3:00 pm
you so much for joining us here on kron. 4 news at 3. i'm justine waldman. for the 3rd time in 5 years, the town is saying goodbye to a professional sports team. the a's are officially out after more it really the warriors. how did we the oakland raiders? how are we losing the oakland a's? no major american city lost 3 major professional sports teams in such a short period of time. this is going to keep smashing into the side of the hearts minds and souls of days stands for. >> years to come. but coliseum was the last town square left in open that people of all backgrounds could get together and celebrate their sports changed. and now it is going to be a quiet location. >> so as a former a's executive talking to us and after more than a half-century in the east bay, the oakland athletics are headed to sacramento as kron. 4 so-called reports the team announced it will play home
3:01 pm
games at sutter health park starting next season. >> major league baseball will work with the a's and the river cats. the minor league baseball team that plays their home games here at sutter health park to ensure that their schedules do not overlap. that should come out in the summer. and major league baseball also adds that this facility already undergone a multimillion dollar renovation and you can expect more upgrades to ensure that this area complies with major league baseball standards during a news conference here at sutter health park in west sacramento thursday. >> a's owner john fisher and sacramento kings owner, the veteran of bay celebrating their deal to bring the a's to the state capitol remedy that owns the river cats and the minor league team. a san francisco giants affiliate will now share their park with the a's at the end of this season, the park will host the a's for 3 seasons starting in 2025. with an option for a 4th. this ahead of the team's planned move to las vegas in
3:02 pm
2028, all of this happening before the a's have even broken ground on their stadium in nevada. he's team president dave kaval explains why the team chose sacramento rather than playing their home games at their minor league affiliate stadium in los vegas. we looked at a variety of options. obviously las vegas here, salt lake city, oakland. >> and we felt that this was just a great interim home for the a's. we have a lot of fans in this region. it's a great location. we have a great partnership with the kings and the back and his team to really ended up being the best option for the club we have. like i said, we have a long-standing tv partnership nbc, california and the comcast and you know, they're an important partner in stakeholder in making that decision. >> and they were very supportive that this location, john fisher made no mention of the city of oakland today. >> kabul did acknowledging that this is a sad day for oakland in west sacramento, philippe djegal all kron. 4 news. >> the athletics have called
3:03 pm
oakland home since 1968. and while the team has propose moving in the past, this will be the first time a move will actually take place in 2014. the a's signed a 10 year lease to remain at the coliseum. then a 2018 the a's announced a plan for a ballpark at howard terminal by 2021. with no ballpark plan in place. major league baseball permitted the a's to explore relocation in 2023. the a's did reach a deal to move to a site at the tropicana in las vegas. the mlb owners did approve that move. the tropicana is set to be imploded later on this year. but with this vegas stadium not set to open until at least 2028. the team had been searching for a place to play when the current lease at the coliseum ends at the end of this season. and now oakland mayor sheng thao has responded to the a's decision to leave the town. 4 sac town saying, quote, open offered a deal that was fair to the a's. i was fiscally responsible for our city. we wish the a's the best and we'll continue our conversations with them and
3:04 pm
facilitating the sale of their share of the coliseum site. the city of oakland will now focus on advancing redevelopment efforts at the coliseum and the move does follow a number of protests that called for new ownership and to keep the a's in oakland fans wanted owner john fisher to sell the team and they also held all those boycotts of games because this is not the first time a major league sports team has moved out of oakland. the raiders relocated to las vegas in 2020 and the golden state warriors moved out of oracle arena on 2019. they had to chase center in san francisco. so a's fans are saddened, but not surprised. >> were not shot. were anything i'm disgusted discussed at the press conference. they had of the river cats stadium. the announcing john fisher. i mean, you can't you can't have 2 more disgusting people buying one microphone. the owner of the >> the that, you know, he he definitely messed up oakland's
3:05 pm
leverage. >> by doing this for him to go and help facilitate this for the ace leave oakland faster than what they were expected to be a. it's very disheartening. and and made point. >> so the irony of this is that the owner of the kings and river cats headed up the ownership group that bought the sacramento kings and 2013 with the express purpose of keeping the team in sacramento when they were already one step out the door in a move to seattle now is fans can already go to sutter health park's website to put down a deposit for season ticket. so here's a message that's on the home screen right now. it's as you can get on the priority list for tickets for 202 all right. stay with us here on kron 4 on air and online for continuing coverage of the a's moved to sacramento. you can download the free kron 4 app to get push alerts sent directly to your mobile device. you can find out when news breaks. we'll talk now
