noon, santa clara county nurses are on the picket line pushing for better working conditions will hear their demands. and a live report. >> and a woman says she was attacked in san francisco by suspected worker. what she said led up to this incident. plus, san francisco city leaders are speaking out against a move to change the name of the oakland airport. why this idea has become so controversial. >> from the bay station, you're watching kron. noon. >> thank you for joining us here on kron. 4 news at noon. i'm justine waldman and just into our newsroom right now, there's a shelter-in-place has ordered for a san francisco neighborhood on the sunny side area. the fire department says a construction crew. >> hit a gas line sending a gas leak. this is just a couple blocks away from the sunnyside elementary school. it happened just before 11 o'clock this morning and pg e is working right now to fix and cap this leak. anyone in

this area is being asked now to close their windows and doors. this is a developing story. we're working to get more information. and as soon as it comes into the newsroom, we'll bring it to you here right here at noon. and you can always get updates on our website. kron 4 dot com. and people in san francisco's mission district are speaking out about violence in work that's happening in their neighborhood. and now it's supposed worker attacked a woman over the weekend and it was caught on camera caught 4. sarah stinson has the story. >> i looked out my window and i 2 women beating up another one. and based on how the women were dressed was clear to me that they were prostitutes. this woman speaking up after capturing video of a violent attack happening in front of her san francisco home on shotwell street saturday. but she has to stay anonymous. i see them grabbing a woman by the hair and throwing her to the ground. they're kicking her one point. a woman sitting on

her and the women get offer and just kicks are very hard in the head. the woman who was beaten called 9-1-1. the concern neighbor came down to check on her. and apparently the fight began because she was in her car and the girls were looking inside of her car. and she said, what are you? why are you looking in my car? sfpd says officers found a woman matching the description of the attacker 3 blocks away. they arrested a 24 year-old woman from fairfield for aggravated assault shot will street. is a problem with work. but i'm not used to seeing it during the day. so that was surprising. i was horrified, but i wasn't surprised. this is something where if you've been listening to the neighborhood you've been hearing about this weekly. >> trevor chandler lives in the neighborhood. he's running for supervisor in this district in says ever since barricades were put up on capp street to prevent work, the business has come to shot. well, street chandler says he believes fully staffing. the police department is the

answer for says we actually have true penalties for the johns and the pimps that are doing this because we are so understaffed and our police department. we don't have the coverage to fully staff are human trafficking and trafficking divisions. >> that was sara stinson reporting and there's a petition going around to get license plate readers in that neighborhood. we did reach out to the supervisor, hillary ronen, but we have not heard back yet. 2.16, year-olds and san francisco have been arrested in connection with the shooting death of another teenager at the powell street bart station. this happened last thursday night with police found a 17 year-old boy dead in the plaza. witnesses reported seeing 2 young men running after. they heard what sounded like fireworks. in the north bay. 3 people are recovering after being shot in a safeway parking lot in american canyon. this happened around 4.30, yesterday afternoon and west american canyon road and broadway street police found 3 men suffering from gunshot wounds. they were taken to a nearby

hospital and the safely gas station was taped off as american canyon police. we're on the scene well into the evening. at least one car had what looked like to be bullet holes through its front windshield. and at this time, 2 men are being questioned in connection to the shooting. but no arrests have been made. we'll keep you updated on air and online as we learn more. some developing news now is the ntsb is looking into the plane crash that killed 2 people in truckee over the weekend. and crews at the site continue now to search for the black box that was on board the aircraft. truckee police say the single-engine plane went down just after saturday night while trying to land at the truckee tahoe airport. the times of israel newspaper along with friends and colleagues have identified those killed. this. the ron and naomi petrushka. lebron reportedly worked for a company called up west which has posted condolences to the family on social media and now friends and neighbors are honoring the victims. >> feel this is a sacred spot

