giant dipper. the santa cruz boardwalk's iconic wooden roller coaster turns 100 today. it's been featured in a number of blockbuster films including the santa cruz classic "the lost boys." it took 47 days to build and only cost 15 cents to ride. today it costs $8. the boardwalk held a special ceremony to commemorate the giant dipper. it will happen tomorrow. it's great to see. i can't believe $8 when it used to be so cheap. >> divert -- >> back up! >> i'm back. i'm back. >> maurice: tonight, a golf star arrested. >> i feel like my head is still spinning. >> maurice: the number one ranked golfer in the world now facing numerous charges after a roadside incident with police went awry. >> it was a chaotic situation and a big misunderstanding. >> maurice: the "cbs evening news" starts now.

♪ ♪ good evening, and thank you for being with us. i'm maurice dubois in for norah. we begin here tonight with the arrest and charges that have stunned the sports world and beyond. scottie scheffler, the pro golfer and current masters champion, was arrested early today after driving around the scene of a fatal accident. it happened as he was heading to the golf course for the second round of the pga championship. he was later charged with four counts, including felony assault, second-degree assault of an officer. according to the report, the police said scheffler refused to comply with directions and then accelerated, dragging an officer who had to be treated at the hospital for scrapes and swelling to his knee and wrist. scheffler, who made it back to the course for his delayed tee time, calls it all a big misunderstanding. cbs's mark strassmann is following today's whirlwind developments. >> guys. >> dude. >> stand back.

>> back up! >> i'm back. >> reporter: before dawn, scottie scheffler, pro golf's top player, drove into trouble, pulled by louisville cops from his car, arrested, and perp walked in handcuffs to a cruiser. >> right now he is going to jail. okay? he's going to jail. and there ain't nothing you can do about it. >> reporter: minutes earlier, drive around a traffic backup from a fatal aidvolving a pedestrian. a detective says he told him to stop. >> i didn't stop shaking for a while just because it was a chaotic situation, and yeah, my team, i leaned on them pretty heavily this morning to kind of get me to the right name of mind so i could go out and play. >> reporter: this criminal complaint details scheffler refused to comply and accelerated forward, dragging a detective to the ground and injuring him. scheffler was arrested near the entrance of the valhalla golf club. and less than four hours later, he teed off in today's second round of the pga championship. scheffler's attorney said the

golfer never at any point assaulted any officer with his vehicle. [cheers and applause] scheffler has dominated the pga this year. just last month, the 27-year-old won the masters, golf's most prestigious tournament, for the second time. >> if there's one person on the pga tour that i did not think would ever be in trouble with law enforcement, it would be scottie scheffler. he is known for being very stand-up, very straight arrow kind of guy. in trouble with the law.ould ge- >> reporter: scheffler's arraignment is scheduled for tuesday, but none of this has bothered his golf game. today, he shot a 66. maurice? >> maurice: okay, mark strassmann, thank you. a warning now, we are about to play disturbing video that appears to show sean "diddy" combs in 2016 pushing, kicking, and dragging his then-girlfriend cassandra ventura in a hotel hallway. cnn obtained the video, and we want to repeat here, it is hard to watch, but it seems to support some of ventura's allegations. here is cbs's elise preston. >> reporter: this l.a. hotel

surveillance video obtained by cnn seems to show media mogul sean "diddy" combs running down a hallway, chasing then-girlfriend singer cassie ventura. combs, wearing a bath towel, then grabs her by the back of the neck, throws her to the ground, and kicks her. he kicks her again, as she lies motionless on the floor, before dragging her back down the hallway. a different camera angle appears to show combs throwing a vase at ventura. the video seems to corroborate some of the allegations detailed in a now-settled lawsuit filed by ventura back in november, stating that around march 2016, combs became extremely intoxicated and punched her in the face, giving her a black eye, which prompted her to try to leave the hotel room. the lawsuit also accused combs of rape in 2018. in march, authorities raided combs' mansions in california and florida as part of a federal investigation being handled by a team that deals with human trafficking.

