targeted again. now in oakland, family is going public with their issues as their decades-old shop continues to be targeted by thieves. good evening, everybody. thanks for joining us tonight on kron. 4 news at 11, i'm grant lotus and i'm noelle bellow colonial donuts has been robbed 4 times in less than a year. >> kron four's sara stinson spoke with the family about the security measures they've been taking to try and avoid theft. sarah joins us live here in studio. sarah, it seems like nothing is working. >> seems to be a heavy sense of hopelessness for not only the owners of colonial donuts, but also for their customers after the shop was robbed again last month. the owners fear nothing will stop this from continuing. >> colonial donuts on lakeshore avenue in oakland has been a staple for 40 years. a family business that the owner's daughter wanted to protect for decades to come. i left job. came back. >> and i plan and want to

continue my family's legacy. but it's just it's very hard very she's speaking out wednesday night, but wanting to keep their privacy after being robbed 4 times in less than a year. security video from march first shows 3 people entering the shop just before 6 in the morning. one with a golf club in hand grabbed the register. i think i want to say they made up of like $300 in cash in the register and like over 1000 colonial donuts has taken several precautions to avoid being targeted by thieves. now they don't offer indoor seating and while it remains open, 24 7, the staff only serves doughnuts through a window during the overnight hours. and we're looking at probably putting it up at actual storefront not to have a door and lock but actual she says each robbery not only threatens their livelihood but also shakes up the sense of security for the neighborhood. what is the best step that we we we can do because i don't want to live out in the wild west so much. so this woman

plans to move out of oakland, you know, like heartbreak you know, that businesses getting allies, not so. >> it's just hard to see >> and hasn't been that much change. so. >> everyone i spoke with mentioned the new oakland police chief, all hopeful this will bring the police force more success in bringing crime down. oakland police say they are still investigating the latest robbery at the donut shop. i'm sara stinson reporting back to you. >> sarah, thank you. a live music venue in oakland is on the brink of closing as well. also because of crime, the owner of complex oakland says his business was burglarized twice in february. one of the incidents cost him 40 grand in damages and losses. he says many of his patrons are now scared to come into oakland. >> is that you would have seen 5 years ago. they're no longer here. they're all boarded up. so it made it look bad. when i have to talk to our to start act in a look, they come

downtown worry about getting a car, be it. they're worried about, you know, the safety of downtown. >> the owner says he's taken steps to secure his facility, but they haven't really been working. he also says with the raiders warriors and now the a's leaving oakland. that means fewer jobs and people making less money, which means they're less likely to spend the money they do have at a business like >> new at 11 palo alto police are looking for people who they say broke into the home of an elderly couple in the middle of the night. happened sometime tuesday night at a home on a limb away just north of palo alto va medical center. a couple in their 80's told police they woke up at about 05:30am, in the morning and found their rear glass door patio had been smashed. they say the side yard gate was open, but they don't think thing was actually taken. police believe the suspects left the home without taking anything after they realized there were people inside the house. and arrest has been

made tonight in a crash that killed a 9 year-old girl from oregon. the highway patrol announced today. 22 year-old jesus, yvonne durantez is in custody facing multiple charges. the crash was sunday morning. northbound 6.80, and the highway 2.42. split and conquered. the chp says and suv carrying 6 people left the roadway through the dirt median and overturned multiple times. 9 year-old girl died at the scene. her mom, 13 year-old sister and 2.17, year-old cousins are still being treated at the hospital. police say the driver had run off after the crash. his bail has been set at $200,000. >> where millions of muslims around the world not only forecast, not >> a dinner for graduating uc berkeley law students got heated tuesday night when a pro-palestine protest or stood

barbershops as before the pandemic, they had a bustling business on columbus avenue near the financial district will now they're trying to raise money just to survive from four's. dan thorn joins us live in san francisco. >> with more on to. >> jagr and barbershop business owner tells us that the financial district as just really had a slow bounce back and it's been hitting their business hard. she says that she and staff are only seeing about a fraction of the customers that they saw before the pandemic. and they're not sure how long they can hang on without getting some sort of help. >> barber, jorge flores cleaning up after cutting the hair of one of his few customers. the san francisco shot he works for is struggling to stay open. kind of miss how it used to be before are really popular and >> we have plenty clients situation changed right after

