>> from the bay area's local news station. you're watching kron. 4 news at 6. >> now at 6, the a's are preparing for a move to las vegas, but they may not be taking their name with them. good evening, everybody. i'm vicki liviakis and i'm ken wayne early this morning. a trademark attorney posted to social media that. >> on the same day that the oakland a's announced they're going to play their next 3 years in sacramento that they also applied to the u.s. patent and trademark office for trademarks to both the sacramento a's and the sacramento athletics. however, it appears that that he might be more focused on their immediate move rather than the team's final destination and application for the las vegas athletics. trademark is filed, but apparently it was not by the team. 10 kerman explains who was trying to claim the name. >> just want to say we're excited to be here for the next 3 years as the a's were

announcing thursday, they would play the next 3 seasons in sacramento, the u.s. patent and trademark swept sideshows. they were also applying for the trademarks to both. >> the sacramento ways and the sacramento athletics. but that website also shows back on march 6th, someone applied for the trademark las vegas athletics and it wasn't the a's. >> we said let's file for. and so we filed a new one that got excepted. now it's in processing. so last hopefully within 5 months will be the owners of the last of las vegas athletics. you heard that correctly a's fan group, the last dive bar. one of a's owner john fisher's, most vocal opponents has applied for the trademark las vegas athletics. find it really interesting for over a year, right? they haven't applied for las vegas athletics. trademark. that makes you wonder. what does it make? you wonder? well, you know,

there's a lot of rumors at the start that the whole las vegas thing was just and will be having the a's do their work for them investigate. you know, expansion in las vegas and so maybe case was never the final destination for the athletics. and so maybe it was always sacramento. you don't know ryan johansen with the last dive bar says the reason they've applied for the las vegas athletics. trademark is simple. it's the teen has taken everything from us from has a fan base. they're despicable humans. as far as the front office, i don't care about the fans. it will care about the community. do care about baseball. so we thought this would be a great way to just kind of. the authority in their side. and if they want the trademark, you know, and it gets approved, they got to go through to get it. johansen says his group should know in 5 months if they get that trademark. >> then he says watch out for what comes next. >> we're definitely excited about the possibility if we get that trademark, there's a lot of fun stuff we're going to do with it.

francisco man was shot and killed in broad daylight. you going to show some we're showing you video from citizen app of the scene happened about one 30 this afternoon near the intersection of mission and 20th in the mission district. police say they found the man with several gunshot wounds say tried life saving techniques, but that didn't work. and the man died. no word on any arrests to the east bay. now a man was arrested after police say he was behind several car burglaries in hercules in pinole. >> officers say around 3 o'clock yesterday morning they stopped a man prowling around it. a turquoise of car in hercules, but they let it go because they couldn't find any crime evidence where police say a woman later flagged down officers and told them that her car had been burglarized and 2 pairs of glasses were missing. police later found the suspect nearby circling another neighborhood and detained him. and that's when officers say he admitted to stealing from several cars in hercules and p nal. he's now facing several charges now to

our 4 zone forecast as we step outside for the grand vista of san francisco. >> lawrence, it's the weekend and a mighty nice looking weekend. it is. yeah. i saw a lot of happy giants fans coming into work today are all along the embarcadero. join that big victory out of the park today. and of course, the sun was shining here, but not everywhere. in fact, we've had a very active afternoon looking good over quite hour right now, skies clear there. >> east bay, it hasn't been that way. we've had reports of hail, numerous thunderstorms popping up there and unusually cool temperatures. check out livermore. they get some strong downdraft and they've had some cold temperatures there. 46 degrees right now in livermore. 48 of lail as those storms continue to roll on through. then you get inside the bexar in the 50's. so really interesting weather around the bay area, this storm system that brought us the rain yesterday. just not done with us yet. got one more round before the sun sets. and i think things will begin to calm down. but you can see numerous lightning strikes popping up in the east bay

breaking news out of the east bay police on the scene of a major crash on the ashby avenue ramp to eastbound interstate 80 in berkeley. >> calls into 9-1-1 report. the car had been shot at by somebody in a different vehicle just before this crash. the chp is on the scene investigating. we'll bring you more details as they come in. convicted murderer richard allen davis is attorneys were in the south bay court today trying to have his death sentence reduced a jury found davis guilty of murdering 12 year-old polly klass in petaluma back in 1996. as kron four's. philippe reports for us tonight. his representatives argue a new law could lead to his sentencing enhancements being dropped. >> marc klass return to santa clara county superior court in san jose friday. his late daughter, polly, is convicted. killer richard alan davis did not. i don't think about richard allen davis. until

something like this happens with his absence. court-approved davis's defense requested the hearing arguing his death sentence should be reconsidered based on new law that disregards previous sentencing enhancements. prosecutors say he is not eligible and that the attempt to vacate a jury verdict is unwarranted. i believe that the criminals in the california system. have very powerful advocates. in sacramento. because there seems to have been a systemic. attempt to undermine. >> why after law after law apparently accomplish 3 things they seem to be trying to destroy 3 strikes because this is all about sentence enhancements. this is exactly what 3 strikes was about. they're trying to empty the prisons and i believe the population is down to 77,000. inmates at this point and they're trying to eliminate the death penalty in 1993,

