concern working are way ahead into the weekend because our series of systems lately have come along with really cold air along with that. and that means snowfall as had a chance to pile up in the sierra nevada. we've seen those feet up on the feet of snow falls. you can see here at castle peak really having accumulated were at around 200% of average snowpack for this time of year for both the central and southern sierra doing really well for the northern syria, too. now, if we were to see melt off, you would see a lot of that snowfall that feet of snow now moving its way down into small streams and rivers and it takes a warm system to do so. that's actually what we have just around the corner. so focusing od right now. still that cold air and the u.s. the snow piling up in the sierra. we're also seeing some snow in our own bay area mountaintops to a couple of sprinkles here in the bay area. a few light showers around gilroy sprinkle or 2 around san jose. now this does continue today. this low pressure area creating nice dip in the jet stream that's ushering in cold air our

direction. keeping things cold for now. but we see the wind or opening for more tropical moisture in atmospheric river system pulling that moisture and southwest of us down towards hawaii, those warm pacific waters and bringing it right here to the bay area. now, this tropical moisture is going to be on the warmer side of things. so as this of heavy rainfall reaches the bay area come thursday and friday, the concern here is that it's going to come along with a lot of rain, higher elevations of the sierra and road salt in a wash out a lot of that snow pack that has been accumulating for weeks now and not making its way down into our rivers and streams that resulting in the risk of flooding, especially towards the early weekend. so this is going to be something we'll watch closely. it all depends on how much rain we get and how warm those temperatures remain as it gets here. future cast for today is actually showing these nice drying skies. so we get a break from the rain today. today is absolutely a day to capitalize
4:19 am
on. get outside. enjoy will be dry conditions during the day. showers will hold off until overnight hours. 09:30pm, rain moves into the north bay. after that, we see that increase potential of rain and even a few isolated thunderstorms moving into the rest of the bay area during a predawn hours of tomorrow. so this is going to be well after you've got to sleep tonight, 04:45am tomorrow morning as some of our early risers are getting up. some heavy rain pushes through could make for a rough morning commute for earliest of risers tomorrow, but moves out. and then you've also got a dry day tomorrow. so today and tomorrow, daytime hours looking nice and dry for you. now, that's not going to be such the way into this weekend. and later this week, rainfall totals from tonight into tomorrow. really just a 10th to a quarter of an inch, really modest. look, what happens, though, is that atmospheric river gets here in bam. we're looking at multiple inches of rainfall pushing into the bay. and with that same potential up in the sierra nevada. lot of rain on some snowy slopes could result in some washed out conditions.
4:20 am
winter storm warnings do remain till 10:00am this morning up in the sierra as we still have some snow up there. 50's for your daytime highs in the bay area. it's right back to what we're used to. you notice how those temperatures get warmer as rainfall arrives into thursday friday and saturday. highs climbing well into the 60's, right. john, thank you for that. let's get a look at those bridges still pretty slick this morning. but a nice and light. >> 8 minute drive maze to that fremont street exit san mateo bridge that really looks like they're slow down eastbound side. 13 minutes, a 81 to one. a richmond center fell 8 minutes and the golden gate bridge. 37 to the tolls. it's going to take you 20 minutes. well, the white house says it is strengthening its efforts to investigate the origin of the covid-19 pandemic. this after more than one u.s. agency says the pandemic may have resulted from a lab leak in wuhan. washington correspondent alexandra limon joining us live with that story. what are you learning?
4:21 am
alexandra? >> good morning. well, you may remember it was originally department of energy that said that it believes with low confidence that the pandemic originated from a lab leak in wuhan. but now the fbi director says he believes that too. >> the intelligence community is looking into this is something that the president has asked. the white house says intelligence agencies are strengthening their efforts to investigate the origin of the covid-19 pandemic at the direction of the president. believes in support to get to the bottom of this, especially as we look ahead to the future and trying to prevent any future pandemics. former secretary of state mike pompeo says he's glad the energy department and fbi reached the same conclusion he did. it is now good to see that the department of energy has come to the same conclusion that i did. my state department did years ago that this leak came from a laboratory in china. but other intelligence agencies say they believe also with low confidence that the

pandemic began because of natural transmission from animals to humans at a market in wuhan, ohio congressman mike turner says the investigation is complicated by the fact that china has been less than helpful is no direct evidence. we don't have china admitting it. we don't have wuhan lab handing these things are. >> now today on capitol hill, lawmakers will continue to work on a bill that asked the biden administration to declassify any information linked to the origin of the pandemic. reyna. as mentioned that. but is it likely that they're going to be willing to declassify the information? well, that remains to be seen first. congress would have to actually pass this bill. and if they do, it would head to the president's desk. and at this point, it does remain unclear whether he would actually sign that. this might answer a lot of unanswered questions. thanks for that update. >> still to come on the kron, 4 morning news, we're talking about the department of transportation.
