>> now at five-thirty convicted murderer richard allen davis is attorneys were in a south bay courthouse today. they're trying to have his death sentence reduced in 1996, a jury found him guilty of murdering 12 year-old polly klass in petaluma as kron four's philippe djegal reports his representatives argue based on new law. >> his sentencing enhancements should be dropped. >> i'm having to relive my daughters murder again and that that's just so terribly unfair. marc klass return to santa clara county superior court in san jose friday. his late daughter, polly is convicted. killer richard alan davis did not. i loved the >> prosecutors confidence with his absence. court-approved davis's defense requested the hearing arguing his death sentence should be reconsidered based on new law that disregards previous sentencing enhancements.

prosecutors say he is not eligible and that the attempt to vacate a jury verdict is unwarranted. this individual has been given every consideration under the law from the moment that he was arrested and he's failed and all of his attempts to get to to to get relief, to get re-sentencing. >> even gone to the california supreme court. but here we are. >> yet again in 1993, polly klaas was kidnapped from her home in petaluma during a slumber party. 2 months later, davis confessed to killing and burying the 12 year-old girl in a shallow grave near cloverdale. on friday, a motion was filed by the defense to relitigate the sentencing. another filed by prosecutors disputing qualification to the judge heard arguments but did not issue a ruling. marc klass never expected he would have to return to court for this case after davis was convicted. i might have said something to the effect that

this is finally over. >> yet here we are 30 years later, this case returns to court at the end of may. in san jose. philippe djegal kron. 4 news. >> police have arrested a man accused of starting small fires around fremont and newark officers say firefighters responded to furniture lead on fire tuesday morning near thorton avenue and balboa way that same day cruise newark put out a number of fires near vacant buildings as they searched for an arson suspect. police found the man actively starting another fire in a nearby wooded area. he was arrested for 2 counts of arson. no injuries were reported in any of the incidents. >> meanwhile, police in hercules stopped a man who they say is connected to a number of car burglaries. officers say they found prowling around turquoise drive around 3 thursday morning. they say they searched his car but didn't find any crime evidence so they let him go. but he was driving away woman flag down.

the cops reported that her car had been burglarizing. her sunglasses were gone. and then that night, police say they found the man in a nearby neighborhood. they say he tried to drive way but police detained him. police say he admitted to stealing from cars in hercules and pinole and was booked in jail for burglary. >> a new bill is aiming to help ease symptoms of opioid withdrawal for people recovering from addiction. the bill introduced by san francisco assemblymember matt haney would make the drug methadone more accessible for addiction treatment. the treatment is available in california, but patients are currently required to line up in front of specialized clinics to receive it. amy says drug dealers often gather in front of those clinics to sell drugs to those vulnerable former users. he wants to expand access to methadone. as readily to be as readily available as our cam. 2 palestinian owned businesses are teaming up with. >> islamic relief usa for a

on that patio. >> looks like snow even though it's not right. there is snow at the top of mount diablo still and lawrence is here. if you don't like the cold, lawrence, you're not into the bay area weather right now, right? i mean, because that's what it's been all about the last couple of days. we've had the cold, wild weather around the bay area. the snow. >> in our local peaks. now you get the lightning storms and the hail and it continues outside right now. looking out towards sfo. some delays out there to be dealing with right now. you've got some construction work going on that the sfo right now so lays almost an hour right now. the left no delays reported in oakland or san jose. you're looking good there. but the thunderstorms they keep popping up. and so a very active afternoon, especially in the east bay, as we're seeing those storms riding on through there. but overall me, yeah, this is getaway weekend. and here we are looking up in the high country. they are chaining up on 80 50. that's because all that snow continues to fall across the high country in rolling on by head of them. they going to be cold? start to the day. see

the areas shaded in blue. those are some frost advisories for early tomorrow morning by the afternoon, running up into the 50's. if you plan to head to southern california will be careful going down tonight. there are advisories. some winter storm warnings and some winter weather advisories up over the tattoo peas. but lot of sunshine by tomorrow afternoon. boy, lake tahoe, if you could get up there this weekend, it's just a tough drive up there now. but you can have all kinds of fresh powder. you may not have another weekend like this up there this year. temperatures going to be hovering in the 30's. it is going to be cold there about 52 degrees in reno and 48 degrees in carson city. but if you're sticking around, you're one of those lucky people are going to be joined that fresh powder couple of feet of snow falling across some of the resorts there. well, it looks like that will wind down tonight tomorrow. you just be skiing on that fresh powder. temperatures warming up just slightly into sunday and monday. beautiful weather holding on. it looks like right through the weekend. by next week, though, much warmer weather coming and likely to smell a likely to melt lot of that snow. guys, back to you.