polly klaas was kidnapped from her home in petaluma during a slumber party. >> 2 months later, davis confessed to killing and burying the 12 year-old girl in a shallow grave near cloverdale. on friday, a motion was filed by the defense to relitigate the sentencing. another filed by prosecutors disputing qualification to the judge heard arguments but did not issue a ruling. marc klass never expected he would have to return to court for this case after davis was convicted. i think it's it's. terribly unfair because >> people like me don't i don't have advocates. i mean, he's got people going to court i think our prosecutors great, but he's representing the people. the only person here this representing pauley army and the other people that were. in the gallery with know this is terrible. this case returns to court at the end of may. >> in san jose, philippe djegal kron. 4 news. >> san jose launched a pilot

program that uses ai to detect homeless encampment. city officials say it will be used to better provide essential services to those in need. but almost advocates worry it will be used to push homeless residents out today. we talked to mayor matt mahan about how that new technology will work. >> and we have one car. we've got outfitted with a half dozen cameras were just beginning to test this one of the things we found we actually didn't set out initially to do this. we're really focused on potholes and graffiti to start. is that these cameras are pretty effective at identifying when people are living in vehicles. this is on road only. we're actually not focused on tent encampments with this pilot. but on on roads were able to figure out when people are living in their car, rv. mahan says finding the places where people are living in cars will allow the city to offer ces he has. the pilot program is. >> not tracking license plate numbers or using facial recognition. california home buyers can now apply for up to

$150,000 in real estate loans. registration is open for the dream for all shared appreciation loan program. it provides up to 20% of a down payment or closing costs when buying a new home now to qualify, you have to be a first-time home buyer to be eligible and at least one borrower must be a first generation homebuyer, the california housing finance agency expects to hand out up to 2000 voters. president biden is set to announce his latest effort to broaden student loan relief. he's expected to lay out 3 new categories for who borrows for borrowers, rather, who would be eligible to get some or all of their federal loans canceled. just last month, it was announced nearly 80,000 public sector workers, including teachers and social workers, would have their student debt canceled. this all comes after the supreme court rejected the administration's first attempt to cancel debt for millions last year. seems like mother

nature's even glad it's friday giving us some sunshine to get ready for the weekend. you know, you you told us we would be getting a break and thankfully it's here. yeah, there lear. yeah, you know, and next week it is going to be something else we're going to be talking about. temperatures in the 70's and the 80's. we're going to say, oh, my goodness, it's hot outside. but what a change we're going to see from really kind of a extremely cold weather, unusually cold weather in the bay area. some snow on the mountain peaks. and you can see some of that up there right now looking toward blow. >> and the dark clouds up above there as well. we've had those thunderstorms rolling across the east bay. well, those so thunderstorms going to calm down overnight. our skies are going to start to clear out. that's a start to get really cold in spots. in fact, how about that? we've got a frost advisory in april all the way from healdsburg down the sonoma and napa and you get the east bay walnut creek livermore, dublin. so noel. yeah, those temperatures going to be hovering near freezing overnight tonight into early tomorrow morning. a freeze warning just a little further to our north with our friends in lake county. so some very cold air settling in. probably not going to see

that again this season. but these are the storms rolling through right now mainly in the east bay, the rest, the bay area, not so bad, but these showers popping up now. but as the sun begins to set, we lose some of the heating from the sun and some of the energy that the storms need to really survive. they're going to fall apart. but pretty awesome. looking out there right numerous lightning strikes out there. you see one near tracy. you see the strong storm now moving near livermore and then you see the areas in the bloom and the peak. that is some sleeping in the show up and some snow across parts of the south bay peaks as well. more on that the way on as we head through the night tonight. that is also going to begin to settle down. but around the state, we're not the only one seeing that wild weather. they're seeing it all the way into southern california across the great find. they've got winter weather advisories. even some winter storm warnings tonight. things will calm down. that looks like as we head toward about 9 o'clock skies should begin to clear out. thank you, lawrence. target's car seat trade in event returns this month begins. april 14th runs through saturday. the 27th. >> the event allows target shoppers to trade in old damaged and expired car seats for 20% off bonus bonus can be

>> another round of closures and layoffs hitting the bay area. today, apple announced

that it's going to be adding to that number. the company says it plans to lay off more than 600 of its workers from various locations in santa clara, effective next month. tech company recently notified state labor officials about these layoffs in february. apple is shut down its decades old quest to build an electric car that resulted in more than 1000 job cuts reassignments 4 employees were working on the project. after more than 40 years. yes, $0.99 only stores are closing their doors. operators of the popular discount chains say that they to start making enough money to survive. the closure will leave nearly 14,000 employees without a job. bay area locations include richmond, antioch, fairfield, and fremont. the discount store had a wide variety of items from household goods to groceries and official closing date, though, has yet to be announced. still ahead on kron, 4 news at 6 gas prices

>> our top story this half-hour tonight, we're learning from a victim injured in the half moon bay mass shooting that killed 7 farmworkers. that victim says he was shot 5 times, including once in the face as kron four's theresa tells us tonight he is suing the farm where the shooting happened for not protecting its workers from harm.