headed to delaware's dover air force base to supply jet fuel to the department of defense officials say that the u.s. temporary channel will mostly be used by vessels helping with the clean-up of the key bridge. crews are now working to open up a second channel to allow deeper vessels to pass and the complicated work to remove the steel and concrete from that water is ongoing. the key bridge collapsed a week ago when a container ship lost power and crashed into a support column. 6 people working on the bridge at the time are presumed dead. all right. we're taking a live look outside here at san francisco bright and clear today, carlos in the weather center with a look at how. warm it's going to get today. it was gorgeous yesterday to you. sandra fell got up to 79 degrees yesterday and check out pittsburgh hit 83. some of these numbers from yesterday pretty incredible. san francisco, 69. >> we've got to 77 in santa rosa. you can see 69 in fremont, some nice low 70's and oakland and hayward. it was a heck of a day. we have

more sunshine on tap today. you can see those blue skies out there. we did start off a little bit foggy today. north bay was kind of hanging on to that fog for a bit. still certainly see temperatures a little cooler there in a spot like santa rosa right now to 58 degrees. but we should see that sunshine work in. they're already at 70, though, in san jose. and you see some upper 60's there in livermore and conquered as well. so we're off to the races yet again. wind is nice and calm. notice. it is a little bit of a northerly flow, more of an offshore direction. we're going to see that onshore wind start to return. and tomorrow actually gets quite breezy as work our way through the day. but today should be really, really nice. again, we're not just looking good here, but right across the state in california. now we do have another system that is lurking up in the pacific northwest low-pressure set to knock this high pressure out of the way when that happens, we're going to see a pattern change. but that doesn't happen today. today we have another lovely day out there expecting a high of about 61 in san francisco. those mid 70's out in spots like livermore, antioch concord, about 74 san jose. 76

and a little bit cooler for the north bay. as i mentioned, they started off with a little bit that fog hanging up. they should still get into the 70's. and this is what we've got to talk about next, which is that we do have some rain coming our way. the timing is thursday into friday. i'll be back in a little bit and we will talk more about that. so you can make your plans for the rest of the week. thank you. happening today, the san francisco board of supervisors will hold a protest vote on oakland's do proposed airport name change. >> city officials don't like that. the oakland airport wants to include san francisco in its title. kron 4 s michael thomas has the latest. >> oakland airports proposed name would be san francisco bay, oakland international airport. but even just the thought of it is not sitting well with san franciscans. in fact, city officials are already gathering to schedule a vote on whether they want to officially the possible name. change was announced last week by the port of oakland which believes the name change could bring more travelers to open airport. adding that right now, most travelers don't realize how close open is to san francisco or that it's

even in the bay area. so we asked east bay residents at oakland airport and they thought it would bring more travelers and what their thoughts were. >> i think they should keep it yeah, it's located oakland point. i think it is incomplete because people outside of open don't know the various times also the period don't know too much was keeping >> right after the announcement, san francisco supervisor aaron peskin posted to x, formerly known as twitter saying imitation is the highest form of flattery. and the idea really is a neighborly as a fellow fishes also commented saying they didn't like the idea. the name change adding they've been using the name san francisco since the late 20's making it recognizable to travelers and adding the city name to oakland airportawould just confuse travelers and people this morning say they agree stale one. and why do you think that? >> some people people are going to get confuse. am i going to san francisco, michael copeland sure.

east bay city leaders are speaking out after large crowds gathered at several sideshows of the weekend dominating intersections and causing destruction. >> city leaders are now issuing a warning to people breaking the law. kron four's terisa stasio has the story. >> now, as i've said before and i'll say it again and don't come to with these types of activities. >> that is an mayor lamar thorpe speaking bluntly about this recent sideshow taking over a city street, hundreds gathered blocking the intersection of lone tree way and golf course road at one point. spectators shot off rounds of fireworks. >> guess what? if you come

>> on the road near 98th avenue in san leandro street. the victim's name has not been released. there's no word right now on a suspect. the brentwood police department is looking for ways can legally seize bikes from teens who gather in groups in ride recklessly throughout the city. the police chief says officers are only able to issue citations to teens who ride their bikes to close to cars without getting hit. the chief says he wants the city council to draft an ordinance that would let officers impound the bikes. he noted that many of the teens are not even from wrightwood. instead, they're from oakley in antioch and he says they use social media to coordinate locations. the chief is encouraging residents to continue making reports when they see cyclists riding recklessly on the streets. the statewide minimum wage for most fast food workers in california has officially gone up the most fast food workers can make. now it's about $20 an hour across the state vitality. bowls is one of the businesses affected by this new minimum

