>> from the bay area's local news station. you're watching kron. 4 news at 6. >> now at 60, hp says it plans to crack down on sideshows after several break out across the bay area over the weekend. good evening, everybody. i'm vicki liviakis. i'm ken wayne. those sideshows spread from the peninsula to the east bay. >> even on the bay bridge shot of the hundreds who took part of the sideshows over the weekend. 2 people were

arrested. kron four's rob nesbitt talked with the chp about how they are tackling this issue. that just doesn't seem to go away from. ken. and vicki chp says they have a proactive approach to see the planning of sideshows online and a reactive approac to send officers to them in progress. >> talk to anyone in the bay area, though, who has witnessed a weekend sideshow and they'll tell you they don't understand what officers can't do more to stop the cars. >> multiple bay area cities with the same side show scenes, cars racing circles at intersections from saturday night into sunday morning. >> menlo park, palo alto mountain view oakland and lastly on the bay bridge were black marks are still visible leave skid marks that are like almost like permanency. you see it in the roads in one s has recorded multiple sideshows over the years for the balcony of a san francisco apartment. so much so that he made the recent decision to move to mexico and only comes

back to the city when he has to for work. part of the reason my left as i just can't i can't deal with us anymore. it's just the stress of, you know, a feeling like i have no control over my environment. during the weekend sideshows, chp says 2 people were arrested at the bay bridge and 2 minors were cited. officer andrew barclay with chp golden gate division says recent legislation allows officers to investigate and take later action. it doesn't have to be. we see it right there. stop them and take the vehicle. >> if we identify that vehicle, we can, you know, come in a couple weeks later without warrant and take that vehicles. officer barclay get several questions about why responding officers don't break up sideshows in progress. he says that's not always a safe option for law enforcement. very often. you're looking at. >> hundreds of people involved in these and sending in a single officer. i can be dangerous for that officer. says police officers responding to the sideshows he's recorded, stay too far away to document evidence. >> wishing law enforcement

would put more resources into not just responding, but also stopping the chaos in progress. i don't feel protected by chp these ways. and i don't feel like there's. >> again, like i it worries me of something bigger the chp control this. what can they do? >> even though there were multiple sideshows over the weekend around the same time, chp is still investigating to determine if they are linked in any way. reporting live in san francisco. i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 news. thank you, rob. take a good look at your screen. police are looking for another person they say might be linked to those fires that were set at san jose state university. cal fire officials say those happened on march 31st and april 8th into restrooms in the martin luther king library on campus. nobody was hurt yesterday. officials sent out this picture of another person they say was linked to a fire that was set on march 31st on the campus, although it's unclear where that fire took place. anyone

who has any information about these incidents is asked to call san jose state university police. 13 people have died in car crashes so far this year in san whole day with the most recent one being reported. >> just yesterday, it is an issue. city leaders and lawmakers have tried to fix blaming san jose's wide roads and speeding. >> kron four's jack moment joins us now after talking with safe streets, advocates and the mayor about what's next. jack. well, ken and vicki, 13 people may not sound like that. shocking of a number. but right now the number of people being killed in car crashes is outpacing the number of homicides. >> in san jose this year. now the mayor told me there have been improvements made in recent years, but advocates say they want the city to commit even more improvements in this year's budget. >> from a fatal crash on monterey road in january. to a man who spent months trying to recover but ultimately died in april after he was hit by a car off mckee wrote, we do

everything right. >> we follow all the rules we wear bright clothing. and still we have a lot of those calls. >> max siegel is with families for safe streets and says he's worried for his kids when walking to school, close call can be. >> not paying attention to intersection. san jose keeps track of car crashes on a public database so far this year we have seen twice as many fatal car crashes compared to just this time last year. so many of through ways that run through san jose rack up quite a few deaths from bad data set. but none may be more dangerous that monterey road, which between 2018, 2023 logged 6 teen road fatalities here. when we most awesome and get it right now that we're talking a max off the corner of monterey and tully and has shot. >> cars driving into the bike lane. they're supposed to be separated by these posts. you work towards. >> designing our streets, holistically. >> the public data does show san jose's years long campaign to improve its streets like

