live in new york city where there are reports of an earthquake. a u.s. geological survey reports a quake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.8 centered near lebanon, new jersey. new york governor kathy hochul posted on x that the quake was felt throughout the state saying, quote, my team is assessing the impact to any damage that may have occurred and we will update throughout the day. so far, no reports of damage but it interrupted a united nations meeting. >> a place where children can see humanitarian services and normality. >> after a brief pause, the un security council meeting continued. members remained in place. people across the eastern seaboard are reporting they felt rumbling. no reports of any damage from that preliminary magnitude 4.8 quake. back here at home, we are dealing with a first alert

weather day. take a look at conditions in the santa cruz mountains. the chp shared these photos of a snow-covered highway 35. we are even seeing flurries coming down on mount diablo. i got to see those flurries yesterday from my condo. the latest spring storm will keep highway 1 closed near big sur . take a look at this. residents will be cut off throughout the weekend because caltrans closed the roadway that was damaged in last weekend's rain. that damage -- section slipped right there and fell into the sea. the chp had set up convoys to lead drivers in and out of big sur but that is on hold until tomorrow. residents were warned that they would be isolated for several days. now to a live look across the bay area. it looks beautiful outside but don't be fooled. get a jacket. make sure you bundle up a bit. on this first alert weather day, you never know what to expect. it is a cool and cloudy day with bay area -- it is wild to

think that just a couple of days ago we were in the 70s with plenty of sunshine but today reflects more of a winter like day and there is a reason why. that storm came in yesterday and brought in a series of showers, some hail up in the north bay. for all of us throughout the bay area, we were thinking, how long will this last? the storm is starting to decay into the afternoon hours. by lunchtime, some light showers into the east bay and more clear conditions along the coast into the peninsula. we could see some clouds roll in and a light patch of showers. by 7:00 tonight, we see that start to move into the east and then we have clear skies heading into this weekend. it is perfect timing because the giants are taking on the padres and we are expecting dry skies and chilly temperatures. the temperatures will sit in the 50s heading into this weekend but by early next week, a big change around the corner. we will be seeing some 70s return into the bay as early as monday with plenty of sunshine in the forecast from

san francisco all the way down along the peninsula into the santa clara valley as well. now, a live look at the coliseum where the a's are playing their final season in oakland before skipping town. the team announced yesterday that it will make a temporary move to sacramento starting next year. the team's lease expires at the coliseum after this season but management did not accept the city's offer to extend it. the plan is to end up in the sin city but their new vegas stadium won't be ready until at least 2028. they will be moving 85 miles away to sutter health park in sacramento. the minor league stadium is the home of the river cats, the giants' aaa affiliate and it is smaller than what the team is used to. it fits over 14,000 compared to the coliseum's 63,000. keep in mind that fewer than 11,000 fans showed up to the a's home games on average last season. the sacrament of kings on the stadium and the kings owner is a longtime friend of a's owner john fisher. the team told us that the financial terms of the agreement are

private. >> i want to extend my thanks to my good friend and great businessperson, great associate. working with you guys has been a dream for our guys as well. >> now, we focus on our neighbors, the people who depend on the a's playing in oakland to make their living. the union representing them says john fisher 's abandonment of the team is a shameful move. we talked to a longtime employee who stands to lose a lot. >> on game day, it is not just the fans that fill the coliseum. workers from the ushers to concession stand servers are there to make the game day experience enjoyable. >> they come and see the games but our service makes a lot of people come back. you guys can come out here and do the job that we do.

>> tony evans has been in the hospitality industry. >> all good things come to an end. >> tony knew this day was coming. >> i never had confidence. he had been trying to leave for years. >> i did not think it would come so soon. tony feels betrayed and abandoned with the a's moving to sacramento. >> it was like, john fisher. some of you guys are loyal to the a's . i just got in and i bought it and i don't care about you. >> tony says many of the workers are just like him, seniors trying to find a way to supplement their social security and those that are dependent on healthcare. >> at some point, i feel sorry for the way it fiscally impacts some of my coworkers. how do

we get through the summer? >> it has been a struggle without any fans in the stands. pure employees have been needed on game day. fewer shifts means they don't earn enough points to qualify for healthcare. tony realizes it may be tough for a while but the one thing he won't let fisher take away is hope for the future. >> oakland will bounce back. i am positive we will bounce back. i am not going to say bye , i will just say see you later. >> even though so many saw this coming, there is a finality to the teams move out of oakland that is sitting teams hard. we spoke to some to give them a chance to air their frustration. >> people are upset. they are disappointed. they are angry. i can't ever get away from this. this is permanent. this is never coming off. >> the a's have been here since 1968. it is very, very sad. i don't cry, man, but i am really torn up.

