news, we're tracking the rain making its way across the bay area. and as you can see, it is starting to fall. i know my morning commute was a little slick and wet. please be careful as you're traveling. we'll have that coming up. >> from the area's local news station, you're watching the kron. 4 morning far. >> well, good thursday morning and thank you waking up with us. early for the kron. 4 morning news today is thursday, april 4th, the main rv. all right. it's a slick. what start and i experience it on my way into work this morning. john definitely had to use the windshield wipers and i probably need to change them to come it's a good realization. hopefully you can get those new wipers on before you hit the roads this morning and get out there. >> little bit earlier because rainfall is going to be picking up here in a couple of hours making for our wettest conditions right in the heart of the busiest time of the morning drive at the golden gate bridge. we've seen some light showers so far but only going to be seeing more and more of that rainfall pushing in from the west. most of us

still sitting offshore right now. we do have some coastal showers up in sonoma county. couple of them out and to the east bay. i do want to know what we have down in the santa cruz mountains right now, which is our first sign of a little bit of snowfall at those very higher elevations down above saratoga, los gatos down in the south bay. so definitely an active morning, but only ramping up from here. as we do see more and more rain on its way as we move into the late morning and middle of the day, current temperatures are actually pretty chilly. only down in the 40's right now. and that's the reason that we are going to be looking at the potential of some snowfall on our bay area mountaintops. let's time everything out for you. 06:15am, starting to pick up more and more in the north bay by the time that we reach 07:00am you can see it right there. rainfall really sitting right across the peninsula rolling into the east bay towards the 8 o'clock hour or so. this is a pretty busy time of the morning right here. your cold front just swings through right in the middle of everything. as you can see, we do have a lot of blue down in

the mountains east of san jose and south of the tri valley. that's all that snowfall i'm talking about. this is a cold spring system. so it's resulting in both a mix of rain and a mix of snowfall. most of this is going to be during the morning hours up towards noon. we'll still have a few showers with just a few spotty, isolated showers into the afternoon, but also sometimes of sunshine. so get ready for a wet morning commute. after that, we should be a little bit more stable. michael thomas, stand again for traffic this morning. what is going on the roads, michael? hey, good morning. everyone will so far so good. but we're hoping that it stays that way. you see lots of green here across the entire bay area. >> getting a live look right now at the bay bridge. everything does seem to be flowing across mates to fremont only an 8 minute commute. some quick drive times for you. those of you a little bit more inland heading out this morning, livermore to dublin 10 minutes, 14 commute from dublin to fremont. it's a 20 minute commute. san leandro over to milpitas in milpitas to sunnyvale. a 6 minute commute. give you guys a last

look right here at the san mateo bridge. you can see everything is flowing smoothly. and of course, the richmond, sandra fell bridge only a 7 minute commute from tolls to 101 right now. send it back to you. all right, michael, thank you for that update. there. so thousands of nurses in santa clara county, they were back on the picket lines with a second straight day. >> while smaller group of nurses held a rally in san francisco over sara stinson brings us the latest on both demonstrations. >> nearly 4,000 nurses in santa clara county are on a three-day strike demanding higher pay. they were back on the picket line 3 different hospitals on wednesday, including saint louise regional meanwhile, the county saying it is flown in nurses from across the country to keep hospitals operational over 20 million dollars to bring in staff from. >> agency to support patient care. and we have successfully oriented over 1000

individuals. the county is currently offering a 10 and a half percent increase over the next 3 years. >> the nurses are asking for 15% underpaid and course when you when you compare the other hospitals in our county, james mount has been a nurse for 25 years. he says the union has been negotiating with the county since august about much more than a pay raise. the county wants to float nurses to other hospitals from their home hospital to other hospitals. now that affects their family life. that affects a lot of things. with nurses mount says they also want the hospitals to increase security. workplace violence has been an issue. we've had several. >> is this is i should say more than several at the hospitals where security was inadequate to protect a nurse. county officials say they have already reached tentative agreements with the union on many key items, including workplace safety. but still don't see eye to eye on wage increases. also on wednesday, nurses at san francisco general held a rally saying they are facing a major staffing crisis there. and at

laguna honda nurses say at us of general alone, they have submitted 1400 complaints in the last 2 years about missed a meal breaks and unsafe working conditions. >> well, that was sara stinson reporting. so this morning will be the 3rd day for the nurses strike in santa clara county county. officials say the union has not responded to request schedule more bargaining sessions. and update to a story we brought you first here on the kron. 4 morning news. a teen is arrested in the south bay after police say he was behind the wheel when he crashed into another car, killing the driver. so video shows the aftermath. the yesterday's morning crash right near the intersection of even boulevard and elkins way. police say the teen was driving the black car. neighbors say this is not the first time there's been an accident and they hope the city can make some safety improvements. >> loud, very loud vehicle me up. and i do want to come out what i did. i hope this one. they will push some traffic they will push some traffic light because all we accident.

