>> and now it and widespread power outages continue in the bay area. we're tracking the hardest hit areas and what pg and e is saying about getting the lights back on. it was another day of cleanup around the bay area. hundreds of trees are down just in san francisco. how one specific kind of tree is causing some really big problems. good evening, everybody. thanks for joining us at 10. i'm catherine heenan. i'm ken wayne. at least 5 people have died from yesterday's ferocious storms around the bay area. we first brought you this as breaking news at 10 o'clock last night when a tree. >> fell on a car and the ross more community in walnut creek that killed him. and the coroner's office identified the victim as 79 year-old thomas houston are. he was a passenger in that car when the tree fell. the driver suffered minor injuries. and san mateo county, a tree came crashing down on top of a plumbing van killing the driver. >> he has been identified as 29 year-old cases cruised as of san jose. investigators say

he had been headed eastbound on alpine road just west of 2.80, near portola valley while emergency crews were trying to help him 3 more trees fell in the same area, barely missing the cruise and their vehicles in san francisco. more than 750 trees fell in the city. >> stretching from the embarcadero to golden gate park parks all over the city, lost trees because of the winds and ground oversaturated by all of the storms that have swept through the bay area and one type of tree that was imported to the bay area centuries ago is causing major damage. it's even turned deadly. in some cases they burned hot and intense and especially during fire season when it's rainy they are falling all over the place. it seems we're talking about eucalyptus trees. kron four's dan thorn talked with the tree expert about why these trees seem to find the most yeah. as you mentioned, they are not native to california. they were introduced to the state need teen hundreds. but in

2023, these big trees are causing some big problems across the bay area. the urban forestry expert that we talked to tells us that eucalyptus trees are often very old and are very tall. and they're also not very well maintained. you combine that with the series of powerful storms that we've had this year and destruction has followed. emergency rescue involving a falling eucalyptus tree in the east bay. firefighters racing to save 2 people trapped in a crush pickup truck in newark tuesday. >> in walnut creek, a late night scene shows a eucalyptus on top of a car. a 79 year-old passenger was killed. his driver injured in union city last week. several eucalyptus trees toppled onto homes, forcing evacuations. scenes of these big trees causing destruction have played out in every big storm this year because they're tall because our old because they're large and because they're close to where people live or close to the roads when they come down.

>> they tend to cause problems. doctor igor lauch in a university of california, urban forestry expert says. >> top heavy eucalyptus trees have struggled with resisting this year's strong winds with no help from saturated grounds. but the bay area's eucalyptus trees have not been alone in the struggle. wind gusts of up to 65 miles per hour were hitting parts of the east bay tuesday. i don't think very many of our trees have. >> really being used to those kinds of storms. so it's very difficult to predict how individual freeze will perform. one of their exposed to that level of >> force. doctor lachance, as for people who are concerned about eucalyptus trees or any big trees around their homes, they should consult with an arborist any time. >> all large trees, courts this humans, they should be. inspected by a qualified arborist. >> doctor lachance as even if

eucalyptus trees have been somewhat maintained, issues will be difficult to correct based on their age and their size reporting live in studio. dan thorn kron. 4 news. >> thank you, dan. dozens of homes in kensington lost power. that's after a big tree fell there coming down on power lines and the east bay hills, the tree also leveled offense and brought down 2 other trees. >> starting tomorrow morning, a total of 3 lanes on eastbound 5.80. will be shut down because of storm damage and kron four's amanda hari talk to caltrans about the effort to get the lines back up and running. >> those 2 lanes are still closed because the ground hasn't been dry enough to start repairs just yet. caltrans says they plan to start repairs tomorrow, but that will lead to some more temporary closures. traffic on 5.80, east near the north flynn road exit has been heavy since tuesday morning. >> well, drivers can just see the lanes blocked off on the