installing those bike lane markers and transforming final 3 ways in the suburbs like brenham lane, which used to have 6 lanes now for and better protected bike lanes. one death one too many when it comes to our roadways, people should feel safe. san jose mayor matt mahan says the projects are improving streets slowly, but surely infrastructure projects are expensive and then the staff and actually carry them out there says he wants to hire more police officers, 4 enforcement and even the potential addition of security camera automatically issue first a warning. and then after the first 6 months a ticket, max says the city should not only focus on police staffing, but the design of the roads themselves. and so we need again to have a design, a design, our streets. >> that encourages people and forces people to behave better. >> now there is some funding meant to improve can road that's in east side. san jose and another statistically dangerous road in the city of meantime, the mayor says those security cameras could be added into the budget the

summer if city council approves it and would start with around 30 cameras mostly around school zones. jack moment, kron 4 news. jack, thank you very much. here we go again. yet more developments in the race to replace an issue in congress. >> recent vote counts leading to that unprecedented two-way tie for second place meant thot joe submitting in and evan low would both be joining sam liccardo on the november ballot. but now there are 2 separate request for a recount problem for risk afternoon. and in our newsroom with the latest, catherine. yeah, if you thought that maybe we were done with this little drama for a while, can. >> you're on a recount has been requested a fact which could break the historic tie between assemblyman evan low and santa clara county supervisor. joe submit ian and not everyone is happy about it. >> it seemed both evan low and show some of the in were willing to accept the recent surprising news of a two-way tie. their teams not talking

about an expensive recount. former san jose mayor sam liccardo is already safely in first place. now santa clara county officials tell me they are being asked to do a manual recount, something that could begin as soon as monday. the approximate cost $32,000 a day lasting, maybe 10 days. so. >> who's asking for there's an allegation that one of the people requesting the recount associated with ricardo who actually would benefit from having a 2 person race for 3 person race. it's much easier. i do raise money. it's much easier draw contrasts. >> the name on the recount petition is a former staffer for sam liccardo name jonathan padilla. but look, camp is not confirming that only saying the final count needs to be accurate. meantime, a very angry reaction from evan los campaign. the statement from his spokesperson, this is a page right out of trump's

political playbook using dirty tricks to attack democracy and subvert the will of voters. sam liccardo, who does not live in this district, did not file a recount himself. instead, he had his former staffer do it for him. what's he afraid of? think antidemocratic at all. >> to ask ask for a recount in and in a lot of races and there are mandatory recount like a presidential and no one is knowing squawks about anti democratic. >> also weighing in south bay, congressman roe conn who said in a post on x, a candidate wanting to overturn the will of the voters is undemocratic. sam liccardo supporters should not push for a recount asking to overturn election results and district 16 when all other candidates have accepted them.

>> in san francisco, police are searching for a man they say vandalized a mosque with a skateboard. this as the muslim community wraps up their celebration of ramadan. our first gayle ong has details. >> broken windows could be seen at a scout or heat mosque in san francisco, a member tells kron 4 off camera on april 4th, a man parked his car in front of the mosque located on sutter street between polk and van ness. the member says the man walked over to smash a window with a skateboard, then walked to the other side of the entrance to break another window. the suspect shouted islamophobic rhetoric and ran inside the mosque to drink water and then went back to his car. the member called 9-1-1. the incident was caught on surveillance video that was

given to police on tuesday. the same suspect was seen outside the mosque but did not cause any damage this comes as the muslim community has been celebrating ramadan. it's really sad is unacceptable. a seal is a san francisco immigrant rights commissioner and has close ties with this mosque. i went to school at this mosque as a kid. i played almost every single payer. >> during ramadan. >> over here, mosque board members say over the past month there have been other acts of vandalism. the words on this now painted wall out front, read, quote, you will all burn in and the other were don't has been written at the entrance of the mosque. that attack on one of us is an attack on all of us and that we are a united front and >> just cannot be condoned and we're peaceful people. and we just want to live in harmony with everyone else. >> a statement from the san francisco bay area office of the council on american islamic relations reads in part, quote, during this

