in the middle east has become a flashpoint on college campuses nationwide. students are calling on universities to divest from israel. and now we are learning sonoma state university president, mike lee was taken off of the job after an agreement you made for pro-palestinian protesters. what the officials say was insubordination. among other things, lee agreed to a boycott of academic and research institutions with ties to israel. the csu chancellor said lee made the announcement in a campuswide email without approval . the move is under review wildly remains on leave. in another email, lee issued an apology and wrote, my attempt to find agreement with one group of students, i marginalized other groups of the student population and community. i realize the harm that this is caused and i take full ownership of it. i deeply regret the unintended consequences of my actions. in the meantime, the california legislative jewish caucus said

they support the suspension saying, in a statement that his endorsement of an academic boycott was unacceptable and is evidence that he is unfit to lead the university. uc berkeley protesters have taken over a condemned building on campus. the university says they appear to be separate from pro-palestinian protesters that disbanded yesterday after camping out on campus for weeks. >> reporter: where one block away from people's park, which remains close as shipping containers and security guards keep anyone from getting inside. this morning, we can see a better look at what the setup is at this particular location as there are plenty of tents, signs, and flags surrounding this abandoned building. we understand that around 20 people set up on the lawn of this burned-out building on campus overnight. it is the alumni hall. the same amount could be inside as well. we have noticed people going through a door at this location. the university says that these appear to be

people's park protesters. it is the 55th anniversary of a major protest that happened at the park. all of this is coming as the encampment on uc berkeley's campus, related to the pro-palestinian protest came to an agreement with the university on tuesday. the school is saying that they would look into its investments to see if they align with the university's values. the chancellor is also saying that she would personally call for a cease-fire in gaza. this morning, we have been here at this particular location , monitoring the situation. we tried to speak to the folks that are out and about outside of the tents. they said they did not want to speak on camera and could not provide us with any statement. you could certainly notice that there are palestinian flags and messages of support for that cause , and those criticizing israel. where monitoring and acumen at the university of san francisco where graduation ceremonies happen this

afternoon. the deadline to disperse has come and gone. protesters say they are moving. administrators say they're not planning to remove protesters by force. did you warn that they could face academic repercussions. israel continues to widen a limited operation in the southern city of rafah. one dr. from the west has been unable to leave gaza. the doctor practices family medicine in palo alto. she left her family, including her two daughters in april for what was supposed to be a two week commission. now, the crossing to egypt is closed and a letter trapped. her brother has been fighting for her to return home. >> she wanted to be able to do more. just the advocacy from here was not enough. yesterday, when i was talking to her, we did text back and forth. one thing she was worried about was that she was not so worried

about herself, her spirits were good, but she was worried that they were running out of supplies and medical supplies due to the border crossing and they could not help the people. she was also worried that she would be late back to work , so she could not see her patients here. i found that ironic, we are worried about her safety. one big challenge with getting her out is safely moving around rafah. he says his sister has been treating a lot of children. >> there is a scarcity of food and dehydration. there is all of the sicknesses that come with being homeless. that is what she is seeing. they had to get relocated due to the intensity of what was going on in rafah. she has been very careful about what she shares with us here >> he says it has been hard to communicate with the sister due to frequent blackouts and that his family has contacted a

congresswoman for assistance in getting his sister back home. was moved to oakland. this is the first week for the city's new police chief, floyd mitchell. he previously served as the police chief of lubbock, texas. he replaces the former chief armstrong. joining me now is the oakland mayor. mitchell is just starting to take the reins. it has been a busy first week. absolutely, he has been here for a few weeks, even prior to his official start date to get acclimated and meet with people. you know , even prior to his being here, oakland is turning the corner. the public safety strategies that we have implemented are paying off. we are seen after years of rising crime rates, overall crime, overall crime in oakland is actually down. of course, we will not stop there. it is not good enough we will continue to keep pushing

progress to make sure our comprehensive approach to public safety, including the reviving of the cease-fire strategy, that it not only makes oakland a safer place to be in, but also for the constituents to feel safe. >> we spoke to some residents that say one of the main issues is public safety for them when it comes to business crime. what is the new chiefs strategy to address those issues? >> we have strategies that we have implemented. it works. the data shows that it works. we will continue to be data-driven to ensure that the strategies we are implementing and we continue to press on the gas on the strategies. with that being said, the chief is really excited to meet with rank-and-file and meet the many women of the police department. we are excited to get on the road. he wants to meet the community members. stay tuned for that. we will have a leadership, public safety team townhome roadshow in the city