other damage retaining wall due to the recent storms. you can see piece of the wall sliding down the hill. all of that dirt is still too wet for caltrans crews to complete the repairs, but they're getting ready to fix it once it's dry, we were actually evaluating the problem. we were getting some equipment put into position. >> because we've got to do some some painting and some grinding on part of that before we can re strike to get some of the lanes back. bart ney with caltrans says safety is their number one priority. >> and there's no risk driving on the open lanes. he says they're evaluating their options to solidify the closed once he put in piles to. >> to shore up the retaining wall, the area where it failed. but they're also looking at the structural capacity of the of the system may warns that drivers need to expect delays. caltrans plans to have crews working temporary fix starting at 5 thursday morning. >> that will result in 3 lanes closed only to open until

about one 30 in the afternoon. we're going to restrict the area and get some of that capacity back so they can use quick math to kind of take a look before they go. >> at what the congestion is like. so they have an idea. >> and then you could look at alternate routes or there's also public transit. caltrans says once they make their evaluations, they will let the public know how they're going to make permanent repairs near livermore amanda hari kron. 4 news. >> well, happening tonight, thousands of people in the bay area still do not have power conference. grant lodes is here tracking the latest on efforts to get that power restored and looking at the map that looks like they still have a ways to go and eat progress has been made no doubt, but it's a big job and heavy rains and strong winds. they knocked out so much power. nearly half a million people at the height of it. it customers lost power in the bay area by this afternoon. early afternoon today pg said 80% of those folks who had

power knocked off. we're back online. but they're still, again, a long way to go. a lot of people or so using flashlights tonight. this is the live pg and e map. it shows a real time conditions as of the last update about an hour ago, you would still about 39,000 customers without power in the bay area. between 36 39,000 at the latest update. new trouble spot, though, that we've just identified this red here me. and this is in oakland indicates between more than 5,000 customers are without power there. this includes 7 area rock bancroft, a macarthur boulevard near 82nd street there in oakland and the east bay is is by far and away the area that is still affected the most next worst would be the peninsula over here. you can see the outages up and down the peninsula a little more than 13,000 customers there still without power tonight, south bay has

about 2000 customers without at san francisco about 3,000 outages in the north bay, not bad at all. 82 customers without power tonight pg and e says it called in extra crews to prepare for the storm bringing in 80 extra crews says they ramped up. but with the winds topping 80 miles an hour in some places, even more reinforcements were needed. some of the storms have come in hotter. >> then expected in some upcoming cooler this one definitely came in stronger than was expected. and, you know, we saw as we all saw the graphics of the eyes of that storm sort of sit,ing over the bay. >> stalling out there pg. not the only organization that ramped up for the storm response. governor newsom mobilizing emergency disaster response teams across the state. here's a look at some of the numbers. 4,000 caltrans crew members are working in. 24 hour shifts to keep roads clear. all the trees down on them. 33 cal fire crews are on

the job 125 cal guard soldiers are out there working. 48 high water vehicles are being utilized. flood management specialists have been deployed 40 times where water has overtaken areas in the state and you have almost 500,000 sandbags that have been distributed. the state department of social services is also working with local officials to try to coordinate supply donations and operate shelters. that's a 22 locations. we have more info about those on our website. kron 4 dot com. ken and catherine. now back to you. all right. thank you very much. grantee tonight dealing from damage from yesterday's strong winds, downed tree. >> fell on the zoo's new aviary. the zoo says no animals were hurt, but 6 birds did fly away through a torn opening employees do say none of the 6 birds left the zoo and workers are confident they'll be able to recover all 6 of them in san mateo county. officials say parks will remain closed tomorrow as

their staff assesses the damage there. they say most of the parts were left with no power or internet access. and with that in mind, let's check the 4 zone forecast as we step outside show you very nice view of the golden gate bridge tonight and kron for meteorologist brittany begley is here well, we got a break. brittany. >> for a while. anyway, i know. and like we say, we all need want deserve it. enjoy it while you can. we have some changes coming our way next week. but let's talk about what you do know, because i'm so concerned with a couple of things radar. the good news finally showing you up. for the most part we are in the clear that's good news. we've been kind of spotty and the gilroy area. so taking a look at the big picture as we zoom down, you can see earlier we are watching just some storms gilroy, but now it's been moved to the south. so some good news not area will continue to watch a coastal flood advisory. this is going to be and till tomorrow morning. so again, it's going to just be looking at flooding in the parking lot in the road. so keep that mind, if maybe you live in an area that usually floods that could be

