clifford live for us now in san francisco details. charles, thanks for joining us. >> good afternoon. yeah, right by providing better wages and more job protections. on monday, dozens of rideshare drivers rallied outside the san francisco headquarters of uber and lyft. >> they say that drivers are dealing with low pay high fees and dangerous working conditions. they believe that these companies have made it hard for drivers to earn a living. a lot of the drivers sleep in the car to come from far away from sacramento and they're homeless in their cars soul. what >> humanity is that to someone have to sleep in the car to be able to provide for their families. they are also concerned about the growth of

self-driving car technology and worry that it could one day put drivers out of work completely. it would affect a lot of people and the economy. >> where they without a job. in a statement to kron 4 lyft said we are constantly working to improve the driver experience, which is why just this february, we released a series of new offers and commitments aimed at increasing driver pay and transparency, adding that drivers will always make at least 70% of the weekly writer fares after external fees. but drivers we talked to said that after they pay for insurance car maintenance and fuel, the profit they are making is barely enough to survive on. >> rent is high. food is really high to as well. gas is high. so it doesn't compare and that even you get a ride for $4.3, $1, not even with the gas price or are at right now. >> kron 4 also reached out to uber for comment, but we have so far not heard back. all right, back live now of those protesters were here, a 3rd street at the uber

headquarters, but then move down to berry street to the left headquarters were by oracle park. they probably are wrapping up just about now. but for now in san francisco, charles clifford kron, 4 news. >> charles, thank you so much. the city of sonny bill's thinking of watching a ride share service of its own to help disadvantage residents get around the service would cost less than $5 arrived. the city council voted last week to move forward with the plan and start applying for grants. the city will partner with a transportation company called silicon valley hopper to bring the service to sunnyvale and cupertino. we're supporters think that the elderly and students will benefit the most. more than 3500 nurses in santa clara county are going to go on strike tomorrow. the three-day strike is demonstrating what they say needs to happen in order to help patients kron four's. michael thomas has the details. read a strike was approved by 97% of the nurses part of the santa clara county nurse association. >> see that working conditions

have gotten so bad. it's now a safety concern. they're asking for better pay better staffing and more safety. the systemwide strike involves more than 3700 registered nurses at santa clara valley medical center, o'connor hospital and st. louis regional hospital all planning to walk off the job tomorrow to begin a three-day strike as they can't reach an agreement with county officials for a new contract. these negotiations have been ongoing since last october with a focus on salary benefits and the nurse to patient ratio, nurses say the county is not negotiating in good faith with the county says it's currently facing a massive budget deficit but remains committed to providing a fair contract. the walk-off may affect certain services offered by the hospital, but staff at the hospital tell us they're currently preparing and bringing in temporary staff. >> we have a dedicated group of leaders and many staff who will be working around the clock through the weekend to make sure that we can adequately orient and train the supplemental staff who will be joining us during the strike to continue those critical services to the

community. >> as of now, the picket lines out to both county officials and the nurses association for a comment but have not heard back as of yet as we get more details from officials will keep you updated that. the very latest on the newsroom. i'm michael thomas. send it back to live in studio. >> another united airlines flight headed to san francisco international airport had to be diverted this time because of an overflowing toilets. the flight took off from frankfurt, germany friday afternoon before having to circle back after a maintenance issue with the plane's toilet. that's according to the san francisco chronicle. the plane was a boeing 7, 7, 7, this is not video from that incident. passengers were accommodated in hotels in germany and then put on different flights the next day. this is just the latest in a series of mechanical and safety issues involving united airlines. on friday, another united flight that took off from san francisco was diverted to denver after reporting a engine issue. the ntsb is now

investigating the plane crash that killed 2 people in truckee over the weekend. officials have not released the names o the couple that was on the plane at the time. but they are. we are getting some details now from the times of israel newspaper who was identified them as lebron and naomi patricia of california. lauren reportedly worked for up west which posted condolences to the family on social media. truckee. police say the single-engine tmb aircraft went down just after 6.30, saturday night long. glen shy or drive an olympic boulevard while trying to land at the truckee tahoe airport. neighbors describe what they saw during that crash. you're like a big. >> i like it was basically like that. and then i just heard like a. like that kind of surreal it in a sense why? why planes going over my house like that at that time of night.

