money is being used to aid israel in a genocide dusted by what's happening in gaza. their message for peace. however, causing major disruptions to millions of people just trying to start their monday. when fun time from the bay area's local news station. >> you're watching kron. 4 news. >> joining us here on kron for news at 10, i'm noelle bellow. i'm ken wayne. traffic in the bay area was stopped for hours as demonstrators cause some big problems on some major freeways shut downs happening at the golden gate bridge and various parts of i-80 in oakland about 300 protesters blocked an on-ramp to interstate 80 in oakland where they were confronted by a number of highway patrol officers. and on northbound 8.80, officers spent several hours trying to cut protesters out of chains that were attached to concrete filled barrels on won. about 60 protesters took part in shutting down the golden gate bridge. dozens of them locking

themselves together inside their parked cars. >> causing gridlock traffic, the california highway patrol says they arrested 26 protesters there. >> the protests calling for the end of the war in gaza turned confrontational in fremont, we're demonstrators clashed with police outside the tesla factory with officers firing pepper into the crowd. more than 50 people rallied. they're starting off at the warm springs bart station before marching over to the tesla plant. kron four's jack moment was at that protest today. >> he has more details, jack. >> well, that's right. and those pepper, they not only hit the protesters got here 3 months. they but hey also journalists such as us here. also kron 4 as well. now before the confrontation with

police, the protesters marched. it was relatively pretty peaceful in a protest in which demonstrators called a nationwide economic block. it. >> god, it's the chants heard around the bay area monday. protesters looking to make a statement blocking traffic and some of the region's biggest names will not be complicit in genocide. and we not allow economy to proceed like normal. khalil gibran organized for the protest says they want to target tesla as the benefits from u.s. tax dollars which also go to fund the country's allies like israel. >> even if no one in charge here is the message. jim braude says they are but we will come out in the numbers to make sure that we are her. what matters to them is their capitalism is one of the pressing people here in the states and globally. the protest started at the warm springs bart station in fremont at this protesters who didn't give us their name. >> says they were prepared to be there all evening. >> but quickly, the group took

to their cars, arrived at the entrance of the tesla factory. employees tried to block off the crowd with fences, but the increasing number of protesters took it down. they marched all the way to the main entrance of tesla's factory where they met with police. it was peaceful at first, but fired at protesters and some the more we protest, the more we show up and we're going to get. and i just hope that people are ready to come together and stand up the protests died down after that. but for people like that, they're corey, who is palestinian american and it's been affecting us our whole my whole life. he says he's standing up for his family who lives in the war zone. are you worried for >> absolutely. yeah. sometimes they don't respond because they're just like i said. >> they're tired of responding everybody, but it scares you because you don't know if something happened to them or they're just like tired responded. you know >> now these are the pepper that fremont police shot at

protesters that ended up hitting journalists as well. let me tell you, folks watching at home, he's definitely did not feel good. now we reached out to fremont police to find out how many people, if at all, were arrested from today's event. we also reached out to tesla for comment. we did not hear back from both of those sources reporting live in fremont jacmel that kron. 4 news. >> i thank you. to days earlier, protests on the freeways seemingly came together pretty quickly. but then they took hours to clear kron four's grant lotus here in the studio with a timeline of what happened today. grant canada. well, it's a timeline that some of this morning's commuters will not soon forget. >> and it is time they will not be getting back. the trouble began around 6.30, this morning for them on interstate 80 protesters there blocked all 4 northbound lanes south of 5th street and market area. some of the protestors chained themselves to those large barrels that were filled with concrete a truck dropped them off. they wait several

100 pounds. and again, you have chains holding people so is quickly clear. there would be no fast way to rectify this. these chains had to be surgically cut. then suddenly news of a second protest on the golden gate bridge. protesters blocked all lanes in the southbound direction, backing up traffic for miles into marine. meanwhile, back in the east bay, the protest was not only affecting northbound 8.80, but south bound aid. 80 also got shut down as hundreds of protesters with batters got onto the freeway. there. all right. we go back to the golden gate bridge, things finally bn opening up in clearing up a little after noon. the chp said the situation could have been worse. >> they prevented, you know, law enforcement, paramedics, ambulances to get to their points of destination and prevent that from happening. >> now, back on 8.80, eventually begin moving again there this afternoon. the protest covered a span of

roughly 7 hours and that is not counting the time it took for the long lines of drivers too resume moving in, eventually reach their destinations. cannon. noel, back to you. >> and thank you. today, the bay bridge was spared of any demonstrators, but 5 months ago it was the site of the first major protest related to the war here in the bay area. now it happened in november during president biden's visit to the bay area during the apec conference. dozens of people stopped their cars blocking traffic for hours on the bay bridge, just east of treasure island. they tossed their keys into the bay below while calling for a permanent cease-fire. a san francisco judge ordered 78 of the 80 demonstrators to 5 hours of community service. they also agreed to pay more than $4,000 in restitution to avoid criminal charges. then last month, protesters took over san francisco international

