and the final four is now set. uconn, alabama, purdue, nc state. can they keep their cinderella story alive? good morning. i'm shanelle kaul in for anne-marie green. we begin this morning with an easter weekend storm that caused major havoc in california. part of scenic highway 1 along the central coast collapsed amid heavy rain saturday. part of the road was closed in both directions leaving people stranded near big sur. some had to sleep in their cars overnight. two people were killed when their single-engine plane crashed on saturday near lake tahoe in a snowstorm. the plane took off from denver earlier in the day. the two people killed were identified as former israeli professional soccer player and tech entrepreneur liron petrushka and his wife naomi. the ntsb is now investigating. and a horse had to be airlifted to safety after getting stuck in the mud for

almost 24 hours in a southern california river. officials there say the horse became separated from its rider and then ran off. the rider was okay. and the same storm now threatening more than 35 million people in the middle of the country. today the risk of severe storms covers parts of ten states from texas to ohio. the greatest chance will be during the afternoon and evening. the national weather service says the storms will likely create tornadoes, destructive hail, and violent winds. then tomorrow, it all moves east with a severe weather risk from mississippi to west virginia. and the rough weather could hamper the cleanup at the site of the baltimore bridge colapse. workers there began cutting down the twisted steel beams of this bridge, one of the first steps in reopening a shipping lane and economic lifeline for the people of baltimore. cbs' naomi ruchim joins us here in new york with more on this story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. new overnight, federal officials

are now working to open an alternate channel for marine traffic near the bridge. this operation and the cleanup are simply enormous undertakings, and there's still no specific details about when the port could reopen. all of this comes as president biden plans to make a visit to baltimore this week. high-powered cleanup equipment has arrived at the site of the francis scott key bridge collapse with one lofty mission -- clear the channel and fully reopen the port of baltimore. the u.s. navy is supplying four heavy-lift cranes to help remove up to 4,000 tons of debris. secretary of transportation pete buttigieg spoke of the importance of this operation on "face the nation" sunday. >> it has to be done because that is the only way to get into most of the port of baltimore. and of course it's important not just to the people and the workers of baltimore but to our supply chains.

>> reporter: it's unclear when the port will reopen to ships, but hundreds of thousands of dollars have been set aside for victims' families. that's along with $2 million in small business loans for companies put out by the collapse. of the six construction workers presumed dead, four remain missing, including father of three jose lopez. his wife isabel franco spoke through an interpreter. >> translator: i feel bad. only god knows how hard my heart aches. maybe he was desperate, trying to escape. >> reporter: the collapse and subsequent cleanup also redirected thousands of cruise line passengers this easter sunday who had to port in norfolk instead of baltimore, then board buses to their final destinations. those passengers patient and keeping perspective as crews have paused the search and recovery efforts to prioritize cleanup. that new alternate channel will only be open to government and commercial vessels directly involved in response efforts. the public is also being asked

to call a debris hotline if they come across any parts or equipment from the collapse. >> naomi ruchim in new york. thanks. and now to israel where anti-government demonstrations are growing as the war with hamas nears a six-month mark. tens of thousands of israelis took to the streets of jerusalem yesterday, the second day of mass protests, and the country's largest since the war began. demonstrators are calling on the government to reach a cease-fire deal to free the hostages, and they want prime minister benjamin netanyahu removed. before undergoing hernia surgery yesterday, netanyahu said he understood the families' pain and is doing everything he can to bring hostages home. he also rejected calls for new elections saying it would weaken the war effort. and netanyahu repeated his vow for a military ground offensive in rafah. an israeli air strike hit

this camp at a hospital in central gaza killing two palestinians in what appears to be a targeted strike. the idf says it struck an operational islamic jihad command center in the courtyard of the al aqsa hospital, and the building was not damaged. the israeli military said today it has withdrawn troops from the al shifa hospital after a two-week operation. palestinian residents who returned to the area say they found total destruction. the idf described the raid as one of the most successful of the war. easter was celebrated around the world this weekend. at the vatican pope francis overcame health concerns to deliver his traditional easter message to about 60,000 people at st. peter's square. the 87-year-old pontiff called for an immediate cease-fire in gaza and release of all israeli hostages. in england king charles