>> the ntsb says its investigation involves 3 primary areas. the pilot, the aircraft and the operating environment. westbound 80 is closed just west of soda springs because of a crash. this is according to chp truckee, a big rig hit the rear of a caltrans sander vehicle causing the entire cab of that big rig to eject from the truck. the drivers of both vehicles walked away, though, with minor injuries. westbound traffic is currently being diverted at the state line and also at the donner gate. and another setback for a storm battered section of highway one along the central coast. there's a new landslide that is closed. another portion of that historic roadway between big sur and carmel by the sea. a nearly one and a half mile portion of the southbound lane crumble into the sea on saturday, just south of rocky creek bridge. about 2000 tourists were trapped in the area because of this. caltrans says daily convoys will lead a

central travelers through the closed area from 8 in the morning until 4 in the afternoon. officials are asking people to avoid the area. hard to avoid the sun. today, though, taking a live look outside here at the embarcadero in san francisco. it is quite gorgeous out. there's we kick off the month of april. kyla grogan in the weather center with details. it's nice out there today. you all. when do my lunch break taking in as much? that is that could you can see people kind about about here in san francisco. >> it is just wall-to-wall sunshine out there in these temperatures reflecting that by warming up so quickly. 74 degrees right now in santa rosa. we're at 73, annapolis to the north bay. is the warmest spot out there. you can see though concord, 71 71 in san jose and even san francisco downtown now kind of moving into upper 60's sitting there at 67 degrees. so we are certainly much warmer than we were this time yesterday, especially if you're in nevada, right? you're upwards of 10 degrees got a notice that that's for sure. as we take a look at stormtracker 4 there you see the big picture here. we do have some action

over the 4 corners, but we are very quiet in california. just beautiful high pressure in charge right now, allowing for that sunshine and for the warm-up. and that will be the story today. and tomorrow, a wind is also relatively calm. we've got a little bit of a breeze there in fairfield, san jose about 14 to 16 miles per hour. but everybody else, it's a pretty quiet day weather wise. so tonight's going to be beautiful, mostly clear night. we are going to see a little bit of patchy fog roll in in the overnight and i'll show you that just second. but temperatures will be very mild tonight. so that will be kind of a nice evening. and as we look here at fog cast, you can see we're little starts to build in this evening along the coast and then we do see some of that valley fog, reforming as we get into the early morning hours. however, tomorrow it will dissipate quickly and will be off to the races with sunshine again. and more warmth does expect tomorrow to actually be a warmer day. then today, then we have a pattern. change will talk more about that. a little rain in the 7 day forecast. i'll talk about that and come back in a bit. pleasanton police for surprise. but a recent delivery to the

fast-food workers in california get a raise. starting today. minimum wage goes up to $20 an hour. >> but that also means possible increases in food prices. kron four's will tran in pleasant hill with the details. affective immediately approximately 500,000 fast food workers in california. they are getting a raise from. >> $16 to $20 an hour. this was actually signed into law last fall. but today is the day it takes effect. so what does that mean for you? there's a good chance. your favorite items like its starbucks mcdonald's burger king, the national chains more than likely. we'll be charging you more. here's the thing. you need. 60 restaurants are more across the country. so if you own a stand-alone shop, this will not affect you. you need that amount and more if

necessary to meet that threshold for $20. and our for fast food workers. here's the thing. employers, many of them pushed back on this saying they simply cannot afford that, that they could be doing hiring freezes. they could be doing layoffs. and in worst case scenario, they will be passing along the difference to you, the customer. so i got a chance to talk to some customers this morning. here's what they had to say about possibly paying more. >> i think they need more. they work really hard, especially here at starbucks. i see them busting and i think they need a lot more. you don't have a problem paying more if necessary. i don't. i don't. i really don't. i think they deserve it. and they're hard working almost a necessity just because of the cost of living you know, i mean, it these people have to live with other people i think it's going also be a strain on on the businesses. but i'm for it. he says he does not mind