wage law. the owner who has 2 locations in san jose telling us this law is going to make it more challenging to run his shops. >> definitely. you know, we're going to have to increase prices to cover the cost. real possibilities cutting hours for my employees, which is that good. and also possibly layoffs for small business. you know, weise is minds of the family business. i have my wife, 2 sons and basically, you know, there's a potential if things don't improve with the higher prices that customers stop coming in, that we will shut down you know, then basically people lose jobs. >> one jack in the box workers speaking to us in spanish tells us it's been difficult to afford basics in california. she feels the extra money will help her pay her rent and for her son's housing at college. >> if more tell you a little bit, it's going to really be a relief for me because things continue to go gas low, paying

expenses. and as i mentioned, helped write my son to with all of those expenses. and so this is going to be a huge relief for for me and my family. again, most fast food. >> workers across the state are not making $20 an hour, but there are some exemptions. this includes restaurants in airports, museums, hotels, theme parks, gambling establishments in some events enters those who worked on the new law says working in these environments are already covered by a living wage law businesses that they can sell bread as a standalone item are also exempt from this law. the law's author says that exemption was a result of negotiations between various fast-food stakeholders. here's what it looks like outside right now at san francisco international airport. a dozen beautiful spring day out there. and kyle is tracking those warm temperatures for us yet again. another beautiful day. we're taking a live look

here at half moon bay. we can see the blue skies are in full effect. people out. >> enjoying a little bit of that. sunshine today will be a day very similar to yesterday. just gorgeous and above average temperatures. today, we will start to see some of the clouds move in. the wind will pick up just a little bit. we're going to get some onshore flow going. we do have a very cold system moving in. so a very big temperature drop happening in our future. so right now, high pressure is in control. and that is what is keeping things so nice and sunny and warm. but we're going have a low pressure system drop in and behind. that is going to be a very cool air mass that will come in. so not only are we talking about some rain and some sierra snow but really big temperature drop. so today, if i take santa rosa's example, expecting 71 degrees by thursday. >> highs just in the 50's. you can see san francisco expecting about 60 today about 50 for a thursday check out conquered. 75 today becomes and a flip that around a 57 on thursday and san jose goes from 70's 2 struggling to get to that 60 degree mark. so let

me show the timing on this for you. tomorrow we see the clouds move in, but we do stay dry. it isn't until thursday that we start to see the moisture coming from this system and then it rolls through. and then we get a little bit of a break on the weekend, but a tiny little chance of a shower there later in the day on sunday into monday as well. and then we clear out we have a nice start to the week next week. this is a looking out for so essentially between about a quarter of an inch of potentially 3 quarters of an inch in some spots. so it's not a deluge, but it is definitely, you know, enough rain to give us a little bit of an extra boost. their and our water year as roll through spring. this is the other component by wednesday afternoon. we're going to see that on shore flow become very prominent. and we're going to get some very breezy conditions out there. so just be ready for that wednesday afternoon into the evening. so let's put that all together. and we've got a beautiful day today, starting to cool down tomorrow with some breezy conditions in the afternoon. very chilly thursday. we're going to be struggling to get to 60 degrees out i think will make it to 60 in many spots. and then a few showers kind of

lingering on friday. the weekend looks pretty good. but that sunday night into monday, a little shot of a chance of a shower there as well. we're just going to roll cool until next monday. once we tomorrow. >> all right, justin, up to the kron, 4 news room. we have learned the 2 people have been arrested in connection to the shooting that took place at the safeway parking lot in american canyon. the shooting was yesterday and now they've made some arrests. one of the suspects has been identified as 18 year-old christian evans. the other suspect is a minor. police say the shooting took place after a verbal. altercation escalated into gunfire. 3 people were injured in the shooting and they're all recovering at the hospital right now. more updates on this story can be found on kron 4 dot com. still ahead here at noon lifts now expanding its program designed to make easier to get a ride from electric or hybrid vehicle. >> and fewer homes are being built in california and housing experts are weighing in on what's leading to this in on what's leading to this decline. you can't leave without cuddles.

