♪ from cbs news bay area, this is the morning edition. >> here is a live look at san francisco this morning. we are kicking off the weekend with an unusually wet start to the month of may. we will get you up to speed what you can expect as you the weekend. plus, interstate 80 is back open this morning in fairfield after a police standoff shut is it down for hours. the chain of events that caused a traffic tie-up in potato directions well into friday night. a san jose police officer in critical condition after responding to a domestic violence call at a motel. this morning, what he with learned of the moment leading up to the shootout. good morning and thank you for starting your day with us. today is saturday, may 4. i am max darrow.

we are kicking off our first weekend of may with an unusually rainy day. let's get right over to first alert chief meteorologist paul hagan with what to expect as you head out the door. >>paul: we are starting the weekend with a very winner-like storm system sending rain, gusty winds and colder temperatures across the bay area. this is kind of a one-day event. still will have the cool air sticking around for the rest of the weekend and outdoor activities pushing back until tomorrow. we will be seeing things dry out across bay area, hour-by-hour rain chances. at the peak tapering off quickly as we head into the afternoon. outside chance of a straggling shower into this evening. temperatures are going to be just flat-out cold for early may. these high temperatures anywhere from five to ten degrees below average. and ten to 20 degrees farther inland. numbers reminiscent of new year's day instead of cinco de mayo weekend. extended forecast in just a few

minutes. this morning, interstate 80 is back nope fairfield and traffic is moving normally once again. quite a back-up last night fooling three-hour shutdown in both directions. all due to a freeway shooting suspect that spanned across multiple counties. chp say the suspect in a toyota sedan was initially involved in a shooting 11:00 in the morning. highway 101 north of santa rosa. the spot operation played out in front of our cameras. chp said the suspect shot himself and now in critical condition this morning in the hospital. we are shown what happened during that standoff. >>reporter: instead of waiting hours on the road for the traffic to involve roar colleen knapp decided to wait it out on the side county road. >> unbelievable. not your typical friday night. >>reporter: wild chase through four counties. highway california patrol officers trying to slow the

toyota corolla with spike strips but the driver navigated around him. a woman in santa rosa said someone shot into her car. gave officers the description of the car and spotted in roner park and when the pursuit began. came to answered near cordelia where the swat team cornered the suspect and the standoff began. in a joint effort why the fairfield police department, officers smashed the back win development car to get a better look inside. police deployed several flash bangs with no affect. chp telling us that the man had a gas mask with him in the car. officers eventually discovered that the driver had shot himself. police used cpr right away and the suspect was taken away in an ambulance. while all of this was going on in a span of several hours, drivers parked on 80 were left wonder what was going on. >> people were rolling their windows down and they were saying, ma'am, ma'am, do you know what is going on?

i said, i don't know. maybe cal trans is working on the road. i kept acting siri. she didn't have any answers for me. so -- [ laughter ] -- >>reporter: officers in santa rosa say the womb in santa rosa was not hurt and they do not believe that the suspect and victim knew each other. investigators are looking what led up to you that shooting in the first place. >> and again, we know that the suspect survived a self-inflicted gunshot wound. so their that person has not been publicly identified. a department say two officers were shot putting their lives on the line helping a mom and her three kids. this morning, one of the three officers are out of the hospital and the other one in critical condition and is told is expected to survive. they were wounded last thursday night during a gun battle at a motel. as our dal lynn reports, the suspect tried to escape by jumping out of a third-floor

win window. >> reporter: san jose police surrounded extended stay america on st. ignacio avenue after a gun battle erupted. 33-year-old suspect wonderful kevin brions shot two officers. one returned fire. hotel guest heard some of the gunshots from his room. >> it sounded like a pow, pow thing. >>reporter: four times? >> about four times, yeah. >>reporter: silas said responding officers told him to shelter in place. >> stay in your rooms. be safe. don't open your doors. stay in. >>reporter: officers responded to a domestic violence call around 150:30 on the third floor. >> a mother and children were sheltering on the sore side of a thin hotel door from a known man be who admittedly committed violence on them. >>reporter: acting police chief paul joseph say that mother already has a restraining order against the suspect. unclear if the mother or children were living in the hotel to stay away from the

