kron. 4 news at >> definitely be we're going to have to increase prices to cover the costs. >> eligible fast-food workers in our state just got a hefty pay raise. thanks to a new law that took effect today. but not everybody is celebrating that increase. thanks for joining us on kron. 4 news at 5. i'm grant lotus and i'm noelle bellow. our eytan wallace has all the details and possible impact to consumers. it's officially the law of the land in california. as of today, the new minimum wage for most fast food employees in the state. >> is increasing the $20 an hour as mandated by a law signed by governor gavin newsom last year. but i mean coca. per me this increase is going to be really, really good. speaking to us in spanish. but he said she's been waiting years to see such an increase, a jack in the box employee at 2 different locations for the last 5 years. she says it's been

challenging to afford basics in california, especially now that she has to pay for her rent and for the housing of person who is away at college. she's confident the new wage will make life a little easier. motel. you love it. it's going to really be a relief for because things continue to go gas >> big expenses. and as i mentioned, helped write my son to with all of those expenses. and so this is going to be a huge relief for for me and my family. but on the other hand, franchisees, we spoke to say the new minimum wage law will make it more challenging for them to run a definitely. you know, we're going to have to increase prices to cover the costs owns 2 vitality bowls locations in san jose. real possibilities cutting hours from employees, which is that good and also possibly layoffs for small business. you know, weise is minds of the family business. i have my >> wife, 2 sons. and basically, you know, there's a

potential if things don't improve with the higher prices that customers stop coming in, that we will shut down you know, then basically people lose jobs, but some businesses are exempt from the new law, including restaurants in airports, museums, hotels, theme parks, gambling, establishment. >> and some event centers. as for why this explanation was provided a virtual press conference put on by the seiu union who up to negotiate the law. and those people already covered. but living wage laws that that the airports and entering and businesses that they can sell bread is a stand-alone item are also exempt. republicans say that raises questions if this is a bad law for one company, it's probably a bad law for every meeting at the state capitol. eytan wallace. >> kron 4 news. >> other big story tonight,

dangerous sideshows were out of control 3 bay area cities over the weekend. now leaders are issuing a warning to people breaking the law. the sideshows attracted big crowds in one case there was a hit and run converse co. joining us now live in the studio with. >> more on what officials say they plan to do about the illegal activity to reset grand. well, city officials are not holding back saying that they are going to take action, putting issuing fines and possible jail sentences for those involved in these reckless driving situations. guess what? >> if you come here with this nonsense, you're going to be held accountable. that is antioch mayor lamar thorpe speaking bluntly about this recent sideshow taking over a city street, hundreds gathered blocking the intersection of lone tree way and golf course road at one point. spectators shot off rounds of fireworks and you're going to regret coming here because we do have the technology. it's not just foot soldiers on the ground

info on his condition or how he got onto the track in the first place. police have released new info on a shooting that killed a person near san francisco's union square. they say 2 16 year-old boys have been arrested in connection to it. the victim is the 17 year-old boy. the shooting was thursday night around 9.30, and the how i plaza portion of the bart station off market street? the victim died at the scene. authorities are not publicly identifying the suspects because of their age. the victim has yet to be identified as well. >> in east oakland, a man died this morning after being hit by a car. according to police. the crash was reported just before 6 in the morning near 98th avenue and san leandro street. emergency crews found the man lying in the road. they say he was already dead. the car had left the scene. victim's name has not been released and there is no word on a suspect tonight in san jose. police are investigating a deadly crash on saratoga avenue near the harker school

campus. and 2.80, officials say a man was hit and killed while walking. we're told the driver had is cooperating with the investigation, alcohol and drugs did not appear to be a factor in that collision. more than 3500 nurses in santa clara county are going on strike the 3 day strike starting tomorrow. it may impact services to patients this week involves nurses at santa clara valley medical center, o'connor hospital and saint louise regional hospital. they say working conditions have become a safety concern, which is why they want more pay better staffing and more security. the hospital's tell us they are bringing in temporary staff to make sure clinical care units are taking care of. >> we have a dedicated group of leaders and many staff who will be working around the clock through the weekend to make sure that we can adequately orient and train the supplemental staff who will be joining us during the

strike to continue those critical services to the community. >> meanwhile, the county says it is facing a massive budget deficit, but does remain committed to providing a fair contract. negotiations have been ongoing since the fall. as of now picket lines are set to happen at all. 3 hospitals beginning tomorrow morning. >> take a look. pleasant and police say they were surprised by recent delivery to their departments. front lobby. somebody who lives in pleasanton turned in 3 live grenades say they found them in their garage. the bomb squad responded and destroyed them. police, though, are now asking the public not to touch dangerous explosives and certainly don't transport them. but instead give authorities a call. so the professionals can come out and take care of it. new data tonight suggests improvements made between the r gate and washington boulevard in san francisco here have been effective in promoting safety, according to the data, the changes have resulted in about 85% of cars traveling at