and mortgage rates are keeping many prospective buyers out of the market. there's a new bankrate study. >> that shows that the required salary to purchase the average home is now over $110,000. that is a 46% jump in just 4 years. california leads the pack when it comes to the highest salary needed to buy a home. and here in the golden state will need to be making almost $200,000 a year to buy a house, the least expensive state to buy home is a mississippi. and fewer homes are being built here in

california right now, home construction in our state dropped 7% to 2023 compared to the year before construction contractors site higher costs for borrowing materials and labor has some of the factors. they also say certain regulations make it more difficult to turn a profit. they say all of this is resulting in fewer new projects because it makes financial sense for them to scale back construction. however, less housing availability means higher prices for home buyers. and the city of san francisco is reporting losing over 20,000 jobs just in a three-month period. the city controller's office is reporting 21,000 jobs were lost between december 2023 and this past february, the city says while a lot of these jobs are due to the end of seasonal employment during the holidays, a lot of these job losses are also from layoffs in the tech industry. the report also noted that unemployment edged up 3.8% and hiring 10's trends steadily declined, continue to decline.

united airlines. and this time it's a flight traveling to sfo from germany that had to return to the airport after a toilet. >> overflowed into the cap and kron four's rob nesbitt reports, the airline says this incident involved a maintenance issue. >> united airlines has been a hot topic on social media and in the news the last few months. but travel experts are not seeing changes in trends when it comes to bookings. it seems that travelers still find convenience and price to be the most important passengers traveling on a united flight from frankfurt, germany, to sfo friday had a less than pleasant experience when one of the plane's toilets overflowed my deter me from passengers were accommodated in hotels in frankfurt and put on a different flight the next day i spoke with travel industry analyst henry harteveldt about the incident that happened on the united flight between frankfurt and francisco was embarrassing. we don't know the cause of it, whether it was cause behind. >> a passenger who may put something down the toilet that shouldn't have gone down there. >> or whether there was a problem with the lavatory that

serious incidents. the faa has said that it will be stepping up its oversight of united sending more inspectors to airports reporting it has that fo i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 news. >> some pilots may have to be grounded because of planes, supply and delivery problems. united airlines is asking some of its pilots to take voluntary unpaid leave from flying because boeing is experiencing production delays and backup plane deliveries. boeing has cut deliveries to united by about 40%. a pilot's union memo says availability of work block hours is being reduced and voluntary leave will help reduce the excess staffing. the leaflet take place in may, and it could extend into the fall. airbnb is making some changes to its cancellation policy. the online property rental company says it will provide cancellation and refund support for gas. when unexpected things occur, including natural disasters, government travel restrictions or weather events that could

impact renters ability to stay at a location. the new policy overrides a host own cancellation policy and this updated effect. a policy will go into effect june 6th. ride sharing company lyft is expanding its green mode that allows customers to request electric or hybrid vehicles. customers in 22 cities and counties cannot request these vehicles through the lyft app when they're getting right. there were 14 before green mode was first offered to just lift business customers. but now this features open to anyone. the expansion includes santa clara, napa and sonoma counties. officials with the companies say they're working to make the platform more environmentally friendly. they soon be some new restrictions on how long you can have a short-term health insurance plan. kron four's catherine heenan explains. >> crack down junk health insurance. the biden administration has just finalized plans to limit short-term health insurance

plans. 2, 3, months with the option for a one-month renewal. this is a big u-turn on trump era policy that allowed people to have those plans for up to 4 years. last administration took that provision which is very narrow. >> for limited emergency coverage and made a loophole. so maybe the the white house is spending the move as a way to protect consumers, arguing that short term plans. >> do not offer comprehensive care. they're being told you can pay this incredibly low price and that good insurance. but it turns out it's not. but turns, in fact, is not really insurance at all. >> but critics say the biden administration just wants people to stick with it on brand of affordable care saying it is taking away consumer choices and creating another problem. >> creates gaps in health insurance. some health policy experts are calling the rule change. >> dangerous saying that people who get sick now, arlen short-term insurance well have no options. if they hit their