>> police have had their hands full with recent sideshows all across the bay area from the peninsula to the east bay, even on the bay bridge everywhere, it seems out of the hundreds of people. that's in part the sideshows over the weekend. 2 of them >> were arrested. kron four's rob nesbitt spoke with the chp to see how they are tackling the issue. chp as a proactive approach to try to see of sideshows are being planned online and a reactive approach to send officers to sideshows in progress. talk to anyone in the bay area's was witnessed a weekend sideshow, though. and they'll tell you they don't understand why officers can do more to stop the cars. >> multiple bay area cities with the same side show scenes, cars racing circles at intersections from saturday night into sunday morning. >> menlo park, palo alto mountain view oakland and lastly on the bay bridge were black marks are still visible leave skid marks that are like

almost like permanency. you see it in the roads in one s has recorded multiple sideshows over the years for the balcony of a san francisco apartment. so much so that he made the recent decision to move to mexico and only comes back to the city when he has to for work. part of the reason my left as i just can't i can't deal with us anymore. it's just the stress of, you know, of feeling like i have no control over my environment. during the weekend sideshows, chp says 2 people were arrested at the bay bridge and 2 minors were cited. officer andrew barclay with chp golden gate division says recent legislation allows officers to investigate and take later action. it doesn't have to be. we see it right there. stop them and take the vehicle. >> if we identify that vehicle, we can, you know, come in a couple weeks later without warrant and take that vehicles. officer barclay get several questions about why responding officers don't break up sideshows in progress. he says that's not always a safe option for law enforcement. very often. you're looking at. >> hundreds of people involved

in these and sending in a single officer. i can be dangerous for that officer. says police officers responding to the sideshows he's recorded state too far away to document evidence. >> wishing law enforcement would put more resources into not just responding, but also stopping the chaos in progress. i don't feel protected by chp these ways. and i don't feel like there's. >> again, like i it worries me of something bigger chp control this. what can they do? even though there were multiple sideshows around the same time in the bay area this weekend, chp is still investigating to determine if they are linked in any way reporting in san francisco. i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 news. >> tonight, rescue crews are suspending their search for the whale whose tail was caught in fishing nets. they say tomorrow there will be fog and large swells, which will make it pretty difficult for them to continue searching. >> when we are working with the whale, we just try and get as close like if this is the

above. not much in the way of fog just yet, but i think by tomorrow morning see a little more of a developing out there early on. so yeah, patchy fog developing tonight. tomorrow should be a beautiful day. lots of sunshine, a mild warm temperatures around the bay area. little cool right along the water's edge along the coastline. but this weekend, yeah, there we go. we've got that cold rain moving back in and it looks like a even a slight chance of lingering showers. we head in towards sunday right now, though, so far, so good that california into the dominant ridge of high pressure that ridge can boost of moisture to the north and do so for one more day after that, everything begins to change. but so far, not much in the way and win category most. that more of a northerly wind. you can see right there, even in the san francisco that's keeping most of fog way there. but eventually that sea breeze starts to kick in overnight tonight. and a couple of patches of aog on things will be widespread but likely some fog in the morning tomorrow morning and then looks like as we head through the day, not a bad day. you can see a lot of sunshine and another day with some warm temperatures running up in the 70's and some 80's again in some of the valleys, the santa clara valley. but

then, yeah, everything changes. the storm system rolls down the coastline and there you go. things be in the cloud up as we head into our friday. and then as we look into saturday, there it is. that storm rolling on in bringing that rain. more of that on the way. so yeah, tomorrow, enjoy the day should be a nice day. but we are going to see more rain moving in the bay area as we head into the weekend. a look at that change 80's to 50's in the warmer spots by saturday. even a chance of a thunderstorm, maybe a couple of snowflakes across our highest peaks. little whiplash. that's a crazy. i mean, next week, we're back to some really nice weather again. so it's just unfortunate coming what people want to get out and enjoy. here comes the stormy weather. well, we'll take we'll take it. i guess what? we have no choice, right? thanks. thanks. san francisco mayor london breed is getting ready for big trip to china last year. china's president xi invited mayor breed, come out and visit this country. and on saturday, the mayor along with a delegation from san

francisco's asian and pacific islander communities will kick off a multi-city tour of china. they plan to meet with business leaders. government officials, university leaders, airport executives, all. >> in effort to improve relations and attract business. >> our goal is to, you know, enter into major agreement to make san francisco significant to china and to let them know that we're open the business relationship that could be developed as a result. >> people have money to spend. the mayor says she's hoping to e>courage that tourism in 2023. visitors from china spent more than 660 million dollars in san francisco in the bay area. that's according to the mayor's office. mayor breed will be in china for one week. >> a new skate park is now open in american canyon. it's veterans memorial park. it's situated behind american canyon middle school and philip west aquatic center.
