6:14 pm
6:15 pm
6:16 pm
>> happening right now. the 93rd academy awards under way in los angeles and like everything else, things definitely look different compared to years past because of covid the oscars are doing things differently than any e so far this year. >> they're not even doing it over zoom that there's been some zoom for people who are. global when they're accepting their awards. but a lot of it is in person. they're trying to shoot it like it's a movie. it's it's it's just different. it's different now. it's right for a look at what's happening right now, which awards have already been handed out. lots of awards have already been handed out. we're. >> joined now by chris wolfe with our sister station down in los angeles with a look at all the awards happening right now i'm on a red carpet but not the actual red carpet.
6:17 pm
>> it's not the actual red carpet. we're selling the image selling the fantasy for all of our friends up in san francisco. >> take a look at this here. this is our ktla courtyard here in hollywood. we transformed it into a sprawling red carpet experience with the golden, the glitter and all that good stuff around. and of money talks. we are not near the venue. it's a very restricted venue this year. for the first time in a long time because of the coronavirus pandemic. they are no longer being held this year at the dolby theater in the heart of hollywood. just down the street from us. they have moved the whole ceremony to union station. a major and a major transportation hub in downtown los angeles and they have transformed the giant cavernous sprawling lobby into sort of a small intimate dinner theater experience with several levels and tables and soft lighting and boots very limited audience in person this from what we understand, people are being rotated in and out. the attendees are
6:18 pm
limited to the presenters. the nominees and a few of their friends and family are guess. that's it. very small gathering in downtown los angeles. very few media outlets are allowed to be there. that's why we are here and not there this evening. but it's quite a different experience. they want to be covid friendly people, even if they're vaccinated have to be tested several days leading up to the ceremony today. i would imagine they had their temperatures checked as they were entering the venue entering union station and one of the actresses who opened the ceremony. regina king said when you don't see us on camera. we have to have our masks. and when the cameras are rolling and we're all on camera. we can take them off similar to filming a production. but when you're off camera, those masks have to go on. so that's another. element of the safety precautions. big winner so far, by the way, should mention this year. boasts the most diverse pool of acting nominees ever with 9 out of 20 being people of color. viola
6:19 pm
davis becomes the most nominated black actress in oscars, history. and we just learned that history was made in the best directing category. chloe zhao whose parents are from china is the first asian woman to win the oscar for best director for directing the movie nomadland which stars another oscar nominee best actress nominee frances mcdormand. she's won twice, already could be her 3rd time her 3rd trophy tonight. if she wins again. but lots of winners all around. congratulations to the winner so far. good luck to the nominees. coming up. also, we should report daniel kaluuya wins the oscar for best supporting actor for his role in judas and the black messiah. what do you think of that. >> well, if this different, i think it's kind of funny of the year where you are in the awards are so far away. i appreciate all the effort and the obvious that you have all created. what's it like covering the awards from afar.
6:20 pm
>> it's very different. it really is. and and i'm typically assigned to the elton john oscar party every year and you have that energy. >> and the excitement and its shoulder to shoulder. and you're there with the celebrities coming in and out. i was there last year when he first read it is guest earlier in the day and then he left to go to the ceremony and he actually won the oscar for best original song for writing a song for his bio pic rocket man. and when he came back into that venue holding clutching that oscar gold the place erupted in a thunder of applause and cheers. and you could literally feel the ground shaking all around you with the excitement in that room when elton john walked in with his oscar. and so we don't have that at all this year. but we're making do and the entertainment community. the entertainment industry truly wants to start to get back to some semblance of normalcy with all this. so they're doing their best. but it's not the same. it won't be until everyone is back together like we have been for so many years now. yeah. when
6:21 pm
just walk in tomorrow morning along chris and megan. >> the walk along the red carpet as well. and feel like big, big, big stars that they are down there in l a. yeah. that's absolutely and present you that feeling for sure. and it's nice to see this. i'm glad they went all out. and chris, we're going to be checking in with you during our 8 o'clock. 9 o'clock and 10 o'clock newscast tonight. >> so we'll keep us updated on all the glitz and glamour and and celebrations. and i hope you get some champagne too. hate, you could try her sister. and i'm looking forward to spending the rest of the night with you. but all right. we'll see you soon. thank thanks, chris. >> let's talk weather sunday night >> in case you did in case you missed it. hey, there's some rain that fell from the sky today. >> the brits yes, is tracking a few storms that are still out there. yeah. we're tracking some showers continuing for the bay area and that mount tam camp already starting to dry out and clear out there. but let's zoom on in on storm tracker. 4
6:22 pm
because we actually have some cells that are forming for inland valleys in the east bay and for those of you in the south bay as well. we do have a cell right now over livermore tracking some moderate downpours there. and as we zoom on into this cell just south of it. we are seeing some moderate showers just north of sun. also, we could have the threat still of pop-up thunderstorms because of this unstable atmosphere. but we are tracking widespread scattered showers for the south bay as this storm starts to exit to the south and east of the bay area. but as expected, about a quarter of an inch of rain or less really just drizzle for a lot of bay area cities, unfortunately, but napa picking up about a quarter of an inch of rain. and hopefully we start to notice some more showers for those of you with higher rain totals in the east bay valleys and south bay valleys. but we are tracking dry skies out there right now in the east bay in the east bay shoreline over berkeley with

recently. so, i mean, it's about one in every game that you go out there and play. the end of the day, if you leave and you win a series it's a good thing, but we what we want to win today. we i mean, we want to win bad today. we just could didn't do enough offense. we give ourselves a chance. >> all right. it is. so they lost. but the start of street tomorrow in a quick note, the giants beat the marlins today. we'll have those highlights coming up at 8. >> and we'll see you then. thanks, jason and thanks for joining us here tonight on kron 4 news at 6. we'll see you back here in prime time for the new starting at 8 o'clock.