combs has faced at least five civil lawsuits since november, ranging from sexual misconduct to sex trafficking. in december, combs posted on instagram, "let me be absolutely clear: i did not do any of the awful things being alleged." we see this very graphic video. does this weaken his credibility? >> oh, absolutely. i think he will be trying to settle these civil cases as quickly as he can, frankly, for a very dollar amounts. >> reporter: we reached out to combs' team about the video. they are not commenting. meanwhile, ventura's attorney called it gut-wrenching, adding that she showed a lot of courage and fortitude coming forward. maurice? >> maurice: okay, elise preston, thank you. now to the deadly storms that have slammed texas, at least four people have been killed, hundreds of thousands without power. cbs's dave malkoff is in houston, where it could be weeks before the lights are back on. >> get away from the glass!

>> reporter: the storm came in fast and furious. tonight, building after building, block after block, windows blown out by 100 mile-per-hour winds. houston mayor john whitmire. >> it is one of those wow moments. >> reporter: because glass is everywhere? >> it's unbelievable. >> reporter: you can hear the crunch as i walk along the glass-covered streets of a major america downtown. you can see the extent of this damage along the eastern half of the building. all the glass coming down onto the street below, just pouring down as this wind ripped the building apart. >> we were told yesterday morning there was a chance of thunderstorms. >> reporter: with school canceled and no power or water at home, jacqueline muncy and her kids headed downtown. >> we did not know what else to do, so we went to barbecue. >> reporter: the violent storm tore down electrical towers, leaving piles of twisted steel, and millions without power. i was just with a family who doesn't have any water, they don't have any power. they found a place to eat, but

they are not sure what their next few days are going to look like. >> trying to prepare people for the worst and hoping for the best. >> reporter: the wicked winds flipped big rigs, uprooted trees, and collapsed a crane on a cement truck, killing the driver. and tonight, people here are bracing for what's next. >> we'd like to believe that it won't happen again, but with extreme weather we've been having over the last few years, who knows what will happen. >> reporter: hurricane season is just 15 days away. this wasn't a tornado. just straight-line winds that came through houston. but look at this club behind me. the mayor says that the winds came in through a front window, maurice, it increased the pressure inside, and that's what blew out the whole back of the club. no one was hurt. >> maurice: luckily, and our thoughts are with the people there. dave malkoff in houston tonight, thank you. and the severe weather is not over yet, with parts of alabama and mississippi bracing for more tonight. for details, let's bring in meteorologist mike bettes, from

our partners at the weather channel. good evening, mike. >> maurice, good evening. the storms that hit texas very hard are on the move. likely to produce more wind but also significant rain and upping the ante for some flooding. that will now include places like mississippi and alabama, even edging over into georgia. through tomorrow morning. there are the storms highlighted for you for the rest of the day today, and especially in this area that is highlighted in red, that is the area to keep an eye on. winds will be a significant factor with these storms, couldn't completely rule out an isolated tornado. looking ahead, early down the stream to next week, there is that front that comes in, low, sits over the midwest, strong storms for the midwest all the way down into texas, once again, so on monday, really highlighting the central plains and on tuesday a large area, maurice, to watch, that is going to include from topeka and fort smith, all the way past chicago and milwaukee. >> maurice: okay, we'll be watching. mike, thank you. to the middle east now, israel's military says its troops have recovered the bodies of three israeli hostages from the tunnels beneath gaza. one of them, 22-year-old shani louk.

the photo of her contorted body in the back of a pickup truck became a symbol of the brutality of the hamas attack on october 7th. cbs's imtiaz tyab has more. >> reporter: it was during the chaos and horror of hamas' october 7th attack on the nova music festival that all three hostages were killed. that same day, their remains were taken into gaza. >> they were celebrating life in the nova music festival, and they were murdered by hamas. >> the israeli military have identified them as shani louk, amit bouskila, and itzhak gelerenter. the bodies were recovered in a tunnel on thursday night in an operation by the israeli military, who did not specify where in gaza they were found. but over the past week, the fighting has intensified in the north, as israel's armed forces battle what they're calling a resurgent hamas. starting today,