airport calling for a cease-fire in gaza there. they lined up block to the gates with giant banner reading stop the world for gaza. there were speakers using megaphones leading chance, others playing drums. this went on for hours. no arrests were made then. and earlier this month, pro-palestinian protesters blocked the entrance of a lockheed martin research facility in sunnyvale about 250 people participated in that rally. it lasted for about 5 hours. at one point, the situation got a bit scary. a driver speeding towards the protesters got out of his car and he threatened them with a knife. no one was arrested during that protests. now in today's protests, at least 38 people were arrested. some could be facing felony charges. coming up at 10, 30 kron four's sara stinson. we'll be breaking down the specifics of the charges they could be facing and why one legal expert says they could be hard to prove in court.

well, the sun may return today. warm temperatures up a little bit, but it is going to get much warmer in the coming days is. >> the high pressure going to be moving in? here's your wake-up weather tomorrow morning. couple patches of fog early on 06:00am temperatures little cool to starting out in the 40's early on tomorrow morning. i think though we're going to see some changes as early as 8 o'clock in the morning. a little more scattered fog outside pushing more toward the coastline, maybe just inside the bay and 50's. but by 10, yeah, we're going to see mostly sunny skies. that's when temperatures begin to warm up. probably mid 60's in the bay and the valleys. still cool fog out of the coast. >> thank you, at 10 1 person injured after their car was hit by a caltrain this evening near saint martin station. firefighters say the car was on the tracks around 6.30, this evening as a southbound train was approaching. you can see the damage done there. there were about 25 passengers on board the train when it crashed into the car. no one on board was hurt. >> kron 4 is your local

>> chaos in oakland, several sideshows took over city streets this weekend. at least 2 cars were set on fire. police say they arrested 3 people total. 21 cars and handed out 52 citations. 2 men have been charged after leading police on a chase that killed an innocent bystander. the crash happened last month after an alleged robbery in el serino. investigators say the 2 men broke into an el serino tobacco store overnight and led police on a chase towards the bay bridge toll plaza in oakland. the suspects then went the wrong way crashing into a van and a bmw. the driver of that bmw died at the scene. >> a person inside the van was seriously injured. police identified the 2 suspects as patrick sheckells from oakland

and andre albert ii from stockton. shekels is facing 6 felony charges including murder albert ii facing burglary and grand theft charges. >> tomorrow convicted killer scott peterson is set to be back in redwood city courtroom. this will be the first of 3 hearings in an effort to get his murder conviction overturned. peterson, of course, was convicted in 2000 for murdering his wife and their unborn child. peterson has maintained his innocence. lawyers are asking a judge to approve new dna testing and that evidence from the case be reexamined. >> to san francisco jails are on lockdown after a number of inmate attacks on deputies and staff. those lockdowns are happening at county jails 2, 3, where the sheriff's office says 7 staff members have been hurt by inmates since march. 29th. the union representing those deputies is now demanding the california national guard be called in to help. >> federal officials are planning to close the women's prison in dublin. this comes after the fbi searched the prison last month in the last

3 years. at least 8 employees at the dublin prison been charged with sexually abusing inmates. 5 of them have already pleaded guilty. no word yet on a date of when that prison will shut down. >> the effort to recall alameda's district attorney pamela price is moving forward. the alameda county of registrar of voters has confirmed there are enough valid signatures to trigger a recall election. the group behind the effort safe says recalling price would bring positive change to alameda county. the next step is for the petition to be examined by alameda county board of supervisors who are set to meet next on april. 30th. >> california attorney general rob bonta and secretary of state shirley weber are suing the city of huntington beach in orange county over new voter id requirements approved by voters there in the march primary. that measure allows the city to require voters to show id when voting in person starting in 2026. want an weber argue the measure violates state law and late.

and makes a return to some spring weather that we're used to in the bay area outside. right now, skies are mostly clear looking good. all around will be a little bit cooler spots overnight tonight, but numbers out there right now. 55 degrees in san francisco to 55 in oakland. 57 degrees in san jose. 53 in livermore. 55 in concord and 54 degrees and clear in santa rosa. well, you may have noticed things have begun to change and you see a lot of green lot of think drone out there. all that rain has led to some high pollen count as we head into the next couple days. plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures. everything is going to be blooming out there wednesday, thursday and friday. the pollen count expected to be running high saturday, maybe just a little bit of a break coming down in the medium category. but 7 outside right now. yeah, the numbers all around. you got some cooler temperatures along the coastline. 49 now in a pacifica. 49 also in fairfax. still 54 degrees in berkeley, but overall, i think the trend it's going to be some nicer weather. high pressure going

