>> news station, this is. at 11. >> good evening, everybody. thanks for being with us tonight for kron. 4 news at 11, i'm grant lotus and i'm noelle bellow. nurses across the bay area are demanding better working conditions. thousands of nurses in santa clara county are back on the picket lines for the second straight day today. while a smaller group of nurses held a rally in san francisco and called for serious situation, satellite city details on both demonstrations. sarah. >> that's right. you can see the nurses in san francisco rallying right here. they say they don't want to strike, but they will. if staffing levels don't improve in here, you can see nurses on the picket line in gilroy. thousands of nurses

in santa clara county are in the midst of a strike for better pay, but they tell us this is about much more than money. nearly 4,000 nurses in santa clara county are on a three-day strike demanding higher pay. they were back on the picket line 3 different hospitals on wednesday, including saint louise regional meanwhile, the county saying it is flown in nurses from across the country to keep hospitals operational over 20 million dollars to bring in staff from. >> agency to support patient care. and we have successfully trend oriented over 1000 individuals. the county is currently offering a 10 and a half percent increase over the next 3 years. >> the nurses are asking for 15% underpaid and course when you when you compare the other hospitals in our county, james mount has been a nurse for 25 years. he says the union has been negotiating with the county since august about much

more than a pay raise. the county wants to float nurses to other hospitals from their home hospital. >> 2 other hospitals now that affects their family life. that affects a lot of things. with nurses mount says they also want the hospitals to increase security. workplace violence has been an issue. we've had several. >> is this is i should say more than several at the hospitals where security was inadequate to protect county officials say they have already reached tentative agreements with the union on many key items, including workplace safety. but still don't see eye to eye on wage increases. also on wednesday, nurses at san francisco general held a rally saying they are facing a major staffing crisis there. and at laguna honda nurses say at us of general alone, they have submitted 1400 complaints in the last 2 years about missed meal breaks and unsafe working conditions. >> and tomorrow will be day 3 for nurses on strike in santa clara county county. officials say the union has not

responded to requests to schedule. >> more bargaining sessions will continue to cover this tomorrow. i'm sara stinson reporting back to you. sarah, thank you. this friday was supposed to be the return of oakland's first fridays, but it's >> been postponed due to rain in the forecast. this monthly event was canceled over the past 3 months because of financial issues. this was supposed to be the comeback. but organizers say there trying their best to now host the event next week. if that doesn't happen, the event will come back in may. for more on the rain that is headed our way. kron 4 s chief meteorologist lawrence karnow is here with the details. tomorrow's the big day, though, right? yeah. tomorrow be more significant rain but still cold temperatures right on through and more showers parts friday as well in oakland. >> making a pretty good call to postpone that. so out the door tonight, you've got some partly cloudy skies around the bay area. some changes are headed our way. you're probably felt that a bit today is that sea breeze really kick in breezy in spots outside the

temperatures really cooling off and now things get a little active across the state yesterday. no rain at all. now we've got some showers and thunderstorms and even some snow in the high country. but there's a big storm swirling out there in the middle of the city. can see it right there. very cold storm. arctic air is coming down with that right on the gulf of alaska will be dropping into the bay area as we head in toward tomorrow morning. so yeah, one front comes through kind of just falls apart as moves by the secondary one, though, that's going to be the one that's going to drop right through the bay area. bringing rain starting tomorrow morning. getting going early on. here we go as we head toward early tomorrow morning, 07:00am boy, we're getting pounded around the bay area. some rain moving on through right for the commute. you'll notice some of that pink and blue in the mountains. that is some snow. could you believe that for april? we'll likely see some snow on and off tomorrow and into friday, too. how about i? thanks, lawrence. these pay frustration is mounting for small business owners. this is in oakland's fruitvale district after several shops in the public market were

burglarized this week. chop owners say there have been several of these types of crimes over the past few years. >> and they need help keeping the market safe and secure. kron four's. dan thorn joining us in studio tonight with more from those business owner stan. >> well, one shop owner tells us he and other merchants all hard-working people and do not deserve to be shaken up like this. he says the city needs to make investments in to protecting the fruitvale district or risk losing these important places in the neighborhood. >> at least for small businesses in oakland's fruitvale public market hit by burglars this week. oakland police say 2 unknown intruders ransacked offices and stole cash and computers from a bakery jewelry store, ice cream shop and electronics repair service. it's super frustrating just to see these these folks, you know. >> working every day. the frustration they have. >> and to something like this happen, it's really disheartening. >> business owner dominic prado says his restaurant

tacos, el al ballet was spared. but the public market is a tight-knit community and crimes like these are a shared pain. they deserve better. we deserve better. >> many of these business owners have been there for over. 25 years. the nonprofit unity council owns the public market. >> they say despite investing more than a million dollars in security, it has not been enough. we're asking for local regional and federal support so that we can be whole again. prado argues the unity council could also be doing more to help the public markets. merchants. he says the organization has failed to make good on improving safety. we've asked what cameras us for a number of things. last year we were faced with job. >> there was a lot of shootings in the area. >> both sides have clashed over the response to crime at the market. but they also agree that outside help is needed to protect these businesses, the support they get also help preserve the neighborhoods. culture i can. the prime will always be here. i think we're we're never going to be out out. red from