desperately-needed aid is now being trucked into the besieged palestinian territory via this u.s. military-built pier. it works like this: already-screened aid is shipped from nearby cyprus, transferred to a floating platform, and then loaded onto trucks. the trucks are eventually moved onto smaller ships that sail to this pier, where the aid is then finally taken to shore. the dramatic intervention by the biden administration was triggered by israel's decision to sharply restrict supplies from reaching the people of gaza at the very start of this brutal war. now, no u.s. soldiers will set foot in gaza, and it's up to the u.n. to distribute the aid. the goal is to send up to 150 truckloads a day, but aid agencies say at least 500 are needed to even begin to tackle the massive humanitarian crisis unfolding across gaza. maurice? >> maurice: massive is right. imtiaz tyab in tel aviv tonight, thank you. today, the man who bludgeoned

nancy pelosi's husband with a hammer after breaking into their san francisco home got a 30-year prison sentence. you see david depape in this police body camera video attacking paul pelosi, who suffered a skull fracture and says he still has nerve damage in his hand. his wife was house speaker at the time of the attack in 2022. and depape admits he had planned to take her hostage, but she was not home. in a victim impact statement, she wrote, "the blood is impossible to ignore. our home remains a heartbreaking crime scene." there is mounting pressure tonight on supreme court justice samuel alito after a report that a symbol used by election deniers was on display at his home 11 days after the january 6th attack. cbs's scott macfarlane on how alito is responding. >> reporter: there are calls tonight for justice samuel alito to recuse himself from any cases involving the 2020 election after "the new york times" published this photo of an upside down american flag flying

outside alito's home in the days after the january 6th assault on the u.s. capitol. the flag, upside down, became a symbol of the "stop the steal" movement used by rioters and election deniers after the 2020 vote. >> this is a member of the supreme court, you know, people around the world are looking to them to be unbiased. >> reporter: in a statement, alito told "the new york times," "i had no involvement whatsoever in the flying of the flag. it was briefly placed by mrs. alito in response to a neighbor's use of objectionable and personally insulting language on yard signs." neighbors told the paper alito's wife was involved in a dispute with another family, who had put an anti-trump sign on their lawn. at the time, the high court was considering 2020 election challenges, and now is weighing critical cases involving donald trump, including whether the former president is immune from prosecution for efforts to subvert the election. alito, who has recently argued free speech is under attack... >> troubled waters are slamming against some of our most fundamental principles.

>> reporter: was scrutinized last year when a report showed he had gone on a luxury fishing trip to alaska, paid by two republican donors, one of whom had cases before the court. alito said they never discussed business. alito's fellow justice, clarence thomas, also faced scrutiny after who it was revealed his wife, ginni, sent text messages to former white house chief of staff mark meadows, challenging the 2020 election results. the supreme court code of conduct says justices should not be swayed by partisan interests and should remain dignified and respectful. maurice? >> maurice: scott macfarlane at the supreme court, thank you. now to norah o'donnell's historic interview with pope francis on this sunday's "60 minutes." it is the first time ever an american broadcast journalist has had such a long conversation with any pope. in it, francis addresses criticism he has faced for trying to make the church more

inclusive. >> norah: there are conservative bishops in the united states that oppose your new efforts to revisit teachings and traditions. how do you address their criticism? >> interpreter: you used an adjective, "conservative." that is, conservative is one who clings to something. and does not want to see beyond that. it is a suicidal attitude. because one thing is to take tradition into account, to consider situations from the past, but quite another is to be closed up inside a dogmatic box. a bishop must be a shepherd, and the shepherd must be in the middle of his herd. right in there with his flock. be it pretty, ugly, big, small, good or bad. that's where the pastor needs to be.

>> might grades took a dwindle. they went completely down hill. >> reporter: to the point where chris quit school, struggled to hold a job, and got in with the wrong crowd. he gave up on hope toledo. but not all hope was lost. because from that first day in the gym to now, pete kadens has stayed in chris' life. through all the missteps and blown opportunities, pete has been there, mentoring, lecturing, feeding, and fathering. >> what do we need to do to help you? >> reporter: and because of pete's ever-presence, today chris rowland is back on track.
