weekend. good evening, everybody. i'm vicki liviakis. i'm ken wayne, 3 bay area cities were the targets of large crowds dominating intersections and causing a lot of problems. trump force theresa here in the studio with more on the message from city leaders. theresa, a can of a key city officials are not holding back saying that they will take action, including issuing fines and >> possible. some jail sentences for those involved in these reckless driving situations. >> and as i've said before, and i'll say it again and don't come to with these types of activities. >> that is and mayor lamar thorpe speaking bluntly about this recent sideshow taking over a city street, hundreds gathered blocking the intersection of lone tree way and golf course road at one point. spectators shot off rounds of fireworks. >> guess what? if you come here with this nonsense, you're going to be held accountable and you're going to regret coming here because we do have the technology.

assaults went up almost 30% in santa clara county from 2019 2022. and contra costa county assault went up more than 40% within that 3 year period alameda county. that number went up more than 45% other violent crimes such as rape and homicide are actually trending downward. that's according to data from the fbi. we'll take a look at this. a pleasanton resident turned in not one, but 3 grenades that were in his tournament to police. and it turns out they were live. >> the alameda county sheriff's office bomb squad plans to destroy the grenades. meantime, pleasant and police are asking the public not to touch dangerous explosives, but instead to give them a call. so it they can take care of >> happening tomorrow, more than 3500 nurses in santa clara county are going on a three-day strike and it might affect services to patients this week. it involves nurses at santa clara valley medical center in san jose o'connor hospital and saint louise regional hospital, they say working conditions to become a

safety concern, which is why they say they want more pay better staffing and more security hospitals tell us they're bringing in temporary staff to make sure that critical units are taking care of. >> we have a dedicated group of leaders and many staff who will be working around the clock through the weekend to make sure that we can adequately orient and train the supplemental staff who will be joining us during the strike to continue those critical services to the community. >> meantime, the county says it faces a massive budget deficit but remains committed to providing a fair contract. negotiations have been on ongoing since the fall. as of now picket lines are set to happen at all. 3 hospitals starting tomorrow morning. >> a man was killed in a hit and run crash in oakland tappan about 6 o'clock this morning near 98th avenue in san leandro street. emergency crews say that they found the man lying in the road. he was dead and no word on the drivers were about. but anyone

with information about the crash is being asked to call oakland police in the south bay. a man was killed after being hit by a car while attempting to cross the street happened about 7.40, last night on saratoga avenue near the harker school and 2.80, police say the victim was crossing the street against a red light when he was hit. the driver is cooperating with police. officers say alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors in this crash. this is san jose's, 7th pedestrian death of the year. >> in the north bay, it might come across a few traffic delays throughout the month. parts of highway 37 will be closed between solano and sonoma counties during the weekends in april and parts due to pavement repair starting april 12, caltrans will be working on one traffic direction per weekend. westbound lanes will be closed and traffic will be diverted on the weekend of april 12 and the 19th eastbound lanes will be closed and traffic will be diverted the weekends of april. 26th and may 3rd.

>> time now to talk about the 4 zone forecast as we get a live look at the golden gate bridge. no fog clear skies. wow warrants. what else can you add to that? well, no lightning today, no hail. i mean, we had quite the weekend of weather. that's for sure. but things kind of quieting down now, at least for a couple of days. going to get back to some wintry weather once again. so let's enjoy that sunshine while we have it. a beautiful look out there right now. nice and clear around the bay area would likely see a couple patches of fog moving along the coastline overnight tonight, but mainly just along the immediate coast with these temperatures outside right now to 73. beautiful evening in redwood city. gorgeous. 68 in hayward. 69 in fremont, 70 degrees in santa rosa. still 70 in nevada on 73 already in concord. and boy, we've got some great weather outside right now, an enjoyable. how about that high pressure overhead? little bit offshore wind today and that brought some nice weather all along the coastline. even clear skies out toward the beaches, too. looks like