to start to build in little bit of a northerly component. the winds right now like we could see just enough of a sea breeze along the coastline tonight, maybe a few patches of fog. when you wake up early tomorrow morning. that's it. it's not going to be a fog bank outside. then we're off and running with some nice weather. as high pressure builds overhead and that ridge will send these temperatures up tomorrow. so we have some 60's and a few low 70's today. i think we're moving the upper 70's by tomorrow afternoon. some of the warmest valleys, the santa clara valley should be very nice in the east bay. parts of the north bay inland. those temperatures running well in the 70's. so enjoy some nice weather head looks like tonight, though, forecast models to try and bring a couple patches of fog cau side early on by the afternoon. maybe a couple of passing high clouds. but right now looks like we're staying high and dry. the jet stream moving well to the north should be dry for the week ahead. guys, back to thank you, lawrence. a portion of pro canyon road in alameda county is closed through august for road work. the road is set to be closed between 08:00am and 05:00pm for reconstruction and replacement of 3 cross covert drivers should avoid the area

during those hours. officials recommend drivers traveling between cast your ballot in san ramon. take highway 5.80, or 6.80, instead. >> fewer people are buying rooftop solar panels for their homes. the industry is shrinking hit by high interest rates. tight credit and cuts to solar incentives. more than 100 solar contractors have already gone out of business during the past year. as demand has dried up. california is also cutting the amount of compensation, most rooftop solar owners get for the electricity they sent to the grid by 75% or more as the cost of upgrading the grid is soaring. experts say california's experience could foreshadow what the rest of the country will face as it deals with rising costs of grid and transmission upgrades. >> in an historic moment, former president donald trump went on trial in new york city today is facing charges related to alleged hush money payments made ahead of the 2016 election. our washington correspondent hannah brandt

bride would love for you to call police. no, ma'am. imagine. >> tesla is reportedly laying off more than 10% of its workforce. this according to an internal email obtained by multiple news organizations, reports are suggesting at least 14,000 workers will be let go. it's unknown which teams will be affected. staff in california and texas were reportedly notified about the layoffs already. this comes as tesla grapples with falling sales and competition over the cost of electric vehicles. tesla has not responded to requests for comment. >> despite many stories of people leaving california data from the state capital shows going states population is on the rise. the data says as a as of the beginning of the year, the state's population rose over 39 million people. that is being credited to fewer people working remotely and relaxed restrictions by the federal government on legal immigration.

>> it's been decades since the u.s. lost its first a butterfly species. the zoo are sees blue butterflies. now they're making bit of a comeback with a close relative being reintroduced to the dunes of san francisco's presidio through genetic testing. scientists were able to compare the genetic code of these or cease to the structures of other common blue butterflies flies. and last week, dozens of silvery blue butterflies were released into 50 acres of restored dune habitat. researchers say silvery blue will perform the same ecosystem functions cersei's as both a pollinator and a critical member of the food web. >> and so we found thriving population that totally capable of donating a few individuals to establish a new population. so this is a new beachhead for silvery blues and they're standing in the big shoes of >> researchers will continue to track the butterflies

than $4,000 in restitution to avoid criminal charges. so what will happen to the dozens of people arrested today from 4? sara stinson talked with a legal expert to try to find out joins us now here in the studio with the story. sarah. >> 38 protesters got arrested today. chp says they were working with the district attorneys in 2 counties to file a variety of 8 charges against those arrested. many will have to fight misdemeanors and citations in court, but some could even be charged with a felony. i spoke with a former prosecutor who says these charges make it seem like chp really wants to crack down on protests like these. >> i implore people, please protest. we're here to protect your rights to protest, but you cannot block roadways. you cannot keep emergency personnel, whether it's ambulance or law enforcement, fire department from getting out to assist other people. >> stern words from california highway patrol after arresting 38 protesters monday. they

were among hundreds of people who disrupted traffic for hours at 3 different locations in the bay area. all calling for an immediate cease-fire in gaza. 26 people got arrested after blocking all lanes on the golden gate bridge. 7 people got arrested on i-80 in oakland after a group locked their arms 280 pound concrete barrels in the middle of traffic lanes. and at the 7th street exit of i, 8000's of protesters walked onto the freeway. 5 people got arrested there. thp says the protesters now face a slew of charges. the most serious being conspiracy to commit a crime and false imprisonment, which surprise legal expert stephen clark. >> the chp is obviously taking this very seriously with these arrests suggesting conspiracy that could elevate these charges to a felony. the protesters on the golden gate bridge will be prosecuted by the san francisco district