suspect or how he found them. the department released a couple of photos taken from the officers' chest cams. briones walked away from the hotel room when he saw the two responding officers. when the officers tried to talk to him, he reached into a duffel bag, pulled out a gun and shot the officers. >>the suspect fled running a way i from the officers shooting multiple rounds at him. one officer returned fire and struck the suspect. >>reporter: the suspect jumped out of a third-floor hallway window. back-up officers arrested him nearby. briones sustained life-threatening injuries. he is stabilized in critical condition. >> officers contacted the mother and children hide in the hotel room. it became apparent their lives were likely saved by the responding officers. in the room was the survivor of a recent domestic violence attack. the suspect had an arrest warrant for that domestic violence incident. also hide in the hotel room were three children, ages 8, 10 and

15. >>reporter: the acting chief say they recovered a stolen handgun used by the suspect. he has an extensive criminal history. say also a staying at the hotel to receive routine cancer treatment at a nearby hospital, he is glad the family is safe. >> shootings and -- it has becoming prevalent. >> police say the officer who was released from the hospital has been with the department for three and a half years. the officer still in the hospital has been with the force for about a year. in san francisco, police busted an illegal gambling operation in the hrt of the tenderloin. they seized more than a dozen gaming machines. the bust happened at the 700 block of he will advice street near the city staff college civicenter campus. police reported finding drugs and paraphernalia. made multiple arrests and a 45-year-old man they believe was

running the operation. provided a picture of what they say was a loaded gun they confiscated during their search. a mcdonald's franchise owner confirmed they have to call pest control at one of their oakland restaurants. california fast food workers union claim that workers walked out on strike because of of a rat infestation at the airport. >> who has the. >>the fast food union posted this video of workers picketing. the union reported the infestation to cal osha who reached out to the union and did not hear back. we reached out to the mcdonald's corporate office and they gave thus statement from the location owner and operator. it is important for them for the employee have a safe place to work. and when they realized the issue contacted pest control and will continue to work with them. way-mo will test driverless cars on streets on the

peninsula. it is the google-owned company say the first step to expand service to unnyvale. will only give rides to waymo employees from san francisco to burlingame. freeways are also off limits for now and have been pushed back to driverless cars after a string of accident involving cru cruise, rival company to way mo. a bill from state senator dave corsazy land give permits and locations for driverless vehicles. the recent layoffs at tesla forced some former employees to make tough financial decisions to make ends meets. one former employee was with the company for five years and bought a new home two years ago. he said he loved working at tesla and would even sleep in his car to save time to his commute to fremont. all that changed last month when he tried to use his badge at the

least 300 tornadoes in the month of april. on average, there are 182 tornadoes reported during the month. but just last week, more than 100 were reported across the country. most violent to date was an ef 4 that hit oklahoma at the end of april. the upcoming months of may and june, the national weather service is expected to see even higher totals. the first weekend of may is off to a wet and, well, cold start. temperatures really aren't going to change that much at all where where they are rights now. the rain will be heavy at times this morning and also breezy throughout the day and temperatures will be closer to our normals for early to mid-january instead of early may. we dry out tomorrow and still cool. a warming trend. and will head to the first full week of may. and above average temperatures by wednesday. future cast show the rain remaining widespread through the rest of this morning and pockets of heavier rain and they don't