overnight tonight there's going to switch gears just a little bit. i think we'll see that sea breeze kick in along the immediate coast enough to bring a couple of patches of fog back along the coastline. otherwise, if you want to get out there and enjoy your evening, go to it. no rain to speak up. temperatures on the mild side. the 7 o'clock cooling things off as the sun sets dropping down in the 50's and the 60's. nice and clear starry skies through the night. all right, lawrence and alexis, gabe documentary will air this spring due to mounting pressure from the community. gabe went missing back in 2022. police found her partial remains. >> in plymouth up in amador county later that year last month we reported that a documentary about her murder would air on discovery. plus, but the family later got word that the network changed its mind. so the family turned to the community to pressure the network to air her story and it worked. discovery-plus says the documentary about will air as planned. >> and for city all improvements may between the

yard. gate and washington boulevard have been effective in keeping people safe. that's according to data from the presidio trust says the changes have resulted in about an 85% decline in cars slowing down some of those roads increase actually in them slowing down some of those improvements include speed cushions, rumble strips, narrower carl car lanes between cyclists and drivers and road signs to make drivers aware of cyclists, a long-term improvement plan in the presidio starts in late summer. >> more issues for united airlines this time. flight was traveling to sfo from frankfurt, germany. had to turn around after the toilet overflows in the cabin. >> unpleasant to say the least spokesperson for the airline says the incident involved a maintenance issue. kron four's rob nesbitt has been talking travelers at sfo how they're choosing their airlines. rob, there's a lot to consider now with this latest addition to the troubles at united.

>> there is kind of a key. united airlines has been a hot topic on social media and in the news the last few months. but travel experts are not seeing changes when it comes to the bookings. seems that travelers still think could be in some price are most important. >> passengers traveling on a united flight from frankfurt, germany, to sfo friday had a less than pleasant experience when one of the planes toilets might deter me from passengers were accommodated in hotels in frankfurt and put on a different flight the next day i spoke with travel industry analyst henry harteveldt about the incident that happened on the united flight between frankfurt and francisco was embarrassing. we don't know the cause of it, whether it was cause behind. >> a passenger who may put something down the toilet that shouldn't have gone down there or whether there was a problem with the lavatory that was not discovered before the aircraft left frankfurt, a united spokesperson said the incident involved a maintenance issue with one of the aircraft's lavatories.

mugs. ♪ bmo ♪ >> as of today, the statewide minimum wage for most fast food workers in california has officially increased to $20 an hour. our capitol correspondent eytan wallace talked to a san jose franchise owner about how he'll be affected by the rates. >> it's officially the law of the land in california. as of today, the new minimum wage for most fast food employees in the state is increasing the $20 an hour as mandated by a law signed by governor gavin newsom last year. but i mean cloak us when oprah me this increase is going to be really, really good. speaking to us in spanish that he said she's been waiting years to see such an increase, a jack in the box employee at 2 different locations for the last 5 years. she says it's

been challenging to afford basics in california, especially now that she has to pay for her rent and for the housing, a person who is away at college. she's confident the new wage will make life a little easier. motel. you love it. it's going to really be a relief for because things continue to go gas >> big expenses. and as i mentioned, helped write my son to with all of those expenses. and so this is going to be a huge relief for for me and my family. but on the other hand, franchisees, we spoke to say the new minimum wage law will make it more challenging for them to run a definitely. you know, we're going to have to increase prices to cover the costs owns 2 vitality bowls locations in san jose. real possibilities cutting hours for my employees, which is that good. and also possibly layoffs for small business. you know, weise is minds of the family business. i have my >> wife, 2 sons. and

stakeholders to come up with standards, working conditions and the gradual pay increase. the council met for the first time last month and is expected to meet again sometime in the next 6 months reporting at the state capitol. eytan wallace. >> kron 4 news. >> to cal works programs that help thousands of families might see their budgets cut in order to help stabilize the state's deficit. one program subsidizes jobs for low-income californians. the other helps families experiencing domestic violence or homelessness. 354,000, california households with kids get cal works benefits each year. and san francisco state senator scott wiener is trying to preserve it. he says the budget committee, he's working on a plan to address the budget deficit without impacting cal works programs. that plan will be released later on this spring. >> for the first time, san francisco's offering affordable housing in attempt to help educators live in the areas that they teach in applications open tomorrow for the shirley chisholm village.

