>> yeah. both san francisco officials and people flying out of the oakland airport say they're both confused and surprised that the port of oakland is pushing for this name change, especially after san francisco warned about a possible lawsuit. if it goes forward. >> at the oakland airport on monday night. rumblings could be heard about the airport, possibly getting a new name. san francisco bay, oakland international airport. i think it's ridiculous. the port of oakland manages the airport and first proposed the name change late march. the port president says this will boost travelers, geographic awareness of where the airport is located. but people flying in and out of the airport say this would only make things more confusing. i think oakland should have oakland airport. and francisco should have some francisco.

>> and the star of going to different cities. so that's where oakland mayor sheng thao has said the new name could support the airport's efforts to secure more direct flights and boost tourism in oakland. but across the bay, san francisco mayoral candidate and supervisor ahsha suffice as the name change would hurt sf our economy is beginning to come back in terms of >> what it means to invest in travel. visit san francisco. the airport is a major part of that. we don't want any confusion. so we're going to do everything we can to protect our brand. protect our airport ahead of the port commission scheduled vote on thursday. san francisco city attorney david chiu center letter threatening legal action if they go through with it too, says the proposed name infringes supposed trademark. >> their proposal here's intentionally designed to divert travelers. you may be unfamiliar with area. geography. we believe that the clear similarity and a very

high likelihood of confusion gives us a strong federal trademark infringement in response to the possible lawsuit. the oakland airport released a statement saying in part the proposed name modification will clarify, not confuse the new name identifies where the airport is actually located. >> it also added that once the board approves the name change, the port will take appropriate measures to use the new name. >> city attorney chu hopes to speak with port officials before that vote on thursday. but if it gets approved, he says they're more than ready to move forward with legal action. i'm sara stinson reporting live at the oakland airport. back to you. >> thank you, sara. a san francisco deputy sheriff has been charged with domestic violence according to court records. jonathan, a spirit who strangled his girlfriend at home last august and then attacked her at work in december, a spirit who pleaded

not guilty to all charges. prosecutors say they're keeping him in custody because he poses a public safety risk. take a look at the smoke coming from inside the posey tube earlier today after a car caught on fire. >> while inside crews from alameda and oakland both responding to the scene around 07:30pm, tonight working together to put out those flames while evacuating drivers from the tunnel. posey tube was closed for about an hour. firefighters did not say if anyone was injured. >> francisco mayor london breed is advocating for the city's downtown recovery at the state capitol. she voiced her support today for 3 state bills. the measures aimed to provide the city with a set of creative solutions to build on local efforts to revamp the area. mayor breed also talked about the work that her office is done so far to revitalize downtown san francisco. >> 2023, we saw one of the lowest crime rates we've seen

the beta show you how quick numbers are jumping. why with the dry air in place? that's why we'll see the numbers jumped quickly to 70 or so by noon and into the middle 70's with some even lower 80's in the well inland reaches. all have more on that extended forecast a bit. thank all right, dave, a woman and child are in critical condition that. >> at hospital tonight following a crash, san jose police first responding to that crash near monterey road and metcalf road shortly after 1 o'clock this afternoon officers blocked off southbound monterey road for few hours following the accident. the cause of the crash is under investigation. oakland police are looking for the driver who hit and killed a pedestrian overnight. it happened just early this morning in the area of 75th in san leandro street near the coliseum. bart station police have not identified the victim yet. anyone with information is being asked to contact oakland police. >> new at 10, the latest on a

disturbing case out of the south bay where 3 family members are in jail after a 3 year-old was killed. during what the suspects say was an exorcism. newly-released documents revealed the child fought for her life and tried to escape from a church where her mother, uncle and grandfather allegedly performed the exorcism back in 2021. investigators say the girl's body had several injuries when firefighters found her body on the altar of the church in downtown san jose. a coroner determined she died from a combination of us 60, a and smothering court documents also revealing today the victim's mother told police she had visions from god, our local claiming he had gifts from god. while the grandfather says he had gone to the church to pray for the child and believed the girl's mother. the 3 have pleaded not guilty. they're set to return to court next month. the breeze is all that's left in a crash at 6.80, near concord that left a

