>> from the bay area's local news station. we now with breaking news. >> thank you for joining us here at 07:00am on the kron. 4 morning news. and that breaking news is on the traffic front. yeah, exactly. we've been talking about an accident throughout the morning. michael thomas has that for us. good morning, michael. >> yeah, good morning, everyone. we're dealing with the sig alert over in the east bay. it's near the san lorenzo area and on zoom in. closer to see. you can see there's a big rig that overturned in. it's now completely closing off the

connector of northbound to 38 to 8.80, southbound lanes. you can see all that congestion there and we actually have a live look. there are photographer is on the scene. it's been like this since about 3 or 4 o'clock this morning. officials say that they break is turned over and you can actually see it over in this upper hand corner here, according to them, they're still trying to clean up all the fluids coming out of that truck as to when this connector is going to be back open. we're still waiting this. it could take hours for most of the morning. so those of you who are heading in that way trying to get on a t heading southbound, you're going to have to get off on mission and use that as an alternative route. so you can get back on 2.88 we may see some residual delays as well. we'll bring it back to the traffic maps here in the studio. so you can go ahead and see it leading up to this accident on 5.80, so far, not a major congestion, but we may start to see that as the morning progresses as people start to walk out that door before. send it back to the desk. we'll take a look at the bay bridge you can see right now to 15 minute commute or so from the maze into the city.

those metering lights are on. as of right now, taking a look at the san mateo bridge, 15 minute commute. there are some residual delays. there is there was also a d so that was stopped in the middle of the road earlier this morning, taking a look at the richmond, sandra fell bridge an 11 minute commute leading up to this point of the bridge. there's also another traffic collision before this. so keep that in mind before you head out the door, taking a live look at the golden gate bridge right now at 21 minute commute into the city. brandon james, we'll send it back to and i'll take it for a second. we are looking out there at what is going on at the golden gate bridge, which is >> little bit of fog making its way on in this morning. we are going to be looking at conditions today that are pretty mild for the coast elsewhere, though, and another hot one. here's the golden gate with that fog that's making its way in visibility is being affected for some coastal spots where the rest of us are tapping into nothing but sunshine. daytime highs will eventually climb right back to the 80's much as they were yesterday. right now, it's some 40's towards the coast and up in the north bay while 50's for the rest of us

later on today, one more day of those 80's. if you liked him yesterday, hopefully get a chance to enjoy today. coastal areas will stay in the 60's talking changes into the weekend involving cooler weather and some showers still to come back to you. all right. thank you for that. we have more breaking news. a pedestrian is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries after being hit by a car. >> this happened in san jose this morning. so the crash happened just after 5.20. this is right in the area story. really. and roberts avenue. police say traffic will be severely impacted because they blocked off the eastbound story road robert avenue to look read avenue. police are urging drivers use alternate routes while they investigate the crash. >> 702, is the time. and happening today, the oakland international airport could soon add san francisco to its name afternoon. the port of oakland there to vote on that controversial name change. san francisco officials say and ready to go to court over they are. yeah. kron four's will tran live at oakland airport to explain. good morning. will. the reason why they want

to go to court? james arena because san francisco officials believe that know the name san francisco. >> belongs to them. more specifically. it belongs to sfo and they believe if they change the name here, if you're waking up this morning, it is still called metropolitan oakland international airport. but after today, and maybe the days could change san francisco bay, oakland international airport. the reason according to a port of oakland officials, they believe that so many people are confused, not knowing that oakland is part of the bay area. they want to clear up the confusion, but they don't want to put the word oakland before san francisco. instead, they say they sit literally on san francisco bay and that's why they want to change it to san francisco bay, oakland international airport. to clear up the confusion claiming that one-third of domestic travelers, they don't

know clean is. as far as the location to the bay area and one half of international travelers don't the reason behind all of this money, they believe if it clears up the confusion, then possibly more flights will come into oakland international or by then it will be called san francisco bay, oakland, that would generate 10's if not hundreds of millions of dollars every year. i got a chance to talk to some travelers this morning. they don't like this idea. like white. because i think thing the confusion, but well, i have said consistently francisco does so much of you know. >> and i don't understand why oakland has to say san francisco it will say, oh, can but san francisco. >> will be the first words yet to oakland interim. i don't want to get a according to put

