>> news station. this is home. 11. >> now at 11 heavy snow and strong wind gusts creating current blizzard-like conditions in the sierra tonight, this video out of lake tahoe. and tonight we have special team coverage on what you need to know about the whiteout conditions. good evening and thank you for joining us for kron. 4 news at 11. i'm dan thorn. we're continuing to track a major

snowstorm in the sierra as well as local conditions this weekend. the problem storm to our north is forcing ski resorts to close in scenes like this blanketing roads right now, only cars with four-wheel drive, equipped with snow, tires and chains are going to be able to cross donner summit and highway 50 into south lake tahoe. and we want to take a look right now at both the bay area and south lake tahoe tonight, caltrans telling people to not travel to the sierra and to stay home and standing by with a little bit more on the lookiof the conditions out. there is a day-long, a deal. >> hello, dan. yes, and you know, they're about to get more snow tonight. another band of heavy snow in the overnight hours and we're still in that blizzard warnings. you can see the radar is pretty busy here in the bay area. we're starting to see another round of showers moved through our area this evening for us in the bay area. that activity will diminish. but the snow. i'm keep going overnight in tahoe

as we'll get to that in a bit take a look at the hollister area and the coast of central coast near monterey. there is actually a tornado warning the earlier this evening over there. so you can see now that area is all cleared. and now the activity they're getting a break over there. and here's that line and some light showers here in this is the activity you can expect through tomorrow morning. we'll still be unsettled weather pattern until at least thursday. so yes, we have the central valley looks like it's getting all that rain now. wind speeds. there's a bit of a breeze that should be tapering off by sunday morning. but then by the afternoon, that should pick up again. and so for us in the bay area as that rain starts to taper off, what you can expect, widespread light showers throughout the day tomorrow. we'll show that to you in the extended. but for now, the next weather headline will be the temperatures. we're going to be chip dipping down to the low 40's here, especially for the north bay. so a santa rosa, you're about 6 degrees down than you were this time yesterday. a frost advisory will be posted

overnight until 09:00am tomorrow with temperatures down to the low 30's and upper 30's. when come back, we'll talk about the sierra snow and more rain in the forecast in the bay area. back to you. all right, gail, thanks a lot. as you just mentioned, sierra nevada continues to get pummeled by this power.ul storm. >> a long stretch of 80 and several ski resorts still closed tonight because of the gusty winds and all that snow kron four's man harry caught up with chp in truckee for more on how things are looking up there. and >> the officer says if you're not in the area right now, don't go there. they're trying to get the roads cleaned up and to do so. everyone has to stay off of it. >> highways completely shut down and cars broken down have become familiar sights in truckee, california highway patrol officer chris patten, the station near 89 south i-80. he says 80 won't be open anytime soon. this looking towards the summit if you can see it. so it's a it's a white out right now. >> we're trying caltrans is

trying the best they can to get the saying thing up. >> it's probably not going to be today. more and more than likely tomorrow. it's it's still pretty treacherous up in the top. he says last night they did see some people braving the roads. but today was quieter. people are actually i think they're staying home and >> and just in time, the fire probably, he says chp and other emergency responders are doing what they can to help people in need. >> all the vehicles have four-wheel drive and good tires to hopefully allow chp officers. >> to stay on the road. it's my job to make sure people are safe. so i have to drive up. there it i've there twice today and it's. >> you can snow plow driver kyle franklin says the snow is wet and heavy. he's broken parts of his plow trying to remove i've been in truckee. 44 years. >> and operator, labor hood right here for about 6 years. and this is a pretty good storm. it's not record

camera captured a window that appeared to have been shot out. can police are also investigating a series of burglaries at businesses in temescal alley. investigators say a number people broke into the stores and stole merchandise on friday morning. the burglars ran away before police got there. but business owners are hoping, but these burglars eventually get caught. >> i got a call and the early morning on friday from our property manager. and soon as i saw his name on my phone in the early knew that something was not good or 2 guys. they came earlier in the night and jumped the fence and scope sally out and then they came back later on with the truck and they came and broke the windows and just filled their bags up and then took it out to the truck and drove off. so. >> anyone with any information about these crimes is being asked to call oakland police. in the north bank. the police have arrested a man accused of setting a fire inside a target store. we're told the suspected arsonist caused more than 4 million dollars in

damage and lost merchandise. this video from last saturday showing the fire burning in the paper towel aisle. the store has been closed while repairs are being made. he accused arsonist has not been named police say they're thankful for the community's help and finding the suspect. the rain didn't stop hundreds of people from protesting in san francisco today. they were calling for a cease-fire between hamas in israel. video from the citizen app showing protesters marching through the financial district. this march is part of what's being called a global day of action for palestine. san francisco police say the protest escalated though and became violent with assault and property damage reported some of those officers responding to the protests were injured and a protester also was injured. the protesters say they do not believe their demonstration was violent. video from the citizen app also showing new yorkers showing up in mass crowds marching in support of palestine to the thousands of

people there in the streets. this all coming as israel and hamas are still in talks to release the remaining hostages. john fund also witnessed a large demonstration taking place outside of la city hall. they marched by the thousands downtown los angeles. >> calling for a permanent israeli cease-fire in gaza. we are 5 months into one of the worst genocide of the 21st clearly not a genocide. we you know, a government or genocide on saturday, israel tentatively agreeing to a six-week cease-fire and the release of some 400 palestinian hostages in exchange for 40 israeli hostages. but the deal is not done and the fighting continues. the u.s. completing