period of high in unprecedented islamophobia, we urge mosque leaders to take extra precautions to protect their attendees and elected officials and civic leaders to take heed of how israeli violence palestine is having an impact here at home. on wednesday, prayers continued at the mosque as members celebrate the end of their holy month. police are investigating the incidents and have the suspect's license plate number. anyone with information is asked to call san francisco police gayle ong kron. 4 news. >> 7 people were caught trying to steal a car by a police officer. know the oakland hills. it happened yesterday morning. police say the suspects drove off in another car when they saw the officer later, the officer found the car and when he approached the suspects ran off several police officers on the ground and in the air help in finding and detaining all 7 suspects. >> more than 400 cars recovered in nearly 200 people arrested in the east bay. more

specifically oakland. the governor newsom says that this happened in a 2 month long targeted operation by the chp. he says officers also took up. 31 guns linked to crimes. the governor credits the increased presence of chp officers that have been working with local law enforcement ever since february. >> now to our 4 zone forecast as we step outside to be a nice view of the golden gate bridge. looks some mist hanging in the air from the pacific. bring could that be an indication higher precipitation? not lauren yet? yeah, not just yet. we're still enjoy that nice weather outside. but could mean a little fog going to form, though, overnight tonight. >> and tomorrow morning we had a couple of patches that least along the coastline today. pretty thick up toward the beaches, but managed squeeze a little sunshine to it. now working on what looks like a glorious evening out there. beautiful sunshine around the bay area. nice evening. get out there and enjoy it while beautiful out there along the coastline today and all the valleys to still, yeah, everything is blooming out there right to get the warm

sunshine after the rain. so pollen count is running high as we look toward tomorrow. begin to back off a little bit on friday, then looking lower as we head in towards saturday and sunday. that will correspond with a couple of days. a very cold weather and maybe even some showers in the bay area. then we start to watch a the pollen count, march up the board again, starting on monday. but the pacific remaining very active, even though we've got ridge of high pressure overhead has brought us a couple of beautiful days. eventually one of these storms going to punch through from the gulf of alaska. yeah. bring another round of rain in the bay area starting on friday night and continuing into saturday, too. so let's enjoy our day in the sunshine again tomorrow. see a lot of it as high pressure builds overhead. that will bring with a pleasant sunshine. the temperatures a little cool on the coastline with a bit of a breeze and maybe some fog there otherwise should be warm inside the bay and the valleys to, in fact, looking good out there. but watch what happens here as we take you through time tomorrow. looks like a great day. lots of sunshine throughout the day. just a couple of patches of fog. then we get to friday. things begin to change. clouds begin to roll in. storm system holds off and then that storm rolls

on in as we head into the weekend. so looks like those showers rolling on in more showers on the way as we head in toward least saturday, maybe into sunday to looks like we're going to see a change in the pattern as we get into next week. but this weekend, drastic drop in temperatures. maybe 2025 degrees colder. maybe some more snow flakes over variously. i do not area mountain, maybe bay to maybe like mount hamilton, not like this last weekend, but still that's impressive for this time of year. sure it is. yeah. all right. thanks, lauren. welcome. another open business is on the brink. the owner of a long time live music venue downtown says of burglaries in crime of just >> scared people away. kron four's philippe journal reports the owner will likely have to close his doors for good. >> in oscar edwards is 15 years running a business in downtown oakland. he says thieves pretty much stayed away from his establishment called complex oakland. but recently he has been burglarized 3 times twice in february and they have been

costly. it was like about $40,000 worth of stuff. he says it has already been referred tracking artists to perform at his live music venue or dine at his full service restaurant on the second floor. thing that fee, what city is becoming, edwards says he has taken steps to secure his facility and has cameras set up to keep an eye on the space. but that has seemingly only brought pain having video evidence of thieves stealing from him and getting away with it really hurts my heart because i don't want to have to leave the city. >> roll with it. built something. like it's like my baby. unfortunately, edwards is running out of time feel a lot of uptick of people going to want to create. you can see people going out to more out of san jose. and they're stopping to come stopping coming down downtown open. he says crime combined with the rays to minimum wage is leaving him in the red. all those businesses that you would a theme 5 years ago. they're no longer here. they're all boarded up. so it