or 2 before things once again begin to change in wintry weather is in the long range forecast out there this evening, though, gorgeous weather out there. just a gentle sea breeze blowing right now across the bay area. look at the numbers outside. how about 73 in santa rosa right now, 72 of laos. 73 in concord. 71 in lemore. 71 in fremont and 72 degrees in palo alto. gorgeous. 65 and clear in san francisco. so really nice weather and a big dome of high pressure. little bit of an offshore wind. can those clouds away? but that wind will start to switch directions at least along the coastline overnight. tonight and tomorrow, more of a seabreeze going to be kicking in and that will bring with it more low clouds and fog. in fact, that seabreeze already beginning to move in along the coastline. that will bring a few more clouds coming our way. but well, if you're headed out this evening, enjoy lots of sunshine, very comfortable. temperatures and nice and dry out there right through the night tonight, more dry weather for tomorrow. after that things begin to change. we'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. all right, lawrence, thank you.

>> driving along california's scenic central coast just became a huge problem. new land slide has forced the closure of another portion of highway one. this between big sur and carmel portions of that road along one and a half mile stretch of the southbound lane just crumbled into the ocean over the weekend about 2000 tourists saturday were trapped in the area because of it. yesterday, caltrans started escorting traffic around the damage lane to get them out. state parks in the region are closed and officials are asking folks to avoid the area. a race to the rescue golden gate, national recreation area. why a man was left clinging to a cliff. >> plus, the biden administration putting new restrictions on short-term health insurance plan. details coming up. >> plus, a situation that's takes another united flight being diverted. why a toilet this time is to blame.

>> the ntsb is investigating a plane crash that killed 2 people in truckee over the weekend. officials have not released the names of the couple who were on the plane. truckee police say the single-engine tbm aircraft went down just after 6.30, saturday evening while they were trying to land at the truckee tahoe airport, truckee police in nevada county sheriff national transportation safety board and the faa are all investigating. >> more issues for united this time of flight traveling to sfo from frankfurt, germany had to return to the airport

after a toilet overflowed in the cabin. a spokesperson for the airline saying the incident involved a maintenance issue. kron four's rob nesbitt has been talking with travelers at sfo about how they're choosing their airlines. he joins us live at the airport with more on that. rob, sometimes there's not really a choice in the matter, but >> ge's united got some bad press lately. yeah, nobody wants to hear about a toilet overflowing on a plane. grant know well and united airlines has been a hot topic in the news and social media the last few months. but travel experts they're not seeing changes when it comes to bookings in the bookings. it seems that >> travelers still find convenience and price to be the most important. >> passengers traveling on a united flight from frankfurt, germany, to sfo friday had a less than pleasant experience when one of the planes toilets might deter me from fly. passengers were accommodated in hotels in frankfurt and put on a different flight the next day i spoke with senior

airline business reporter at the points guy, david slotnick about the incident. was that a safety thing was that thing. was that something else? and it's worth noting that a lot of other things that had similar issues replacing have to then >> had to be diverted because of a 20 lead over power shoot that. well, a united spokesperson said the incident involved a maintenance issue with one of the aircraft's lavatories. the latest in a series of mechanical and safety issues involving the airline. but it did not deter travelers like vincent wong for booking united for us. were not really committee need. >> airline, just whatever is easiest passes that our schedule. that seems to be the industry trend. according to travel industry analyst henry harteveldt. he says that united ceo scott kirby send e-mail to members of the airlines mileageplus. loyalty is program acknowledging the recent maintenance issues and promising an increase of training for maintenance workers. and yes, united has unfortunately had a series of problems and many of them it involves flights to or from san francisco. but i'm not

hearing or seeing any data that's just people are quitting united north of. i think anyone should. >> harteveldt says that the ntsb is not investigating united flight that had the toilet overflow since they only investigate the most serious issues. the faa has said that it will be stepping up its oversight of united sending more inspectors to airports. reporting live at sfo. i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 news at on the list of issues they've had tires falling off, which is a huge, very concerning thing. lavatory definitely uncomfortable for passengers but not necessarily the most serious of issues that they've been facing. >> rob, thank you. >> dozens of rideshare drivers rallied outside the san francisco headquarters of uber and lyft today. they say drivers are dealing with low pay high fees and dangerous working conditions. they believe the companies have made it harder for drivers to

