and right now in the afternoon edition. an update on a gun back. in the south. bay. that left 2 police off injured. good afternoon. i'm ryan yamamoto that happened in san jose and nishio san ignatieff and santa teresa neighborhood places. police say the officers were responding to a disturbance last night when the male suspect opened fire. they fired

back, injuring the suspect, and they were taken to the hospital. invest. the investigation stretch into the morning. the suspect and 1 officer and in critical condition. the other officer, has been released. they're expecting an update from police about an hour from now, ok, 1st alert weather right now. get outside while you can on this friday. we're still in our may warm spell, but 0, not for long. here's meteorologist jessica burch. >we have 1 more day of mild weather in the forecast for us, but once we head into our weekend setup, while we have a cold front moving in, it's going to take these 70s near livermore and fremont. and dropped them down into the 50s. kind of like what we have today near half moon bay, but then happening bay is also still going to stay in the 50s to it's going to be a chilly setup for us tomorrow, so enjoy this warm weather while we have it if you live near concord, we're sitting at 78 degrees today, 66. at san francisco and all the way up into the north bay mid 70s in areas near napa, but watch what happens as we get ready for this cold front right around the corner, a mix of sun and clouds is in the forecast for us today. not that bad, but

it's kind of a tease ahead because once we wake up tomorrow morning, starting up in the north bay just around 6 a.m. that cold front starts making its way in with light to moderate rain with heavy pockets at times, just in the center of that system. this is stopped just around 1030 tomorrow. notice how heavy some of these storms are stretching from redwood city all the way up into sacramento for that matter, the same storm system will actually impact the sierra, bringing them snow and advancing the clock into the 4:00 hour. notice how suddenly we're talking about a mix of sun and clouds once again in a little pockets of showers in the forecast for us heading into the evening hours tomorrow night on the bright side, we dry up even more as we head into our sunday for >ryan>rates up most today. right now in san francisco mayor london breed is announcing her proposal for a new downtown entertainment. zone. it would allow restaurants and bars to sell alcoholic beverages during outdoor. events, which was is also discussing a new grant program for economic revitalization. projects and this announcement comes after san francisco is the 1st ever

1st thursday's event last night. several blocks of 2nd street south of market where shut down to traffic instead of cars. the streets were full of food vendors art and music event organizers were actually inspired by oakland's 1st fridays and it's a welcome sight for city business owners. >1st heard about it. i was like, ok, this would be good. i'm definitely down with it and um it's it works both ways. so we can actually get our name out there for our business and then also, we're helping the city of san francisco as far as getting people out in the streets. >ryan>last night's block party was the 1st of 12. the event is scheduled to continue every month through april of 2025. the san jose now we're 5 new pop up shops are part of a program to increase the safety and the vibrant of downtown. they just held the ribbon cutting in the last couple of hours. these businesses are all women owned and the concept of the program is to fill empty or underutilized spaces with local entrepreneurs we're trying to

expand. >designed this program. specifically with the goal of creating a sustainable small business power model for retail. activation. >ryan>our sean chitnis talked to 1 of the business owners eager to welcome new customers and help the area thrive. >reporter>theresa chapela believes there is something in the beauty of crystals that will appeal to just about anyone. there's a of her business bad witch crystals suggests she's onto something. >like it's been a long time coming. and worked really hard for the last 4 almost 5 years. from my mom's kitchen counter from my parents' garage. and i'm just so happy that finally have the storefront with everything. >reporter>is 1 of the newest businesses opening up on friday in a section of downtown san jose that could use a little color and some positive vibes. her store along with 2 others are part of a project from san jose based moment. which specializes in pop up retail

opportunities. >there is nothing like the energy that comes from a small business and a small business maker, especially the ones that we work with in the local bay area. we've never seen this type of excitement and enthusiasm towards running their own business >reporter>moment, partnered with the san jose downtown. association, to fill these retail spaces near san jose state university. funded by the city. >i felt like it was a perfect opportunity. it's a way for a small businesses, to test that our ideas and see if retail will work >reporter>for. theresa says she knew san jose was the right place to open her 1st store because of the community support for small businesses. despite all the challenges retail shops face around the bay area. theresa is excited to start this new chapter. >i think it's just human nature to be intrigued to something that is shiny and pretty. i don't think it necessarily even matters if you believe in the spiritual or metaphysical >reporter>charged to give off good energy to the neighborhood. and the economy.

>ryan>and theresa's story. along with other stores are celebrating the grand opening today along passot day. san antonio in downtown san jose. as national small business week comes to an end, we wanted to check back in with another entrepreneur. in oakland. chef and owner, amani greer. started roasted and raw 4 years ago earlier in the pandemic. is plant based bull shop in downtown oakland started as a pop up. he has his own location now, which he has run since 2022. the challenges continue with 2 recent break ins, but chef amani says the community in oakland stepped up with a nonprofit paying for some of the damages. people also increase their support by giving them more business and leaving larger tips. >biggest thing to do with small businesses as network yourself, you know, connections. really? getting to know people and we've been blessed with some amazing networks. >ryan>networks include his own insurance company, posting about his business on social media, he says. that kind of word of mouth is crucial for small businesses to survive in this economy. well, the latest

jobs report is out today shows that nationwide unemployment rate increased slightly to it 9%. 107. jobs were added. that's below what economists at had expected. >slow down in the labor market may seem like bad news, but it's actually good because people won't spend as much and they won't keep prices high. >ryan>a wave of layoff has hit the tech industry from google the peloton to tesla. the automaker announced in april, it was cutting more than 10% of its global workforce. faced with slumping electric vehicle sales, but there were also gains to report in sectors like health care. and economists say key trade skills are still in high demand. >when we look at this top 10 list of jobs we see that these are really the core jobs of the american economy. nursing electricians, mechanics. these are jobs that are so common you can find them and pretty much every city. >ryan>the online hiring platform indeed has healthcare

