speaking of public safety.