its first airdrop of humanitarian aid into gaza saturday with 3 military planes dropping 66 pallets containing 38,000 meals. >> facing starvation, displaced palestinians run to the food. in war-torn gaza. israeli attacks have killed more than 130,000 people since the fighting began last october. according to the hamas-run palestinian health ministry, at least 10,000 of those killed are most of the casualties are civilians. israel launched its offensive in gaza following hamas's october, 7th attack on which militants killed around 1200 people and abducted some 250 >> saturday's demonstrations unfolding in cities around the globe. france and germany now calling for an immediate cease-fire following a horrific incident in gaza city thursday. >> and which more than 100 people were killed after israeli forces fire on a crowd

right. take a look at this video sugar bowl resort posting from donner summit on acts say they got some digging to do and say last night they had about 2 feet of fresh snow fall. there. sugar bowl, though, says they're going to be a reopening tomorrow, but

you've got to plan on some delays as they're going to have to do some avalanche mitigation and also dig out the resort and the roads. it's a lot of snow to get rid of. they say they're planning on some terrific skiing and writing. well, back here in the bay area, sfo, seeing some delays. you can see the slick runway out there. kron four's gayle ong joining us with a look at the forecast to >> hello. yeah. more snow on the way for the sierra for the rain for us at activity starting to taper off. so will still have some leftover widespread, a lingering showers for sunday monday, tuesday, wednesday. here's our satellite and radar. you can see how busy it has been. even some lightning strikes. we had at least 2 tornado warnings over at halas service or coastal areas that central coast and in the central valley. so front, very unstable air there. you can also see all the snow, not only sierra we're talking about the north coast here over by ukiah in cloverdale. so a north bay mountains are getting some dusting on the mountains, even maybe mount

hamilton overnight. we'll show you that on the futurecast. so right now we're just seeing another round of showers moved through the bay area and maybe some breaks in between. here is the futurecast overnight. this is an hour from now. take a look at clear lake. you could see some snow up there in about an hour and then east of livermore and then maybe a little bit of snow over at now. hamilton down there and this is 06:00am you can see more snow is popping up on the map and then here's at look widespread scattered showers for sunday morning. and maybe some breaks in between like places like fremont and san jose. and then this is lunchtime. similar situation here. so just keep that umbrella and the rain gear handy for the day. m and then you can see dinnertime as well starts to get a low bit of a you know, you mix of some showers and clouds, but the bottom line stable air and unstable weather and you notice we have a winter storm warning are in clear lake and then this is a blizzard warning that should be ending tomorrow morning. but it will

still be a pretty treacherous to get out there. that will take some time for caltrans to how those roads. and as you heard earlier, the ski resorts to dig out so here's expecting maybe one to 2 feet of extra snow and it will be chilly in the morning. so temperatures are already down to the 40's. watch out for that frost advisory over in the north bay where temperatures you'll notice inland will be down to the 30's and then maybe we'll see some sunshine. the end of the week on thursday, friday. >> fingers crossed for that sunshine. it feels like i going with the rain and you know, and maybe a broken record next saturday. it looks like we have rain in the long range goodness. all right. thanks. a lot of cancer. okay. take a look at this. some new video from a kron. 4 viewer, some sleet falling on the ground in el sobrante. >> a little girl out there enjoying this viewer telling us that they haven't seen this in a long time. and for that child, there, they probably have never seen of course, a really fun and welcoming sight for that family in el sobrante

in the north bay. the city of sonoma has opened a warming center for residents looking to get out of the rain and out of the cold this weekend. these could be a lifesaver is, of course the shelter can be found at the haven parking lot in west sonoma street, a limited number of blankets and pillows will be available. service animals are also allowed inside as well. kron 4 is your local election headquarters. more than 150 supporters welcoming adam schiff, the united states senate candidate with a standing ovation at the firefighter kennedy testing center in sacramento this evening. that's where he spoke to a crowd and took part in a meet and greet afterward. and this is all part of what the shift campaign is calling the california for all tore featuring stops today and tomorrow in southern california, the central valley and throughout northern california. >> i want to make sure that everyone california knows that i'm going to be a senator for every part of california. i want to make sure that the

folks in the central valley know i'm going fight for clean water and clean that i'm going to fight in the north for broadband access and available accessible, affordable insurance for their homes. i want to make sure the big cities of folks know that i'm going to fight to bring back life in the big cities to the unaffordability of housing in the epidemic of homelessness. so we're going to teach every part of the state and urging voters to turn out. and so far the reaction has been wonderful. >> schiff stores going to continue tomorrow in san diego, san francisco and salinas and wrapped up in los angeles on monday. and that there is ships opponent, democrat katie porter, voting in orange county today. she's a congresswoman, of course, she cast her ballot and brought her 18 year-old son to vote in his very first election. she shared her message to voters. >> they want to see washington change that they need to send people to washington to do things differently. so the only democratic elected

official running in this race who has never taken corporate pac money. that makes me different. make, though, is not for sale. nobody's vote in our nation's capital should be for sale. >> and that's something that i think appeals to democrats, republicans and independents. >> porter is going to be in san francisco tomorrow for a meet and greet and republican. steve garvey is campaign confirms that he has no publicly scheduled events this weekend. well, barbara lee's campaign is organizing, get out the vote efforts. it all comes as a new la times. uc berkeley, a poll shows that garvey is now really leading the race with 27%. and adam schiff with 25%. but within the margin of error for first place, the results show porter in 3rd with 19%. and lee in 4th with just 8%. and a reminder, kron 4 is your local election headquarters. join us election day next tuesday for live results all around the bay area. that coverage begins right here at 8 o'clock.
