6:02 pm
i'm grant lotus and i'm vicki liviakis joined alongside the chief meteorologist lawrence karnow. lawrence, this is a big deal. yeah. big deal easily. the biggest snowstorm of the season thus far in effect. this could be dangerous too you head up in the high country. you get stuck up there in the high country. you're not prepared. well, this could be very, very dangerous up there right now. here's a nice live look at the yosemite valley. the storm system really has unfiltered in their yet to see the clouds coming in. but there's a ton of snow on the way and worry of maybe some avalanche conditions to coming up as well. greater taller. you see the snow just beginning to come in. now we see some rain at lake level, but the snow levels will start to fall as we head through the night tonight as that cold air begins to mix in. so a major winter storm brewing. this going to be a big snowstorm of the season and a dangerous blizzard conditions. so you can see the combination of heavy snow and very strong gusty winds. some of the forecast now for some of the gusts across some of the ridge tops about 115 miles per hour down below that, you could be talking about 70 some 80 mile an hour winds. so you get
6:03 pm
stuck out there and that's going to be all kinds of trouble. we're talking about 6 months feet, maybe really even lake tahoe level. there. and even more than that across in the higher peaks 10 12 feet of snow. so dangerous driving conditions without a doubt likely going to whiteout conditions at times. and you can expect not only delays, i think see closures on the highways i-80 likely to close at times as well. you're just going to see so much snow. they're not to be able to get the snow plows out there declared out in time a blizzard warnings away down the foothills of the sierra nevada. you see that orange here all across the great lake tahoe area all the way in the mammoth, the area as well. and well. now we're looking for the possibility of some avalanches and this is probably going to be extended. i think up in that whole area, too. other watches are posted until 4 o'clock in the afternoon on sunday, you're seeing some very strong winds up there. that's going to pile up. a lot of those snow drifts across some of the mountain ledges there. and of course, those give way and cause some avalanches snowfall. here's a look in the bay area likely see some snow to get up toward clear lake could see maybe 3
6:04 pm
to 6 inches and the high country. well, which is really going to be coming down. 48, i have 4 to 8 feet of snow going to be common. 10 plus feet across some of the higher peaks. important thing that we want to get out to people right now is to stay off the roadways unless is it an absolute emergency. >> stay home. stay safe. that's the message. california's office of emergency management is sending out tahoe residents right now, the as we just heard from lawrence, be a bracing for what the national weather services calling the most ferocious storm in the last several years. residents are preparing by stocking up on supplies like food and gas, some resorts or even shutting down ahead of the storms because conditions really could get very dangerous. but this time the storm. attract skiers and snowboarders up to the sierra. a kron four's gayle ong spoke with an oakland resident who is up in the high country now, gayle. >> yeah, we'll she planned

6:06 pm
combined with very heavy snowfall that could cause extensive tree damage, an extended power outages. and carr says she is ready for it she's staying in kirkwood. she shares these videos at kirkwood mountain resort thursday afternoon. kirkwood used to be off the grid it. there's a generator appear if the electricity goes out. >> but we finally got underground electricity. that the electricity goes out. there's there's a backup diesel generators that i hope we don't. >> to use at the at the resort. >> and car learned a lot after traveling to the sierra during the winter months for over 10 years, we brought up couple of coolers last night and basically we've just got close to keep us warm we think will be able to weather things through to monday night. hopefully we can get on sunday. but, you know, at least monday night we'll have enough food weakens ground for tuesday. >> well, glad she is out there is safe. and while the winter storm warning and blizzard warning are slated to expire sunday, it will still take
6:07 pm
time for ski resorts and caltrans to take out. so it's a good idea check on those road conditions and give have some patients for the resort. you know, gayle, i figured there are 2 types of people, people that run into the snow and the people that run away from it. yes. and you know, as she has or supplies ready, also checked in on a former neighbor in south lake tahoe. she had. >> she said she's all stocked candles just in case, okay. thing to hunker down, you know, care for the power outages be really can't go up there. yeah. tomorrow, exactly. that's that's the key point safe travel window over at this point. all right. all right. thank you, sir. >> it's been raining all day in parts of the bay area and there's potential for thunderstorms as well as we getting to the next few days. it was soggy here. this is santa rosa. earlier today. rain started to come down this morning. there were reports of really strong winds as well in the area.

6:15 pm
back to big story tonight. the weather and that is a shot from our mount tam cam >> treason precipitation. >> yeah. blustery out there in ireland, lawrence. they would
6:16 pm
call this a dirty day. is that what they called an island a dirty day like this like? especially after we had the nice weather yesterday, right? i mean, we have that spring-like weather temperatures in the 60's and the 70's and boy winter come just slamming back into the bay area. now that rain is falling across the bay. we're going to see that intensified. think as we head in toward tomorrowe and that's going continue right into the weekend as well. tonight, yeah, we've got the clouds overhead. we've got the showers that have already begun. the winds have been whipping along the coastline, but republicans see that increase. i think as we head toward tomorrow, the commute, boy, it's been rough out there. you're looking at the san mateo bridge. it's wet out there right now. slow going out there as well. and some spinouts on the roadways just with all of that rain, this all part of a different type of storm system that's rolling in the bay area said the one happened that subtropical moisture from the wine island is a very cold storm roll into the gulf of alaska. and you can see that wide of all that moisture out there. so it's going to come in waves right now. we're seeing the main cold front come through behind that. we'll see more scattered showers, more instability,
6:17 pm
maybe some thunderstorms as we head in toward tomorrow. the main front now moving through the bay area heading to the south bay right now, few scattered showers in the north bay, the most, the heavier activity a little further south. now along the peninsula in the sunnyvale in the freeman, you're seeing more of that rain, some heavier downpours now in around pleasanton and livermore to in some gusty winds as that front begins to that front's going to move on through behind that we get the cold air kind of settling in for the weekend. it's a very unstable air. so thunderstorms. yeah. our likelihood as the system comes through show tomorrow, it's going to be even cooler tomorrow. highs tomorrow. maybe low 50's in the san francisco about 58 degrees and showers into san jose. of course you see some of those lightning strikes. be careful outside. >> chaisson are hosting a west coast conference matchup tonight with the 23rd ranked gonzaga in town to face off with the usf. they need to win to make, you know, the push forward to finding their way into that march madness. next month. all right. you're the