3:06 pm
about our forecast right now because is storm arrived this morning. here's some of that rainfall that came down in the north bay. here's a look at what's going on in sandra fell some slick roads and some heavier rain falling in a marine county. there was snow on mount tam this morning. that is a sight we don't normally see, especially the spring. so that was from this morning. you can see all those flakes there. here is what it looks like from the top of mount tam right now in the bay area. looks real pretty. we're going check in now with our meteorologist kyla grogan for details. still a chance of rain up for the rest of the day. yes, absolutely. and you can see it there. you know, as we have this counter clockwise circulation around low pressure is still continues to drag some of that moisture in. >> now, a lot of this right now is rolling right up to the sierra and the got some snow happening there. but having said that, you can see where this just polls a little bit in and that way. we're not kind of done with this yet, right? so you could get caught in a shower and they are just light showers right that you can see unnoticed in and
3:07 pm
around that hamilton, you see some of that snow happening up there, too. so still some very cold air to work with looking pretty good right now. the east bay as a few scattered showers, north bay has some light showers happening as well. right along 101 between nevado in santa rosa. that's obviously going to set us up for a tricky rush hour this afternoon. so while the roads are looking pretty good here at the golden gate bridge, just understand you could be driving into a few showers. if you're headed up there in about 4, 5 o'clock today. so let's talk about totals in the santa cruz mountains. we've got just under half an inch of rain. same story in orinda, though, the east bay, really it's decent homes in the east bay, oakland, about four-tenths san francisco. just a little omer a quarter of an inch santa rosa just under just shy of a quarter of an inch in mountain view about 2 tenths. so it really hasn't been about the extreme totals with the rain. it's been more about the cold air that's been rolling in were also little breezy this afternoon. you can see napa right now showing about 21 miles per hours. that's going adding to this as the cool air is being rushed around right now in santa rosa. just 46 degrees in napa. 47. so plenty of cold air
3:08 pm
still out there. we're sitting in the 50's in most spots and you know, this is the heat of the day. it's not getting any warmer than this. and if you're in santa rosa right now, you're 19 degrees cooler than you were this time yesterday. so live look from mount tam or you can see things have certainly quieted down a bit. but we are not done with this quite yet. i'll be back in a bit. track it hour by hour with the showers that could show up between now and tomorrow. and we'll talk about a major warm-up on the way that i like because snow on april is certainly something our storm coverage will continue right now with kron four's terisa stasio. she caught up with people to get their take on the. >> winter weather in spring. she is live for us now in marin county and theresa looks nice and sunny out there now. >> it's nice and sunny, but i have to admit, i do have 3 coats on. so as kylie was mentioning, it is kind of chilly and certainly very breezy as i loading onto my hat. but it's really what the talk of the day as today with that snow on mount tam.
3:09 pm
>> thanks, soft. beautiful snow fell on mount tam a pious at 2500 feet elevation. it was that cold at the higher mountain peaks to turn the rain into flurries. the snowfall didn't last long. but for those out on the mountain, the brisk temperatures were magical. >> beautiful known was out. there's a soft, i'm single track running and just beautiful trees. love these friends just back from a windy run through the woods. whereas one didn't mind the wet conditions. another not so much normally at this time. is it sunny and we are sick of look at my haha. so you don't walk. they like today. so >> we tried different venues for john, what slur he was trying to capitalize on the small fraction of clear weather in the day taking his dog darted out. >> who didn't seem pleased with the rain this late in the
3:10 pm
season. are you surprised that we are getting so much rain this morning? and that's and more because there's no such thing as normal anymore. absolutely not. so i they have to go out fussing in the morning. so i was here thing in the rain. >> i was actually probably the only person with the spring spaniels for sophie kirk. she says rain or shine. the sisters are always up for a jog outside. as for herself. well, she didn't mind the rain at all. we stepping out what is in the uk. so my husband scottish say he's used to the right. >> this perspective, you can see all those beautiful clouds casting some shadows on mount tam. i don't see any snow that stock up there. i know that we have some pictures from james. he was out mount diablo. you could see some nice dusting on those mountains, but it looks like everything is i melted here. we're out here in front
3:11 pm
