oh, boy, get ready. san francisco police get ready to celebrate a milestone a decade in the making. the reforms aimed at restoring trust with the police. it is not perfect. but we have finished. some changes you don't see immediately. but change happens when it is done right. who knew middle schools had strong decisions. >> we would like to ask why takeaway something that has been so beneficial and so crucial? it is happening, storm clouds are moving in on our weekend plans. you can probably feel a big cool down today. rain is returning to the bay area with the first showers arriving overnight. it is staying dry long enough to enjoy fun events this weekend and this evening for the second

time this year. the night market is under way on grant street in san francisco. and across the bay in oakland. a nice turn out for the return of first fridays after a three month break. let's get to darren peck to figure it all out. >> reporter: a view there on the monitor of it, first, we will take a look at what we did today. it was 80s, today, lower 60s. many places 20 degrees cooler. so you are already noticing the change. we will go down another 7-9 degrees tomorrow for some places. most of us in the upper 50s for day time highs that is it. let's look at the rain on this. you can see the good band of green sitting up there. as we come in for a close-up look there are showers getting close to us now. it will take awhile. watch, it does not happen until late tonight before the leading

edge of that gets into sonoma county. that will be 10:00, 11:00, it would not be all of the heavy rain. what we are waiting for is midnight until 7:00 a.m. that is when the steady rain, the wall, moving over much of the bay. it will not be downpours but it will be widespread, steady, it will give us half an inch of rain for some of the wetter spots before sunrise even happens tomorrow. that is the bulk of the rain actually from the whole system like between midnight and 7:00 a.m. then, a little bit of a break. when we get back together again in the forecast we will look at phase two. that has the chance of being more exciting. occasional shower in there. i will see you in a bit. >> darren, thank you. san francisco police are celebrating a milestone in an effort to reform the department that started seven years ago. restoring public trust after high profile police shootings

including the killing of mario woods. they completed 272 reforms required by the california department of justice. everything from limiting use of force to preventing bias in policing and hiring. so, data released shows a drop in the use of force incidents. that is between 2016 and 2022. although the number of police shootings was up last year, five people were shot in 2023, compared to a low of 2 in 2021. so, our wilson walker has reaction to the progress and the acknowledgement that the work is not finished. >> my name is felicia jones, i am founder of justice for mario woods. >> reporter: today was a milestone in a journey that started years ago having been pushing for greater accountability for the police since the shooting of mario

woods in 2015. >> even though it may be a world stage in regards to the super bowl it has to be a world stage in justice. >> reporter: nearly a decade later here she was leading a cheer in a room full of police officers marking what everyone agrees is a step and not a finish line >> it is not perfect. but we have finished. >> reporter: san francisco police say they have essentially finished all 272 reforms recommended by state and federal justice departments. mayor london breed in an election year and the chief of police described it as a milestone accomplished in spite of headwinds. >> we not only continue to push forward with this work and made it happen, we did so during a challenging time after a global pandemic where we saw crime start to skyrocket. >> you make the adjustments to keep the balance. prop e and what the voters voted for it is

is achiefable. our policies still have to provide guidance for us to do things in the spirit of what this reform initiative is all about. >> reporter: jones says it was a day to mark progress in an effort that does not end for san francisco or any other city. >> we are doing better than some, you know, and as the mayor said and as the chief said, you know, as an activist the work continues. it is not perfect. but the work continues. >> reporter: the chief invoked the rodney king beating down in los angeles as a way of casting it as something that is happening in many different places in a time over generations now. 27 recommendations submitted by the city. they are now awaiting final approval >> san francisco public defenders office released a statement that said in part we find it difficult to celebrate this milestone while sfpd still stops, searches and uses force

on people of color, particularly black san franciscoians. when officers represented by the police officers association. there is also concern a prop that passed recently could set back reforms. prop e. will reduce the threshold for filing use of force reports to only if a person was injured. if an officer believes the force was likely to cause injury or if the officer used or pointed a gun. san jose police arrested two arms dealers suspected of illegally manufacturing and selling assault weapon, the suspects have been identified as david rios and dustin mole. they are manufacturing firearms and two assault rifles and thousands of rounds of ammunition were found. they have been charged with conspiracy to manufacture assault weapon. still ahead. call it the

could generate such division within a school community. people on both sides of the debate believe they are doing what is best for kids. the reason is, these decisions are so hotly debated is because they can set kids up for success or failure in middle school, high school, college and beyond. >> the advance math in 7th grade was a stepping stone into algebra one. >> reporter: she is a teacher and parent. both halves of her identity are in agreement that the changes to south san francisco school district is thinking on making are not a formula for success. >> as an educator and a mom i will try my best as a math teacher to help my son supplement with those resources. however, this is not just about my son. it is about all of my students. >> reporter: where grace teaches the top math students take a special summer course followed by an accelerated 7th