a port of oakland officials, they run the airport. they claim that a lot of oakland residents, those born and raised here. >> they're comfortable with the idea of san francisco going before the name oakland now san francisco. as far as their city attorney, they say we will see the next destination. we'll be in court. they also say now it will confuse a lot of people because let's just say they want to book to san francisco. they see san francisco bay oakland and then a book here and all of a sudden they're playing lands literally in oakland and not san francisco. so it causes confusion and another direction. and just add one more layer to this, even if it changes the san francisco bay, oakland international, the airport code will still remains a case. >> be inching. see how this shakes out will. thank you. >> while an arrest was made oakland are not in oakland arrests made in connection to a crash that killed a 9

year-old girl from oregon. chp says jesus, i've and iran test is in custody facing multiple charges. crash happened sunday morning on northbound in concord. chp says an suv carrying 6 people, joe, through that dirt median rolled over multiple times. 9 year-old girl died at the scene and her mother, 13 year-old sister, 2.17, year-old cousins, all still being treated at the hospital. police say the driver had initially ran off following the crash. his bail is now set $200,000. nearly 200 arrested more than 400 stolen cars covered in oakland. says they also recovered. 31 guns linked to crimes. these arrests and caesars. they remain in an 8 week period. they say people arrested were linked to carjackings, drug dealings, duis and thefts. the governor credits to increased presence of chp officers working with local law enforcement since about february. it's all a part of newsom's 10 point

action plan to support oakland's efforts to improve street safety as well as beautification. >> well, uncertain times now for a once popular san francisco barbershop. the owner of glades co barbershop says that before the pandemic they were a bustling business on columbus avenue there in the financial district. now they're seeing a fraction of their old customer base. they say it's largely due to people working more from home now post-pandemic. they started a gofundme page trying to keep their dream alive. and this all follows the recent and painful decision to close their other shop in walnut creek. >> probably one of the hardest things i've ever experienced in my life. they. set back from covid in people may think it's over, but it's not over for us. you know, in a lot of other small businesses. >> the owner says that the financial hardship is also kept them from expanding into the mission. rock development area near oracle park. that's one thing they wanted to do. they say the hope those to get through these turbulent times

by raising at least 100 $1000. daly city police now investigating after $200,000 in jewelry was stolen in a residential burglary. it happened on april 4th at a home on woodland avenue between 9, 30 10, 20 in the morning. police say $700 in cash and $500 worth of tools also stolen. >> santa clara county mosquito vector control hosted a press conference this morning at 10 to lure the east san jose community of a new invasive mosquito in the area. county officials, argo inform the community asked for their help to combat the aggressive species, the carry viruses and diseases such as yellow fever, the district hopes residents in that area lost out to access their properties to check for mosquitoes and treat them as needed order to remove the non native mosquitoes entirely. >> 708, is the time. and traffic deaths continue to plague the city of san jose. 13 people died in car crashes so far this year. and so city

leaders are now blaming the city's wide roads and speeding. yeah, we actually had a chance to talk with the mayor about what the city is doing to try prevent more deaths from poor jack moment has the story. >> from a fatal crash on monterey road in january. to a man who spent months trying to recover but ultimately died in april after he was hit by a car off mckee wrote, we do everything right. >> we follow all the rules we wear bright clothing. and still, we have a lot of those calls. max siegel with the organization, families for safe streets says even when walking his daughters to school, it's just too close for comfort close call can be. >> not paying attention to the intersection. san jose keeps track of its car crashes on a public database so far this year we have seen twice as many fatal car crashes compared to just this time last year. so many of the through ways that run through san jose rack up quite a few deaths from bad data set. but none may be more dangerous that monterey road, which

between 2018, 2023 logged 6 teen road fatalities here. when we just almost saw someone get that right now that we're talking to max off the corner of monterey and tully and has been shot. >> cars driving into the bike lane. they're supposed to be separated by these posts. you work towards. designing our streets, holistically. a public data also shows san jose's years long campaign to improve its roads like installing those bike lane markers and transforming battle through ways in the summer. i grew up on this section of brandon road right here. a couple decades ago. you had 3 lanes and 3 lanes of cars going within 40 miles an hour in the city of san jose. recognize the problem here ended up reducing it to 2 lanes to 2 lanes and added in protected bike lane. one death one too many when it comes to our roadways, people should feel safe. san jose mayor matt mahan says the projects are improving streets slowly but surely infrastructure projects are expensive the staff and

actually carry them out there says he wants to hire more police officers, 4 enforcement and even the potential addition of security camera automatically issue first a warning. and then after the first 6 months a ticket, max says the city should not only focus on police staffing. >> but the design of the roads themselves. and so we need again to have a design, a design, our streets. >> that encourages people and forces people to behave better. now there's some funding set aside to improve. king wrote that's an east side, san jose and yet another statistically dangerous road in the city. >> now regarding the security cameras, the mayor says that if city council approves those cameras, they would start with around 30 of them and placed them around school zones in the newsroom. i'm jack moment. kron 4 news. >> we're more business owners all are on the street and they're speaking out against the new bike lanes. 9 this morning, local business owners on the street. we're gonna hold a news conference to announce legal action against the city outlining their concerns for the bike lane project. businesses have reported stansell losses

