cleanup crews. trees came down onto homes and cars furious similar scenes of damage from pleasanton's to castro valley. tonight, dan kerman met in oakland family that barely escaped the tragedy. like when the wind blows and 80 for a tree on top of your house in the middle of the night. >> we heard a rumbling crash. she thought that it was an earthquake. we saw stuff all of the floor in the fog, that is strange and then, we realized a dream. >>dan: de amazingly, the tree falling did not wake up their children. >> it miss each of them by a few feet each, it went straight to the middle of both rooms. >>dan: the damage is extensive. here is a look at the bathroom which is right

next to the kids' bedrooms. this is a closer look at where the tree made contact with the roof. >> it is amazing. >>dan: the roofs of the tree are very shallow. consider this, this is only half of the tree. the other half went over the top of the house and snapped, falling into the valley below. ironically, this family just bought this house and moved in four months ago. if they will not be sitting here tonight or any of the subsequent nights. repairs will soon get under way. dan kerman, kron4 news. >>pam: jeff bush has more on damage around the bay. jeff >> this tree fell on to this dodge pickup truck. giselle sawyer had just parked the truck five minutes earlier. >> i dropped my kids off to

school and went into the house, i heard a knock at the door and my neighbor said, there was a big crack and a loud pops. thing just >> the truck belonged to her husband, he is out of town on business. third fortunately, the magnolia tree in the 4 yds of most of the impact. work crews off moved and during the afternoon and got to work cutting that massive tree into smaller, more manageable pieces. jeff >> tree services have been busy all day long. >> i had a fleeting thought, a woman's intuition that i should have paid attention to.

up for did buy a tree. >>reporter: take a look at this 40 ft. tree that came crashing down. as i get closer, he conceded it is partially crushing is a backyard shed and it set out a part of the fence, narrowly missing this house right here. the owner of the house says he woke up at 6:00 thinking someone crashed a car into their house. the scary part, he says, just 20 minutes before, he was in the shed trying to get firewood and then changed his mind and. he says that he is really very lucky that no one got hurt. maureen kelly, kron4 news.

>>pam: with our continuing our coverage of the cleanup of the damage in the east bay. charles crawford is joining us live from oakland. >>charles: i am standing at the corner of denison's street and kennedy just off of 880. sometime early this morning a large acacia trees landed on top of these two semi truck trailers. a tree removal service came in. all that is left is a tree trunk. i spoke with the owner of the company who says the last few days have been very busy. >> we were expecting a lot of downed trees. >>charles: the last two days have been busy and this owner says he could not be more happy. >> the wind and rain is good

for business. >>charles: this tree collapsed late wednesday or early tuesday morning. >> it is doing to their raw and the high wind. the tree just could not stand it and flopped over. >> this sort of staying is common in oakland. it's >>charles: the entire tree had to be removed. >>charles: this is a tree that sits next to where the other one was. if you take a look, the branches are barely moving. the winds have calmed down.

>>jaqueline: the wins have calmed down in certain spots that not in others, especially about 1,000 ft.. there is a wind advisory in effect for the north bay hills, the diablo range and the central valley. it will be in effect until 10:00 a.m. with winds ranging from 20-30 mi. per hour. not quite as strong as well we have seen over the past couple of days the breezy nonetheless.

>>jaqueline: a look into the afternoon, sunny skies expected. tomorrow afternoon, windy in some locations. we will take a look at reconditions coming up. >>pam: an arrest has been made in the fatal november 10th shooting that occurred at frank ogawa plaza. the suspect was found in the louisville ky. he could have been staying in one of the occupied tents right before the shooting. at least four other arrests have been made. today is world aids day. hundreds of people gathered at golden gate park to honor and remember those who have lost their lives to that disease. families and loved ones with candles and flowers left in aids--left flowers at the national aids memorial. more than 500

people were at the memorial. >> after so many years i think people hadst did a little bit forgetful of the impact that the disease still has. there are young people getting infected, people in their 40's and 50's still getting infected. there are many people around the world that are not getting access to care. this is a pandemic that is still a very significant issue. valve and a candlelight vigil was held earlier tonight in the castro district of san francisco. several businesses and restaurants are donating 10-15% of sales to aids campaigns that raise awareness. >>gabe: if you have any