>> life of the 9 year-old took the life of that girl early sunday. her mother, 13 year-old sister and 2.17, year-old cousins were also in the suv. they were taken to the hospital. they are expected to survive. investigators say, but they're still working with family members to determine their relationships to the man who was driving that suv. and then ran away from the crash site. it's not clear if drugs or alcohol played a factor. >> but a little police say they issued more than 20 citations within 10 hours to distracted drivers over the weekend. they say officers made 49 traffic stops on friday during a special operation targeting drivers, distracted by their phones. they say they will continue looking for distracted drivers through this wednesday. >> happening tomorrow, san jose leaders are set to vote on whether to ban homeless encampments around schools. if approved, it would prevent the unhoused and their rv's from parking within 150 feet of

most campuses. local officials including mayor matt mahan support that proposal. that's after students at one east. san jose school say that they're being in at least one case followed by homeless people living near campus. critics of the proposal argue the measure criminalizes the homeless. >> santa clara county leaders say some low-income residents are losing their medical benefits. the county says from june 2023, to this january medical members dropped from 458,000 to 425,000 health advocates say the decline is due to people having to reapply for those benefits. again, now that the pandemic has officially ended, which meant the county needed to determine if people were still eligible. however, the social security administration says it could also be due to residents applying for a covered california plan instead of the medical plan. >> a group holding a rally to support the lgbtq+ community

outside the state capitol today. the non-profit equality, california honored lawmakers who have a history of supporting the community. the group hopes california can be a beacon of hope for the rest of the country. >> it shows the evolution of lgbtq you know, you really see folks all across the state as folks. can you to tell come out and tell their stories really showing, you know, that lgbtq issues are a bipartisan issue. >> the group says the rallies in response to an uptick in attacks on the lgbtq+ community still ahead. well, the momentum keeps building around the a's. big move. we hear from sacramento and las vegas residents about the open team. >> moving to their cities. >> plus, millions of people have their eyes to the sky this afternoon across the united states for that total eclipse. the major economic boost. this is a once in a generation phenomenon brought to cities along the path of totality. who might be throwing a lifeline to the $0.99 only store just days

>> 10 2 suspects in the north bay are arrested for running a chop shop. detectives say the suspects were altering stolen cars out of an unlicensed vehicle repair shop in santa rosa. they say that they found 7 stolen cars and several others that were in the process of being repaired. >> a man in san mateo was arrested after leading police on a chase that ended with a rollover crash. san mateo police arrested a retail theft suspect accused of stealing more than $1000 in merchandise

from a ross store. police say it happened saturday afternoon after the man was threatening to pepper spray or ross employee. they say the suspect then took off in his car and when police tried to pull him over on highway 2. he crashed with a guardrail causing his vehicle to rollover. he was taken to the hospital for treatment and later arrested. >> well, people living near the temporary stadium in sacramento are pondering what life is going to be like when the team moved there next year. the likely we're going to play about 80 home games at center health park before moving on to las vegas. now, many people living in sacramento area looking forward to it. >> i'm a baseball fan. so i think it's really cool to have like a major team like playing right there brings jobs. brings. >> business outside of the normal parking and things like that. no concerns. >> one neighbor who didn't want to go on camera told our

sacramento sister station that her boyfriend, a diehard a's fan. he's very upset. the a's are moving across the street from his apartment. well, they build a stadium in vegas. he like many other a's fans. just wants the team to stay in oakland. well, lawmakers in nevada seem happy to fork over 380 million dollars in public money to help the a's owner john fisher bill, that new stadium, new poll finds a majority of voters in las vegas. not so into it. kron four's dan kerman reports. >> last week the a's were celebrating moving to a minor league ballpark in sacramento for 3 years until the new las vegas stadium is built. the nevada legislature is already shelled out 380 million dollars in public funds to help build that stadium. but a new poll finds residents of las vegas opposed using public money. the emerson college polling survey asked 500 likely las vegas voters. do you support or oppose the use of public money going towards

the construction of a baseball stadium for the las vegas a's. well, almost 32% supported public funding. nearly 52% opposed it. and more than 16% remain unsure. >> everyone but nevada, politicians and the stadium authority seem to see through this john fisher scam that he's got going on. alexander marks is with the nevada state education associations, schools over stadiums campaign, which is trying to stop the public funding of that las vegas stadium. well, those surveyed live in the city of las vegas seen here in yellow, not along the part of the strip with the ballpark will be built marks thinks the poll results are significant. billionaires like john fisher don't want this on the ballot. they know that if this is on the ballot, they're going to probably we just saw what happened in jackson county, missouri last week. we saw the polling they can read the tea leaves like everybody else. it's still unclear if nevada voters will get a say in the public funding question. on tuesday, the nevada supreme court will rule as to whether schools over stadiums can move

ahead and collect signatures for the ballot measure to put the question on the november ballot marks remains optimistic at the end of the day, public money should not be going to billionaires for stadium. public funds should be on the public schools or other essential services. you know, we we keep saying there's been more planning of a world-class stadium. there has been a world-class education system. we've got all these bills that didn't get hurt or like universal school lunches or reducing class sizes. and then our legislature gets focused on this new shiny object for john fisher because he asked them for money and they said, ok, how much? meanwhile, teachers have been saying we love a 20% salary increase and they said, well, it's expensive. we can't afford that. dan kerman kron, 4 news. >> time now to get you a check of your 4 zone forecast. taking a live look at downtown san francisco after a pretty rgeous day out there. you know, and i went outside. it's a nice night as well. kron