word. if he was under the influence. well, the city of any out there taking new measures to stop the dangerous driving stunts from taking place. the mayor says a new electric gate. it's going to be going up at the marina. so the city council voted on tuesday to implement the new gate. it's going to close at night stopping cars trying partake in sideshows in their tracks. this was the scene back in august when a car involved in a cycle flipped into the water right off of antioch boat dock just this past weekend. more than 200 people showed a bit of sideshow at a lone tree way and golf course drive. mayor says recent police department scandals have really hurt the city's effort to stop ideshows. but those days are in the rearview mirror. >> yeah. when the police that levels were impacted by the fbi investigation, we lost out there isn't. so that certainly had that it felt like that. we just open the games to sideshows here, but were quickly stepping up. we've got 6 officers in the academy 12 that will be entering the academy made our proactive are

car involved abandoned at 14th and that homeless streets. kron 4 is your local election headquarters. san francisco board of supervisors president aaron peskin says he is running for mayor. he says he's planning to file paperwork friday morning officially announce his run at an event on saturday. 2 eastbound lanes of the richmond, sandra fell bridge now reopen as we started at 07:00pm to 05:00am. 2 lanes are closed repairs. the project will likely continue until saturday morning. caltrans is the exact duration of the work really depends on the >> rain and as of right now. >> frustration is mounting for small business owners in oakland's fruitvale district after several shops and the public market were burglarized this week robbers, dan thorn got a chance to talk with local business owners. there. >> at least for small businesses in oakland's fruitvale public market hit by burglars this week. oakland

police say 2 unknown intruders ransacked offices and stole cash and computers from a bakery jewelry store, ice cream shop and electronics repair service. it's super frustrating just to see these these folks, you know. >> working every day. the frustration they have. >> and to have something like this happen, it's really disheartening. >> business owner dominic prado says his restaurant tacos, el al ballet was spared. but the public market is a tight-knit community and crimes like these are a shared pain. they deserve better. we deserve better. >> many of these business owners have been there for over. 25 years. the nonprofit unity council owns the public market. >> they say despite investing more than a million dollars in security, it has not been enough. we're asking for local regional and federal support so that we can be whole again. prado argues the unity council could also be doing more to help the public markets.

will also use its license plate readers track down culprits. the measure goes into effect april 18. >> all right. let's get a look at whether it is off to a rainy start. how long is the rain will stick around on? good morning. yeah, we're seeing that ramping up right in the middle of the morning commute. so we've yet to even see the heaviest up just yet. so in to sup 8, some slick roadways as you're getting out there the next several hours where we're sitting across the bay right now, we've seen some light sprinkles very few and far between at the moment. but you do see some activity on the north bay coastline as well as a few light showers around san jose this morning. and even seen a little bit of snow. the very top of the santa cruz mountains just south of san jose. we pull out across the region. you can actually see that snow was picking up up in the sierra nevada. 2 officially under a winter weather advisory up there. and we've got cold air plunging into the region as we speak. this is going to keep temperatures in the 50's today and tomorrow. also keep us cool into the rest of the

weekend. just around the corner the time it out for you here 06:45am. widespread rainfall heavy across the north bay and picking up more and more across the peninsula. we've got another about another hour here before we really start to see that heaviest of stuff pushing on in and we'll continue to see it through the 8 o'clock hour. line of showers making its way in across the east bay. notice in there, those areas of blue that your snowfall falling at relatively low elevations. this is a cold april system not used to seeing systems like this. this late into the season. now we will be seeing starting to anyway see some drying conditions by noontime. still some spotty showers in there, peeks of sunshine into the afternoon. you'll be able to get outside. walk the dog for a little bit. but do watch those gray skies because we could see some isolated thunderstorm activity at any point later on into the 2nd half of the day tonight. still staying active spotty showers here and there. middle of the day tomorrow. we also see an opportunity for some

