news. multiple sideshows plagued the bay area over the weekend as people over the streets doing donuts and one that shut down part of the bridge. and a man helped save another man from a home that caught fire on treasure island. we'll talk more about that. and in just a few hours, millions of people across the world are we looking to the sky? we're chance to see the 2024 total solar eclipse. >> from the area's local news station, you're watching the kron. 4 morning news all. well, good monday morning thank you for waking up with this one early to the kron. 4 morning news. >> here on april 8th, i'm reyna harvey. we have so much to get to today. the solar eclipse is going to be one for the books. now, a lot of folks talking about that, john. and it seems like we clear skies. we sure i'm so excited for rain forecast for us is looking great. >> i'm going to be covering it a lot today, but you're going

to see a lot of spots that are in that path of totality. unfortunately, looking at some cloud cover for them for us as we get our partial eclipse, it is going to be optimal eclipse viewing couldn't be better for us. in fact, we're looking at golden gate bridge here under some clear skies this morning. the skies are going to stay clear throughout the course of the day. as you can see in future cast as we work our way through the morning, there is no fog, no cloud cover again. like i said, things could not be better out there. and as we work our way, just past 11:00am when we see the eclipse is going to be much the same. now, current temperatures that back to that temperatures are currently in the 40's to low 50's alameda and san francisco at 51 degrees. nevado sitting at 52 berkeley. you're at 49 right livermore one of our coldest spots sitting at 39 degrees. so definitely a wide range of temperatures. some of us in the 50's, some of the 30's this morning. this afternoon, though it will be 60's to 70's plenty of sunshine. definitely a good day to get out there.

whether it's for the eclipse viewing, whatever else you may want to get up to. as for your roads this morning, we had earlier issue at the bay bridge that did have the right lane blocked. but that has been cleared out. now your drive time is pretty typical. 8 minutes to get you across the span. san mateo bridge at 12 minutes to make your crossing nothing holding you up there. richmond center fell as well as the golden gate. also looking crystal clear on this eclipse monday, right? okay. so you're looking at one of the many sideshows that took over the streets across the bay area this weekend. this one happened on the bay bridge. >> and resulted in 2 people being arrested. sara stinson walks us through what happened at each of the sideshows. >> a spree of sideshows across the bay area cause widespread disruption and chaos. the first began at 11 saturday night in menlo park. police

say more than 100 cars blocked the intersection of willow road and new bridge street. they say around 200 people gathered there to watch cars to doughnuts. it escalated when police responded. people begin kicking and jumping on the hood of an officer's patrol car has more officers responded. the crowd left the area. no one was injured and no arrests were made. another sideshow could be seen around 30 minutes later by stanford in palo alto. dozens of people watched as cars took over the intersection of coyote hill and page mill roads. police have not confirmed if any arrests were made. illegal sideshow. activity also happened in mountain view just after midnight sunday on avenue. >> police responded quickly which broke up the sideshow. police say 20 year-old woman from pittsburgh hurt her ankle after she was struck by a car. no arrests reported. police in

oakland responded to 2 sideshows. the first happened just after 2 in the morning. there was one sideshow on international boulevard people set off fireworks as well. officers then responded to another around to 45 in the morning on park boulevard. police say when they arrived, everyone took off. no arrests were made. the last reported sideshow in the bay area involved more than 100 cars blocking the westbound lanes of the bay bridge. chp says this was just before treasure island around 3 in the morning. all westbound traffic came to a halt as people ignited fireworks and watch cars do donuts. a chp officers arrived. the crowd got into cars and drove off. >> chp says they detained 4 people, 2 of which were arrested and their cars towed. the 2 others are minors. they were cited. i'm sara stinson reporting kron. 4 news. >> well, in the east bay, a rollover crash killed a 9 year-old girl and so for other

people to the hospital. so this happened around 5.15, yesterday morning right near concord. chp says the driver of the mazda cx 9 was speeding when they would write off the road right near northbound 6.80, and highway to 42. investigators say 6 passengers were inside when the suv flipped several times. some of those passengers were ejected from the car. they say a 9 year-old girl died at the scene. 4 women at to be taken to the hospital. well, police say the driver ran away from the crash and he has not been found. all the peninsula. san mateo county sheriff's transit police bureau investigated a deadly crash involving a person and a caltrain. it happened around midnight on saturday in san carlos. they say a test train on the southbound track hits a mom who was on the tracks for unknown reasons. situation remains under investigation. the identity of that victim has not been released. well in the south bay, santa clara

county district attorney jeff rosen wants to eliminate the county's death row. so he's looking instead into re-sentencing the 15 men that are now on death row to life in prison without the possibility of parole. frozen called death row a quote and the queen racially biased error-prone system. he says it also cost the state millions of public dollars. 650 people currently sit on death row in california. that's actually the highest amount we have in the country. so in 2019, governor gavin newsom placed a moratorium on executions, states working to inmates out of san quentin's death row and into other facilities. developing news, we're getting details about a fire. this happened on treasure island. this is at a home. this happened about 7.40, friday night. san francisco fire crews say it was supposed to be vacant. they actually got evidence of squatting in hardin, ben ray as lives right across the street. he happens to be a certified lifeguard.

