hello. welcome to the world today on bbc news. a spokesman for the u.k. prime minister rishi sunak says comments allegedly made by major conservative donor frank hester about mp diane abbott were racist and wrong, but he was rightfully apologizing for the defense caused. the guardian claims hester said ms. abbott made him want to hate all black women and she should be shot. he insisted his comment had nothing to do with her gender or skin color. ms. abbott has reported frank hester to the parliamentary liaison and investigations team that was set up after the murder she said the remarks allegedly6. made about her were worrying and frightening. our political editor chris mason has the story. but ry abbott is a political

pioneer, first elected nearly 40 years ago, the first black woman mp. >> whatever else happens after this i think that nobody can take the moment away. >> after that she rose to be jeremy corbyn's shadow home secretary after being subjected to year after year of abuse that multiplied in the era of social media. now, the guardian reports frank hester, a multimillionaire donor the conservative party said this in 2019 "it is like trying not to be racist, but you see down -- diane abbott on the tv and you want to hate all black women because she is there i don't hate all black women at all. but i think she should be shot. the bbc has not independently verified that mr. hester, seen on the right with david cameron in 2016 this, but he is not

denying it. frank hester except he was rude about diane abbott in a private meeting several years ago, but his criticism had nothing to do with herender nor color of skin, a statement claimed. rubbish said this cabinet minister. the comments were racist, adding that there should be forgiveness where there is contrition. a colleague, had a rather different take. i don't think what he was saying was a gender-based or race-based comment. but it was clearly inappropriate and he has apologized. i think we need to me on from there. >> diane abbott said the remarks from mr. hester were worrying, frightening, and alarming. her friend agreed. >> i am anxious and upset on her behalf. she is incredibly brave. she's braver than i am.

political editor. now let's cross to our correspondent. it is interesting that earlier we had ministers doing the media arounds refusing to say the words racist or racism and now at 6:00 p.m. in the evening the prime minister came out with those words. >> there has been a real shift out of the last half hour or so after, as you say, a day of refusing to use the word racist. now coming out and saying that. in the last half hour they released a statement saying that the comments allegedly made by frank hester were racist and wrong and he has rightly apologized for the offense caused and where remorse is shown it should be accepted. the prime minister is clear there is no place for racism in public life and as of the first british asian prime minister leading one of the most ethnically diverse cabinets in history the u.k. is living proof of that fact. there is no suggestion in the statement that he will be giving

the donations back. i suspected that is where the focus will now really shift. opposition parties have been calling the money to be given back all day. that is kind of the questn that remains unanswered by the statement we have just received. i do not imagine it is a question that will die down anytime soon. as for diane abbott, she, as you are there the end of the piece, has reported the alleged remarks to the police. and to a unit called the parliamentary liaison and investigations team over, specifically, the alleges comment that she should be shot. it is a unit that the met police set up after the murder of joe cox, an mp in 2016. they are understood to have been assessing what happened here and we would expect an update in due course. this is something that has moved

on in the last half-hour. that statement from downing street is not likely to suddenly disappear. >> now let's speak to a professor of social policy and race at king's college, london and author of the book the racial code: tales of resistance and survival. professor, it's good to have you on the world today. let me ask you about your reaction to everything you have heard over the last 12 hours. >> good evening. actually, the entire situation is atrocious. this is important. -- abhorrent. clearly the alleged statements from frank hester are clearly racist. and misogynistic. and, most alarming of all, they condone violence against an individual, in this case, a black woman. it should not have taken our prime minister this long to make

a very clear statement about the fact of racism. >> this throws up the question of how black people, especially, black women, are treatedn this country. not only within the realms of politics, but beyond. where are we in terms of race relations in this country? >> we are aggressing at it is regrettable to say, but we are regressing. what we really need is strong, clear, unequivocal political leadership when it comes to these issues. but, i fear delays such as the one we saw today to call out these alleged comments from frank hester give the impression that the u.k., and u.k. politicians are taking a light touch approach to issues of race and racism. let me say this. these comments have been reported just a few weeks.

not even two full weeks following the publication of the angelini review. one year this month following the publication of the review by baroness casey. both of which examine issues of misogyny in terms of culture and violence against women. so, these comments are of concern, yes, because of the concerns expressed by mp's, the inquest -- increased concerns expressed by mp's about their safety. also, because we are in a climate where we should all collectively be championing and campaigning against any violence perpetuated by any individual, not least against women and girls. in terms of the final point that i really must underscore, the lack of political consequence,

courage, and leadership on these issues is really increasing racial divisions in this society. >> it's good to get you on the program. thank you for taking the time to speak to us on the world today. >> the u.k. has demanded answers from the israeli government after a report by the bbc showed medical staff in gaza being mistreated. medical staff have told the bbc they were detained, beaten, and prevented from carrying out vital duties after a raid at the hospital last month. they said some detainees were stripped, kept in stress positions for several hours, or had muzzled dogs set upon them. israel said it occupied this hospital site believing it was used by hamas and that several freed israeli hostages have said they were held there. you might find some parts of this recording disturbing.

