>> news station, this is home. news 11. >> appreciate your joining us tonight for kron. 4 news at 11, i'm grant lotus and i'm noelle bellow. a big update on a story we've been following leaders at the port of oakland have voted unanimously to move forward with renaming the oakland airport. the board will make a final vote next

month. this is become really controversial. san francisco. it's getting ready to file a lawsuit against the ports saying the new name infringes on sfo is trademark. but for sarah stinson reports. >> and impending lawsuit from san francisco didn't seem to stop the port of oakland's board. in fact, they didn't bring it up at all. commissioners only talked about how the name change will put oakland airport on the map boosting its revenue. the oakland airport is one step closer to getting a new name. the san francisco bay, oakland international airport to stickley i 7 eyes most the board of port commissioners unanimously voted in favor of the new name in its first reading of the ordinance thursday afternoon. the commission says this ss needed to boost travelers, geographic awareness of where the airport is located because there's a lack of name recognition or you're a any information on the airport. >> it is hard to sell tickets

but yeah, nice day today. beautiful weather all around the state. lots of sunshine as warm weather to we have a couple thunderstorms pop up over the sierra nevada, but it's that guy out there spinning around the gulf of alaska see that little swirl. a very cold storm rolling down now and headed toward the bay area. going to spin right off our coastline. and because of that, we're going to see some drastic changes. the temperatures go from 70's and 80's probably only topping out in the 50's over the weekend. so tomorrow, kind of a transitional day, this frontal system going to be dropping down, setting itself up. it will be off the coastline by tomorrow afternoon. could see some showers tomorrow night. more rain is on the way. maybe some thunderstorms, maybe even some snow. we'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. all right, lawrence, thank deadly shooting shutdown oakland city streets for hours this evening. oakland police investigating what happened along kennedy street near 8.80. kron four's. dan thorn has the latest. >> heartbroken family members stunned while standing before a number of oakland police investigators after a man was shot and killed. police having

to cordon off kennedy street between denison and the i-80 south on-ramp for several hours thursday evening, traffic heading onto the freeway building up at times as many onlookers responded to the large police presence, a woman who lives along kennedy street telling kron 4 off camera the killing may have been related to an attempted robbery. police have not confirmed those details after investigators comb through the scene, the alameda county coroner's office collected the man's body. the police tape was eventually removed as officers cleared the scene and with several businesses in the industrial area. it's unclear if any security video captured what happened. >> we're still working to get more information about this killing. we'll keep you updated as we learn more from oakland police in oakland, dan thorn kron. 4 news. >> a berkeley man has been charged with a woman near a

bart station. investigators say it happened around 6 o'clock monday night while the victim was walking on a trail near the north conquered bart station. police say larry ridge junior attacked her, forced her to the ground and raped her. they say the woman fought back until the man eventually ran into the bart station. police say they later found ridge and arrested him on the bart train. court documents show ridge had just been released from present 4 days before the concord barred attack. you is arrested last month in millbrae after he reportedly assaulted a woman at the millbrae bart station concord. police say the accused rapist is also a convicted murderer and was behind bars for almost 15 years. for that. according to prosecutors, ridge was freed from prison sometime after 2019 because of a change in california law. >> business owners along valencia street and san francisco's mission district say they're planning to take legal action against the city. now they say new bike lanes on the street has led to

financial losses, claiming the lanes blocked access and visibility to their businesses. they say more than 10 businesses have already closed since those bike lanes were installed. people in milpitas were arrested for theft at great mall. detectives say they arrested 5 suspects during a retail crime operation yesterday and during the same time all officers responded to a theft in progress, arresting an additional 3 suspects. no details on what was stolen. there are fewer people selling drugs in san francisco, according to city officials, police say >> they may. 42 arrests all in one day during an orchestrated crackdown. the arrests were yesterday in or near the tenderloin. police say out of the 42 people arrested 30 are wanted fugitives. they recovered fentanyl and meth. the sapd says they will continue patrolling at night in un plaza and other areas where people are dealing and using illegal drugs. >> the biden administration is

closing a loophole allowing gun buyers to avoid background checks at gun shows. the white house says the new rule will prevent guns from getting into the hands of domestic abusers, felons and other violent criminals. but the changes facing pushback from gun-rights advocates saying it invades a personal privacy. >> it's very concerning when this administration he's using the whole government approach to attack this industry to decimate your second amendment rights. >> the rule is expected to be challenged in courts and by republican lawmakers. another big story tonight, the death of oj simpson. the nfl star turned actor passed away at the age of 76 after battling cancer. he leaves behind a complicated legacy. he was born and raised in san francisco's potrero hill neighborhood in public housing after graduating from galle high school in the city, he >> started playing at city college of san francisco before taking his football career to u.s. seat. rick

chambers takes a look back at his career and the controversial murder case that captivated the country. >> we the jury in the above entitled action. find the defendant or jump on james simpson not guilty of the crime of murder. >> %t was the trial of the century. oj simpson star football player and hollywood actor accused of savagely murdering his ex-wife, nicole brown and her friend ron goldman. estimated 150 million people watched the verdict come in life. the trial was broadcast in classrooms at workplaces and even on the oprah winfrey show where audience members both cheered and cried as he was acquitted. emotions usually falling along racial lines. before the trial. simpson was a popular actor starring in naked gun movies. he gained fame in college, though, winning the heisman trophy while playing football for usc. nicknamed the juice. he went on to the nfl and shattered both rushing