linger too long and limit the flooding potential approximately lingering showers from the afternoon and evening hours. total rainfall amounts half inch to an inch across the bay area. evenly distributed. less that some of the rain spots, more in higher elevations but an even spread of rain that represents pretty much what is normal for the entire month of may across the bay area. in the sierra, a storm maker, winter storm warning in effect for the cinco de mayo weekend. this is unusual. i-80 tricky, five to eight inches. closer to the five-inch near the lake in tahoe. blustery conditions as well. talk about temperatures across the bay area today and they are going to be raw. only around 650 degrees for the warmest location in san jose. i added our departure from normal under the city name. 15 degrees below normal in the santa clara. 15 to 20 below average inland in the east bay with highs in the

upper 50s. traditionally this time of year normally temperatures cooler along the bay. about five to ten degrees above average and the coast. temperatures in the north bay, even though it will stop there first, will not warm up to any great extent. high temperatures in the mid to upper 50s. breeze will be kicking up through the rest of the day. these respects hour by hour wind gusts over the next 24 hours. you can see the gutsiest conditions will take hold after the rain starts behind the cold front and the rain should diminish tonight into early sunday morning. take a look at the seven-day forecast. one of these things are not like the other. one is today. back up to normal levels by tuesday. above average by wednesday, thursday and friday. inland spots in the mid to upper 80s by thursday and friday and the warming trend will be noticeable. temperatures in the mid-70s. by thursday and friday not that bad for early to mid-may. temperatures around the coast

warm up to nearly that level and warm up. temperatures in the mid-60s along the coast as we hit the end of next beak. keep that in mind as we are making our way through, kind of a raw first weekend in may. hundreds divers in florida, about 600 in total, are removing underwater and coastal debris from the florida keys. it is part of an event called the "i care trash derby." trash derby festival is an event at found inners park at at isla norada. the organization behind it, i care, works with recreational divers to restore coral reefs in the sea with the goal of cleaning up the sea. 13,000 bounds of trash collected by volunteers. they hope to double that number this year. keeping our oceans a and coral reef clean, as they spawn, their larva has a place

sent through new year's day. cinco de mayo weekend. a warm-up in the extended weekend forecast. we will look at that in just a few minutes. little more than two weeks since protests against gaza have happened on college campuses across the united states. since then, 2,000 people were arrested. commencement ceremonies are under way, trying to limit disruption by heightening security and limiting access to campuses and graduation events. bradley blackburn has the latest from new york. >>reporter: protesters and counterprotesters filled the street near new york university hours after police cleared another campus encampment and made multiple arrests. a scene playing out at campuses across the country opinion on friday, ucla's location was cleared, tents on the lawn along with graffitis scalded on buildings. portland state university after police moved against protesters thursday, video friday show what was left behind in the library

with barricades, tents and supplies and graffiti covering the walls. this week, president biden spoke out against violent protest. >> vandalism, trespassing, breaking windows, shutting down campuses, forcing the cancellation of classes and graduation. none of this is a peaceful protest. >>reporter: others argue by inviting police on to campuses. university administrators have been heavy handed. >> any suggests that this level of response is appropriate is repulsive. >>reporter: columbia university where police cleared an occupied campus building this week, student journalists are pushing back on claims that protests are from outside agitators not students. >> whether are you disagree with the way they are protesting they work. and work incredibly hard to keep their voices heard. >>reporter: security has tightens to discourage disruption. after cancelling ceremonies, u

is,c will have a celebration may 9 at the l.a. coliseum. students will receive a limited number of tickets. in washington d.c., a three-year-old girl was shot and killed as bless were responding to a shooting call. police say that child was struck beginfire riding in a car. investigators believe she was not an intended target of the shooting. no word how many people were involved in this incident and why this shooting happened. the incident remains under investigation. and a little over six months since a gunman killed 18 people in the deadliest mass shooting in a bowling alley and pool hall. the lewiston bowling alley reopened the door for the first time. a tough choice for the owners who wanted to do it for their community. customers were met with a whole new look for the bowling alley, but in a way, it is like things never changed. >> it was a lot, but, you know, it is home and where we are comfortable. it's a place of happiness and we

of former attorney michael cohen making payments to orn actress stormy daniels and cohen did it out of the kindness of his own heart. hicks said that would have been out of character for cohen. police in british columbia and canada have arrested three suspects in the murder of a sikh separatist. mask gunmen killed him in june. the killing caused a diplomatic crisis between canada and india after the canadian prime minister announced that intelligence service was investigating information of a potential link between india's government and the killing. so far canada has declined. and a plan to evacuate palestinians ahead of a potential operation in rafah, gaza. prime minister netanyahu vows he will carry on the mission despite the warnings from president biden and other western officials.