4 months limit outside the affordable care enrollment period. the biden administration is throwing 6 people out of their health insurance and leaving them an insured for up to 12 months. that same policy expert says most short-term plans. in fact, do provide comprehensive coverage and labeling them as junk he says, is wrong. it's not only garbage. it's dishonest because they are the ones who we can. consumers here. so affordable care supporters have been worried for some time that short-term plans would. >> bring in younger, healthier people taking them away from obamacare policies and in the end they won. this new rule is set to take effect in september. >> tesla is facing a racial discrimination lawsuit from the equal employment opportunity commission. the e e o c is accusing tesla a severe racial harassment of its black employees at its fremont plant. a federal judge gave the agency the green

light to proceed with this lawsuit to it now joins 2 other suits filed in alameda county. also related to allegations of racially hostile work environment at the factory. the e e o c says non black managers and employees repeatedly used the n word in order to address black employees. tesla has denied these allegations and the next step now is an initial case management conference. and that's going to be happening in may. and now a trial involving tesla set to begin next week. in a case where a 2 year-old toddler was behind the wheel. a south bay woman has filed this lawsuit. she was 8 months pregnant at the time of this crash in 2018 and she says their tesla was parked in the driveway when her son crawled into the driver seat and somehow turned it on. he says he then crashed into their garage, pinning her to the wall. a neighbor was able to backed the car up and free her and she went to the hospital, though, with severe injuries. a jury is going to determine if tesla is to blame for this crash. happening right now,

santa clara county nurses on strike. this is expected to last for 3 days. kron four's to justice is live for us now in sad say, nurses are hitting the picket line right now. so what are they asking for? what going to mean for patients? >> right day one of three-day strike. they started pretty early around 5 o'clock this morning. and they're kind of all over this we know that there are still out here and they're going to remain out here until around 6 o'clock afternoon. we 4,000 nurses at 3 santa clara county hospitals, as well as 13 clinics are on strike. they are demanding higher pay than what the county is offering. nurses say right now operating procedures dictate the county. >> and can tell which hospital they are needed. that to help out with shorting stoppages, stopping the nurses claim despite being run by the county, each hospital has its own policies and procedures.

the county is offering a 10.5% pay raise over the next 3 years. the nurses want to 15% pay raise to keep up with inflation. now, county officials say almost 1000 traveling nurses have been brought in to work shifts during this three-day strike. this is costing the county of santa clara more than 20 million dollars provide this coverage. we're told the county is facing 2250 million dollars structural deficit as a county organization. and they're asking nurses to come back to the table after they rejected the mediator's proposal which led to the strike. >> committed to ensuring >> that the community has continued access to all essential and need it health care services and that those operations continue throughout the duration of the strike. we also continue to urge are okay to return to the bargaining table. we've made repeated efforts to get our in pa back to the table so that we can reach a fair and sustainable contract.

cars in our weather center now with 113%. yeah. >> we've done very, very well this year. you know, if you could have ordered kind of a perfect season where we've got enough snow, but not quite the deluge that we had last year. the cause so many issues, this would be it. and certainly you can see that beautiful picture that we just showed of zoomed outlook. here is diamond peak where you can see folks benefiting from the other part of this, which is some skiing that's still happening and the sunshine that is out today that they're expecting a little more snow as we get into the next couple of days. we'll talk about that in a second. but today, sunshine and mid 50's with calm wind. it's a beautiful day out there. you can see just how glassy the lake is and how common is that. you also notice we have a little snow on the ground here yesterday and that certainly has melted as today take shape. but we've got a big temperature drop coming for the sierra just like we have here for the bay area. well, today it will be mid 50's in tomorrow. same story you can see by thursday into friday that cold air mass means that the highs will be around the freezing level. so we are looking out for some more snow will be later in the d day on wednesday through

>> the oakland a's and the city of oakland are set to meet today to talk about a lease extension of the coliseum. the current lease runs out after the season and the a's need a place to play for a few years until that new ballpark in vegas is done. so it's not the coliseum. it could be sutter. health park in west sacramento. shanahan reports. >> in general, i can safely say that aaa requirements are different than major league requirements. we spoke with former miami marlins president david p sampson now host of the daily podcast. nothing personal. >> as someone who knows what it's like to run a big league team. he says sutter health park will need major upgrades