paying more if it means that they get $20 an hour. >> here's the thing. governor gavin newsom said maybe a generation or 2 ago, many people thought he was teenagers that worked at fast food locations been now it seems it's mostly being handled by adults the average age being 26 years or older. and those people tend to have families and they need the money to take care of their families, which is why $20 an hour is now the law of the land in california. >> for the first time, san francisco as offering affordable housing in an attempt to help educators live in the areas that they teach applications open tomorrow for the shirley chisholm village. the housing project is located in the outer sunset neighborhood on 43rd avenue just south of lincoln way. there will be 135 affordable homes for families and individuals and will prioritize san francisco unified school district educators and employees. it is expected to open up in the fall. posted the following

all right. taking a peek outside. why do here showing us the city looking out towards the east bay water looks nice of this. so sunny, the weekend was. >> quite lovely as well. we're hoping the sunny streak warm streak continue. yeah. so i want to take a look again. it because telling just seeing look at this picture and then take your eye to the center of the screen a little to the right. >> i think there might be a wedding setting up right there. can kind of make it out here to see if folks that right there. yeah, i think they may be picked a good day. everybody. anything you're doing outdoors today. its stellar outside, right? you see lots of folks kind going by on their bikes. lets folks out walking the dog and just enjoying this beautiful weather. it is here to stay for a couple of days. then we are going to see a pattern change will get to that in just a second. but right now, let's look at these temperatures. 71 in san jose in concord. 74 in santa rosa. you know, even oakland is is that 66 in san francisco at 65 so it's nice out there. really nice if you're taking the dog for the walk. today is the day we can take the long walk, take your time. and frankly,

it doesn't matter what time you take that walk, it's still going to be comparatively. really nice temperatures and really lovely so i want to take a look at climatology really quickly since we are in the first of april. let's take a look at march in amusing santa rosa. as an example here, we had 19 days that were below normal. we had 2 that were normal and 10 that were above normal. so all told your little bit cooler than average for the month and that if we looked at our our rain totals and you can see that we picked up on friday, by the way, an inch of rain in santa rosa. we are right about where we should be. we've got just over 4 and a half inches of rain. now. what does april hold? you might think, okay. so we're done with the rain. not exactly right. so i'm here is where we're at for averages. if you look back to october first, obviously we're doing really well for our water year. also, good snow pack out there. so that has been great. but let's take a look at the bigger picture here. you know where this is going right? as we get into thursday, another shot of rain and some sierra snow coming our way. so april is going to bring us those april showers that hopefully

lead to some gorgeous flowers. i'm already starting to see some of those gorgeous flowers out and about. i was driving this weekend up in sonoma county. but there you go. some more snow expected of chance of it, at least as we get into the next 7 days. now today and tomorrow, beautiful, sunny and above average. and then we'll get some clouds in on wednesday. that will cool things vown a little bit. and there's the rain coming in thursday into friday morning. and that will certainly cool us down. here's a look at your extended forecast is pretty good. looking one, especially tomorrow. my goodness. it will be gorgeous. and then as i mentioned, a few showers on thursday. but right now, next weekend looking pretty good. i think we have a chance of a shower. it's going to be on sunday, but we'll cross our fingers that that does not come together. back to you. thank you. not in north bay where you can expectsome traffic delays this month. parts of highw 3will be closed between. >> solano and sonoma counties on some weekends, caltrans will be working on one traffic direction at a time. westbound lanes will be closed and traffic will be diverted. you can see here by the map what's going on. but that's happening. april 12th that

for gas in california. now $5.10. san francisco has the most expensive gas in the bay area. $5.26. sandra fell just a little bit cheaper by one cent there. the least expensive gas in the bay area of the valais hope fairfield area at $5.9. and soon there will be new restrictions and how long you can have a short-term health insurance plan. the biden administration says the cap is meant to protect people from junk health care coverage. but critics say it's going to leave sick people without any insurance at all. our washington, d.c., correspondent hannah brandt explains the controversy. >> the biden administration is making short-term health insurance even shorter. crack down junk health insurance. the new rule limit short-term health insurance plans to 3 months. but the option for a one-month renewal that reverses a trump-era policy allowing people to have the plans for up to 4 years. the last administration took that provision which is very narrow for limited emergency coverage and made a loophole so big you