attorney and the protesters in the east bay will be prosecuted by the alameda county district attorney. >> clark says it might be hard to prove the false imprisonment charges. certainly you can argue that the protesters by shutting down access on the bridge you are presenting those drivers. >> at the same time, the drivers could have got out of their car and left. so i don't know that that it's false imprisonment charge would hold up in trial. clark says as a former prosecutor, this will be overall a challenge in court when the defense argues for first amendment rights. i think it will be a difficult call for the da just how to handle these cases. >> because this is a very progressive community. we do respect the right to free speech. but at the same time, we don't want to see public safety jeopardized. >> i reached out to both district attorneys in alameda county and san francisco. it's too soon to say what charges they will pursue. but clark believes that they will be looking into if some of the

protesters from today attended and got arrested at the bay bridge shut down. so that will definitely be a factor. i'm sure. and he pays that could even enhance some of the charges. >> you know, whats interesting is is said the counties all have different district attorneys who have different levels of aggressiveness over certain charges there. i mean, there are stories about people who are south of geneva avenue near the cow palace. and if they do something on the san mateo county side, they ran across the street so that they get caught. they'll be prosecutors, san francisco where they think they can get off easier. and i'm people are coming into san francisco in the going gate bridge in the morning are generally from the north bay marin county and its interesting that san francisco's prosecuting them instead because the bridge is in both counties and the pens were on the bridge. this took place. it's very try was actually shocked. it wasn't going to be a marine county because we're the cameras. it looks like it was on that side. but >> san francisco da will be in charge of this. and speaking with that legal expert, he says it would be smart if the

2 counties work together because this is hard to prove and it's going to take a lot of effort together. all the social media evidence. >> and get people's faces and get video of them actually in the act. and so he says best we work together and create a unified message against these types of pro protests that block traffic and emergency vehicles. more than a effort that seemed to happen. it all happened. boom, boom, boom, here, chicago. you know, it was clearly very well thought out and planned by these protesters. but that could potentially mean harsher center are harsher punishment. that's where the conspiracy will come into play. and we'll have to see if that plays out court. all right, thank you for that. >> because of the protest, a lot of people, of course, had to find different ways to try to get around this morning. and some of those people into the larkspur ferry after hearing about the situation on the golden gate bridge week on some who frustrated, but others were supportive of the protesters. >> very disturbing day

area. anyone with information is asked to contact, snap apd, a prison correction. officers pleaded guilty to taking bribes from inmate. steven crittendon worked at the california medical facility. >> in vacaville, investigators say crittendon accepted bribes of more than $45,000 from inmates. we wanted him to smuggle in cellphones. he's scheduled to be sentenced in september. he faces up to 10 years in prison. >> celebrity paris hilton is advocating for a bill to bring more accountability to youth treatment facilities in california, she joined lawmakers in sacramento today. if the bill is approved, it would require facilities to publicly post information related to the use of restraints and seclusion rooms. helton has been open about her experience at similar facilities, even testifying before congress. she says this bill will help protect the state's youth. they count ability and children's treatment act increases. transparency. >> so the public knows what

couple of them coming your way. a matter of we're going to see a nice week ahead. show you the 10, 10 here in a few minutes. but yeah, it kind of putting that cold. stormy weather behind this a bit right now. looks like some much drier. >> drier, weather pattern settling in for maybe the next 6 to 10 days. we'll see what happens after that. but out there right now. yeah, we've got mostly clear skies. you may see couple patches of fog form along the coastline overnight tonight and that we're looking good today. temperatures. yeah, we topped out at 70 degrees in santa rosa member of the weekend. we have some of those highs only in the 50's. it was unusually cold over the weekend. a snapback today, though, just a bit. 69 in concord, 67 for a high in livermore. 69 in san jose, 60 in oakland and also into san francisco. but much warmer weather is on the way. so tonight, mostly starry skies. couple patches of fog along the coastline by tomorrow morning. and then mostly sunny, warmer temperatures by tomorrow afternoon. moving in the mid, maybe some upper 70's by late today. and i think even warmer as we look toward the middle of the week with maybe some temperatures sneaking into the low 80's. that's a pretty nice

weather ahead. but hey, how about all that rain? it's been a tremendous year. of course, these last 2 years really helping out the state. we've had above normal precipitation. again, the areas shaded here in gold here. those already above normal for the entire season. now sitting in 116% of normal in san francisco. well, above the average in san jose, the 132%. so a little bit below average but not bad at oakland and 90% and 116% normal in santa rosa seabreeze. yep, it's blown out there just a bit. but there's more of a northerly component right now that will keep mostly fog free except along the coastline. maybe some that fog sneaking in as we head toward early tomorrow morning. a long-range forecast, though, looking nice and dry. that jet stream moving well in the north. get that northerly wind. some nice weather will see some passing clouds, but staying dry. it looks like as we head in toward the next 5, 7 days, at least. and then beyond that, well, not too bad, either about 64 degrees. downtown temperatures go tomorrow. you'll find some cooler weather coast side with a couple patches of fog inside the bay should be beautiful. 70 millbrae and sunny. beautiful. 75 in san carlos.