thunderstorm building. here's around 3 in the afternoon. chance of a thunderstorm building in for your friday right there on the peninsula. we start to dry out into your friday later afternoon dry out nicely into saturday. saturday will be consistently good day to get outside this weekend. as for rainfall totals today, anywhere between a quarter and 3 quarters of an inch of rainfall for urban areas. well, just a little bit on top of that tomorrow and into sunday evening, sunday night into monday morning singer last chance of showers before a drier forecast. a winter weather advisory is in effect as we speak and last through 11:00pm on friday. we are going to be looking at multiple feet of snowfall at the crest of the sierra. another foot of it possible at donner summit and a few inches right here in our own bay area mountains. the risk here is that we approach the weekend with some slick roadways and do expect chain controls to be in effect, some gusty winds out of this one as well, which could result in blowing and drifting snow and some low visibility. as for your temperatures today, look how

much cooler we're about to be only the mid 50's at the very warm just 2 days ago we were in the 70's. so this is a full 20 degree drop in temperatures. tomorrow is going to be just as cool and saturday, despite all the sunshine actually stays in the upper 50's for most of us as well. won't be until monday of next week when we're all looking at the eclipse that temperatures really start to notably increase and by the middle of next week, it's back to that warmth with highs nearing 80 degrees. michael. >> you know, they say april showers bring those me flowers. good morning, everyone. taking a live look right now at what traffic tracker. 4 is looking like a lot of green and hopefully it stays like that. we know that those roads are going to be slick, giving you some drive times. you can see 11 minutes livermore to dublin, not too bad. and overall drive time for those of you crockett to may's 16 minutes. walnut creek to 5, 80 11 minutes. you've got a 14 minute commute from castro valley to the maze. stanley andrew to the maze. only a 10 minute commute giving you a live look. once you get to that maze of a

family time. and for many of them, you says that is not happening. >> if there's a villain in all of this, and if there had to be a bill and it would be the bosses would be the technology. >> matt haney is talking about the fact technology makes it easy for bosses have access to employees. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, he says sometimes amounting to a stranglehold on a worker's time. when ends up happening is because people can contact easily at any moment over text or they there is always that is that a lot of people find themselves. >> unable to put the phone away any time, even when they're at the dinner table with their kids or they need a moment. just to take a break. the bill would require california employers to create companywide plans clearly spelling out working and non-working hours. >> employees would have to consent to would all be in writing. exceptions include salaried workers with

well, food service workers in the bay area will protest and medicine. francisco office at this afternoon. >> protests are going to take place 2.30, to 04:00pm mena, san francisco office on howard street. police are trying to bring attention to the lack of livable wages has a rise in inflation in food costs, most food services employees contracted by meta say they're living paycheck to paycheck. they hope this protest is going to be a step, the future to help them with negotiations going forward. from protests to appreciation. that's when workers in san jose are

>> welcome back to the kron. 4 morning news. we're inching on 5.30, here and we're already off to a wet, rainy start. john, is it going to pick up as the morning goes on is yes, we're looking at the next several hours getting wetter and right in the middle of the morning commute. if you're waking up right now and you're thinking to yourself, i got some time this morning. you might want to be that early bird this morning and get to the road sooner than later because we're still relatively calm at the moment. golden gate bridge right here. look at all right. we do have some light sprinkles that pushed in right along the coastline,

mostly up in the north bay. as you can see further south around san jose. we're also seeing a few of those light showers down there as well. and even mixing in with a little bit of snowfall as you head up to the lick observatory, mount hamilton, just east of the city, also have seen a little bit of snowfall mixed in just above skyline, drive up there in the santa cruz mountains. so definitely starting to see some wintry precipitation. that rainfall for us really only accelerates in the next few hours. so here's 06:00am here. definitely seeing some heavy stuff near the sonoma coast line by 07:00am. san francisco peninsula, santa cruz mountains in the north bay. really in the midst of it, we advanced towards 8 and we'll start to see that heavy line moving over the east bay and further inland after that into the inland east bay towards 09:00am look at all that blue. that snowfall in the north bay mountains, as well as south of the altamont pass in the east of jose. going to see several inches of that. up there around about hamilton. so a very active