gonna shake up just before noon on saturday. a 3.2 earthquake shook the city of berkeley and much of the bay area just after 11 on saturday. so the epicenter was right near claremont canyon, united states geological survey said the quake ran 5.8 miles deep. we don't have any reports of any damaged in the area, but lot of people are talking about it. and there's been a lot of shifting and shaking around the world since last week. well, there's rob nesbitt talk to doctor bob de groot from the u.s. geological survey for an additional perspective. i want to experience its biggest earthquake in a quarter of a century last week. so berkeley, new jersey, taiwan, is this rare to have so many around the same time span globally. >> there are earthquakes going on all the time around the world. and it turns out that we've had events that have happened in very highly populated areas. 20 million people on the east coast in the northeast. millions of

people in taiwan and of course, millions of people in the bay area. so these earthquakes tend to be noticed quite a bit. mean, one thing that happened on earlier this week or 2 earthquakes near chico. and it turns out that for those earthquakes and not for the one that occurred this morning, the shaler earthquake early warning system which we have in california, oregon, washington was was triggered. so, yes, even had events just this week in california where early warning was was used. so my last question for you, kind of what advice do you have for our viewers talking about all these different places that have experienced earthquakes. what should people do to make sure they're fully prepared? yes, there there are 3 things. i think that people should really doing. number one know what to do. if you feel shaking or if you get an alert on your phone. and if you don't have quick early warning on your phone, find out more about that at shake alert, dot org. so number one know what to do if you feel shaking are getting alert, drop cover and hold on. number 2, there are

we actually see here in the capital city? 45 per cent looks like it's going to be. >> it's going to be like someone took bite out of the songs on the imagine this, the summer half, half as bright. >> raj said of the sacramento valley, astronomical society says there are some similarities of what will be able to see compared to 2017. the last time there was a total eclipse. his colleague, a one-shot mishra was in kansas during the last one and took this photograph of it. he says the image will be similar to what we will see in the sacramento area, a partial solar eclipse of 45% of the face of the sun by the moon. and what time are we expected to see office at 11, 15 in the morning. rice says we can also expect a slight drop in the temperature which will be noticeable back in 2017. >> when it was not a total eclipse, sacramento had a better show. was 79% covered

and mexico and also the giveaway. some safety classes for free to attendees. so you might be wondering what to do with your glasses after the eclipse. astronomers without borders, international group, they take donations so the glasses don't end up in landfills. they've redistributed the glasses around the world. this is so people can use them when the next eclipse comes around. a whole lot of excitement. and john has actually been talking about that the past few days. john, i'm excited for the it's super exciting to talk about. i know for people across the eastern seaboard, especially. >> i mean, we're going to be looking at the clips working its way up from texas to maine. as far as the path of totality is concerned. you have friends that are up in maine, new hampshire, vermont. those are going to be the best spots for viewing. unfortunately areas with a lot of red on this map are going to be a little cloudier. you'll notice san francisco in the entirety of california in the green. that means that we've got nothing but

sunshine. if you're wanting to get out there and catch that partial eclipse here, we've got some pretty decent skies to be viewing it all across the bay area and not just for inland areas, but all the way up to the coastline. not really talking any fog today either. so that is ideal for sure. and just nice to be stepping outside for the start of the week and are some really clear conditions, as you can see in future cast as we work our way through your monday, right around eclipse time here at 11, 15, just as sunny and just as clear, today's daytime highs are going to push upwards into the 70's after that brief little cool down after 11:00am during the eclipse itself. now we may be warming up midweek, but we've got some big changes in this forecast. going to break down this warm-up first. tomorrow is going to be a little warmer than today. and then wednesday and thursday likely to bring nothing but sunshine in our first 80's of the season. after that, we've got quite the big cool down and it starts on friday but really take shape into saturday as showers make their return to the bay area. we're

going to be looking at cold showers all over again. think where we were just a few days ago. so a big warm-up followed by a big downward kind of a roller coaster of temperatures as we made our way through april. so far, 60's for your daytime highs in the city as well. as for most of the coastline, 60's to 70's elsewhere in the bay area. very pleasant feeling afternoon. go ahead. put on that. he sure those shorts later on today. but as for the morning, you still definitely want to be bundled up this fairly cool out there to start the day. oakland berkeley orinda sitting at 69. well, richmond at 70 degrees. filet o and spots over towards the novato and san or felt each at 71 for your highs. a look ahead. shows temperatures tomorrow. a little bit warmer. there's those first 80's for inland areas that they noted on wednesday and thursday. bayshore cities are also going to get pretty warm, especially wednesday by the weekend will barely even hit 60 degrees come saturday with showers back in the forecast. as for

roads right things out there smooth sailing. an earlier incident at the bay bridge has resulted in no residual delays, which is good to see. it's pretty back to normal. the san mateo bridge at 13 minutes to get you across there. both the richmond center fell and the golden gates are looking nice and smooth, right? all right, john, thank you for that. on the peninsula, 2 lawsuits were filed. >> against the owner of the half of a mushroom farms. 7 people were killed. one person was hurt mass shooting last year. 24 year-old pedro perez shot 5 times but survived at mass shooting. older brother rose did not has joined jose's family filed the suit against california terra gardens and its owner claiming the accused shooter charlie's now and a documented history of violence and the farm did not do anything to ensure the worker safety outside court. pedro perez says he still in disbelief over what happened. >> got

