right now on the afternoon edition, hundreds of thousands of california workers are getting a big pay bump. good afternoon. i am ryan yamamoto. starting today fast food workers across the state will earn $20 an hour. that is a bump from minimum wage of $16 an hour. the hike stems from a law passed last year and applies to chain with more than 60 national locations. lawmakers argue more people are depending on the industry to

provide for their families, people like maria hernandez. she says every cent counts. >> i was super excited. i mean, imagine getting paid the minimum, just 15, you know, i was working a lot of hours and still making basically no money. >> on the other side of the seismic shift, al e. johnson owns aunt anne's pretzel locations and he says the increase will cost him about 470,000 a year. he is considering selling his business and leaving the industry all together. >> i wanted to do right by my employees. i want to pay them as much as i can. this bill has really hit our operations hard. we are no longer hiring. we are not back filling positions. we are not growing in the state anymore. >> the law won't directly impact other restaurants like small coffee chains or mom and

pop diners but they could have to adjust pay as they compete for the same employees. in oakland police are looking for the driver in a deadly hit and run. a person was struck by a car and when he fell to the ground he was hit by another car. both drivers took off and police and crime stoppers are offering up to $10,000 reward money for information leading to the arrest of the drivers. an effort to rename the oakland airport, that's getting push back. visitors often do not know where oakland is, so they choose sfo to get to the bay area. officials want to change the name so san francisco bay oakland international airport. port of oakland has two to decide on a potential name change. not everyone is on board. the state senator scott wiener tweeted i

love oakland but it is oakland. it's not san francisco. it should not be cutting and pasting san francisco international airport into its name. a live look at sfo where the airport says it saw a boost in travel during spring break. more than 2 million passengers traveled from march 15 to the 31st. that's nearly up 10% from last year. in monterey, drivers are urked urged to ahead highway 1 at big sur. it's about 17 miles southwest of monterey. convoys are leading cars throughout the area and those with camping reservations will be issued a refund. a live look outside, clear sunny skies to start the week. let's check in with jessica burch. we are expecting another dry day with highs similar to our easter forecast. we are

seeing 70s from livermore to the santa clara valley. along the peninsula, we are holding on to 70s, upper 60s near san francisco. across the bridge in oakland dry conditions are expected throughout this afternoon and throughout our forecast tomorrow as well. the clouds start rolling in ahead of a cold front in wednesday's forecast. by thursday that cold front makes its way in leaving us with rainy skies, chance of light thunderstorm activity. to add to that, we will be seeing temperatures drop all the way down to the 50s compared to what we had today which is mostly 70s. a big change around the corner from the storm system moving from the north and that will splash us with showers, drop our temperatures, leave us with gusty conditions and it is bringing a chance of snow in the sierra. we will keep a close eye on that as it moves in. we'll have more in a bit. new details on a deadly

wreckage, national transportation and safety board and faa is collecting as evidence. >> i have was here yesterday skiing at north star. conditions were pretty snowy and cloudy. so i can see how this can happen because of winds. >> reporter: no word on if weather was a factor. the circumstances that caused the crash that killed the couple on board are still unknown. >> i pray for their family. >> the couple leaves behind three children. ntsb is asking anyone with surveillance video to contact investigators. a story of redemption for a north bay man in novato convicted of embezzlement . he has been pardoned. he had been released but with the pardon he is feeling a new sense of freedom. >> reporter: easter sunday in downtown novato and families

gather to celebrate and one man's holiday is particularly special. michael wood son at 82 is spending the easter with his son brian after receiving a life changing gift from the california governor gavin newsom. >> this is the actual pardon itself. this is the work product that you have to do in order to apply for a pardon with the governor. >> michael who spent five years behind bars is celebrating a new chapter in his life. on friday governor newsom granted clemency to dozens of individuals including michael with 37 pardons. >> once you are in the system, you are in the system. what happens with so many people that go to state prison is they are completely just pushed away from society. they sit over here somewhere, and that's why so many reoffend because with a

felony, i mean, you can't be licensed -- you can get a driver's license. you can't get a license to even cut hair in california. >> he was convicted by a marin county court in 1987 with 13 counts of embezzlement. he is accused of misusing $13.5 million from 400 investors. it took him more than two decades to get here. >> this was the binder i gave to the district attorney for may for marin to prove the recovery of the money. this went to sacramento also. they followed up with extensive documents and said come on, this didn't really happen, did it? i was able to prove it. so being able to prove the recovery of 12 million more than we started off with i believe is the sole reason that

baltimore workers have begun cutting wreckage of the bridge into pieces in an effort to reopen the port after the catastrophic bridge collapse. crews will scan after each cut. the coastguard is marking clear sections of the channel and say two temporary channels are second to be cleared later today to allow ships to be past the wreckage. >> i anticipate smaller vessels, maybe small tugs in the next days. >> the bodies of two construction workers have been recovered. bodies of four are unaccounted for and presumed

dead. att is notifying people who are impacted. the latest security problem for one of america's largest cell phone carriers. >> reporter: att says this impacted current and former customers and it was uncovered when private data started appearing on the dark web about two weeks ago. the leaked data comes from about 7.6 million current account holders and more than 65 million former ones. what was stolen varies from person to person. the company says it could include social security numbers, full names, first, middle, last, e-mail and mailing addresses, birthdates, att account details. most of that data is from 2019 or earlier and att said it reset current users pass codes and is reaching to those with compromised information. att is warning

customers to keep close track of their account activity and closely monitor their credit reports. so far, no word on who is behind it. >> a year ago att suffered another breach through a third party vendor that compromised millions. you might remember in february att wireless customers reported widespread outages in major cities across the u.s. the company said that was caused by a technical glitch and not a cyber attack. our first alert weather, a live look looking at the bay bridge. you see blue sunny skies. let's check in with jessica burch. it's another dry day in the bay area. today high pressure is just offshore keeping temperatures nice and above average and mostly clear skies throughout the bay area. tonight we will see coastal clouds along areas like pacifica, half moon bay. partly cloudy skies are rolling in wednesday and rainy skies are

moving in into thursday and friday. i will show you why that's happening in a second. high pressure is keeping us nice and dry and temperatures are in the 70s in the inland areas, 60s along the coast. this area of low pressure dips into the bay area in a our thursday forecast bringing cooler weather. the 70s quickly turn to 50s for example with gustier conditions and rainy skies in the bay with snow in the sierra lasting into the weekend's forecast. that system will continue to track to the east heading into the weekend. we'll dry up in the bay heading into the weekend but it's worth noting it will feel cooler into the weekend and early next week. climate prediction center showing temperatures below normal into the weekend. that's not the case today. today we are above average, talking about 60s and 70s. it's a beautiful day to get fresh air with 70s into the east bay and similar trends down to the santa clara valley.

doesn't this feel like easter sunday? we had this forecast yesterday and we are getting a nice repeat today. we are seeing sunshine today and tomorrow. remember that cold front moves in though and that happens late wednesday, early thursday. that's when temperatures dip to the low 50s. we are seeing showers thursday and friday morning and then we clear up as we head into the weekend. this is just our inland forecast. watch along the bay shorelineareas like san francisco, novato, oakland, berkeley, we hold on tight to the 60s until wednesday. we drop to the low 50s with rainy skies into thursday and then partly cloudy conditions this weekend with cooler weather around the corner. yesterday marked international transgender day, a day to recognize achievements and experiences of transgender and gender nonconforming people in san francisco. dozens showed up for a brunch at the phoenix hotel to celebrate where we asked what transgender day visibility means to the