earn a living. >> a lot of the drivers sleep in the car to come from far away from sacramento and they're homeless in their cars. so what humanity is that to someone have to sleep in the car to be able to provide for their families? >> in a statement crowd for lyft says we're constantly working to improve the driver. experience, which is why just this february, we released a series of new offers and commitments aimed at increasing driver pay and transparency. we also reached out to uber for a comment but so far have not heard back. the city of sunnyvale is thinking of launching a ride share service of its own to help disadvantaged residents get around the rideshare service would cost less than 5 bucks a ride. the city council voted last week to move forward with the plan and start applying for grants. the city will partner with the transportation company called silicon valley hopper to bring the service to sunnyvale and

cupertino where supporters think the elderly and students will benefit the most. >> for the first time, san francisco is offering affordable housing in an attempt to help educators live in the areas they teach applications open tomorrow for the shirley chisholm village, the housing project is located in the outer sunset neighborhood on 43rd avenue just south of lincoln way. there will be 135 affordable homes for families and individuals and this will prioritize san francisco unified school district educators and employees. it's expected to open up in the fall. mayor london breed posting the following message on social media. quote, our public schools are stronger when educators can live near the community. they serve our first affordable educator housing project will create that opportunity. this is part of our work to make sf a place working people can afford to live hashtag housing for all. >> all right. with that warmer weather which we have been enjoying as we take a live look at san francisco comes

issues with lawrence, are you dealing with allergies? not fortunately, but i know people that are believed lot of folks are deals with that right now on that because everything >> is growing like crazy. get the sunshine like this. you can expect things to even the growing more so. >> yeah, allergies. they're going to be running a bit high over the next couple of days as we're going to see. really nice weather settling in the bay area spring sunshine making return warmer temperatures out there. yeah, everything is growing. that's for sure. so yeah. running a little bit on the high side on tuesday and wednesday and thursday. but we got a change in the weather pattern. we've got a cool breeze coming into town that may be just enough to knock down the allergy account just a little bit thursday, friday and into saturday. but warmer days ahead. you can guess where we're headed. we'll see more allergies on the way other right now. here's a live look right on the embarcadero. see the boats going by the fair is going on through people out there going for a walk and dry conditions around the bay area, enjoying that sunshine. what a nice day. it is been

around the bay area today. breeze a little bit out there right now. you've got some winds, a little bit northwest lead in temperatures. go about 18 miles an hour, 80 miles an hour into san francisco. 15 right now in oakland, 9 mile an hour wind into san jose. but can see more of a seabreeze i think developing overnight today we have more of an offshore wind. you can kind of see right here just brought the clouds away from the coastline. think tomorrow morning we see a change in the weather pattern. more of a seabreeze going to kick in. so a little fog to make return, at least to the coastline. and that helped cool temperatures down toward the beaches, but nice and warm inside the bay in the valleys. high-pressure, be up that us in the jet stream well to the north and that's keeping us nice and dry for at least a couple of days. couple storm want to approach the coastline a little bit later in the week. so we're not done with the rain just yet. we'll talk about that coming up in a few minutes. all right. thanks. a said here we are checking gas prices across the bay is the state a erage. >> has hit $5.10 been going up. san francisco's the most expensive gas coming in at 5.25. our 5.26. rather, sandra

>> don't like oh, >> take a look here. sheriff's deputies rescuing a man they say was clinging to a rock face after falling off a cliff last night according to rescue crews. it happened in the golden gate, national recreation area near battery alexander, not far from the golden gate bridge is about. >> 7.41. the incident started last night. they say the guy fell 50, maybe 60 feet. a chopper was able to spot him. they used a line too help hoist him up. this guy is lucky. no word yet on his exact condition. now.

>> a person in texas has tested positive for the avian influenza. hawaii is known as the bird flu. the department of state health services says the person had direct exposure to dairy cattle, presumed to be infected. the patients who experience eye inflammation as their only symptom was tested for flu. late last week. they're now being treated with an anti-viral. the risk for the general public remains low, according to the cdc. this is the second human case of bird flu in the united states. and the first linked to exposure to cattle. the cattle infections do not present a concern for the commercial milk supply. cvs and walgreens say they have received certification to dispense and abortion pill at stores. according to a statement from officials with cbs, they're about to start filling prescriptions for mifepristone in massachusetts and rhode island in the next few weeks, cbs plans to expand to more states where people are allowed to have an abortion. walgreens says it