>> welcome back to the kron. morning news. we are excited talking about lot happening today, including the solar eclipse wonder where maybe you're going to end of washington that john shrable has that updated. look. good morning, don. yeah, i mean anywhere you want to watch it we are good to go in the bay area today. the coast, the hillsides of the east bay. if you want to get up to the lawrence hall of science up there, that east bay hills, you're going to have a great view of it just like you will across the rest of the bay area. good news for us. some of the rest of the country, the path of totality is not so crystal clear. but for us, you can see there is nothing getting in the way today. crystal clear skies all the way through eclipse time later now, temperatures are hanging out in the 30's 40's to low 50's right now. some of us like livermore and then up into the north bay are well down in the 30's to get this morning started. so go ahead.

>> i'm excited, but don't get too excited where you look up because you could do some serious damage to your eyes, which is why they're inviting people to the exploratorium right behind me. the viewing party will begin at 10 o'clock. i'm sure they'll let people in a little bit earlier. and unlike watching it yourself, the viewing party will have scientists there to answer all of your questions. yes, fundamentally, we know what's going on. it's the moon passing right before the sun standing in the way of the sun and the earth giving us the solar eclipse. but there is a reason why it happens and how they calculated. this is the first time it's happened in 7 years and it's going to happen partially for us on the west coast. but in other parts of the world, it will be a total eclipse where it is so significant. that it will turn day into night and the temperature should drop a few degrees during that time. now, we do know that it begins

moving right before the sun starting at 10. 0, 6, and should wrap up a little bit more than an hour or so after that. the place to be is the exploratorium. i wish i can tell you that it's free, but it's not. but if you come down here and go inside, you'll have the telescope's. they will live stream the event as well. and they'll have the scientists on hand to answer all of your questions. >> it is truly moon dance with heavenly bodies. earth the moon and the sun. and it gives scientists a chance to look at that face of the sun to know what's going on and to even look at some of the things that are happening at the sun before it reaches the earth because it takes a significant amount of time for all those raise to reach us. but with the solar eclipse and the telescopes, they can see it before it even comes us. what a heavenly thing to do. back to all right. we'll be talk about this all throughout the morning. >> the top of all the mines

also happening today, tesla set to go on trial in san jose over the safety of its electric cars. so the case involves a family. his 2 year-old son crash, a tesla model x to his pregnant mom. accident happened back in 2018. the lawsuit accuses tesla of consumer fraud advertising. the model x is safe. lawsuit also claims tesla knew about a defective design. tesla has denied any liability for the crash attempts to reach a settlement between the attorneys for tesla and the family fell through. well, the east bay, one person killed. the crash happened on 8.80, in fremont. this is video from the citizens app. chp says a red toyota rave arraf for overturned several times heading north on 80 saturday evening. investigators believe high speeds might have been a factor in the crash. one person was ejected from the car and i. well, there a police arrested, a man for a deadly shooting in the mission

district alexander martinez was found and detained in richmond just before 10, 30 friday night. as a beauty, they say he pulled the trigger around one 30 friday afternoon. the intersection of mission and 20th. well, citizens at video of the scent shows pretty heavy police presence there. despite life saving efforts by first responders, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. 4 is your local election headquarters. san francisco board of supervisors president aaron peskin officially launched his mayoral campaign on saturday. he hosted supporters at portsmouth's square in san francisco's chinatown. the dress cost of living in the city. homelessness as well as public safety concerns. >> but right here in this neighborhood, i've stood up for safety, stood up against hate crimes, can't me speaking foot patrols to walk the beat, expanded community ambassadors and strengthen pedestrian safety. that's what every neighborhood in this city

deserves. >> prescott inter's the race alongside incumbent mayor london breed supervisor ahsha stuff. i e nonprofit executive daniel lurie and former san francisco interim mayor supervisor mark farrell. it has been 6 months since the beginning of the war between israel and hamas. on october 7 them on stage, a surprise attack on israel, killing hundreds and taking about 250 people hostage on 133 of them are still being held captive. prime minister benjamin netanyahu vow to destroy hamas and bring all of the hostages home. the hamas-run gaza health ministry claims more than 30,000 civilians died since the war started. so all across the united states, they were march's for the hostages still being held captive by hamas, including one right here in lafayette kron four's idol bart ana has that story.