>> as a quick little shaker an earthquake, 4.8 to be exact struck the northeast this morning. rattled some nerves all around the region. it was centered near lebanon. new jersey was felt in philadelphia and new york city. the quake was said to be one of the largest in that area in 100 years. geologists say it was felt. over such a wide area because rock in the region is more dense. no major damage being reported, but definitely some i guess. yeah, they're not used it. so it's it's even more jarring. yeah. take a look. >> cal fire rescued a horse stuck in the mud along the santa ana river. cal fire riverside, blindfolded, the horse before using a chopper to rescue it. good news. still

horse is now home safe and sound. another round of closures and layoffs are hitting the bay area. this comes as the san francisco controller's office released new data showing that the city alone has lost more than 20,000 jobs in just a three-month period. a lot of those losses are from layoffs in the tech industry today, apple announced it's adding to that number, apple's planning to lay off more than 600 of its workers. >> from various locations in santa clara affective next month. the company recently notified state labor officials about those layoffs in february. the tech giant shut down its decade-old quest to build an electric vehicle that resulted in more than 1000 job cuts or reassignments for employees who had been working on that project. closures after more than 40 years. $0.99 only stores are closing their doors. operators of the popular discount chain say. >> they just aren't making enough money to survive. the closures will leave nearly

though it's even worse. the prices gas right now on average is in marin county 5.53, the cheapest place to get gas is in the north and solano county in the east bay. drivers in contra costa county are paying about 5.36, while people in alameda county 5.41. in santa clara county. on average. it's 5.37 peninsula. price jumps 5.51. paying about the same in san francisco. 5.50. >> well, get ready for san francisco's restaurant week already told you about weed week. now, here's that restaurant week the mayor was talking about. it starts today. will be a 10 day long celebration. it's an opportunity for participating restaurants to highlight their most popular dishes with special prefix menus and for people to find new places to eat. >> i think it's nice because it feels like a celebration across the city. one of things we work really hard at the golden gate restaurant association is trying to make certain that we have participants in all different neighborhoods across the city

>> april is celebrated as autism acceptance month. and tonight we're spotlighting a program in the south bay that gives adults learning disabilities a chance to continue their college education. one often the group is aged out of the educational system, a great initiative.

air kron four's philippe djegal now shows us how students are gaining on the job training experiences to help them launch careers. >> we're going to talk about what kids are except inc and inclusion, inspire participation at the college of adaptive arts. healthy shine who i want to be and how is a nonprofit co-founded by deanna person's eye. and doctor pamela munsey a decade and a half ago now supports 230 students in person at their facility on the west valley college campus in saratoga and online nationally and internationally. >> via zoom, absolutely transformative right here. we have a whole group of aspiring apprentice. is that one of the assistance and the sign language class? >> they want be professors in the theater class. many of the students diagnosed with intellectual and developmental disabilities, noting setbacks

early in life was a bumpy ride. my mind is my most powerful tool. you know, i need to be able to use it and use to the best of my abilities that that overtime obstacles to learning overcome with the school through continued education in the classroom. mine is not holding back match. now that i find it stopped >> what i would find its top cares for people know how to help you. the school gives adults in special education, real college experience and the path towards a career of their choosing. it's important that we learn how to work. recently launched a new workforce development program students like sam headley and victoria rivera are trained and paid apprenticeship positions song in jennings don't let your disability. >> stop. he of my goal eventually to become, you know, a professor here at caa and teach classes. but of

course, there's still a long way to go in all 50 states. adults in the special education system are mandated out of public schools by the age of 21 or 22, according to the centers for disease control and prevention, 6 and a half million people in the united states live with intellectual or developmental disabilities. goal is to give a lifelong equitable college experience to adults. >> who historically haven't had access. doctor, lindsay says the college has 10 schools of study in liberal arts, including visual arts business communications and dance. students are moving mountains. they do have a lot of extra hills to climb and to move and they're doing it so beautifully. i would like to be the one of me and to ensure that makes a difference as part of rivera's apprenticeship, which like for the rest of her peers. last she has been appointed a project manager. >> and he's organizing cea's 15 year anniversary celebration on mother's day called the low rider car show at mexican heritage plaza in