of oakland. we are excited that. >> let's talk about the homeless crisis. we have new numbers showing the homeless population did grow by 9% over the last 2 years. can you talk about those numbers and what is being done to help the unhoused? >> yes, we have increased by 9%. this is progress , absolutely. i'm excited for the numbers. it shows that what we are doing is slowing down homelessness . the different housing solutions that we have, whether it is for permanent housing or for a temporary shelter, or permanent supportive housing, it is working. of course, there are still too many people on our streets. one is too many. the idea is that we will be focused on not just investing in new housing, but the preservation of affordable housing, right? that means everybody has to work together. i have been at

the white house, advocating a lot for the place -based voucher . when we build affordable housing, the affordable housing comes with a voucher. we know it is very difficult for residents to have vouchers to be accepted by landlords. all the different avenues we are taking will be key in how we get out of the crisis . i want to say thank you to oakland voters . even though we are in historical deficit, this will allow us to build deeply affordable housing here in the city of oakland. these projects are already shovel ready. >> reporter: mayor sheng thao, thank you for joining us. >> thank you, thank you for having me. streaming on cbs bay area news, second chance at life, a survivor of a hit-and-run honors those that lost their lives. >> every single person that died in san francisco on a bicycle deserves to be

cities across the bay area are celebrating bike to whatever day known as bike to work day. it encourages people that typically drive to get out and bike to where they need to go. in san jose, a snack station is set up on guadalupe river trail cyclist can stop

weekend, thanks to high-pressure offshore , keeping the storm tracks to the north. areas like canada are getting hit with rain. in the bay, we are only getting clouds. we have dry conditions through seven days. that is great news and a bay. will see dry conditions adieu next week's workouts as well. rain chances are showing nothing for the long-range models. we are dealing with drier than normal conditions. who's to complain when things like beta breakers is happening this weekend. is sunday alone we expect . 62 this afternoon . 64 across the bay bridge in oakland. we warm up into the 70s today, not the 80s like yesterday . we are close in the upper 70s. we have upper 70s and the santa clara valley. livermore is dropping off at 79 degrees. we have an onshore wind this afternoon. wind speeds will be up around 20 miles per hour . other than that it is a calm forecast for

a first kind program in san francisco training the next generation of makers is temporary closed due to a fire. its founders says he can lead the nonprofit through the pandemic if he can manufacture come back for those that depend on his innovative space. we have an update on the 2022 jefferson award winner. to so screening station was pretty damage. red ryan spurlock's nonprofit empowers hundreds of people with skills and tools that they need to launch or get a job in design and maker businesses. a recent fire cast a shadow over the program that he found it. >> it is tough for people. it is hard enough, given the cost of launching a business . we started under the stables here. >> reporter: the fire apparently started in a surge protector under the table. the sprinkler system could not put out the flames before the fire crews arrived. there is considerable smoke and water damage. about $50,000 in the

losses, including 3-d printers and computers. 80% of the computers are lost because they are on the floor. remake's goal is to restore the 15,000 square-foot maker space that we visited 2 years ago. a lot of people are counting on it. human made his home to san francisco's first training center for advanced manufacturing. at any given time, dozens of underserved adults take a training course to gain skills for jobs of the future. because of the fire, the valuable, hands-on training had to go virtual. >> it hasn't given me a sense of trepidation. remake the program graduates like jody, teaching students online while sharpening his own skills. he admits he gets discouraged. >> i figured out where i want to be in life. i reached another roadblock. when the water flooded in, all of the computers were affected. >> reporter: the fires a setback for entrepreneurs from diverse communities. they rely

on the discounted access to build the first tangible prototypes in robotics. those startups are scrambling for space. >> we have folks that do resort to using their home or their garage. we are doing our best to get things back up and running. >> reporter: in the process, ryan took a second look at his commitment to the maker community. >> it helped solidify why we do this, how it worked in the work is . there are very few of these spaces left in san francisco. >> reporter: he is crafting a comeback for his nonprofit, some days are tougher than others. >> reporter: ryan says he draws life and strength from his wife and family , not all of them are human made. the dog has been my saving grace of the last two weeks . that spaces covered by fire insurance. that takes time. ryan is trying to raise $50,000 in donations. he is hoping to reopen in a few weeks after the