joined queen camilla in a first appearance at a royal event since being diagnosed with cancer in february. the 75-year-old monarch also shook hands and greeted well wishers. and easter mass at new york's st. patrick's day cathedral was disrupted by pro-palestinian protesters. they were handcuffed and removed by police. in his easter message, president biden renewed his commitment to work for peace as wars take a toll on innocent lives around the world. the president chastised his political opponent's recent social media post. skyler henry has details from the white house. >> reporter: the biden campaign says that the former president, quote, regular low incites political violence, this comes as the former president shared an image of president biden bound and restrained in the back of a pickup truck. the latest series of posts from trump targeting opponents both

politically and in the courtroom as he also blasted the new york judge presiding over his hush-money trial and his daughter. that trial is set to begin in a couple of weeks. on the legal front, trump has until thursday to put town a $175 million bond or cash with the court to comply with his new york civil fraud judgment. on the campaign trail, president biden is expected to spend the week here in washington. the former president will be on the road making stops in michigan and wisconsin ahead of another round of primaries on tuesday. he'll then spend the latter half of the week in florida trying to raise more than $33 million. some of that money will go to his campaign. other parts of that fundraising will go to the pac that pays a majority of his legal bills. still ahead this hour, the search for rashee rice. the chiefs' wide receiver is connected to a major car crash. and cutting it close. an oregon man narrowly escapes a runaway blade.

welcome back. a close call in oregon. take a look. surveillance video from thursday shows a man walking into a eugene convenience store seconds before a huge metal blade crashed into the building just inches away from the door. the blade came loose from a concrete saw at a nearby construction site. there was a church fire on easter, and a chiefs player is being sought by police. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "dallas morning news" reports police are looking for kansas city chiefs wide receiver rashee rice in connection with a major incident. dash cam video shows what authorities say is a corvette believed to be registered or leased to rice and a lamborghini speeding and crashing on a dallas highway on saturday. it caused a chain-reaction collision involving four others vehicles.

four people were hurt, and photos obtained by tmz sports appears to show the occupants of the alleged speeding cars walking away from the scene. police suspect rice was driving the corvette. no comment, though, from the chiefs. the "new york post" says five people including three firefighters were hurt in a church fire during easter service. officials say around 170 people were at the brooklyn church yesterday when flames broke out. they say one firefighter fell through the second floor onto the first floor, bounced back up, and then continued battling the fire. the priest said fire officials told him the cause was electrical. and "the indianapolis star" says seven young people were shot and wounded outside a downtown indianapolis shopping mall. police say the victims ranging in age from 12 to 17 were shot on saturday night. they're all in stable condition, and investigators say they believe more than one gun was used in the shooting. no arrests have been made.

at&t is investigating a major data leak that's impacting more than 70 million current and former customers. at&t says the breach appears to be from 2019 or earlier. addresses, social security numbers, and other personal information were leaked on the dark web. the company says it has already reset the pass codes of current users, and it's urging customers to monitor account activity and credit reports. more than half a million california fast food workers are getting a big pay raise today. $20 an hour. the highest in the country. the new state minimum wage focuses on some of the country's biggest chains with more than 60 locations. companies like starbucks, chipotle, and mcdonald's have already warned they plan to pass the cost onto customers by raising menu prices. and this is no april fool's joke. there are now nearly one billion reasons to get in on the powerball fever. the jackpot for tonight's

the number-one seeds purdue next week. the boilermakers defeated tennessee 72-66. this, by the way, is purdue's first trip to the final four since 1980. and defending national champion and the tournament's overall number-one seed the final four. the huskies crushed illinois saturday 77-52. it was the march madness record ten straight double-digit victory for connecticut. they'll face alabama which knocked off clemson 89-82. it's alabama's first-ever trip to the final four. and things didn't quite measure up at one of the sites for the ncaa women's basketball tournament. before the start of yesterday's texas-north carolina state game in portland, oregon, officials there noticed the distance of the three-point lines at each end of the court were different. one was too short, the other was correct. the teams decided to play despite the discrepancy rather than delay the game. a minnesota minor league