>> not for the first time in this war, israeli soldiers have been completely the opposite. one nurse was shocked inside a hospital operating theater. through a window.

overran the hospital. there were chaotic scenes as troops cook -- took control. patients unable to evacuate were moved by medics from collapsing wards. israel says it found wasp up and also medication. the state supports accounts from israeli hostages that they were held there. in the idf footage you can see hospital patients had their hands zip tied, detained outside in their beds and in wheelchairs. this was when troops also detained the medical personnel. at least 49 of them. they were forced to leave their posts and remove their surgical clothing. israel says it did so in case there were concealed weapons and among the 200 arrested were terrorists posing as medics. this dr. remained at the hospital throughout the seas.

before the israeli incursion, risking her own neck to save lives as people were shot inside the grounds. she later witnessed what happened to her fellow doctors. >> it was tough for us to see how the doctors that have bravely stayed at the hospital despite the dangers were stripped and beaten. their hands were tied behind them. they were left in the sun for hours. >>'s hand broken in captivity, this dr. is one of the very few medics to have since been released. he shows the positions they were forced to adopt for hours and said they were also tortured. >> they forced us to ne-yo down with our eyes blindfolded. --we thought they would execute us and bury us in a bit in the ground.

we said our prayers. they were does -- just intimidating us. >> israel says any abuse of detainees is against rdf orders crucially according to the hospital manager that dealt with the israelis during the rate, the detention of so many of his staff left is hospital woefully short of doctors. >> aid doctors and -- eight doctors and 50 nurses were left treating 250 patients. imagine the level of care we could give with no water or electricity in the hospital at that point. during this time, 13 patients and injured people died. >> the israeli army says it operated within nasser in a precise and focused manner and provided equipment enabling it to function and treat patients. but, with the war continuing at more than 40 medics still detained or missing the hospital

has been closed for weeks. >> the foreign secretary lord cameron was asked in the house of lords about the report and described it as very disturbing. >> these are very disturbing pictures and reports from this hospital and we need to get to the bottom of what exactly happened. we need answers from the israelites about that and when we have those it will >> be easier to comment. >>the u.s. have also commented on the bbc report. matthew miller, a state department spokesperson was asked about the report during a briefing at whether the u.s. would raise the matter with the israeli government. >> we reported yesterday regarding medical staff from the nasser hospital in khan yunis. they interviewed three doctors, three members of the staff at that hospital have given detailed accounts of their detention by israeli authorities. they told the bbc they were humiliated, beaten, doused with cold water, forced to kneel i

uncomfortable positions for hours. one was set upon by a dog. i am wondering, is that one of the specific cases you would raise with the israeli government? >> i have only seen the report. i don't know if we would raise it, but i expect we would. that is the type of case we often wades -- raise with them to seek information and make clear, as we always have, that all detainees should be treated in strict compliance with international humanitarian law. >> live pictures are coming in to bbc news of port-au-prince in haiti, where there is a huge ongoing story. protests are currently taking place across haiti. against efforts to try to decide the country's future off the back of the resignation of the prime minister ariel henry who he was stepping down and a transitional presidential council would be created. it is important to stress that gangs currently control 80% of

on the streets as they control the main roads in and out of the capital, port-au-prince. the whole region around the capital is under a month-long state of emergency. a curfew has been extended. important things to bring you up-to-date with. kenya in the last few hours said it will pause deployment of police officers that do to lead an international securing mission in haiti. the u.s. played down the announcement saying kenya's transition deal would bring a new government as assault by nairobi. now let's speak to the founder and executive director of the haiti policy house in washington. wolf, good to talk to you on the world today. the situation is looking ever more dire. >> the gangs have consolidated efforts and are working together against the government at the moment. that is not something that has ever been seen before and also technology is playing a big role in the situation now because the

gangs are using drones to do surveillance on the police. at the same time, the police don't have the same capability to do surveillance on the gangs themselves. he much the police are in a fishbowl with gangs watching over them with drones and other satellites. >> we just heard the canyons aren't sending forces into haiti. where will the actor come from in bringing the city back into control? >> the answer is already there. haitians have been trying to tell the international community for the past 3, 4 years what should happen. it took a long time to listen. they are listening at the worst time when things are going to work they have been. but, haiti, the international community can support haiti with technology at the moment while they are waiting. there is a lot of technological support that the police can use against the gangs like up-to-date intelligence, drones, whatever it is to ensure that

they can keep an i on the gangs and monitor their operations. >> one last question. we saw the prime minister stepping down. this is off the back of pressure from gangs in haiti. does it does not set a bad president? what if in 10 or 15 euros gangs don't like the new prime minister? what kind of a president are we setting for the control of gangs in terms of politics in haiti? >> the gangs are a very powerful influence. to address this, we have to address social dynamics within haiti, within the society itself to prevent young men and women from signing up for these gangs, joining these gangs, to create a safer haiti, safer country. within haiti haitians have to have the solution. they have to have the right tools and right technology. >> thank you for joining us on the world today. >> thank you very much.

judicial process. >> andrew tate, once one of the world's most googled man is adored by fans as a successful model of masculinity and seen by others as a dangerous influence. >> females are barely sent. that's -- century and. tate himself says he is absolutely a misogynist. >> it does not matter if a woman was to be a lawyer, a house maker, or a webcam girl unless she has a man directing her she will [expletive]. >> he says his comments are often misinterpreted but police, teachers, and women's rights groups says his influence is toxic. in the u.k. women have spoken publicly about their experience of meeting him. ev spoke to the bbc last year and is being voiced by an actress. >> there was enough evidence out