dave spahr joining us with a look ahead. okay. we've got some dry air settling we'll get to some cool temperatures by tomorrow morning. and temperatures actually go a little bit of a free fall and then tomorrow climbing nice and quickly, which is what we used to get with dry air. here's the scene right now at sfo. looking pretty good for tonight. there were just some minor delays because of construction and all of that. >> high pressure, though, is going to be the star of the show for the next several days. so warming we will go. walter also turn off some of those surface winds a little bit as well. here's a look at those surface winds. we lost our daytime heating so we don't have as much going on mostly single digits to come, although little bit more aggressive here. you can see towards the coast to 13 tonight, maybe a few little scattered clouds around the bay by tomorrow morning. we're a fi 50 san francisco, 50 for oakland and 52. meanwhile, 4 san jose futurecast for relatively uneventful in the short term period. say 48 hours or so again tomorrow morning might have some bay area clouds and all that looks pretty good for your tuesday. but then as we get to tuesday night into wednesday, maybe

some high clouds start to maybe clearing a little bit on thursday. the real show, though, happens as we get into the weekend. look ahead of the game plan here tonight. again, a few scattered clouds going on late tonight by tomorrow morning. lows will settle around the mid 40's and some of those inland spots. now not around the immediate bay, but tuesday into wednesday. again, noting some of those high clouds may be clearing out a little bit on thursday, but a nice bump in those temperatures. lower 80's. it looks like then we get into late in the week. cooling again and maybe introducing some showers unsettled. we'll call it into the weekend. we'll take a look at that and your 4 zone forecast a bit thinking. all right, president biden says his administration is inching closer to finalizing a plan. >> to provide student debt relief to millions of americans. our washington correspondent raquel martin explains. >> the white house as early as this fall, millions of americans will begin to see the amount of reduce. they say

>> welcome back. california is being sued by a berkeley nonprofit over vote by mail. the group says voting by mail discriminates against blind voters. the suits allege the program is discriminatory because it requires people who are blind to rely on assistance to return their ballots, compromising the privacy and independence of their votes. the group is asking california to give voters with print disabilities. the option to electronically return their mail-in ballots. the suit will go before a judge in san francisco next month. newly released data shows how cargo ships in the san francisco bay are starting to protect whales. according to a >> marine conservation program. 33 shipping companies

>> our top story this half-hour, tesla battling 2 court cases in the south bay this week, the company decided to settle one this morning. a family was suing the company accusing its autopilot feature of malfunctioning. >> and killing a man in mountain view. that crash happened back in 2018. >> on investigators say that the driver was playing video games on his phone. well, using tesla's autopilot feature the investigation also determined the auto pilot system did not recognize h lane change on the highway. tesla has long said its feature does not prevent all accidents. no word on how much money tesla settling for, but both sides of the case will be back in court this thursday to discuss the settlement further. meantime, another court case involving tesla will be heard tomorrow. this one involving a family. >> whose 2 year-old son crashed a tesla into his pregnant mother back in 2018. lawsuit is accusing tesla of

consumer fraud for advertising. the model x a safe also claims tesla knew about a defective design. tesla has denied any liability. >> happening now, firefighters in hayward are tackling a fire on trip all the way just off his berrien boulevard. this said video posted on citizen app that shows flames shooting out of the building. there. we will certainly keep you updated as we learn more. california school superintendent trying to crack down on hate incidents at schools urging support for 3 bills that will help create the department of education's own office of civil rights. he says that office will establish policies limiting social media use on campus along with others, aim to educate staff on sensitive issues. the leader who is responsible for the education of more than 6 million children says that there's just too many stories about students facing hate on campus. >> when something happens, even if it's awkward or uncomfortable that must be

addressed. no room for we want to address anti-semitism islamophobia. any kind of hey, you know, black, white, racism, whatever it is. we want to address it. well, so far. >> the bills have no formal opposition. >> a bay area lawmaker is introducing a bill targeting ticketmaster oakland assembly member, buffy wicks introducing that bill today it would stop what she calls ticketmaster's monopoly in the sales market. wicks says the company handles the ticketing and pricing for a vast majority of major concerts and sporting events shows her bill would require more competition giving event goers more options to buy tickets while saving on fees. wicks says she believes this would lead to lower prices and better customer service. >> it's pretty fundamental. i mean, it's a basic premise of capitalism. so when you have more competition, you have a better product, right? and that is the foundational to to our side here. so ensuring that we have that competition, the primary point of sale to