>> all right. we're back 7.15, is the time. we want to start this quarter hour with a check of some breaking news to the trapping michael's been following. an accident is causing quite the delay. good morning, michael. >> hey, good morning, everyone. that's right. we are dealing with the sig alert over in the east bay near the san lorenzo area. and i actually just got word there's another crash that's happening before we get to this accident. take a look on the connector of to 38 80. those southbound lanes are completely closed off. and you see that delay there, purple and red causing major delays, the northbound lanes, however, are open. so if you're trying to get to 8.80, you may need to find another route. we've got a live look there on the scene. chp officials tell me that happened early this morning. there's a big rig that has flipped over on its side. so it's closing that entire connector. they're dealing with trying to clean up all of the fuel that's coming out of that big rig as to when these lanes are going to be back open. only time will really tell. i spoke with him about an hour ago. they said it could still be another

3 to 4 hours. so this started at 3 o'clock this morning. it's still like that. the best option for you would be to get off on mission and then head over back to 80. if you are heading south this morning. but if we can put our traffic maps back up on the screen, there's another collision that's happening in this general area. it's on westbound 5.80, as well right before you get to that actual congestion. and that connector, it's near strowbridge avenue. castro valley. those lanes are currently blocked and chp is trying to get that area cleared. so expect major delays if you're coming from the inland area this morning, heading over towards the actual 8.80, area. and you can see this is a look at what traffic is looking like near the pleasanton dublin area. livermore pleasanton excuse me, livermore to dublin. right now. it's a 12 minute commute. but that may change with that second accident that we're just getting word of another traffic collision. we're dealing with over near richmond area. it's just east of castro street. there's a collision right there before you get onto the bridge. it's affecting multiple lanes. it's been like that for the last 25 minutes or so. a live look at

the richmond. sandra fell bridge right now. 13 minute commute from tolls to 101. so not too bad, but expect those delays before you get to the actual bridge. some drive times for you this morning for those who may be heading towards the maze crockett to the maze. 26 minute commute. walnut creek to 5, 80 12 minute commute to castro valley to the maze. 16 minute commute. stanley under to the maze 14 minute commute. lastly, we'll take a look at the bay bridge this morning. it's a 15 minute commute and this metering lights are on, but i will get it to you. thank you so much, michael. and yeah, a lot of issues out there. it sounds like as you are trying to get this thursday morning started. but mother nature is not getting in the way of anything. >> if you get outside right now in san jose, this is your view. nothing but the sunshine got another warm day ahead of you in the south bay as well as for our inland areas in general cooler at the coast, a little bit of fog out that direction. that's about the only thing you've got to worry about as far as 101 goes, we are going to be seeing this. high-pressure ridge impacting us for just one more day before that low to our north comes in this place. is it and

will be looking at a chance of rain getting as much as 50 or sorry, a half an inch to an inch of rainfall here in the bay area with multiple inches of it up in the sierra nevada today, though, just the opposite. looking at daytime highs in the 60's at the coast, 70's and 80's elsewhere and nothing but that sunshine and warm weather yet again, hopefully can get outside. enjoy it because this is the last day looking at numbers like these san jose. 82 for your daytime high freeman through hayward on up through oakland and richmond each in the 70's today. well, danville through conquered pittsburgh over to antioch in the low 80's for your daytime highs this afternoon. tomorrow will already be cooling things down into the 60's at the warmest 50's by saturday showers most likely on saturday before we clear out and eventually warm things back up after that. all right, john, thank you for that for your money this morning, california is a top state for minority entrepreneurs. california has the highest gas prices in the we knew that.