>> we await to see whether, in effect, they can take yes for an answer on the cease-fire and release hostages. and the reality in this moment is, the only thing standing between the people of gaza and the cease-fire is hamas. >> in response, the biden administration stated that there could be consequences for israel if they choose to move forward with the operation. 1.5 million palestinians have taken shelter in southern gaza as the war begins. hundreds of thousands people will be at imminent risk of death if the operation pulls through. the operation plan is not finalized before both sides continue to discuss the matter. texas democratic congressman and his wife surrendered to federal authorities on charges of bribery and conspiracy. couple is accused of taking $600,000 be from a energy company and bank tied to run frommy entities.

normals for early to mid-january instead of early may. dry out tomorrow and still cool a warming trend to the first full week of may. above average temperatures by wednesday. futurecast show the rain remaining widespread. and moving through quickly. pockets of heavier rain and don't ling tier long in any one spot. few lingers showers as we head into the afternoon and evening hours. total rainfall amounts out of this are going to add up to half an inch to an inch across the entire bay area. evenly distributed. and little more in some of the higher elevations but an even spreaded rain. and that represents pretty much what is normal for the entire month of may across the bay area. in the sierra, a snow maker. winter storm warning is in effect in cinco de mayo weekend. unusual. i- i-80 five to eight inches. closer to 12 plus inches on higher peaks and blustery

conditions as well talk about the temperatures across the bay area today. they are going to be raw. only around 60 best. and will be 10 to 15 degrees above normal in the santa clara valley. 15 to 20 degrees and highs in the mid to upper 50s. traditionally this time of year normally, conditions cooler around the bay. temperatures in the north bay, even though the rain will stop there first, not going to warm up to any greater extent. high temperatures in the mid to upper 50s. and the breeze is going to be kicking up as we head through the rest of the day. these are the hour-by-hour wind wind gusts over the next 24 hours. the gutsiest conditions will hold after the rain stops behind the cold front and driving the rain and the rain shall diminish. take a look at the seven-day forecast. one of these things is not like the other. the one thing is, well, today. draw things out and warm things

up. back up to normal levels by tuesday. above average by wednesday, thursday and friday and inland spots mid to upper 80s by thursday and friday and the warming trend will be noticeable but not quite that extreme around the bay. temperatures in the mid-70s. thursday and friday, not bad for early to mid-may. temperatures along the coast won't aquarium up to nearly that level. we hit the end of next week. kind of a raw officials weekend in may. san francisco has only one of three japan towns that still remain in the united states. the native san franciscan somebody leading the efforts to keep it alive. our sharon chen introduces us to this week's bay area jefferson award winner. >> one of only -- >>reporter: growing up, grace came to japan town to learn japanese, became a youth leader and hang out with friends.

in the pandemic. >> hi, linda. >>reporter: linda owns the paper tree, an origami store her parents started 57 years ago. >> how is business? >> good. business is great. >>reporter: grace crafted a strategy that kept many stores from folding. >> the only reason why gentleman pab town survived the pandemic. >> reporter: checked in with small business owners often to make sure they had updates from the city, ppe, covid tests and access to vaccines. one of 80 stores with grants from a half million fund raised by the japan town community district. with grace at the helm, the district set up outdoor dining and produced j-town through social media, technology that many store did not use. >> without her store and continued -- making sure she took care of the community, none of us will be open.
