of dollars to the survivors of disgraced dr. larry nassar. first, the capitol divide. the senate impeachment trial of a u.s. cabinet secretary ends before it starts, while the embattled house speaker is pushing ahead with a foreign aid bill that could cost him the gavel. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. two showdowns playing out on capitol hill. senate democrats voted down articles of impeachment against homeland security secretary alejandro mayorkas, calling it a political stunt. while over in the house, speaker mike johnson is setting up a vote on funding bills for ukraine and israel over objections from members of his own party. cbs' jarred hill is joining us now from new york. this is a complicated one. morning. >> reporter: yeah, there's a lot going on. you got one job that is potentially on the line while another is in intact. house republicans impeached biden's homeland security secretary over his handling of the border, but the senate dismissed those charges without

a trial. house republicans' weeks-long effort to oust the secretary of homeland security over in about three hours in the senate. >> the article falls. >> reporter: the democratic majority rejected two articles of impeachment charging alejandro mayorkas with failing to enforce immigration law and breach of public trust. >> this whole impeachment was nothing more than a political show. >> reporter: senate majority leader chuck schumer argued the impeachment of mayorkas over policy disagreements sets a dangerous precedent. senate republicans pushed back saying dismissing the charges without a full trial set a dangerous precedent of its own. >> never before in the history of our republic has the senate dismissed or tabled articles of impeachment when the impeached individual was alive and had not resigned. >> reporter: house speaker mike johnson said he was disappointed in the senate's action. >> i think it's a violation of their constitutional responsibility. >> reporter: johnson's future could sit on shaky ground as he shifts focus to separate bills that would give billions of

dollars to israel and ukraine. president biden voiced support for the ukraine bill. >> the congress has to pass to continue funding, they have to do it now, now. akron which will likely need votes from democrats to pass. some house conservatives have threatened to trigger a vote to oust johnson over his willingness to reach across the aisle. johnson said that he is giving lawmakers 72 hours to review the legislation, meaning that we could see a vote on this as soon as saturday before both chambers are scheduled to be on recess next week. >> all right. jarred hill in new york. thank you so much. the new storm system is moving into the central u.s. bringing a risk of severe storms for the fourth day in a row. yesterday powerful storms again battered the midwest. a tornado about 60 miles north of columbus, ohio, damaged homes and businesses and sent a tree smashing into a car. there were no reports of injuries, though. today there's a threat of severe storms in parts of eight states from texas to indiana, putting

more than 25 million americans at risk. the strongest chance of damaging winds and isolated tornadoes will be near st. louis in the afternoon and evening. and jury selection in donald trump's new york criminal hush-money trial resumes today. so far seven jurors have been picked, 11 more are still needed. the judge is aiming for opening statements on monday. yesterday on truth social, trump ripped the jury selection process. he wrote that he should get unlimited strikes of potential jurors because he's in one of the worst venues in the country. he went on to acknowledge that he only gets ten. the department of justice has agreed to pay approximately $100 million to settle claims with about 100 people who say they were sexually assaulted by sports doctor larry nassar. that's according to the "wall street journal." it comes after a 2021 government report said fbi agents ignored and mishandled abuse allegations from women for more than a year before the former team usa

gymnastics doctor was arrested. he's serving decades in prison for assaulting female athletes, including medal-winning olympic gymnasts. >> i'm grateful for a measure of accountability. >> it's a very big deal. it's the fbi acknowledging that they screwed up, and they screwed up big. >> the settlement when the details are worked out would bring the total payments for nassar's abuse to nearly $1 billion. airline giant boeing is in the spotlight at two senate hearings over allegations of safety failures and quality-control problems inside the company. cbs' kris van cleave reports on a whistleblower who's making some serious accusations. i was told frankly to shut up. >> reporter: quality engineer-turned-whistleblower sam salehpour warned of safety concerns about the 787 dreamliner on capitol hill. >> are these plans safe? >> the airplanes are not being built per spec. >> the company's response to you

was to threats -- threaten you? >> threaten you, sideline you. >> reporter: he testified at one of two overlapping senate hearings focused on safety and quality control problems at boeing. >> this focus on money over safety is a bad investment. >> reporter: sam salehpour claims boeing is not following its own production guidelines when connecting key pieces of the 787 fuselage. he fears it could lead it a -- lead to a structural failure years down the line. >> we have faulty engineering that they're trying to shove on our throats. >> reporter: the faa is investigating those claims, but boeing says they are inaccurate, pointing to stress testing like this, saying extensive and rigorous testing of the fuselage and heavy maintenance checks of 700 in-service planes to date have found zero evidence of air frame fatigue. we are fully confident in the safety and durability of the 787 dreamliner. 737 max whistleblower ed pierson said he's given documents to the

israel and iran are talking tough, ratcheting up the rhetoric as israel decides how and when to respond to last weekend's massive drone and missile attack. prime minister netanyahu says the jewish state will make its own decisions and do whatever it -- whatever is necessary to defend itself. iran's president warned that even the tiniest invasion of its territory would bring a massive and harsh response. in northern israel, the violence is surging. the lebanese group hezbollah fired rockets and drones at a military facility injuring at least 14 israeli soldiers, six seriously. the israeli military says its fighter jets retaliated. a new video has emerged from october 7th showing the apparent kidnapping of the father of the two red-haired boys. the youngest hostages. the footage was shared by israel's president on x. as for the cease-fire and the hostage release talks, qatar's prime minister says negotiations are stumbling after hamas rejected the latest proposal.

those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the honolulu star advertiser" says the communications breakdown led to a lack of alerts during last year's deadly maui wildfires, that's according to a new report from the hawaii attorney general's office. the report says police, firefighters, and emergency officials could not communicate with each other after cell networks went down. residents were unable to receive alerts about what was happening. more than 100 people were killed in the historic town of lahaina. thousands of homes and businesses were destroyed. "the arizona republic" reports democrats in the state senate pushed ahead with a measure to try and repeal arizona's civil war-era near-total ban on abortions. it came after house republicans blocked attempts to repeal the ban yesterday. some republicans in the senate joined with democrats to let a repeal proposal advance. last week the state supreme court ruled the 1864 law can be reinstated.

it allows abortions only to save the life of a mother. and "the toronto star" says air canada employees are among nine people facing charges in last year's theft of more than $20 million in gold bars and cash from a storage unit at a toronto airport. yesterday officials said a joint canadian-u.s. investigation has led to the arrest of six people. authorities are searching for three others including a former air canada manager. police say the gold was melted down and used to buy illegal firearms. only $90,000 of the stolen gold has been recovered. still to come, banished from the nba. what a player allegedly revealed in a gambling scandal that got him banned for life. banned for .

the nba is banning toronto raptors jontay porter for life after a league investigation found he provided confidential information to sports betters and bet on games himself. some of the information involved his own health status before a game last month. the league says he even bet on his own team to lose, although he did not play in that game. the push to get elon musk his multibillion dollar payday and a toyota recall. here's carissa lawson with today's cbs "moneywatch." >> reporter: on wall street, the major indices sank into a sea of red on wednesday. the dow last 45 points. the nasdaq took a 181-point plunge, and the s&p 500 shed 29 points. toyota is recalling 55,000 prius and prius prime vehicles in the u.s. the automaker says water can get into the electronic rear door latches, potentially causing a short circuit. that could cause the doors to