on the peninsula. follow-up. the police are looking for people they say broke into the home of an elderly couple. >> in the middle of the night, police say happened sometime tuesday night at a home on ilima way just north of palo alto's va medical center. they say a couple in their 80's told police they woke up about 5.30, wednesday morning found their rear glass patio door just smashed in. they also found the side yard gate open and they don't think anything was stolen. police say suspects might have left without taking anything out. they realized they were not the only people inside the house. >> in the south bay, the silicon valley transit agency now partnering up with some south bay cities to make safer routes for students that are going to school the homestead, safe routes school project will be putting protected bike lanes, highly visible crosswalks and modifying traffic signals into place. the project spans homestead road in cupertino, south coast and sunnyvale. the project

needs to gather about 16.8 million in order to move forward once they secure that money, construction might start in twenty-twenty 6 with hopes of being finished by early 2028. well, california state employees will soon have to work at least 2 days a week in person. the newsom administration is set to require all state staff to work in the office starting on june 17th. the move comes as local city leaders across the country urging companies and governments to encourage in-person work because they've seen drastic declines and downtown businesses and high office vacancy rates. state officials say that some exceptions will be allowed on a case-by-case basis as many state departments have their own remote work policies. it's 7.26. we're going to take a break. but up next on the kron, 4 morning news and east bay donut shop targeted again. >> how the family owned businesses trying to protect themselves after being robbed 4 times less than a year. we'll be right back. we are

back 7.30, is the time. want to get back to that breaking news in the traffic center. this impacting a lot of the east bay commuters. yeah, we've actually been talking about that accident. >> it's causing quite the backup. if you are going to be traveling along 8.80. let's go to michael thomas for the latest on that. good morning, michael. >> yeah, good morning, everyone. we are dealing with a sick alert over in the east bay. it's near the san lorenzo area and i want to zoom in closer so you can see that back up. it's near the connector of to 38 northbound and 80 southbound. it's close down completely. and you can see it's really causing a lot of delays for those who are heading in from the inland area. actually have a live look right now. our

photographers there on the scene. you can see a semi actually turned over this morning. it happened at around 3 o'clock in the morning. and right now they're still trying to deal with getting all of those fluids off the actual ground. chp says that hazmat is on the way. so hopefully they will be able to clean that up soon. right now, your best bet to get back on to 80 would be to take mission boulevard. we can bring back our maps to this area. we're also dealing with another crash in this area right before you get to that actual semi that's turned over. trowbridge avenue. it's in castro valley. those lanes are currently blocked off. so keep that in mind as you're heading out this morning, that entire areas really just going to be backed up. taking a look closer to the area leading up to that area. you may just want to take 6.80, all the way around to completely avoid right. and james arellano, send it over to thanks so much, michael, for keeping us updated. all that. >> we're looking at a day today that shouldn't be adding any more complications to the commute. at least mother nature won't be.

>> as we are looking at such clear conditions out there across the bay area, a view from the east bay hills shows nothing but that sunshine in full force this morning, at least for everyone but the immediate coastline and way on to the delta and central valley, little bit of fog in both of those spots. current temperatures are mostly in the 50's alameda. 55 right now, san mateo and redwood city 54, some 40's on into the north bay. a look ahead shows temperatures right back into the low 80's this afternoon for inland areas. bayshore back into the 70's coastal spots. you'll still be hanging out in the 60's huge changes just around the corner. so it's our looking at temps like this. enjoy it. while we got him back to you. all right. thank you for that. will another open business? >> on the brink of shutting its doors? yeah. the owner of a long time live music venue says that burglaries and crime have now scared off a lot of his patrons proportionally to kyle has a story. we talked to the owner. >> in oscar edwards is 15 years running a business in

downtown oakland. he says thieves pretty much stayed away from his establishment called complex oakland. but recently he has been burglarized 3 times twice in february and they have been costly. it was like about $40,000 worth of stuff. he says it has already been referred tracking artists to perform at his live music venue or dine at his full servict restaurant on the second floor. it's a sad thing that fee what the city is becoming. edwards says he has taken steps to secure his facility and has cameras set up to keep an eye on the space. but that has seemingly only brought pain having video evidence of thieves stealing from him and getting away with it really hurts my heart because i don't want to have to leave the city. >> but bro way built something. like it's like my baby. unfortunately, edwards is running out of time feel a lot of uptick of people going to want to create. you can see people going out to more out of jose. and they're starting to come stopping coming down