and touchdown records. as a member of the buffalo bills. all that changed, though on june 12th of 1994 as brown and goldman's bodies were found outside her la condo. simpson was an immediate suspect. and 5 days later he was ordered to surrender to police. instead, he led them on a slow speed chase down the 5 freeway to the 405, in that now infamous white ford bronco, his friend and former nfl player ac collings behind the wheel that evening. he surrendered at his brentwood mansion. the trial began in 1995. with an all-star lineup of lawyers nicknamed the dream team one by one. they dismantled the state's evidence claiming systematic racism and sloppy police work. the defining moment came when simpson tried on gloves that were left at the murder scene. he struggled to put them on and his lawyers use that in closing arguments

to show it couldn't possibly be him. >> remember these words? if it doesn't fit? we must acquit. >> shortly after simpson was found not guilty, he went to trial again for the murders. but this time in civil court, he was found liable for brown and goldman deaths there and ordered to pay more than 30 million dollars in damages. well, simpson never served time for murder. he did go to prison in 2008 for armed robbery and kidnapping in las vegas. simpson claimed that he was simply taking back sports memorabilia. that was his however, he spent almost 10 years behind bars. 14 million people tuned in as he was granted parole in 2017 at the age of 70. >> around >> thank oj simpson. a larger than life figure whose life and alleged crimes captivated and entire nation. >> stay with kron. 4 for

>> body-cam footage was released tonight of a dramatic rescue and rohnert park on april 4th. the driver was trapped inside an overturned car on highway 12 park police officer came upon the crash with several witnesses nearby. the officer broke the car window, cut the driver out of their seat belt. they were pulled from the wreckage with the help of the other bystanders. the drivers was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries. >> maybe remember this plane that crashed on the beaches in february in half moon bay, one of the man who investigators say stole this thing from palo alto and then landed there. will not stand trial. a judge has ruled this person is not competent and has suspended all the criminal proceedings against him. investigators say

he's still the plan to, quote, show the government that airports lack proper security as of yesterday afternoon, the man is still in custody. $10,000 bail. meanwhile, prosecutors say the private plane it's worth about $150,000 and was not seriously damaged. >> for the second year in a row, ocean salmon fishing will not be happening. the pacific fishery management council made that decision for the 2024 fishing season yesterday. kron four's rob nesbitt spoke with scientists from the california department of fish and wildlife about what's causing the low population. >> 2019 2020 were bad drought years in california. and last year we started to see the impact of that on the states and in population, the california department of fish and wildlife says it will take a few years for the fish to benefit from the improved water supply of today. california once had millions of salmon and it's rivers, streams and oceans. >> last year there were so few the commercial fishing season was closed and after a

wednesday vote by the pacific fishery management council, it's happening again for ocean fishing, senior environmental scientist with the california department of fish and wildlife, candice morgan stern explained how drought years and 2019 2020 resulted in this year's closure. >> examine that on in those drought years impacted the juveniles that are out migrating both survival rates to to warm water conditions. low flow morgenstern says the decision was already made to close ocean salmon fishing for the start of the season. wednesday's vote sealed the fate for the rest of 2024 school. most restaurant in san francisco hosted an event thursday for those in the salmon fishing industry. >> owner tom creed and explained how this is what is needed to allow fishing populations to bounce back. the best way to handle it. we've we've done it before. the fish do come back. if you just leave them alone when salmon fishing season was closed last year, the federal government allocated more than 20 million dollars for those impacted in the fishing

industry. governor newsom has requested a federal fishery disaster declaration to support fishing communities. again this year. >> distributed fishing industry interest. commercial recreational trollers, charter boats will be receiving those funds. she says it will take months for the governor's request to receive federal approval. >> there are still those in the salmon fishing community waiting on their approved federal relief from last year. we are still in the middle trailers and recreational anglers have not yet received funds from. >> the 2023 disaster declaration, the fishing of salmon and streams and rivers is still undecided. morgenstern says the state's inland fisheries are managed by the california fish and game commission. >> they're scheduled to make their vote next month. reporting in the newsroom. i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 news. >> lets get your check of your 4 zone forecast. taking a live look from mount tam this sir, beautiful evening. we've got up here. beautiful evening is

it was so nice today, lawrence, earlier funny. >> nothing funny at all. 70's and 80's out there today. but the joke is on us the next couple days. we're going to see a big change in the weather coming our way. a much colder air rolling into the bay area. so instead of 70's days, yeah, we're in the 50's for highs as we get to saturday and sunday. not going to be a whole lot warmer too out the door right now. we do have a couple batches of fog forming along the coastline. more on the way tonight. a couple high clouds coming our way. here's your storm off the coastline. pretty impressive. looking for this time of year. see storm like that in the gulf of alaska. that's going to drop all the way along the coastline as we head in toward tomorrow. also expect a big change in the weather for tomorrow. most of rain is going to hold off during the daytime hours. your commute early on. got some patchy fog and some mid to high level clouds out there, but mostly dry to start out your day. clouds on and off throughout the day and then that wind is going to pick up out the south as we head toward the afternoon. that rain. yeah, we could begin to see a couple of pop-up showers, at least to the north bay as we head toward tomorrow evening and

then kind of sweeps in overnight tomorrow night. and then we get things going early on the saturday morning. the good news is i think most of bulk of the heavy rain coming overnight friday night into early on saturday. if you sleep in that start to mix out, just heard the showers. but they're going to cold showers. in fact, you start to see some snow on our models begin to pick up over some of the mountain tops, maybe mount hamilton. so could be a pretty significant event to some rainfall totals, maybe over an inch of rain in parts of bay area. that would be a bit pretty impressive. april storm temperatures tomorrow going to take a hit as well. that's going start to back off 50's and 60's. maybe low 70's in sao and san jose. also little more so those 80's long gone and then we really cool things off on saturday, a slight chance of showers on sunday return of warmer weather as we head in toward next week. in fact, next weekend may actually be dry about that. i have people say that for quite a while. hey, we like it. yeah. keep saying, okay. skies. >> the short-handed warriors were up in portland tonight.