man. see him running off is asked to call campbell police to take a look here. car almost crashed into a taco shop in the mission. it happened this afternoon. police say. >> it may be the result of road rage. the card damaged a pillar right outside the business at 18th in valencia, they say the driver took off, but they later found the car involved here abandoned at 14th and the tomah streets. >> your local election headquarters, san francisco board of supervisors president aaron peskin says he's running for mayor. he says he's planning to file paperwork friday morning. >> and will officially announce his run at an event on saturday. >> police in petaluma arrested 2 middle school students for setting off fireworks in the school bathroom. they issued an alert around noon today for reports of an explosion at kenilworth junior high on riesling road. this prompted immediate lockdown that was lifted shortly before 3. no reports, fortunately of any injuries.

>> will they or won't they go to sacramento? the a's are refusing to confirm rumors about team executives trying to finalize a deal today. it would have them play in sacramento for the next several years until their new stadium in las vegas is ready for them. the team's lease at the oakland coliseum expires at the end of this year. kron four's dan kerman reports. >> speculation continues to spread that the oakland a's not only are abandoning attempts to extend their lease at the coliseum passed this year, but they're in final negotiations to play those interim years at this minor league facility in sacramento. only sad because >> sacramento is really far and it's i don't know. a lot of the fans are going to go over there, sacramento, to see the environment. probably not going to be the same. so that's going to really sad.

offer that will make state. john fisher does not want to be in oakland. a's want nothing to do with oakland. dan kerman kron. 4 news. >> the san francisco board of supervisors has voted unanimously to approve legislation to streamline installation of automated speed cameras. mayor london breed road up the measure as part of her transportation goals for the city last year, state lawmakers passed a measure allowing san francisco along with 5 other cities to implement a 5 year safety camera pilot san francisco will install 33 speed cameras on streets with a history of speeding and severe or fatal crashes. >> there's been a change in leadership at the food bank of contra costa and solano. caitlin slye has been named the new president and ceo there. she previously spent 11 years at the food bank before leaving to run meals on wheels. blow she says a lot has changed due to the pandemic. she says donations are down and the organization could always use more volunteers.

in tonight and tomorrow brian to friday to and cold enough, we have more snow. in fact, we're seeing some of that already up on 80 50 and they are required have maximum change. if you had the high country now likely going to be chaining up at times tomorrow. so winter weather advisories up for tonight. >> and that continuing until friday is we're going to see that storm system roll on in unusually cold one, bringing chilly temperatures the high country. how about that 30's for highs tomorrow that snow continuing on friday saturday. the good news. if you have fresh powder to ski on up there, maybe one to 2 feet, maybe as much as 3 feet across the higher peaks. so going on right down northbound on the golden gate bridge. otherwise it's dry out there right now. i think the commute early on tomorrow morning. pretty wet to be careful early on tomorrow. i think that turns more toward showers as we head toward the middle of the day in the afternoon. colder temperatures, though, already beginning to pop up around the bay area. got 48 degrees and timber on 51 in san francisco in 46 degrees in fairfield. so a change in the weather pattern. you probably felt that today. a bigger change coming for tomorrow as this cold storm system really going

to rotate down. in fact, the center of that low may come right across the bay area. that happens. there's really a good chance. we could see some thunderstorms, too. so we're talking rain out there. some snow may be on the local peaks and looks like more of that on the way as we head toward friday. although it'll be more widely scattered, slight chance of a shower as we head in towards sunday. not much. then after that, everything begins to change. looks like high pressure starts to build in and then our temperatures are going to start to warm up. but overnight lows tonight, that's going to be cold out there. maybe not record cold early tomorrow morning. 30's and 40's for april. that's pretty unusual. but tomorrow afternoon, it's going to stay chilly. in fact, these numbers highs only maybe low, maybe mid 50's around the bay area and that is it. so as much as 20 degrees plus colder than it was over the last couple of days. and that's going to kind of settle him through friday, too chance some of that mountain snow all the way down about 2000 feet locally. and then a dry day expected on saturday sunday. there's a chance we could see a couple scattered showers next week. how about that? we call the other direction and we start talking about 70's. maybe some 80's as we head in toward thursday of next week. real

baseball weather. what do you attribute all this to? well, a very strong jet stream is dumb, really diving further south. and because of that, that is bringing all that cold arctic air. but eventually, you know, things start to settle in the kind of topsy-turvy for a while, but eventually nice summer pattern will settle that's just not flash but really is. yeah, it. yeah. thanks. okay. >> alameda county is deploying covid-19 detecting dogs in their health center's. it's a part of a pilot program to identify covid cases within the county's health center's. those dogs are working at the park bridge, nursing home in alameda. they're trained to sniff near a person's feet ankles or lower legs to detect any compounds associated with covid and accuracy rate. they have of 96%. pretty impressive. the dogs can sniff test about 300 people in 30 minutes. very effective. the next phase of this pilot program, we'll focus on vulnerable populations in