downtown open. he says crime combined with the rays to minimum wage is leaving him in the red. all those businesses that you would have seen 5 years ago. they're no longer here. they're all boarded up. so it made it look bad. when i have to talk to artists, don't act in a look. they come downtown and worried about getting a car, be they're worried about, you know, the safety of downtown. and they're like, hey, you know, do i want to throw the showdown here? sadly, lately, the answer to that question is often no. >> philippe djegal all kron. 4 news. >> 73 is the time in san francisco. police have arrested a man who they say vandalized a mosque during the holy month of ramadan. apparently broke windows. and you can see that here in this video. this was at the kid. alter he'd mosque in lower hill. a member told kron 4 on april 4th that a man parked his car in front of that mosque walked over to smash windows with a skateboard shot at speech and then ran inside the mosque to drink water and

then went back out to his car. according to police, he return to that mosque yesterday evening. officers arrived and arrested. 35 year-old robert gray, the muslim community now reacting to the crime. >> it's really sad is unacceptable. i went to school at this mosque as a kid. i played almost every single payer during ramadan. >> over here. >> no mosque board members say over the past month there were other acts of vandalism. the words on this now painted wall out front reads, quote, you will all burn in and the were don't was also written at the entrance of the mosque. just terrible. >> ok, time now, 7.34 and east bay and oakland family. they're now going public and issues at their decades old donut shop. it continues to be targeted, it is. fact, colonial donuts has been robbed 4 times in less than a year. we had a chance to speak with the family about what they've been doing to try. >> and improve security. kron. 4 sarah stinson has the story.

>> colonial donuts on lakeshore avenue in oakland has been a staple for 40 years. a family business that the owner's daughter wanted to protect for decades to come. i left job. came back. >> plan and want to continue my family's legacy, but it's just it's very hard and very she's speaking out wednesday night, but wanting to keep their privacy after being robbed 4 times in less than a year. security video from march first shows 3 people entering the shop. >> just before 6 in the morning, one with a golf club in hand grabbed the register. i think i want to say they made up of like $300 in cash in the register and up is like over 1000. the shop was also robbed back in december. what is going on here in customers rallied in support of the shop and against rampant crime. the daughter says mayor sheng thao has stopped by to check in on the family and consider her to show up and, >> you know, i had told then and feel that now like. how am

i going and make our actual colonial donuts has taken several precautions to avoid being targeted by thieves. now they don't offer indoor seating and while it remains open, 24 7, the staff only serves doughnuts through a window during the overnight hours. and we're looking at probably putting it up at the actual storefront not to have a door and lock but actual she says each robbery not only threatens their livelihood but also shakes up the sense of security for the neighborhood. what is the best step that we we we can do because i don't want to live out in the wild west so much. so this woman plans to move out of oakland and, you know, like heartbreak you know, the business is getting even lies. not so. >> it's just hard to see >> and hasn't been that much change. so i'm sara stinson reporting kron. 4 news. >> where millions of muslims around the world not only for

our photographer is actually there on the scene. we're going to pull it up what it looks like. so what happened early this morning essentially is that there was a big rig that turned over. and if you look closely on the right hand side of the screen, you can actually see those tires up in the year. chp says this is probably going to be possibly an all-day thing. they're trying to clean up the flu. it's coming out of that actual big rig. so as to when it will be completely open, we're on shore. but right now, your best bet would be to get off on mission before this area where you're seeing this live picture, take mission all the way down. then get back on 2.88 eb. can see that congestion. and also in addition to that, right before you get to that congestion, there's another accident causing more delays. and this is right near strowbridge avenue in castro valley lanes are currently blocked and chp says they're working to get that out of the way as well. so keep in mind, if you're heading from the inland area over to 8.80, you're going to see those major delays right now. you see that yellow and orange. so it's starting to build up significantly. your best bet may be to take 6.80,

either north or south to get around it completely, but also over towards richmond area. we're dealing with another traffic collision. this is westbound 5.80, before you get onto that bridge east of castro street, the left lanes are currently all affected. once you get past that you actually will have a decent commute on the richmond. sandra fell bridge right now, 13 minute commute. but leading up to that, you're going to see some major delays, some traffic drive times for those who are heading out this morning towards the maze crockett to the maze. 33 minute commute. 14 minute commute. walnut creek to 5.80, castro valley to the mays. 17 minute commute, stanley and or to the mains 16 minute commute. keep in mind that castro valley commute could be a little bit longer because of those multiple delays. once you get to the bay bridge from the maze into the city is only a 16 minute commute, which is great news. taking a look over in the south bay san jose to menlo park. 52 minute commute. you can see 101 is for the most part clear. but some small congestion areas overall. lastly, san jose to