and active day and cold overnight. it's kind of romantic. and weirdly almost tropical. but i know that it feels completely different than the tropics outside wants to go all way out there. right? but yeah, it's been cold. fact, unusually cold around the bay area. these temperatures running a good 10 degrees. plus below the average for this time of year. >> and tonight we could be talking about a freeze. that's right. maybe one last jack frost visit for tonight. then when they put in the bed for at least a to it's october. so as get back to the cold them, but the boy just got to see many more days like this. but here we go. we've got the clouds out there right now on the horizon, though. you see those dark hours out there on the rise and some thunderstorms popping up over the eastern part of the bay area. so tonight, yes, showers going to come to an end overnight tonight and your skies going to start to clear out and that's going to be cold outside tomorrow. partly cloudy, especially late in the day as weak system gets a little bit close closer and temperatures just a little bit cool. it's going to be little breezy, too. and then on sunday, you might start out with just a light shower

before you wake up before the sunrise. but after that, i think we've got mostly sunny skies and tempera ures will warm up just slightly. but yeah, good old jack frost, pain of this in the bay area. look at that. all those areas shaded in blue. we're talking about a frost advisory up to santa rosa petaluma sonoma, napa, saint lena and then the east bay. you've got walnut creek livermore, brentwood, antioch, dublin snow. we're always under that frost advisory and further to the north. they've actually got a freeze warning just north of us. you get up toward lake county going to be much colder there as well. temperatures out the door. but really interesting afternoon you get these thunderstorms. you get the strong downdraft. these temperatures in the 40 45 degrees right now a little more because again, those cold winds dropping out of bases. some of those thunderstorms elsewhere around the bay area. 54 temper on 55 in berkeley and fifty-two degrees right now in napa. but there are those thunderstorms popping up the last couple of hours here is they wouldn't really rolled through the east bay right now. most the rest, the bay area, just some passing clouds, a little sunshine, pretty brisk wind out there, though, that some of those winds been kicking up still raining in the east bay into

pleasanton livermore. right now. you see some pretty good cells out there this time and more of that on the way. in fact, the state were still see more showers in southern california. if you're traveling down again along the i-5, be careful of grapevine, expecting some snow there. but here's the good news. i think we're kind of seeing the end of this series of systems. we've got one little weak, going start to fall apart by tomorrow night into early on sunday morning. that one moves on through moves out of town and then we start to dry things out. a boy. we're going to really warm things up next week tonight, though. yeah, it's going to be frigid out there for an april a night about 33 degrees hovering right around freezing in santa rosa. 36 in livermore furlough. 39 in concord and 36 degrees in by tomorrow afternoon. 50's and 60's. a little breezy, too, next couple days. we're going to see return of spring as we'll see those temperatures warming up in the 70's by monday and tuesday backed we get to wednesday and thursday. talk about some of those numbers all the way up in the 80's. guys, back to you. all right. thanks, lawrence. what we're now just a few days away from the historic total solar

eclipse. it's monday and travelers looking for last-minute lodging. >> across the path of totality are getting left in the dark. new data from airbnb shows its occupancy rates are along the best path from texas to maine are at 100%. they're booked up hotels. there. there are also fully booked. however, there are still some options. hotel room say they, you know, may open up as some people cancel, maybe plans change illness. maybe the weather is not great. there's also the option of finding a place to sleep. that's further away from the path of totality. and then you know that you drive the rest of the way. so you can still get there. >> meanwhile, some eclipse enthusiasts are taking advantage of this once in a lifetime moment to get married. for example, in one town of ohio, the chamber of commerce reports 150 couples have registered to elope on monday with participants arriving from all over the country. the new york times reports during the 2017 solar eclipse nearly 1000 ceremonies were listed that day on the

alone library cardholders can use the new on the wall program to borrow art from a local artist. can borrow art from the south novato point reyes station corte madera and marin city branches. artists were able to submit 2 dimensional pieces like drawings, paintings, photography, pritts, textiles or mixed media. >> scott and big and update now from the oakland zoo. liv leave the tiger cub or tiger lily, as we like to call her is feeling much better and will soon be moved to a forever home. the zoo posted this video about 30 minutes ago. so this is breaking lily rolling around in the hay just really enjoying yourselves. the zoo was thanking the team of vets who have helped her recover from several bone fractures over the last 6 weeks. that says she got to