dons to be dancin. erin wilson. >> is on the floor now at chase. getting ready for all the action. >> and this is a big one tonight. good to see. >> yes, the as great as you just mentioned, big update. i am under roof. it is warmer and it is much drier in here. so i'm very excited about that. i got a stat for you. 28 straight games. that's how many games gonzaga has won over us him tonight. if that's not motivation enough, they get to do it in front of a huge chase center crowd. and then obviously they get to do it knowing that march is tomorrow, which means march madness is not that far away. that being said, i talked to some of the guys yesterday, a usf and i them what are the keys to this game? mago jonathan marvel at a junior for them. he said that he needs to stay out of foul trouble. that is what's hindered his country contributions to this team lately. he needs to make sure that he's able to stay on the floor. marcus williams, on the other hand, they need to win
6:19 pm
on the board battle and they also need to make sure that they stop gonzaga in transition. now, that being said, if they can do all of those things and come out on top in this one. well, they set themselves up pretty good going into the conference tournament because a win tonight could even out their standings in conference which could put them in prime position to be the second ranked team in the wcc because gonzaga has to go up against saint mary's for the last conference game as we all know, saint mary's is the number one team in the wcc. that's a tough battle for gonzaga. now, obviously gonzaga is a tough team. and so there they are. 28 23 in all of the country. when talk about rankings usf trying to make sure that they are going dancing. and so tonight with that will for them for many reasons. some of that are some of those edges listed. others are the simple fact that right now. don't need to make sure that they really execute here down the stretch because as i mentioned, they are unranked and they are trying to make it
6:20 pm
into march. man is and everyone loves the cinderella story. this thing would actually be far from the cinderella story that they've been ely in the wcc this year, but closing out strong with definitely put them in position to not only do they. >> but to get into tournament and have a great chance of getting far in the tournament. now that being said, i'm going to let you take a listen to what coach had to say yesterday after practice when they talked about joy, back in a second. take a listen. >> this next game on our schedule. so we have to treat it the same way we treated everything else. but >> is a little bit different. feel a little bit different vibe to the game. obviously playing a top. 25 team an nba arena. so we're excited to the town. the you know, just can't one guy's doing now, you know, are on come together, have to you know more. we come together. the good in long run. >> now we speak about coming together. they're not out here. get gonzaga, nor are the dunns because as you can see, the court is pretty empty. some equipment guys out here shooting around. but that's because tipoff isn't until
6:21 pm
08:00pm. so we got just about a little over a little under 2 hours until the tip is here at chase center. so, of course, we'll be here for the full game and we'll have a full report for you tonight in sports night live. hopefully the dunns able to come out on top in this one and put themselves in a better position as they head toward the conference tournament. i'll toss it back to you guys in the studio. so yeah, the warriors at the >> tonight making room for the zags in the all right, erin wilson, thanks for joining us tonight. they alright, uber's teen account is an option that is finally available now in california, it means. >> younger teenagers can ride alone and uber legally for the first time kron four's catherine heenan is with us now to explain a catholic. >> and as of today, california teenagers under 18 can use a special uber account designed just for them. industry experts say the key to making this work safely. it is done with parental supervision. >> had to do so. and i have

you know, kids said i'm worried about day with their friends, but now i know exactly what they can ago. >> the uber teen account debuted in california today and it means that teenagers as young as 13 can request rides or order food, although only of families are guardians, approve. >> they have, you know, a lot of control and the actions of the teenagers talking about 14 to 17 years old when either right food using over at it's the share a coat of the family. that's that that's the bases uber says parents can live track their child's trip contact the driver directly with questions. >> and only the most experienced highest rated drivers will be used. >> california is actually the last state in the country to an able uber for young teens. it has been running and some u.s. cities since the beginning of 2023, one of the newest features families can set up spending you have a

budget. so we know exactly how going to spend. and is seen where they spend it on what it's considered a nice option for families, but also good for uber. >> a way for the company to expand into a new section of the market. professor banafa says uber will need to build up trust with the new feature, but it has been working well in other places. >> think about something like problem. you know, like think something like, you know, at any kind of a party's they have for the kids. you know, i you know, instead of having him in one car and you have teenagers at a car, you know you're going to but that will take them from point a to point b and make sure that we have responsible drivers. >> uber says the idea bottom line making a life easier for families. the san francisco based company began trying out the teen account idea in canada in 2022. later expanded to u.s. cities. there have been no reports of serious problems with that program. grant.