the housing project is in the outer sunset neighborhood on 43rd avenue just south of lincoln way. there will be more than 130 affordable homes for families and individuals with a priority in san francisco unified school district educators and employees. it is expected to open this fall. mayor london breed eeacting to the housing development on social media saying, quote, our public schools are stronger when educators can live near the community. they serve our first affordable educator housing project. we'll create that opportunity. this is part of our work to make san francisco a place working people can afford to live. >> one of the richest retirement towns in the country is right here in the bay area. according to go, banking rates, walnut creek came in number 9 of the top 10 list. number one on that list is rancho palace very base in southern california with a median retirement come up more than $166,000. laguna beach also making the top 10 list

the rise again outside right now. a beautiful look from the east bay hills out toward the golden gate bridge and beyond looking nice and clear right now, not much in the way of wind. just a gentle breeze out there this afternoon. you've got 50 mile an hour. westerly winds right now in the san francisco, 16 in sfo and 40 miles an hour in san jose. but yeah, we're going to see a change in the pattern. coming up, we had a little bit offshore wind today. i think tomorrow we start to see a little bit on shore least along the coastline and just inside the bay with that, you may pick up a couple of patches of fog, but overall high pressure, but that sending the jet stream to the north. so the good news is theg rain is backing off just a little bit, at least for a couple days, but they're still storms out there. the pacifica staying active and that means we're likely to get some rain punching through a little bit later on in the week. but for tomorrow warm sunshine away from the coastline. couple patches of fog begin to move up toward the beaches. otherwise some nice weather that you see here on the models here, too. as we head through the night tonight, patchy fog likely to make return early tomorrow morning as we head through the afternoon that starts to clear

rideshare drivers rallied outside temperatures goes headquarters of uber and lyft today. they say the drivers are dealing with low pay high fees and dangerous working conditions. they believe that these companies are making it hard for drivers to earn a living. >> a lot of the drivers sleep in the car to come from far away from sacramento and they're homeless in their cars. so what humanity is that to someone have to sleep in the car to be able to provide for their families? >> in a statement to kron 4 lifts as we're constantly working to improve the driver experience, which is why this just this february, we released a series of new offers and commitments aimed at increasing driver pay and transparency. kron. 4 also reached out to uber for comment. but so far we have not heard back. the city of

sunnyvale is thinking of launching a ride share service of a tone to help out disadvantage students or other residents get around. the service would cost less than $5. a ride. the city council voted last week to move forward with the plan and start applying for grants. the city will partner with the transportation company called solak on valley hop her to bring the service to sunnyvale and cupertino. we're supporters think that the elderly and students will benefit the most. still ahead on kron for news at 6 city of oakland has a new offer on the table for the oakland a's at lease extension for the team to play at the coliseum. >> more details on that ahead. plus, several bills now making their way through the state capitol aimed at fighting discrimination and harassment at california colleges will take a closer look and put the phone away or pay. that's the message the government is setting out to drivers to try to keep them safe. more on the nationwide campaign aimed stopping distracted driving.

our top story this half hour. >> and oakland business owner is heartbroken tonight after a suspect made off with thousands of dollars in merchandise from her store. saw happened early yesterday morning easter morning. here's a look at the security video shows a man going inside the store and helping himself to a wide array of goods. the owner, clothing designer taylor jay says the burglar made off with ipads phones, clothes bags and accessories. >> the u.s. small business oakland and how tough things have already been for us. you know, small businesses general. it doesn't feel good. it doesn't feel good at all. it's really devastating.

really heartbreaking in it's very discouraging. >> jay has been in business for 10 years and takes pride in the fact that are items are both designed and made in oakland. she says she's rethinking security for her business but has no plans to leave the city. a woman was found dead in a home in san jose. police are investigating her death as a homicide. she was found about 12, 30 yesterday afternoon on mill pond. drive officers say she did have signs of physical trauma, a suspect who was at the house at the time was arrested and booked into jail on a murder charge. this is san jose's 11th homicide this year. >> the ntsb and faa are investigating a plane crash that killed 2 in truckee over the weekend. the victims have been identified as lebron and naomi patrice ca reportedly worked for up west which posted condolences to the family on social media. truckee police say that the single engine tbm aircraft, it went down just after