grade math class that sets them up for algebra. the first sign of trouble was when they cut the summer class. >> i would like to ask why takeaway something that has been so beneficial and so crucial. >> reporter: a spokesperson for the school system was insist ant the district is not getting rid of it but changing how students get there. steering most towards an accelerated 8th grade class. the superintendent says the district's goal is to quote ensure they have a grasp of math skills before moving into algebra. >> reporter: but math teachers who spent decades in the class room say the district is tinkering with something that is not broken. >> without the kids in advanced 7th grade before they get into algebra they will not get it. >> reporter: the district has to make a final formal decision about the changes. grace says she will continue to fight for

her son and her students against a system that she believes will not add up to success. >> and being able to give all of my studentace i voice when they can not be heard. >> reporter: the district is still working out the details how to implement this next year. opponents hope there is still time to convince the district to change course. >> oh, boy. >> a topic you don't want to get in the middle of. sticky. how do they measure success? >> right now, not every single 8th grader does algebra. that is the first thing, do more make it there under the new system and how do they perform if they do? >> thank you for adding it up for us. see you in your shows tonight. a tour of amazon turned into a whole lot more for a group of bay area students. the seven high school seniors found out they had won a major scholarship meaning amazon will chip in up to $40,000 towards their college division. they

will be offered a paid internship at the company. they describe the surprise, scholarship as a game changer. >> i was told this is going to be just an interview. i had no idea. i am so shocked. this is going to mean a lot to me and my family. i will not have to be a burden on them >> the parents must be excited. >> reporter: it is to expand access to computer science education in under served communities. 400 students were selected nationwide. what a huge gift to such talented kids there. all right, let's head over to darren peck for more on our weather which is changing as we speak. >> yes. looks different out there today. looking at the day time highs, the view out of the virtual set out the window shows you things have already started to change. we can clearly see and track the storm now using first alert doppler. the leading edge of the rain is off of the coast what we care about is when it gets down here. coming in for a close-up look. we will switch from live and put it in here. it shows us the light rain here on the

coast. it will take awhile. as close as it is. it will take awhile to get over towards us. a few light showers in the north bay by 10:00. it is really after midnight when we get the widespread rain that overtakes the entire bay. then we are in it. from midnight until 7:00 a.m. it is not downpours, not crazy kind of rain. it will be steady enough throughout the morning hours before sunrise that will probably get half an inch of rain in that time frame. and then look at the opening here. that gets us into late morning, so, don't get fooled by that at 10:00 a.m. when the rain is done and there might be a few breaks in the clouds there. because the second half of the system then comes in for the afternoon and the evening and this is the one that is a little more sporadic. there is a congregation of more of them as we get towards the evening. like between 5:00 and 10:00 on saturday night is when we have a chance to see some of the isolated thunderstorms. then on sunday, there is a final

possibility for a few light showers. it really does not look like much at all. sunday is going to be a good day. so, of the two days if you got something you got to do outdoors, moving it to sunday it will work out better. we will use the forecast imagery here in a second because i want to spotlight where we might get another round of snow here. two usual suspect places when the snow level gets down to around 3,000 feet. mount dia, blo on the highest peak you see it over there on the east bay. what we want to spotlight is the southern end of the range down here. look out, towards the west side of the santa clara valley. that is where mount hamilton is, the lake observatory sits on that. you see how the hills angle out. we are looking at them here. watch saturday morning, not a lot. the snow level gets around to 3,000 feet. it is enough that we get snow there. maybe a little snow in the santa cruz mountains. for the north bay. you want to be up in the higher peaks through the national

forest to notice some light snow. i don't think we would get much. but, we go to the big picture view and look at the sierra, oh, only a half a foot. this is not a big snow maker. half a foot of snow, the weather service did not put out a winter storm watch, really. the snow level down to around 4,000 feet. watch what happens when we change our perspective, by the way. if you are going to be in the sierra you will need chains. it should not be impassable. but, instead of looking at winter weather advisories we will change our perspective. we will color in the map using the storm prediction center's forecast for where that 10-20% chance for isolated storms is on saturday. that is what we looked at. the likely time frame here at home is 5:00, 10:00 on saturday night. not many of them. we had our fair share of those over the last several symptoms, most people have not gotten it. they have happened in the bay. they

happen over limited areas. don't be surprised if you are part of the bay this time happens to be that one isolated location that ends up with small hail and saturday night when it happens. is this it? more coming. going out 10 days and from now through then, there is not anything. puts us through april 22nd. maybe an inside slider there. springish. and not really do anything for us. so, for at least the foreseeable future this one is it. does not mean there will not be more after that. but, i mean, it should quiet down now. it is an interesting spring so far. keeping things active. here is a seven-day forecast. to show you how next week not only are we not getting rained on look at that day time high by thursday. 80s are coming back. all right. back to you. >> all right, thank you very

. curious bear got too close and interrupted operations the young bear was spotted monday looking around a trash can near the peak. they shutdown two of the lifts, the bear had been caught and released into a more remote area last year. wildlife officials say it may have been trying to make its way home. they are trying to scare the