could drive a truck through a whiwe house official. john dawe edinburgh says this new cap or tax consumers because they argue short-term plans mislead people into thinking they have comprehensive coverage. that is a scam. they're being told you can pay this incredibly low pricing, a good insurance, but it turns out it's not good in terms factors are really insurance at all. but critics say the biden administration is taking away consumer choice in a way that could do real damage creates gaps in health insurance, cato institute health policy expert michael cannon caused the rule change dangerous. he says now people who get sick while on short-term insurance will have no options if they hit their 4 month limit outside of the affordable care enrollment period, the biden administration is throwing sick people out of their health insurance in the event of an insured for up to 12 months. plus, he short term plans do provide comprehensive coverage and says labeling them junk is wrong. it's not only garbage. it's dishonest because they are the ones who we can consumers here. but the white house insists its change will improve health care. they have the coverage they need. and if they get sick, they can

reports. >> you need that's the city that to take action and to prevent this from happening to us. this is not fair. this easter sunday. this is the sunday that we should all be spending time with our loved ones and enjoying this day, not having too, you know, cleanup last. look at this. that's exactly what oakland clothing, designer taylor jay had to do easter morning after being notified or flagship store on broadway had been burglarized. >> it happened about 05:30am, in the morning after breaking the glass in the front door. security video shows a man coming inside the store and helping himself to a wide array of goods being a small business oakland and how tough things have already been for us. >> you know, small businesses general. it doesn't feel good. it doesn't feel good at all. it's really devastating. really heartbreaking in it's very discouraging. >> jay says the burglar was in the store for 15 minutes and made off with ipad cell phones and thousands of dollars of

contra costa county. it's right near the fort franklin canyon golf course. video shows people lighting fireworks during the sideshow activity then at around one 30 in antioch were people were seen blocking the intersection of lone tree way and golf course road for another sideshow. spectators here also setting off fireworks. and police did arrive, though, to break up the crowds in oakland. another sideshow here. it happened about 2.45 at 51st street and telegraph avenue. that's on the tennis called neighborhood. when officers arrived, they say cars began to disperse and you could see some people in the video just hanging off of the cars showing us how dangerous the situation can become. and oakland police are investigating a sideshow that ended with a hit and run according to police. the driver involved in the crash got into another car, drove away before officers arrived. this happened about 8.30, saturday night on burma, road. no one was hurt, but the investigation is ongoing. the family of a man hit and killed

by a garbage truck in san jose last month is now suing the company that owns and manages the truck. the crash happened at the intersection of elm street d mendree street near san jose airport. police say the man was crossing the street when the truck owned by green waste recovery made a turn and hit him. police say the driver of the truck stopped and waited for officers arrive. the lawsuit alleges that the truck did not stop at a stop sign, but instead rolled through it, hitting the man from behind and ran over his body. san jose police are still investigating. the white house says president joe biden will go to baltimore to get a firsthand look at the federal response to the collapse of the francis scott key bridge, our dc's raquel martin has more now on what we can expect from this visit. the biden administration says it is laser focus on trying to get the sport back up and running. >> the baltimore port is one of the busiest in the nation and local leaders. there are warning that if federal

leaders put this on the back burner, the damages could spread across the u.s. economy. >> the white house says president biden will head to baltimore friday to show his support following the collapse of the francis scott key bridge. this administration will be with the people of baltimore every step of the way since the bridge collapse. the biden administration has surged emergency resources to try quickly reopen. the port president is continuing to lead a whole of government approach to the collapse. that includes a 60 million dollar down payment to start bridge reconstruction is going to be additional funding needed to get this done. timeline is going to be complicated. it is a complicated a scenario that's because additional funding will need bipartisan buy-in from congress and the constitution. we have responsibility for infrastructure sunday, nebraska republican congressman don bacon said he just wants to make sure the pay out is fair it does have a role with a stretch. i don't think it should be the sole,