is no stranger to cultural events. >team has been doing filipino festivals for the past 7 years. but it really had this desire to build more. multicultural. events and bring communities of color together. to build something bigger than any 1 of us. >reporter>working from the ground up. she and her team are designing every detail. from the signage to the food and wine curation. the main gathering will take place on saturday in berkeley. with additional pop ups throughout san francisco. gina hopes in a time of polarizing division her gathering will be a source of healing. >i think now more than ever, it's important for us to come together to get to know each other to build bridges, especially across cultures because so many of us are experiencing similar things in this country. >reporter>and serving as a of connection is at the heart of her work. born and raised in the bay. says her hometown is the perfect space for the festival. >i love the bay area so much because of its diversity like we really are so lucky that

there so so many different cultures and people in community. community that we're exposed to. you can get so much amazing food here. that really is a taste of home. >reporter>and that taste will be present at the festival working with vendors like rizza bakery. gina hopes attendees will learn more about local culinary creators. >bakery and in soma there 1 of our featured chefs that's going to be doing a tasting a really delicious bread tasting paired with cheeses at the festival. of course, tons of wine galore. >reporter>gina runs her last few errands. in preparation for the fest. she says the experience is tailored for families of all backgrounds. >multigenerational so bring your mom bring your anti and also if you don't even identify as a person of color, you are absolutely welcome. it's just that we're really creating space to lift up folks who don't normally get to be in the spotlight, >reporter>putting a light on culture. 4. the culture. >ryan>there are 3 events in berkeley tomorrow, including the main dissed signature event

luckily it's a 1 day event for us because once we head into our sunday forecast, we dry up fast with a gradual warming trend into next week, because i'm not sure if i told you yet, but we are also going to be dealing with some chilly temperatures around the corner. we'll get to that in just a 2nd. better yet. let's time out the storm because today we're just seeing that mix of sun and clouds in the forecast for us, especially along our coastline into the overnight hours. around 6 a.m. that 1st band of rain pushes through santa rosa stretching down into san francisco by 10 a.m.. am now it becomes a widespread throughout the bay area stretching down into the santa clara valley with heavy pockets of rain at that, all the way up into the north bay still with light, ma moderate showers. you see that in that green and yellow color. now that continues to sweep to the south into the afternoon hours. notice how on the back end we're seeing light. scattered showers at times, but a lot lighter compared to that early morning and afternoon setup now into the overnight hours, that area of low pressure usher sweeps off to the sierra where they are under a winter weather advisory. we're going to continue to keep a close eye on that as we head into this weekend. luckily, we dry up once we head into our sunday forecast, so how much

rain are we expected to get close to an inch in areas like pacifica over an inch expected all the way over into pleasant and pretty impressive numbers up in the north bay, too. now, taking a look at our friends up in the sierra. they could see anywhere from 4 to 8 inches of snow but there was gusty conditions. definitely make it difficult to travel. so let's take a look at the bay area 1 more time for us today because today it's beautiful. another day of 60s in san francisco 70s across the bay bridge into oakland 70s up in the wine country with 60s near redwood city. yesterday. we were talking about 80s near antioch. now we're in the upper 70s. so just a little bit cooler, but no matter where you live in the bay area. you're going to notice a lot cooler conditions once we head into our forecast tomorrow, because keep in mind, this is a cold front. these 70s, almost 80s that we have today are quickly going to turn into 50s. as we head into our saturday forecast a bundle up. stay warm. maybe sleep in and you're probably going to miss most the rain event anyways, once we head into sunday monday, we'll see a mix of sun and clouds and then here we go into next week. look at this huge warm up right around the corner. we have upper 80s

well, they've been called spooky and sin. but bats that's actually play. a critical role in maine. a healthy ecosystem in california, however, our warming planet is threatening their population. and in today's project, earth and mackovic shows us how researchers are tracking where bats take flight to better understand how to help. them thrive. >reporter>they sleep during the day hunt at night and well, often terrify people. but there's nothing creepy about what bats do for the environment. >not only cute but they do these amazing roles for ecosystem.

>reporter>qwerty 30 is a bat biologist at u. c l. a, he says without bats, life would be far less enjoyable. >we wouldn't have coffee. we wouldn't have chocolate. we wouldn't have tequila without bats like that should >reporter>be enough for 300 species of fruit depend on bats for pollination. they helped disperse seeds play an essential role in pest control by eating mosquitoes. wasps and flies. also reduced the risk of wildfires by gobbling up tree destroying bark beetles. but for all the good they do, there is trouble ahead bats are declining. around the world due to loss of habitat. pollution. and extreme weather events caused by climate change. >is going to be honest with you. it's very daunting, knowing that there are all these multitudes of factors that are leading to their declines. and general apathy. >reporter>sousa is far from apathetic. >it's been very exciting. >reporter>sousa is a senior environmental scientist with the california department of fish and wildlife. his team is tracking bats by attaching

small small radio transmitters on >them. this type of technologies is really useful in helping us answer questions about how animals might be impacted by climate change and the effects of climate change. >reporter>barrow is a transmitter on a horse. he bats the most common bat in california. the technology shows where the bat is traveling and how they're behaving chaotic weather patterns can change when bats migrate, and that can impact their habitats. and food >the way animals move is very much dependent on how the climate is is behaving. >reporter>25 known bat species in california they provide billions of dollars worth of pest control for state farmers. the hope is to learn more about how to preserve these creatures. as the planet continues to warm. >ryan>and here's california's official bet. official state bet the palate bad it's a very social 1 found in deserts, woodlands and force and for more information on california bats and how you can protect them by building a bad house.