of mill valley middle school. and you can see all the kids are out. of course, some have shorts on because, you know, that's just how teenagers are back to you. >> theresa, thank you. and makes you feel any better. it's going like 80 degrees next week. according to kyla put the jacket. all right. other news right now because we have learned 10 people have now been confirmed dead following a deadly 7.4 earthquake in taiwan. that's the strongest quake there. 25 years. >> more than 1000 other people have been injured. dozens are still missing. workers are using an excavator to put construction materials around the base of damage buildings to stabilize them and prevent them from collapsing. the powerful quake hit wednesday morning in taiwan and one survivor arrived and shared his experience. >> it comes just a there is the beginning and i was at work and working at home. yeah, it's come so great. and there's me and my wife and my
3:12 pm
daughter in the house that so just with other less 10 everything just >> so he also says the shaking was not as strong where he lives. the epicenter was about 200 miles away from his home and in the bay area. the taiwanese american federation of northern california is raising money to help with relief efforts. >> i think it will be used to help the survivors and to repair buildings and make sure people are taking care of forget lee quickly as possible. >> the collision is sending money to taiwan by checking money order transfers. if you do have a link to their website on our website. kron 4 dot com. coming up here. another big name plans to join the race for san francisco mayor will take a look at the candidate. >> also there are new efforts in the east bay to stop illegal sideshows. what officials are doing now to combat this crime. plus, there are still plenty of questions surrounding the future of the
3:13 pm
a's and the future of the coliseum. so after the break, we're going to speak with a forme president a major league team who worked out a deal to keep his team in this city. and we'll see if the a's city. and we'll see if the a's are really gone for good. she got that dress with the extra money she saved
3:14 pm
using our brand new grocery outlet app. it's been really fun seeing what everyone's doing with the extra money they save. nice shirt. just got back from vacation. a butler? super nice guy. i got to start using the app.
3:15 pm
>> a live look here at our radar. yes, still some rain coming down across the bay area right now. i was going to join us in just a few minutes so we can see when the storm system is going to slow down. but for now, we're going to go back to our top story because the athletics will soon be leaving oakland and joining us now to answer some of our questions about this big announcement today is the former president of the miami marlins. david sampson, thank you for joining us here. thank
3:16 pm
you. okay. so we've talked before and you said never say never. you never know. they might stay. things could happen. but this really feels like the final nail in the coffin. >> well, i don't know that it's the final now, but it clearly is a big step. i don't think there was a scenario where they were going to stay in the coliseum short of having it done. deal for a new ballpark in oakland. so i think the most sacramento is something that had been brewing for quite a long time. but i will say that the deal to go to sacramento for this interim period does not make the biggest deal finished. it has nothing to do with the biggest stadium or the vegas deal. so people are speculating could be the a's and up in sacramento. the answer is no one knows yet. so they could be in sacramento for a short period of time. 3 years. it could be longer while ballpark is built in vegas or and deal could actually happen oakland. you just don't know what's going
3:17 pm
to happen. >> so because this ballpark las vegas is like nowhere near to being done at all. the haven't even imploded the tropicana yet where that's where they want to build this new mlb park. you're thinking you're what people are thinking is that because that's not dion? are there no contingencies between leaving oakland and going to sacramento? there's nothing tying all 3 of those moves together that they could be kind of stranded after this west sacramento deal. >> well, that's the whole point. you can never be stranded as major league baseball team. you have to have a place to play and mlb has to get the schedule out for next year. that's already in the process. teams get their first look at the schedule as early as may. so you had to know where oakland was going to play. that said it's very telling to me they're not calling it the sacramento ways. they're not calling it. the las vegas they're just calling it the a's and the athletics. and the reason for that is there's still uncertainty as to where oakland is going to play
3:18 pm
long-term where the a's are going to play long-term. and i understand that the mayor said that we're not going to look into redevelopment of the coliseum site. that makes sense. and that smart to do the only thing that i would tell everyone in oakland is that just because the sacramento for now doesn't mean that the team has permanently there or permanently in they just don't know yet. so when you think will now? it would appear that you'd like to know soon. but what this does, it's almost like kicking the can. you do know that it's about 36 months to build a ballpark with the rules. so in order to open in vegas and 28, they have to start building and i don't mean tearing down the trop. i mean, building up a ball park somewhere around april of 25. so there's still 12 months to go. but i can tell you from building a ballpark in miami. we need those extra 12 months to get construction documents to get the budget to get the financing to get everything ready. so there needs to be
