spacex launched a falcon 9 rocket holding 11 satellites on sunday. it's part of what the company calls its rideshare program. the falcon's first stage booster also successfully landed back at cape canaveral. and the cmt music awards were held last night in austin, texas. jelly roll was the night's big winner, taking home three prizes including video of the year for his song "need a favor." for more download the cbs news app on your cell phone or connected tv. i'm matt pieper, cbs news, new it's monday, april 8th, 2024. this is "cbs news mornings." are you ready for the great american eclipse? we are just hours away. the excitement is building, the crowds are growing. but the big question -- will the weather cooperate? six months of war. israeli troops on the move. much of gaza now in ruins. and yet for families of hostages
4:31 am
still being held by hamas, time stands still. plus, more trouble for boeing. a souhwest plane forced to make an emergency landing after an engine cover falls off during takeoff. good morning. it is good to be with you. i'm matt pieper in for anne-marie green. we start with today's rare celestial event. it will turn day into night. are you ready for the solar eclipse? do you have your spot staked out and gear including glasses? the weather could be dicey. clouds are forecast for much of the eclipse route. texas is likely to have the heaviest cloud cover, while vermont, maine, and canada are expected to have the clearest skies. cbs' lana zak is in indianapolis where people have been camping out all weekend waiting for the big moment. a lot of excited people i'm sure. >> reporter: absolutely. we definitely have our space staked out, matt. you know, the last time indianapolis had a total solar eclipse was 819 years ago.
4:32 am
so you can imagine the level of excitement here as 40,000 to 50,000 people are expected right here to witness this cosmic kismet. today the indianapolis motor speedway hosts a different history-making event, becoming what's believed to be the largest viewing site in the country for the solar eclipse. >> every indycar driver views this place as your kind of sued -- pseudo-home. >> reporter: alexander rossi won the indy 500 in 2016 but is looking to slow down when the moon blocks out the sun. >> i think i want to be somewhere that i can be alone. we should strive to enjoy in our individual ways. >> reporter: indianapolis is one of hundreds of cities and towns across more than a dozen states that lie within the 115-mile-wide path of totality. >> i think it's going to be cool. >> reporter: the thompson family drove nine hours from minnesota to get the full experience. >> it will be memorable because that is the unique part, and i'll say i get to see that.
4:33 am
i know silk where i was when i was. >> reporter: i'm on the track of the indianapolis motor speedway. the only one out here, except in a few hours i'm going to be joined by tens of thousands with all of us, our faces pointed to the sky. >> the eclipse speaks to me in so many ways. >> reporter: barrett caldwell is professor of aeronautics and astronautics. for his the science is one part of the event. >> spiritually, emotionally just a meaningful experience. one of the most amazing things that i think is available to humanity. >> reporter: for those missing out on the path of totality, the next solar eclipse to appear in the lower 48 isn't until 2044. though parts of europe will experience one in just two years. this is really a very special solar eclipse in part because the moon is currently 8,000 miles closer to the earth than the last solar eclipse. that means the path of totality is about 75% bigger.
4:34 am
more people are going to get to witness this one, and it's going to last almost a full minute longer. matt? >> wow. you sound like bill nye out there. thank you so much for that. >> reporter: i'm excited. >> all of us are. absolutely. the forecast in texas is not dampening the spirits of people hoping to get a good view of the eclipse. events were held in dallas this weekend, ahead of the celestial event. special eclipse glasses were handed out as people try to keep a sunny disposition despite the possibility of clouds blocking the view. >> i would same i'm nervous, but i'm trying to think about it as i've never been to texas. try to enjoy the weekend as a whole. >> people in western new york state and new england are hoping for better weather to watch the eclipse there. tourists have flocked to buffalo where special eclipse merchandise is flying off store shelves. buses loaded with visitors from as close as pennsylvania to as far as europe are checking things out, including nearby niagara falls. >> such a wonderful opportunity to talk to so many great things and really be ambassadors for

our city. >> i've explored a little bit of elmwood and we saw the eternal flame. and now we came to niagara, and it's been excellent. >> tourists have also packed the streets of burlington, vermont, one of the prime spots for getting a good view. the forecast for northern new england to canada is looking bright. and we will have live coverage of today's solar eclipse here's on cbs and streaming on paramount plus. turning now to the israel-hamas war where sunday marked six months since the massacre. the israeli military has withdrawn forces from southern gaza, and there's growing frustration in israel over what some see as the government's inaction to help free about 130 hostages that are still in captivity nearly a quarter believed to be dead. cbs' naomi ruchim joins us here in new york with the details. >> reporter: good morning. in one positive sign from the region overnight, a fresh round of negotiations has begun in
4:36 am
cairo where according to state tv there, all parties have at least agreed on basic points. still, six months since the attacks on october 7th and the war that has followed, families of the hostages are pleading for a deal. over the weekend the grief-stricken families of some of the roughly 1,200 israelis killed by hamas on october 7th gathered to mark six months since the horrific attacks. >> missing them badly. and we're looking for a way to keep on going without them. it's really difficult. >> let my people go! >> reporter: around the u.s. and in tel aviv, protesters took to the streets to demand a deal to release the remaining israeli hostages taken by the militants that day. >> i feel that i have failed, and i feel that our governments have failed, and i feel that all the parties at the table have failed to get these 133 souls back home.
4:37 am
>> reporter: frustration is also growing over israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu's handling of the conflict. yesterday netanyahu said his country is one step away from victory. israeli troops began reducing their numbers in gaza over the weekend, though officials there say it's an evolution of the war effort and not a withdrawal. >> the indications that we've been getting this morning is this is really largely rest and refit for troops. >> reporter: the troop drawdown has prompted some of the displaced to return home for the first time. more humanitarian aid trucks traveled into the region sunday, a move promised by israel days after its defense forces mistakenly launched a strike that killed seven world central kitchen aid workers. the biden administration is also facing pressure from both parties in congress over its handling of israel. some prominent democrats have sent a letter to the white house urging it to do its own probe of the world central kitchen strike and to reconsider sending