stores open, at least in some parts of california. a group of investors led by the former president of big lots is attempting to acquire more than 140 locations in southern california. this comes after $0.99 only announced last week that all its locations are going to be shutting down. now that successful, the investors hope to reopen the stores 90 days after the going out of business sales. >> the price of avoiding long airport lines is going up. the global entry program gives users faster clearance when entering the country and lets them use faster lanes at security checkpoints. costs will go up from 100 to $120 starting october. 1st, customs and border control officials say the price is not changed in 15 years. and this new fee better reflects the program cost. >> all right. time now for the 4 zone forecast as we get a live look out there at sfo. lot of people out there traveling.

>> definitely. i don't know why we've had have great weather here. so people are coming in to enjoy the bay area. weather dave spahr is here with the details of what we can expect this weekend and that will this week. it looks like as we push those temperatures inland into the lower 80's by midweek. however, if they're hanging around for a week, it looks like this weekend. we'll be ushering in some instability. well, here you have an sfo looking pretty good on that shot. meanwhile, here's the wake-up forecast. you can expect 10:00am still a little chilly well inland with upper 40's at work there. dry air, though. we'll keep that movement. we'll see a lot of movement rather near about 70 or so come noon and into the mid afternoon. lot of mid 70's that work well inland. meanwhile, some lower 70's at the bay and 62. meanwhile at the coast, winds not going much at all. >> kind of variable. you can see single digits to come, although a little bit more active off towards the coast. we don't see a lot of cloud cover development for tonight. maybe tomorrow morning, maybe some bay clouds, but that will kind of mix out quickly as the sun joins us. however, above us. so to get into wednesday, might have some high cloudiness and there and

francisco will keep into the lower to middle 60's off towards the coast scratch and some 70's off to the bay side. looks like 72 foster city, san carlos. 74 75 for palo alto in the south bay, upper 70's with the east bay shoreline in the middle 70's territory, tri valley, upper 70's would be impossible cna scratch here. there are 78 for concord. 72 going on for richmond. 71 balais 77 fairfield is a 79 for pittsburgh. 74 for a nap and 78 for santa rosa. let's check out the 10. a 10 and you see the nice warm up going on t to about the lower 80's wednesday thursday. there is the instability on saturday with some showers, maybe lingering on sunday to and being that. it's a cold core low might have some instability with all of that, too. so >> we can deal with out as long as there's sunshine on the other end. yeah. i mean, there will looks like, but it's on the work week. yeah. what i'm saying? saturday yeah. >> but are falling. haha.

well, maybe it will lk. that's it's always craft thanks >> well, that was a look at just some of the people who gathered on the embarcadero this afternoon to try and get a glimpse of the eclipse the bay area wasn't exactoy in the path of totality, but you still could see the moon, you know, blocking part of the sun. there across the u.s. pair of solar-viewing glasses. there were more than 1400 cities and towns in the path of totality for today's solar eclipse. and it's estimated that's more more than 4 million people travel to one of those cities. one of those

cities course is a real part of the state of maine, which just so happens to be kron four's. rob nesbitt, its hometown. >> and a solar eclipse came with a lot of anticipation. millions of people in the united states excited for this rare moment of darkness. the best viewing was in the path of totality starting in texas and running 2200 miles to my hometown of hoxton main hi mom. i were like so many others, my family turned the eclipse into a family viewing party, seeing the skyline change from day to night and back today and a matter of minutes for my 3 year-old nephew. will that cool? yes. to my 91 year-old grammy j mall with a light around 10 miles from there in houlton, maine, the population more than doubled overnight with tours traveling for the best view of the dark sky. >> a cloudy forecast for other parts of the country. rerouted eclipse watchers to northern maine airport was really wild. the busy we had to be a 10, 10 jets to flow in.

>> people that had been planning on going to texas and and and and redid their flight plans and came up here stead executive director for the greater hope. the chamber of commerce, jane torres spent more than 2 years planning for the solar eclipse. a full week events for locals and visitors leading up to the moon's big move in a big boost to the local economy. all the hotels are full the airbnbs are full. >> and the restaurant that's packed to capacity. the solar eclipse may have only lasted a few minutes. the small towns like we're i grew up hoping the once in a lifetime celestial event will be long lasting impression on eclipse enthusiasts. so >> thankful to be here that think i think accomplished our mission to get people to come back to see us again. >> solar eclipses are rare and the next one in the u.s. won't happen for another 20 years. that's going to happen on august 23rd of 2044, it will be visible from the state of montana, south dakota and north dakota reporting in san francisco. i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 news.
