>>justine: the president is about to talk to reporters about a few different things. >> we creates a country
8:41 am
where everyone does their fair share and we can ensure that there is fair play. to ensure fair play, one thing i talked about was the importance of making sure we implement financial reform and wall street perform. a key component was making sure that a consumer watchdog is in place to police what mortgage brokers, payday lenders and other non-bank financial entities are able to do when it comes to consumers. this is a big deal. about one in five people use these mechanisms to finance everything from buying a house to cashing their checks. we passed a law last year that says we need this consumer watchdog in place
8:42 am
to make sure people are not taken advantage of. we have nominated someone republicans and democrats from across the country have said this is someone who can do the job with integrity and has a tradition of being bipartisan. he looks out for public interest and is ready to go. third this morning, senate republicans blocked his nomination refusing to let this and it go forward with an up or down vote. this makes absolutely no sense. part of the reason we got into the
8:43 am
financial mess that we did is because regulators were not doing their jobs. people were not paying attention to what was happening off in the market. people were not paying attention to who was being taken advantage of. there were people making a lot of money fee and taken advantage of american consumers. there is no reason why we should not have him nominated in to be confirmed by the senate. i want to send a message to the senate that we are not giving up on this. we're going to keep on going at it. we will not allow
8:44 am
politics to stand in the way of american consumers. >>president obama: the payroll tax is about making sure that everyone is doing their fair share and said that the metal cast does not see taxes go up by $1,000 in 23 days. we heard recently intonations from the senate majority leader and from the speaker of the house that they think we should do a payroll tax cut off. the question is at what price to get it done? this is not
8:45 am
about me. they should not extend the payroll tax cut for me. they should not extend unemployment for me this is for 160 million people in 23 days will see their taxes go up if congress does not act. this is for 5 million individuals looking for a job and cannot find a job right now in a tough economy is thought rather than figuring out what can they extract politically from me in order to get this done, they need to be focused on what is good for the economy and what is good for jobs and the american people. i have made it clear i do not expect congress to go home unless the payroll tax cut is extended and unless unemployment insurance is extended. it would be wrong
8:46 am
for families but it would also be wrong for the economy as a whole curia >>justine: we were listening live to the president live at the white house. sixth guests and we will be right back. if tests off f.
