commander in chief to face criminal prosecution. now the search for 12 impartial jurors. first, awaiting israel's next move. after iran launches an unprecedented attack, firing hundreds of missiles and drones on the jewish state. the push from world leaders to avoid a regional war. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. iran's attack on israel is the scenario everyone has feared since the october 7th hamas massacre. a state-to-state confrontation that could spiral out of control. this morning both sides are claiming victory. iran striking a balance between retaliation for the deadly strike in syria and avoiding any major casualties or damage. israel says that its air defenses backed by allies fended off nearly all of the more than 300 drones and missiles. u.s. officials tell cbs news five of the ballistic missiles landed in israeli territory causing light damage to an airbase. the only serious injury, a

7-year-old bedouin girl hit by shrapnel that slammed into her house from an intercepted missile. the u.n. security council met sunday for emergency talks. the meeting ended without any action. cbs' debora patta is in tel aviv with the latest. >> reporter: iran's first-ever direct attack on israel, dragging their shadow war into the open. israel's powerful air defense systems intercepted more than 300 iranian drones and missiles. hard-line iranian supporters celebrated the strikes as the regime boasted their operation true promise had exceeded expectations. israel's war cabinet favors retaliation but is divided on timing. a former senior israeli diplomat to the u.s., alon pinkas, told us the stakes are high for prime minister benjamin netanyahu. >> if the u.s. puts its weight

on him not to retaliate, he will be basically paralyzed and incapable of reacting. he could go ahead and do this, but the risk would be extraordinarily high. >> reporter: he said netanyahu has wanted to escalate the conflict with iran since november to detract from his political problems at home including growing anger over his mishandling of the war in gaza. for palestinians trapped in that war, there is no distraction from the misery. tired of living in tents, thousands defied israeli orders not to return to the northern part of gaza. we're dead either way, sujud ad obaid said, "and i'd rather die in my home." but some never made the perilous journey home, more than 20 injured were rushed to hospital after israeli soldiers opened fire killing at least one woman.

everyone else was forced to turn around with the menacing sound of fighter jets overhead terrorizing young children already traumatized by more than half a year of war. there was only minimal damage to an israeli military base, but a further escalation of this conflict that nobody wants is still not out of the question. debora patta, cbs news, tel aviv, israel. u.s. forces destroyed more than 80 drones and at least six missiles bound for israel. president biden personally thanked the fighter squadrons for the successful mission. >> you guys are the best in the whole damn world, man. >> mr. president, we thank you for your words. >> president biden met with g7 leaders by video conference sunday in an effort to stop an all-out war in the region. the leaders condemned the attack and expressed solidarity and support to israel. skyler henry with the latest

from the white house. >> reporter: a u.s. official with direct knowledge of the conflict in israel tells cbs news president biden told prime minister benjamin netanyahu america will not participate in a retaliatory strike on iran following saturday's drone and missile attack though the administration says it will protect u.s. forces and troops in the region if they're threatened. >> they wanted to cause damage, no question about that. but they were utterly unsuccessful in doing so. [ siren ] >> reporter: senior administration officials called israel's defense, quote, spectacular, touting the extraordinary level of coordination from allies to help. but the challenges still remain in the region, and with public perception. >> what i think israel should do is pause for the moment, consult with its close allies and partners, assess the damage and the activity, and then decide what is the most appropriate response. >> reporter: a new cbs news poll released sunday gathered before iran's attack shows nearly 40%

of americans want president biden to encourage israel to stop military actions in gaza. 63% of americans say that more humanitarian aid should be sent to palestinians, but most republicans polled still oppose that. lawmakers on capitol hill agree israel needs support. but what that measure looks like is still in question. >> the best way to help israel rebuild its anti-missile and anti-drone capacity is by passing that supplemental. >> reporter: skyler henry, cbs news, the white house. and speaking of that security aid senator schumer mentioned, house speaker mike johnson says that he will try to advance the stalled legislation this week. the $95 billion package which has been held up by house republicans for two months now provides aid to israel and ukraine as well as u.s. allies in asia and humanitarian assistance for civilians in ukraine and gaza. the white house says president biden discussed the urgent need for aid with congressional leaders yesterday.