>> as the a's button up deals in sacramento in las vegas, there is a deal that needs to be buttoned up here in the bay. the a's bought half of the coliseum complex or alameda county back in 2018. what will they do with their half? the oakland roots and soul soccer teams will play at the coliseum next season but there was no sign of any other major leaguers planning to play there. the place is old the city officials say they are committing -- committed to revitalizing the stadium. we will have continuing coverage on air and on our website, www.kpix.com and on our cbs news bay area app. it is opening-day in the

welcome back. it is 9:11 on this friday morning and we are getting a look at what is happening around the bay today. a live look at oakland where weather is having a big impact. the city is canceling its first friday event. today was expected to be the events return from the three month hiatus but organizers say that they are postponing it again because of the weather. they say they are working to make it happen next friday but if not,

they will be back in may. people can head to concord for some fun. the city's tourism bureau has launched a restaurant bingo for the month of april. foodies get prices for eating out at different restaurants around the city and there is more than 20 participating spots. the prizes include free movie tickets and a chance to win other raffle prizes. live now to san francisco's oracle park where baseball is back. the giants play their home opener in san francisco -- first pitch is set for 1:35 this afternoon against the san diego padres. >> it is good news for local fans. as max darrow reports, it is the local businesses who are the most ready for the big game. new banners are on the walls that oracle park, ready to welcome giants fans for the 2024 home opener. just about a block and a half away from the willie mays gates, we cannot

wait. like most restaurants and shops near the ballpark , he is busier when it is baseball season. >> a big difference. it adds up . 35, 40% when they are playing. >> the numbers look even better when the giants are winning and fans filled the stadium. but, that has been a bit of a challenge for the team in recent years. the 2023 season, giants attendance was a little under 31,000 fans per game, excluding 2020 and 2021, that is the second lowest the giants average attendance has been since the giants moved from candlestick in 2000 to what is now oracle park. with a fresh squad including new players like michelle troconis -- jung hoo lee and more, he thinks this could be a good one for his favorite club and restaurant. >> i can't wait to see what

fielder jung hoo lee. he became a star of south korea's baseball league . how his presence is renewing interest not only on the home field but for korean baseball fields -- players across the bay. this is where all the action will take place. you can just feel it in honor of opening-day. we dug into our archives to give everyone a taste of opening-day, 1969. >> you could be a skeptic about the game of baseball but say what you will. there is something special about opening-day. here at candlestick park, the san francisco giants play their home opener against the padres. there is something very different about opening-day. of the 35,000 fans who are now beginning to feel candlestick park, i would say maybe 15,000 or 20,000 would be back again until world series time. it is the one day of the year where the millions of willie mays and clarence guest on become

synonymous. there is also something special about opening-day, a day where peanuts and popcorn and cracker jacks give way to plan table cloths, caviar and a bottle of cabernet. this is a society event. if you want to see baseball fans, somebody once said, come on the second day of the season, not opening-day. this afternoon it will be one for the san francisco giants who will be opposed by the fellow named kirby. it is opening-day and that is the story from candlestick park. i've got to go, my caviar is getting lumpy. >> who knew, caviar and baseball. we want to give a shout out to the archives at sf state because we cannot make moments like this happen without them. group maintains our extensive archive. let s take a live look on this friday morning. it is a first alert weather day. something to keep in mind as we get set for the weekend and today. bring a jacket and a blanket. if you're headed out to the game, bring some gloves.

it is a cool and cloudy day for us in the bay area with chilly temperatures after that cold front swept throughout the bay area, bringing in some showers. a couple of temperatures to last into the forecast today where we are seeing 10 degrees below average from san jose down into the santa clara valley, all the way into the east bay . the rest of us are in the 50s too. let me show you that. as we head down into the santa clara valley, our highs reflect areas like the peninsula where we have been in the 50s. for our inland areas, it was easter sunday and monday where we were talking about 70s. this is a big change for us today. we will talk a little more about that storm. not only did it bring in cooler temperatures but it also brought in all that rain too and we are seeing some lingering showers heading into the afternoon hours today. it will only be in our inland areas. take a look at this. by lunchtime, partly cloudy skies in our inland areas. more clear

along the coast. that will change throughout the afternoon. it will be a time where clouds roll into the local community. into the 3:00 hour, we see the showers forming your concord and antioch , up into fairfield where we could see a 10th of an inch of rain. by midnight tonight and heading into the forecast this weekend, we dry up fast which is perfect timing because there are plenty of things to do heading into this weekend. for example, the padres taking on the giants or the giants taking on the padres. we are going to win regard this. partly cloudy skies in the forecast. lots of changes around the forecast for us. let's dive into that seven-day. we are talking about 60s this weekend. still cool and cloudy but by next week, high pressure builds its way and. 80s as we head into next week. it is dry and it will be a warm one for us. massive job layoffs [♪♪] how you feel can be affected by the bacteria in your gut. try new align probiotic bloating relief plus food digestion.

payroll. let's see how the markets are reacting right now on this friday morning. things are in the green, up 401 points. structured apple is laying off more than 600 employees in the santa clara county according to a new state filing. tfrancisco chronicle says the job titles include shop managers and hardware engineers. walmart may owe you money as part of the $45 million settlement. the class-action lawsuit accused the retailer of overcharging for packaged meat , poultry, seafood and bag citrus. customers who bought those so-called weighted groceries have until june 5 to file a claim online and you can receive up to $500. the mcdonald's corporation says that it is buying back all 225 of its israeli franchises. this comes after months of low sales in the region due to pro-palestinian boycotts . the

we are now just three days away from the solar eclipse and millions of people will be looking up at the moon casts a shadow across the middle of the country. here in california, we will be treated to a partial eclipse. around the bay, there is plenty of viewing parties for the cosmic event. oaklands chabot space & science center is holding a special party for the eclipse . they are inviting people to come watch and take part in some special science demonstrations. sky gazers will also get eclipse safe glasses and have a chance to look at the interstellar spectacle through a telescope. >> it reminds us that we are part of a much larger universe.
