at this location. huge number of protesters. we haven't seen people bussed in to this location. >> nothing of that sort. so that's all been good news. but i will tell you that that in new york city. >> they have been for the worst up there. every uniformed officer has been asked to come in and to make sure that things are safe there. also, florida governor ron desantis has said that he will not allow florida authorities to assist in extradition of the will be interesting to see how all of this unfolds. >> that's an understatement. all right. thank you, jeff. that's jeff patterson reporting live from palm beach, florida. well, the san jose police officers association employee who is accused of trying to unlawfully import fentanyl, made her first appearance in federal court today. crowd forces but you spoke to a local attorney who says >> upticks certainly do not help the police union.

>> the executive director for the union that represents san jose police officers, a civilian employee joanne suh govia arrested by homeland security for that deadly attempting to import large quantities of fentanyl and doing it allegedly work computer while on the clock for the union. >> it's so remarkable that right under me. everybody's literally says in their face that this was going criminal defense attorney paula canny says even though so govia is a civilian employee, something like this can impact public perception of rank and file police officers in san jose due to the implications of what is alleged. >> they don't even know that they the head of the police officers association is importing drugs probably distributing it illegally. the optics a matter of horrible. this incident comes at a time when police departments across the country are struggling to attract people to the

>> the justice department is suing norfolk southern over the toxic train derailment that happened recently in east palestine, ohio. federal prosecutors say they want to hold the company accountable for environmental damage. look at that. they claim oil and other hazardous material have polluted waterways and violated the clean water act. people who live in the area say they're worried about the long-term effects as well. the justice department says it wants to ensure the railroad company pays for the full costs of the cleanup. the company insists it will do its part, too help the community recover. >> there was a real midair scare last night for the pilot of a light jet over florida. he had to make an emergency

>> the president and the first lady were in mississippi today. they were visiting a town hit by last week's deadly tornado in the state is just starting to pick up the pieces from that storm's destruction. while also bracing for another round of severe weather set to rip across the midwest and the south for correspondent anna wiernicki is in washington with more. >> president joe biden and first lady doctor jill biden were on the ground in rolling fork mississippi friday, just days after a deadly tornado tore through the town. officials briefed the president on steps they're taking to recover from the twister that destroyed roughly 300 homes and businesses and killed at least 21 people. some of destruction. >> and destruction that you're seeing here. it's going to take years to recover and

rebuild. >> we're starting now. president biden announced that the federal government will cover the full cost of the state's emergency measures over the next 30 days, including first responders, overtime and debris cleanup. there's entire neighborhoods that are absolutely destroyed. marcus coleman with fema says their disaster survivor assistance team is on the ground, helping the recovery process. these are people going to community to community neighborhood, to neighborhood, knocking on doors where they can but also asking friends and family members. we're loved ones might be displaced for the time being. coleman says entire communities we left demolished and their recovery could take years. there are also concerns storms forecasted for this weekend could make matters worse. still, esident biden says the federal government will stand with the residents of mississippi until the area is back on its feet and are determined that we're going to leave nothing behind. we're going to get it done for you in washington. i'm anna wiernicki.

>> and surely after president biden's visit in mississippi to tour the damage, a tornado emergency was issued for lite rock, arkansas in the surrounding area. look at that big funnel cloud forming. this is near a shopping center today. the storm also brought heavy rain, strong winds. hundreds of people have been hurt by storms in the midwest in the midsouth. chief meteorologist lawrence karnow is tracking that a potent system and brings us the latest. lawrence, this is that time of year where they start to see the big clash temperature differences. you've got that cold air from the north that very warm, moist air coming of the south and. >> well, as we start to transition now and more of a summertime pattern. well, we get these big clashes in along those boundary lines. that's where we see the significant, whether these are currently all tornado watches in yellow all the way stretching from texas all the way up into the chicago area. and so we've seen along that just some very powerful storms developing

throughout the day today. and you see the little rocky start to see some of the tornadoes being reported touching down and then stretching eastward near memphis just to the north there. and we're currently very active out there right now this evening, more tornadoes likely on the ground. and you see the reports of more tornadoes to the north as well. so this a very large storm system all the way much of the northern plains down to the deep south as well. and so it's got a long way to go. so we've got tornado warnings right possible tornado on the ground. kind of get an idea of a little hook signature in the radar here. that's kind of a signature of a tornado forming there. so that's we're watching right now. and so very scary weather for them in germantown horn lake, all of branch show, although south haven as well. and just further to the north, we've got another one possibly on the ground. tornado warnings being issued by the national weather service there in the bloomfield and extra duck creek in pike and continuing for the north. guess what? we've got more. but you've got strong storms all along as she threw a st. louis all the way

up in the champagne near chicago. these lines of storms anywhere along that boundary. we could see more tornadic activity. we're seeing a chance of again, a little further to the north of that will be more the issue throughout the night tonight. and all this is going to slide further to the east to one. it does again tomorrow could be another very, very active day. all right. contrast in that we get back to the bay area are looking good out there right now. we've got some sunshine, a couple clouds, some drier weather expected, least mostly dry for the weekend. slight chance of sprinkles in the north bay. other than that looks like some pretty nice weather ahead. all right, lawrence. well, the coast guard returned to base in alameda today. >> after a 90 day cor narcotics patrol. they were in the eastern pacific ocean. and during that patrol crew members did stop 2 suspected drug smuggling boats. they nearly 900 pounds of cocaine, 9500 pounds of marijuana. the crew offloaded the drugs wednesday in san diego. >> today they return to big well comes from families and friends that they're alameda