"cbs mornings" will have much more on this crisis in the middle east, and white house national security communications adviser john kirby will join the discussion about the next moves. now to the other big story of the day. donald trump's criminal trial gets under way in new york city with jury selection. the former president will be in court every day as he faces dozens of counts of falsifying business records including claims he tried to hide alleged hush-money payments to an adult film star. naomi ruchim joins us from outside the courthouse with the details on what we can expect today. good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. selecting a jury in this historic case will be a tall task. lawyers on both sides have acknowledged that finding a group of people who don't already have a strong opinion in either direction of the former president will be extremely challenging. and imagine this -- the former president will be sitting in a room full of ordinary new

yorkers who will eventually decide if he's guilty or not. >> when i walk into that courtroom, i know i will have the love of 200 million americans behind me. >> reporter: today donald trump becomes the first former u.s. president to face trial in a criminal case in manhattan. >> have a good time watching. >> reporter: trump faces 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, including claims that he covered up $130,000 in hush-money payments to adult film star stormy daniels through his former fixer michael cohen to hide an alleged previous relationship with daniels ahead of the 2016 presidential election. >> you cannot and will not normalize serious criminal conduct. >> reporter: trump denies the encounter and has pleaded not guilty to the charges. presiding judge juan merchan has placed a gag order on trump after he's made public comments bashing the judge, prosecutors, and cohen.

>> i will be forced to sit fully gagged, i'm not allowed to talk. >> reporter: first up today is jury selection. local experts say it could take weeks to cut jurors down to just 12 and alternates. >> ultimately there is no one who is going to enter that courthouse who doesn't have an opinion about donald trump. >> reporter: that's why some legal experts say that trump's lawyers are likely to file a motion to try to move the trial to another city. and jurors will have to answer a lengthy questionnaire, more than 40 questions. things like are you a republican or a democrat? who you voted for, have you ever donated to a candidate in your lifetime? also, do you follow the former president on social media? anne-marie, you can imagine this will take a long time. they're expecting this part of the process alone to be a council of days or perhaps even longer.

enforcement officers were shot and killed in new york state. authorities say syracuse police officers were conducting a traffic stop in connection with a report of a stolen vehicle last night when the driver sped away. they traced the vehicle to a house where a syracuse officer and an onondaga sheriff's deputy were shot. the suspect was also killed. arrests in the disappearance of two kansas women, and new details in the sydney mall attack. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the bbc reports the man who went on a stabbing rampage at a shoal -- at a shopping mall in sydney targeted women, according to police. five women and a male security guard were killed saturday. 12 others were hurt including a 9-month-old girl whose mother died. police say the 40-year-old assailant had a history of mental illness, and they're not treating it as a terror attack. he was shot and killed by police. the "chicago tribune" says a 9-year-old girl was killed and ten others injured in a mass shooting in the city. the girl's father says his

family was outside during a confirmation party saturday when shots rang out. his daughter was killed. he was shot and injured. four of the victims were children including a 1-year-old and 8-year-old. witnesses reported a vehicle approaching the group and began shooting. police believe it was gang related. and the "wichita eagle" says four people were arrested in connection with the disappearance of two kansas women. veronica butler and jillian kelley vanished last month while traveling to pick up butler's children in oklahoma. their abandoned vehicle was found in oklahoma near the border with kansas. four people were arrested over the weekend including the grandmother of butler's children. they each face several charges including murder and kidnapping. police continue to search for the missing women. still to come, the economic fallout of the middle east conflict. a check on oil futures following iran's attack on israel. when you have moderate—to—severe eczema, it's okay to show off.