3:19 pm
momentum and actual things happening for the vegas ballpark to open in. 28. but it would appear in the sacramento kings host them through. 28, if there's a year delay. yeah, they're they're reading all this is going. yes. and that that is what you have to do because baseball doesn't want to do this every year. they don't press conferences every year about where's oakland in a play where they not going to play and there have to be improvements made to the sacramento stadium because it's a triple a stadium in needs to become a major league stadium. so that requires money and investment. and that is really the next step and what the focus will be for the a's front office. and it holds like a fraction of the fans that the coliseum holds. what do you think of west sacramento as being a home? and i think everyone's going oakland a's fan. police are always going to call the oakland a's. but >> white, sacramento, do you think that's a good fit? >> wait to see is what i like to send my show. nothing personal. it certainly is an opportunity. and they were pretty clear during the press conference that sacramento as
3:20 pm
an expansion possibility or relocation possibility is something they want. but now you're bringing in team and we're going to see whether or not they drawn sacramento. so it's going to be interesting to see what happens with the a's payroll because it's still going to be tied to their revenue and revenues going to be kept because it's such a small ball park and we have to see what happens with the tv revenue because they're now outside of the oakland area. so that's going to have to be renegotiated. so there's so many different steps that still have to take place. >> david samson, thank you so much for joining us here on kron for this afternoon. appreciate your time. it's just it's a lot. i think that's we're trying get across today. appreciate it. >> thank you. speech you you know what? >> all right. let's speak to kyla now about the forecast sunny here in san francisco right now. at least it's trying to be. kyle is tracking where the rain is going for our evening commute. yes, the question is, will it remain that way? when you and i go
3:21 pm
home today? i hope so. yeah, me too to get us home. and that's the key, right? let's go to and we had those snowflakes earlier today. pretty quiet up there right now, although i did see some of those trees moving around to get a little wind happening now, let's go to yosemite everybody. this is half dome. you can hardly see anything. you know, visibility is just gone because of all the snow that's coming down there and piling up watching this throughout the day. now, let's go to tahoe where the temperatures, 27 degrees. so we're in prime snowmaking territory there. as far as the temperatures are concerned and you can see where that moisture is starting to roll in. now the heavier snow is down in spots like mammoth lake. it is down in around. you're 70. you see some of that lightning popping up as well showing that storms are getting very ju step at this hour. and as we move towards lake tahoe, it's still just kind of getting started there. as far as the lighter snow is concerned. but having said that, they're going to get plenty as we get into tonight. here are the winter storm warnings in red. you can see in central and southern california in northern california, up in lake mendocino counties. we are
3:22 pm
under that winter weather advisory through 11 o'clock tonight. that does include in and around ukiah, clear lake and then towards tahoe. it goes until friday at 11 o'clock. so tomorrow night expecting up at the peaks that we could see in another foot foot and a half of snow. so now, of course, is not the time to be on the roads. you want to avoid that until later tomorrow evening. let me show you futurecast how this plays out again. this is that counter clockwise circulation. so this will start to drop to the south of it. but here we are tonight you can see that cold air still wrapping around making some snow and sending a little bit of rain as well to the bay area. this is tomorrow afternoon. and then week finally wrap it up and we are done as we head into friday night and again, these totals are going to be impressive. but i do think the higher winds are going to be where we see that heavier snow falling right now, which is more in and around that mammoth lake area as opposed to what's happening in tahoe also want to mention we've had some delays out at sfo today, arriving flights delayed over 2 hours. we get weather sometimes they can use all of the runways because we've got one under construction in the wind is going one way. they
3:23 pm
can't use them. also think that's what's happening today. but you can see here tomorrow still that thunderstorm chance a little bit of shower action. and then we warm up saturday into sunday and next week i've got some wild temperatures to show you will be back at it with your seven-day forecast. thank you. still ahead, small businesses in oakland targeted by thieves and now the owners are calling on officials to do something. >> but the ongoing crime and a former stanford professor has filed a lawsuit against the university. why he says school leaders violated policy.