>>pam: the big story tonight is a wind damage across the bay. in oakland, look at this massive tree that fell onto someone's home. the 100 ft. redwood fell through part of the roof. the family who lives in this home was at home at the time and fortunately no one was hurt. a very unpleasant surprises, a woman just finished taking her children to school, parked her

husband's drug in the driveway and a few minutes later a 40 ft. cyprus fell onto the truck. >>pam: strong duendes continue to wreak havoc on the santa cruz mountains. in scotts valley, dozens of trees came down across town. electricity has been a real problem all day today. in the valleys, the win is expected to die down. in places like oakland, san jose, fremont and santa rosa are a lot calmer and is still pretty breezy in places like fairfield. also it is pretty breezy along the coastline. 24 mi. per hour winds in half moon bay. the winds are

conditions into the weekend. >>craig: >>grant: unusually strong winds are doing strong damage. at los angeles international, this was the scene. the lights and power went out at lax. that is one example of what the big winds are doing. the cleanup is already under way in southern california. wind gusts have caused extensive damage knocking down more than four of 50 trees and pasadena lawn. at one point, 200,000 customers were without power and 1200 traffic signals were out. the destruction to businesses, homes and vehicles and prompted

officials to declare a state of the emergency in los angeles county. the sacramento area is assessing damage there. it seems almost anything that was not tied down went for a ride in this unusually fraises a windstorm. the santa ana winds cause and all of this destruction, officials are worried about the threat of fire. they are asking people to stay inside their homes this evening. >>pam: now, to a developing story and the seven people shot in oakland on monday. we have learned that the top of that was shot in ahead is improving. family members of the one-year-old say that the swelling in his head has reduced. this is his picture. although he is in critical condition at children's hospital in oakland, haaziq madyun reports there is also new information in this case. this is a story you only see here on kron4.

>>haaziq: sources say a person of interests has been taken into custody in connection to the shooting of a one-year-old boy who remains in critical condition here at children's hospital in oakland. kron4 has learned that what is being described as a melee broke out inside of children's hospital late wednesday night when the course of interest was spotted by friends of the boy's family. deputies from alameda county sheriff's department intervened, the man was wanted for questioning in connection to monday's mass shooting incident outside of a west oakland a liquor store wounding seven people including the one-year-old boy. >>pam: earlier today the father and other members of the family were seen praying for the one-year-old a victim. the father also took time to refute reports that he is not cooperating with

oakland police and their investigation. >> i cooperated to the fullest of liability. everything i know, everything i have seen, i am praying for my son, to get him out of the hospital. he is all i have. that comes first. >>pam: a former contra costa county use officer: has pled guilty to molesting boys. he will now serve 30 years in prison. the plea comes one week after he pled guilty to produce in child pornography. as a part of this agreement he is under a life term requirement to register as a sex offender and will be tracked by gps.

new details in the police brutality lawsuit against bart. today a federal jury rejected the claim by kenneth carothers that johannes mehserle and four other officers used excessive force, the charges surrounding the arrest and restraint of carruthers in 2008. the seven member civil jury unanimously ruled that mehserle and the other officers were not liable for use of excessive force or alleged retaliation against brothers. kron4's spoke with both sides for every action in today's ruling. >> if the jury system applies themselves diligently and listen to the facts, they will render an opinion or a verdicts that is what our system is designed to accomplish. >> what happened in court

shows that if police do not collect evidence correctly, they can get away with it. >> the police need to be held accountable for what they do with their job. i know that there are other people that are going to fight, i hope that people will fight, the way that i did, to bring justice to other people. >>pam: it's that the jury for hours to reach a verdict. >>pam: some tense moments in san francisco connected occupy movement. more than 100 protesters held a general assembly in the streets as police in riot gear stood by. this was the scene near the encampment at justin herman plaza. occupiers moved barricades in an effort to take over the street and the block traffic. police in riot gear quickly came to take down those barricades and move protesters onto the

sidewalk, keeping the streets of it. eventually the occupiers and moved back to justin herman plaza and now the street remains open. in santa cruz, a group of protesters have taken over a vacant office buildings. 30-40 people spend the night in the building. there were seen setting out for a long occupation. protesters say that this occupation is a symbolic gesture because this building was once a bank. police made a brief appearance that have not returned. we will be right back. thaw

still under investigation. the ncaa is investigating a small plane crash in seattle. the plane crashed into a parked aircraft and sparked a fire in the airfield. the occupants were a flight instructor and student, there were taken to local hospital with minor cuts and scratches. a group of friends got more than they bargained for on a fishing expedition of of carolina. it is a shark. the sharks circled the boat for nearly 20 minutes. >>kimberlee: in michigan state chair later recovered after a really bad fall off. her name is taylor young. paramedic's attended