morning. the most active time of day to day is right in the middle of the morning commute will eventually calm down this afternoon. temperatures are in the 40's to 50's right now. it's a cold one. take a look at cloverdale kelsey bill calistoga. you can see why we have snow in the hillsides above those towns. as we are looking at some 30's all the way down on the valley floor. temperatures later today will still reach the mid 50's that the warmest spotty showers here and there this afternoon. right. those roads are going to be slick right now. those are looking good. you can see it's only a 9 minute commute from the maze over into the city. and traffic does seem to be flowing. go through all the bridges right now. we've got richmond, sandra fell a seven-minute commute over that bridge. and you can see >> traffic flowing. but those roads are going to be what's you may want to take your time. san mateo bridge only a 12 minute commute from 8.80, to 101. of course, that golden gate bridge to 19 minute

spread that the oakland a's not only are abandoning attempts to extend their lease at the coliseum passed this year, but they're in final negotiations to play those interim years at this minor league facility in sacramento. only sad because >> sacramento is really far and it's i don't know. a lot of the fans are going to go over there, sacramento, to see the environment. probably not going to be the same. so that's going to really sad. fans attending wednesday's a's game at the coliseum against the red sox were not surprised to hear the news. >> but some remain skeptical. i just can't imagine these guys playing in mind of a stadium sacramento, but it's 105 degree right? what wait to see what the players association has to say about that. the stadium is home to the sacramento river cats whose owner vidic run a diva. a also owns the sacramento kings. the team that was one step out the door to seattle before his ownership group bought the team in 2013. having gone through what you went through with sacramento.

that was filed in federal court in san jose. announcement is expected at 11 o'clock this morning. so is a police. they've arrested a man accused of carrying out blessing scams. people throughout the city in january. so that's when scammers offer to purification a blessing ceremonies on your money or other valuable items. and during the process, they rob, you the scams heightened during lunar new year celebrations. police chen comeau was arrested in southern california back in february. they say they found items believed to have been stolen from blessing scam victims as well as child during his arrest. was the police one that these often target older members of the asian community. all charges have been dropped against a san francisco sheriff department oversight board member. he was arrested for assault. william palmer was arrested and charged with assault and have been in jail since november. san francisco attorney brooke jenkins says the charges were dropped it

into evidence over the alleged victim's credibility. charges were dismissed on the eve of his trial, but prosecutors before jury could be seated. palmer has always maintained his innocence. well, a north bay santa man is suing the moraine police department after he says an officer tased and arrested him while he was suffering from a seizure. well, on talk to and attorney shows us the body camera video. the arrest. we have to warn you. this might be hard for some of our viewers to watch. >> police body camera capturing the call to brew sprinkles. sanon summer home on the early morning of august. 29th frankel's fiancee at the time now wife called 9-1-1. but when officers arrived, the situation escalated. what is go later

up and down the marin and sonoma coast line. some showers on the richmond. sandra fell bridge. take a look at that. blew up there above san jose and just south of the altamont pass. that is snowfall that is falling up towards mount hamilton in the lick observatory right now. and speaking of that, snow is coming down up in the sierra nevada placer bills low as 1800 feet in elevation. going to be looking at a couple inches of snowfall. so this is really low elevation stuff. we're well into spring now. april, not accustomed seeing this cold of systems. this low pressure drives right in across the region into the evening tonight. cold front is what swings through this morning. and that allows us this line of showers that is going to be the heaviest of rain that we're looking at today. 06:00am starting to see it for the north bay. more so 07:00am for the peninsula. then 08:00am to 09:00am for the east bay and the south bay. that heavy line of rain and strong winds pushes in along with it. and yes, you do notice that blew up in the mountain tops. that is snowfall falling as low in elevation of around 2000 feet.

that gets that are right up there to those mountain tops in the bay area. we will see peaks of sunshine this% afternoon. but do watch for some gray clouds and pop-up showers could come along with an isolated thunderstorm later on today overnight tonight. that's when that low spins right overhead resulting in some isolated heavy showers towards the evening. tomorrow morning, we actually look fairly dry during the morning commute, but mid day we could be seeing a pop-up thunderstorm or 2 right in the middle of the afternoon for your friday drying out after that and saturday looks to be pretty smooth sailing as we move into the weekend rainfall. i'm going to put anywhere between a quarter to three-quarters of an inch of rain across the region. quite a lot considering that we are looking at such a late low pressure system working across the bay and we do have snow in the sierra with a winter weather advisory in effect until 11:00pm on friday. snow level drops to as low as 1800 feet. that's going to put snow in some impressively low levels in the sierra, but also for the bay area. so do expect