>> we continue our coverage on today's announcement that the a's are really leaving oakland at the end of the season. they are going to play at sutter health park in west sacramento, starting in 2025. this move. those just temporary. the team still has its sights set on and eventually moved to las vegas during kron for news at noon, a former a's executive explained what this could mean. >> if in fact the team does relocate to las vegas sports. economists believe that it will be worth 2.4 billion dollars and major league baseball through the commissioner. rob manfred has

said that as soon as the a's are playing a new ballpark or it's under way and tampa is got a ballpark that they're planning. then we major league baseball will expand by 2 additional franchises, each one of them having to ante up to 0.2 billion dollars just to get into exit. 4.4 billion which gets split amongst baseball and its 30 teams. >> so when asked, andy, do let's just say there's a chance that the athletics could wind up back in oakland. it. and the oakland baller sending out a statement that reads the ballers were started by the a's fans and as such we're heartbroken. but this team was also started by oaklanders. and in that respect, we could be more proud today. it's a tough day, but you can't be beaten if you never give up. let's build something great together. so joining us now from the oakland ballers, we have paul friedman and brian carmel.
3:32 pm
they're here to talk about what the ballers are doing. thanks for joining us here during kron for news this afternoon. but we've got to start with what's going on with the a's and we heard a little bit of your reaction. >> the a's leaving oakland going to sacramento for a little while and possibly the las vegas. how does that impact what you're trying to do? well, >> you know, for first of all, bonded became friends. but for the ace we know we we are big check case fans this day is heartbreaking for us. it's heartbreaking for us. but if you seen what the fan bases is done around the a's have seen the energy. you seen the activism. it just makes us incredibly proud. we're just really proud of of oakland and what are our theme is that we're a team built by the fans and we think that the oakland fans building with us can build something really special. >> do you think that the coliseum could be a place that you might possibly want to play? and i know you're doing some renovations to rim on the park, but the coliseum is, you know, could be available. we're excited to play reminding park, which is and
3:33 pm
that's our intention. and that's what we're doing for our inaugural season. we're excited to play a reminder park. hopefully beyond that, you know. >> we're talking to the community were talking to the city. we're talking to the fans and we will do what's best for for oakland. and that's what we know. i think in terms of playing at the coliseum, we tried to play a game at the coliseum. we were really excited about it. it was june 29th didn't work out for all the reasons that that have been covered and we continue to be excited about the prospect of playing a game at at the coliseum. if if that ever comes to fruition, we're excited to go see routes games there in seoul, games. you know, it's a beautiful ballpark. we want to see it activated. >> all right. from the a's now to the bees will actually talk about you guys in the baseball team that plans to stay in oakland. how's it going? raising money, getting people excited about it? i mean, this is a big deal to have baseball this the first minor league team on the west coast. is that right? first minor league team in our but but but >> oakland has rich, beautiful, traditional baseball that predates the

ace. the oaks, the and, you know, we restarted based on the theme that baseball must continue in oakland and we're going to continue that legacy in oakland and it's, you know, it's it's been putting the team together. it's been incredible. the reaction of the fans has been incredible. the reaction the community people are excited about what we can build in the future and excited that oaklanders are taking over the destiny of what happens with with you have open tryouts this weekend and my son who's in little league of like, can i can i do that? >> he's pretty good. but i don't think he's quite at the level that you guys are looking at for the people who interested in coming to try out like what are you looking for? pitchers catchers? what level of play do you want to you've got to be able to ball to be on the ball as i think we have about 6 open spots for spring training. >> that are, you know, that our coaching staff is going to be looking to fill. and so you need to have, you know, you need to have all 5 tools and you need to be able to play at the caliber. >> of our team in our league, which is incredibly high

3:36 pm
oakland was nothing for 30 years. i think oakland is the best city in the world. most diverse city in america. america is a melting oakland's the crucible and it has a beautiful tradition of baseball that the history of baseball history of oakland are in are intertwined and we're a baseball town. we need to continue to have baseball and we're, you know, it excited to be able to be a team built by the fans and built in play in this wonderful city. and the last question here, sorry to the a's leaving, put more pressure on you to like put on a better game and have a better team in a better show on? >> no, i think here's what i would say is every fan that cares about us. every kid that starts to follow us. every person who buys a hat. every time we're on tv does put more pressure on us to deliver like we and we take this very seriously like we are doing this because we want to make a know, we believe fundamentally that the purpose of sports to bring communities together and the more attention we get, the more pressure put on us. it is a but we believe we're going to live or for the city and why? yes. i said no. has. i
