president in testimony to the alleged hush money scheme to silence stories that threatened his 2016 election. surprise visit. secretary of state antony blinken arrives in ukraine as a show of solidarity to ukraine as they fight off russia's attacks. and down with a boom and a splash. explosives help break up the last remaining mangled pieces of the collapsed francis scott key bridge. well, good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we are expecting another pivotal day in donald trump's criminal trial in new york. trump's former personal lawyer and fixer michael cohen will face a bruising cross-examination in the so-called hush money trial. yesterday cohen told the jury the former president personally approved the payments to adult film star stormy daniels to silence her ahead of the 2016 election. cbs's jarred hill is joining me here with the details.

this was the star witness. >> this is the key witness in the prosecution's case. a lot was learned about during this one yesterday. michael cohen testified for hours, giving intimate accounts of the payments at the center of the prosecution's case against former president donald trump. cohen told the jury how much trump wanted to silence stormy daniels' story, worried with how it would play with women voters. the question, was it illegal. michael cohen, the man who once said he would take a bullet for former president donald trump, returns to the witness stand today to testify against him. monday the prosecution's star witness told the jury trump was directly involved in a scheme to pay adult film star stormy daniels to keep quiet about an alleged past sexual encounter. trump was furious she was shopping the story before the 2016 election. trump told him, just take care of it. cohen added, trump told him it

was a total disaster. women are going to hate me. >> this is the first time we're really getting a picture of what donald trump's personal role was in these payments issue. >> reporter: prosecutors showed this document with cohen's name and with $130,000 scribbled at the bottom. as cohen described the trump tower meeting planning to pay in installments designed to look like legal payments. there was a secret recording. >> this trial is rigged. >> reporter: trump denies the sexual encounters and has pleaded not guilty to charges that he falsified business records that he disguised business records to cohen listed as legal fees. he previously served time on the charges related to the legal payments. trump and his legal team have reiterated that this was all just politics. in their cross the defense is expected to attack cohen's credibility and paint him as an

unreliable witness, convicted perjurer, and a vendetta against the former president. we'll see how that plays out. >> a good likelihood of fireworks for sure, jarred, thank you. secretary of state anthony blinken is in kyiv this morning on a previously unannounced diplomatic mission. blinken is in ukraine to reassure vladimir zelenskiy that his country has u.s. support as it defends the stepped up attacks. this comes after a long delayed $60 billion aid package for ukraine. and now to the middle east where israeli forces are fighting a growing resurgence from hamas in the northern gaza strip. this as u.s. officials say recent troop movement indicates israel could expand operations in rafah soon, an operation president biden has been warning israel against. meanwhile we're learning more than 1,000 hamas militants are currently being treated in turkish hospitals. that's according to that country's president. and the u.n. is coming under scrutiny for lowering the death

count to palestinian women and children. on may 6th the agency reported 9,500 women and 14,500 children killed. two days later it reduced the numbers to about half that. the u.n. says the new figures show the people who have been identified. israel has long criticized the u.n. for relying on hamas' health ministry for the numbers. cbs's ramy inocencio reports from tel aviv. >> reporter: israeli strikes eck can co-ed across northern gaza like in the first weeks of this war. more wounded and more dead with thousands running out of refugee camps as israel's military rolled in, it says, to stop hamas from regrouping. a tank is behind the school, yelled this mother. we don't know where to go. on gaza's southern end, parts of rafah city sits shattered and abandoned as israel advances

compounded by the current heightened environment in the u.s. and federal investigators are expected to release their preliminary findings on the francis scott key bridge collapse in baltimore. yesterday they set off explosions in the last remaining part of the steel wreckage to help release the cargo ship that's been trapped there for nearly seven weeks. here's cbs's nicole sganga. >> reporter: explosive precision cuts at the site of the key bridge collapse, workers demolishing steel beams to remove a colossal steel truss atop the cargo ship dali and 21 crew members below deck. >> it's going to allow the pressure from the cuts to literally separate the mettle and cut through the steel. >> reporter: once clear, crews will hope to refloat the dali in the hopes of moving the ship out of the channel in just two day.

almost $2 billion. nicole sganga, cbs news, dundalk, maryland. tornado and flood watches are in effect along florida's gulf coast this morning as powerful storms make their way through the south. strong winds, torrential rain, and possible tornadoes caused extensive damage in southern louisiana last night, and at least one person was killed in the baton rouge area. at one point more than 100,000 people in the state lost power. >> it's coming right for us. >> hundreds of miles to the north in missouri a tornado touched down on a golf course in branson. there were no reports of injuries to the area or damage to the golf course. and today the severe storms move into florida, including tampa, orlando, and jacksonville. isolated tornadoes and damaging winds will be possible. coming up, frightening moments in a louisiana church after an armed teenager interrupts communion. how he was stopped.

15-year-old ella adler fell into the water saturday and was hit by another boat which sped away. investigators say it's unclear if the driver of the boat knew they hit someone. hundreds of people attended funeral services for the girl yesterday in miami beach. a $20,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest. and the advocate says a teenager armed with a gun was arrested after attempting to enter a louisiana church during a service packed with dozens of children. authorities say the 16-year-old boy carrying a rifle tried to enter the church in abbeville saturday during a first communion ceremony. a live stream shows the priest trying to calm everyone by asking them to recite a prayer. he and another man ducked behind the altar. parishioners quickly subdued the teenager. and the "associated press" says vice president kamala harris uttered profanity while talking with asian and islanders.

center. one needed surgery after becoming entangled in a fishing line, and the other had a fishing hook embedded in its shoulder. the country's largest employer slashing jobs and the white house is taking aim at chinese electric vehicles and other clean energy goods. here's shanelle kaul with today's "moneywatch." stocks closed mixed monday as investors await inflation data coming later this week. the dow lost 81 points, nasdaq gained 47 points, and the s&p 500 was down 1 point. president biden is expected to announce major new tariffs today on chinese electric vehicles. the tariffs will also target semiconductors, batteries, solar equipment, and medical supplies. it's the latest attempt from the biden administration to keep china from threatening american manufacturing. china is a global leader in electric vehicles, but very few of them are currently available in the u.s.