talk about our forecast look here at a cruise ship that's pulled into the embarcadero. visitors getting a lot sun today. if they're heading up to tahoe, they're going to be well come with a lot of snow as well. yeah, that's right. but a good day to be in san francisco, though. you've picked a good one there, folks here on the cruise, i want to take a yosemite because this is half dome. and, you know, we've got another 2 feet of snow. >> we saw this going to having a friday that is want to show you much higher up this a pile of snow has gotten. of course, the question becomes how much more snow will we get in this season? you can see a little bit on the ground here as we go to tahoe and incline village. it's a beautiful day there today. a little bit cool out there about 45 degrees, but lots of sunshine people. but the they're kind of enjoying this. and you can see lot of people out today come taking it and i can't blame you. the sunshine and the fresh snow kind of doesn't get any better than but the question is do and we get the next hit and that will be thursday. you can see some snow showers showing up into the weekend, looking out for some additional snow and it does look like it's going to

be another significant system. now, obviously, we're going a little far out from it. but we're taking a look here. you can see that some of the models are showing that it's cold enough that we could see an additional 18 to 24 inches in part of the sierra as we get through the weekend into the beginning of next week. so obviously, that's good news for resorts and for anyone who likes to ski. meanwhile, back in the bay, we are just basking in the sunshine. you're taking a live look from mount tam beautiful day out there today. and not only today, but tomorrow we could see we're expecting temperatures to go even higher before then we will pull back and settle back down to earth as we get into thursday as a front comes through, we start to see a few showers roll in kind of changing the pattern of our forecast next weekend is not looking too bad us. we'll talk about that when come back with your extended forecast and also if you've been hearing about this eclipse, that's going to be happening a week from today. and you're wondering what can you see if you're in california? i've got some information and some answers for you to make your plans. so stay tuned. we'll geek out about eclipse is when i come back in just a bit. all right.

press tone in massachusetts and rhode island in the next few weeks. they also plan to expand to more states where people are allowed to have an abortion. walgreens is saying it plans to start dispensing it within the next week in california, new york, pennsylvania, massachusetts and illinois. in the south bay hazmat team and the bomb squad investigated odd odor after 3 people were taken to the hospital. crews responded to an apartment building in san jose. i lee avenue right near 2.80, saturday night. this hazmat investigation forced all the residents to evacuate the building. investigators say they did not find anything suspicious. but 3 people were taken to the hospital because they were having some trouble breathing. it's unclear what caused their complications. residents were allowed to return to the building around 1 o'clock yesterday morning. israel's military has now withdrawn from garza's largest hospital after a two-week raid and what israel is describing as a major battlefield victory. the military said it killed some 200 militants and detained hundreds more and on

capitol hill, both democrats and republicans are speaking out about the biden administration's handling of the israel-hamas war. our washington correspondent reshad hudson has details on what they're saying. lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are sharpening their tone towards the biden administration for its involvement in the israel-hamas war. >> maryland democratic senator chris van hollen says the biden administration needs to be tougher on israel for how they're conducting this war. netanyahu continues to essentially. >> if the finger. so the president states and we're sending more bombs that doesn't make sense. then holland says it's time the biden administration used its leverage to get them to change course. also my view is that a partnership needs to be a two-way street, not a one-way blank check with the american taxpayer dollars. the white house is trying to convince netanyahu to find alternative methods for the planned ground

at 10:00:06am, peaks about 11, 12 in and by about 12. 22 and totality. obviously is not going to be on the map for us. if you wanted to see totality, probably have to go all the way to texas. really will be the the closest place for us, i think will be texas. but even in texas, you can see where those yellows and oranges are. this is the climatology of cloud cover, meaning we're looking at the history of that day and what kind of cloud cover they generally have. and you can see down in parts of texas they have between about 30 to 50% of cloud cover. so the better shot at it would actually probably be up in those northern reaches of new england. now, let's act like we're in a plane. we're going to fly the path of totality. so we're here in mexico heading into texas to show you which cities are in that path. austin, texas, waco, texas, the dallas fort worth area. then we head into parts of arkansas and you can see hot springs little rock. you are going to be in that too. so you may friends and family are getting ready to have a big party. i have some friends in