concerned. the big concern that i really have is just the power outages in our lows. thankfully, for the most part will be in the 40's. we're not dealing with sub freezing temperatures but still to concern. you can see that francisco, 43 hayward, 41, even antioch, 40 as we take a look tomorrow and help plan your day. the good news. thankfully, it's not going to be foggy. you can see that. but the big concern really is just going to be future cast winds. you can see as we roll through the day, we're still going to have wind gusts up to 29 30 miles per hour. and that's just going to be concerned because of all the breezy conditions that we've had. we've had more than 1000 trees knocked down with the yesterday's storm. and now we have additional winds that could cause more problems and t% more power lines being knocked out, more people without power. so as we roll into the weekend, our concerns just really going to those low. so a lot to think about. but for now, i want you to know tomorrow's temperatures, a santa rosa 58. we're going to see in the 50's for the most part. it's just as breezy conditions will continue to track throughout the evening for you. alright britany,

thanks very windows shattered and for san francisco, high rises. >> this is during yesterday's storm. the building's all got notices from the city. ordering the windows be fixed as soon as possible. this has one city official hoping to change building inspection coats. kron four's for us. sara stinson joins us live now in the city with the details. sarah. >> that's where the san francisco board of supervisors president wants to change the building inspection codes after the recent storms busted out windows at 5 different high rises in one week. i mean, he says these buildings downtown should be able to withstand 120 miles per hour. winds. that's not what happened. >> a bird's eye view of downtown san francisco appears to look like any other day. but after a major storm, it's a different story on city streets. class can be seen scattered across mission

street in between sales force, east, building and millennium tower after windows shattered up. both terrifying. >> very unreal. scary to see the power of nature. the street is closed from fremont to beale street on mission. people getting off work downtown could be seen walking through caution tape over glass. some saying they aren't surprised to see this kind of damage after experiencing the wind gust themselves. i had trouble walking across the street, my friend and i were holding on to each other. the building. i work in over at one market was swaying from side to side in the windows were rattling. so i'm not surprised this happened. that's still force east a window each floor from the 11th to the 30th either broken or cracked and that millennium tower, one window broke on the 49th floor window broke it to other city high rises, including 50 california street between the 13th and 14th floors. >> and at 1400 mission street on the 5th floor. this also

happened during another storm last week at 5, 5, 5, california street. thankfully no one was hurt in any of these incidents. all 5 buildings have received a notice of violation from the department of building inspection. the city is asking them to place the windows as soon as possible once it to replace a certified engineer or architect must ensure stability and submit a report to inspectors within 14 days moving forward. this a major concern for board of supervisors. president aaron peskin. there's any silver lining. it was a miracle that nobody was hurt or killed. but this is an accident waiting to happen. >> this kind of storm activity, sadly is going to be the new normal. and it's time for san francisco to our department of building inspection to step up our game and to have new protocols. >> and just discuss those protocols about building safety. peskin plans to hold hearings in april. he wants to

make it so buildings downtown, get inspected sooner rather than later. i'm sara stinson reporting live in san francisco. back to you. >> all right. so thank you very much. developing tonight, san francisco police say they found a body in the water near pier. 39, they're not telling us a lot yet, but at this point, they don't see evidence of foul play. the medical examiner will be conducting an investigation. anyone with information is being asked to call san francisco police. on the peninsula. palo alto police are investigating a crash involving a pedestrian. they say a man in his 80's was hit by a truck yesterday. he died today at the hospital. happened at the intersection of charleston road and commercial street. investigators say a ford f one 50 was making a right turn onto charles road when the man was hit while in an unmarked crosswalk. he fell backwards and hit his head. the driver called 9-1-1. stayed on the

scene. investigators say it does not appear that drugs or alcohol was a factor. any witnesses are being asked to call palo alto police. to restaurants and oakland's jack london square continue to be targeted by burglars. earlier this week, we told you about an incident to the very popular legacy business. >> everett and jones bbq. well, they were hit again. the very next day. kron four's ella sogomonian. joining us now from the newsroom with an la the owners of everett and jones are so dismayed so you can imagine. >> they say they the burglars came back a second day in a for businesses in that area to band together and come up with a plan. >> criminals are targeting businesses in oakland's jack london square. the owners of everett and jones reported the first burglary on monday when their front door was shattered. now they say thieves returned the second day and took off with 2 safes. this last break-in was a very emotional for because my mom, 25 years ago.

>> tried to buy this well, i think it does not want to open up every jobs. >> and she did that any so she would come and stand in a doorway and pray for this building. and with every time it was boarded up. so every time we put the boards on it, it makes me and my sisters emotional because we know how hard i'm other 5 for this business. >> owners say they had to spend money. they don't new cameras and to replace the windows. now the owners of a second business nearby called roasted and raw tell kron 4. they also fell victim to a burglary. milton ashley sent this statement saying we love servicing oakland and the bay area. we take pride in providing healthy food for the community yet it is becoming more difficult to do business in downtown oakland. this is the second time in the last 5 months. we have had a break in. we have customers who come to our location to show support. but when they go back to their cars, someone has broken in and stolen all of the items would make some more

frustrating. we're 2 blocks from city hall. something has got to be done to help small business owners in the downtown area in dealing with this issue. we have elected new leadership in the mayor's office. hopefully things will change. oakland is a beautiful city. we can't drop the ball. we need to do better. earlier this week, the executive director of the nonprofit called jack london improvement district expressed concern and shared that they're working with the mayor to strengthen public safety in the area through walking officers in commercial districts. oakland police did not respond with comment in time for this report. and the owner of roasted in rock told me that they haven't gotten any direction from pv. >> on how to prevent this from happening, saying that they donald 9-1-1, then we're told to call the non-emergency number, which they tried for 2 days and that went unanswered in the newsroom. ella sogomonian kron, 4 news and those businesses are just down the street from opd headquarters. thank you. ella in the south bay, a drag queen. >> became the first to perform at the san jose city council meeting and conference. justin

new at 10 crews in southern california helping rescue 17 animal stuck at a san bernardino county farm, including horses. and as you just heard, some very talkative cows, they say the animals have been taken to a local shelter in santa cruz, the highway patrol closed several roads after trees fell in the santa cruz mountains. this tree here fell across highway to 36 drivers in that area are being told to be careful since are still might be debris in the roadway. pothole. residents in monterey county could return to their homes as soon as friday, at least to check the damage and begin to clean up. the entire community was evacuated 12 days ago when the river levee breached, leaving some parts of the town under several feet of water. monterey county officials say there are no active gas leaks and power is back on for most of the community. however, the water is still shut off and that could still be a problem friday if people are given the go ahead to enter that evacuation zone, residents say

>> the bay area still reeling from the big yesterday. some self-driving cruise cars got tangled up in san francisco. this was last night photos show them driving through a closed street and then getting a tangled up and downed muni wires. it happened at the intersection of leavenworth and clay. some of the crews cars were able to keep going. others had to be retrieved by company employs racing. strong winds not only brought down trees and broke glass windows on high rises in the city. they blew the steeple off a church in richmond. it happened at the end as chapel church of god. it's on 15th

to be a lot like today and the day before a santa rosa. 58, san francisco. 54 happen. bay. 53, even morgan hill. 55. we're going to stay in the 50's. >> up to the north upper 50's. the difference will be thankfully, no rain. but what we will be watching for use just as future cast winds. take a look at your screen right now. we're still going to be the teens. >> but as we roll into thursday morning, we're going to see those gusty conditions. you can see it up to 20 to 30 miles per hour. and this is going to be a concern just because we have consistent gusty conditions on top of the gusty conditions that we've had and that saturated soil. so maybe a tree didn't have an issue with this past storm. but with additional winds, it could cause more problems. so just something to think about on thursday. the good news saturday and sunday. it's going to be clear. it's just going to those overnight lows that we're really going continue to watch for you specially if we still have power outages. as we look at monday, it's dry. but right there in the corner of your screen, more rain on tuesday. it seems like it's a pattern that we're getting rain on tuesday. so a little bit of
